Kidnapping and all forms of crime are bad but the government should look into provision of basic infrastructures.

Even though i disagree with some of the policies of Dr Ngozi, there is no way i will support kidnapping or any form of violence to be indirectly or directly brought upon her and her family. My prayers are with them in this their time of need.

Hope the awardees after graduation can come back and develop the state, its not by dashing them money they should have employed all of them in the state university first then bond them and then encourage them to study up to Phd levels and then return back to lecture and work wonders in the state university which Uduaghan should try and develop infrastructurally to world standard.

Emary: When i was serving at a General Hospital in the North (I can't give names for confidentiality), there was a pregnant woman who had tried to delivered at home and was rushed to the hospital because the delivery was proving difficult. It turned out that the child's arm had prolapsed or was sticking out of the vagina in an awkward position. We tried to reposition unsuccessfully but couldn't so the only option left was an emergency CS. In Sept. 2004, this woman needed just N30,000 for the surgery and couldn't afford it. Her husband was a carpenter and that was her 9th delivery. I begged and begged the head of the hospital to perform the CS on credit but he refused. Unfortunately this was a period I was soo broke myself so I couldn't pay cash and I was refused to sign as a surety for them. After three(3) days of excruciating pain the poor woman developed an infection. Obviously the child had died in utero and become septic so she developed high-grade fever and eventually died. It was about an hour before her death that the callous doctor heading the hospital approved the surgery, only too late. His claim was that I didn't know "these people". "They had the money but wouldn't pay". This was my first week there but I couldn't sleep properly for the next one week after she died. Her husband's grief was of the type I have never seen in a man before that time or since. HE wept profusely saying, " My help, my partner, how will I raise 8 children on my own?". It was so pathetic. I currently work to promote family planning because I believe that no-one should have children if they are not adequately prepared. I mean a couple expecting a child didn't have a mere N20000 saved? How were they planning on feeding the child?

The issues of negligence on the part of the medical staff must also be addressed. If you're going to admit, then please treat and at least stabilize the patient. If you won't, refer. Simple!
Carpenter, 8 children, in this time and age.

dtc2k: We are always quick to open our BIG mouth and condem the system. Are we all NOT part of the system that is wrong and becomeing wrong everyday. This is a case that the AIT, SILVEBIRD, CHANNELS, RAYPOWER and other media houses should take Up and expose the rot in our hospitals and the entire system. But they will rather be telling us how 1 ministers son married another governos daughter. Very SAD indeed. The hopitals should be locked and the key trwon into the ocean. Yet the doctors will go on strick if Government refuse to pay their wages.
after exposing the so called rot what next? Its one thing for the government to declare lets say free medicare for the pregnant and the elderly, its another thing for them to release the money to the hospitals that will take care of these people.

I know bruv. We have lost it in this country. Since Army officers now kidnap. Police kill people for N20. My sister's best friend lost her mom because the doctor said he forgot to stitch her after a Caesarean section. The country is in a crazy state.
please let us not try to paint Nigerian doctors as bad they are really trying under the harsh work environment they find themselves.

thegoodjoehunt: Very sad tale.

Well I went through the same thing May 31st this year. I lost my Identical twin brother because the doctor refused treating him in the Early hours of the morning, around 4.am.

He said we must deposit N50,000. I was with N20,000 at the hospital, it was an emergency and I begged for them to hold the N20,000. When the bank opens, I will get the balance but they refused.

By the time day break, I watched my twin brother and best friend pass out in my arms and lost his life. It is sad because I have to live that day everyday for the rest of my life. When my brother died a close friend of ours said. If this doctor knew the kind of person he let die, he will never live with himself. My brother was a good man and was actively into charity. He vowed to spend the rest of his life helping the poor and the needy.

Please I pray God gives your family the strength to bear the loss. A lot of the doctors in the country are evil.
cry
my condolences and sympathy, every Nigerian though should have a hospital/clinic that he is registered with and is nearby so in cases of emergency they can treat without asking for money knowing the credit worthiness of the patient involved.

coogar: shut up your mouth, you insensitive obnoxious swine.....
is it too much if the doctor pays from his own pocket? it was an emergency for bleeps' sake - an emergency that concerns life and death of 2 vulnerable people! how do these heartless nigerians sleep at night? the bastards took 5000 from the husband and then allowed the wife and child to die and you dare ask me to do charity? you are a consummate rëtard.....

and it is because of that single important factor the woman should have received medical care.
pay from his pocket that he is father christmas shey?

A life cannot be saved when they are no resources, any man who decides to marry and pregnant a woman should make provision for her treatment in case of emergency.
Thank God I'm not a doctor sha. So you think you will come to my hospital, I will treat you, you sleep in my ward and you will not pay. Let me tell you a short story. My pops is a doctor and he once did free emergency c-section operation for one woman like that to save her and the baby and the woman ended up being admitted for over 2 weeks the baby was placed in an incubator for a long time in uch. All bills and transport cost were on my pops hospital. The woman and her husband didn't pay a dime. They came with an hard luck story and a promise to pay as soon as possible only to host afterwards a very flamboyant naming ceremony without settling hospital bills. People, which account will you write dat one in. The reason I got to know was that my mum was so crossed because I am my siblings were owing school fees and were abt to be chased out from school and my pops was rendering free services to save mankind.
hope your dad learnt his lesson, nice narrative.

coogar: you are ptyalising nonsense, my friend!

a pregnant woman in need of medical help should be saved - these useless doctors took 5000 naira from her husband and claimed it was only for registration. now that the woman is dead, of what essence is the registration? why should they charge for registration? honestly, your moral compass is so screwed up, i doubt you can find your way to your bedroom. why couldn't they just treat this woman - if the husband refuses to pay then detain the husband!! put him in a police station till someone can come to their rescue and pay up. is that not a better approach than letting the woman and child die?
once police see that you do not have money they will not even admit you into their detention cell because you will be taking up the space of others who can pay bribe and come out.

Its becoming clearer now that quite a number of nairalanders either do not live in Nigeria or they have lost touch with the situation on ground. The only place where you may get treatment first with little or no deposit in Port Harcourt is Teme and it is run by a foreign charity which it appears have issues with the state government so they are closing shop this year i hear.

No other hospital private or government will treat you based on 5000 in today Nigeria what can that do? The husband sef get mind to keep pregnant woman for house with only 5000 and no ATM.

Lets call a spade a spade, the only free thing a Nigerian citizen enjoys is the air he breathes, all other things are paid by him directly and indirectly.
