From the gate the first people you meet are the policemen who would look for an excuse to extort money from you, then after about 4 minutes drive you will encounter a hold up on the access road caused by a combined team of civil defense corps, police all wearing this green hazard vest preventing you from seeing their name tags and some faceless civilians and what are they doing? checking all outbound passenger luggage outside on the road. Why then should the customs check it again in the airport if i may ask? is this not a duplication of activities? will these imbeciles not ask for minimum wage increase for no work done? is this what the police and civil defense corps are trained to do? what exactly are they looking for? After we packed and my director came down to open her box for them the police woman just mumbled something that we should go. Thank God we came very early as international check in for a 6pm flight started by 4pm and this was 10 minutes after 4pm.

Now we are in the car pack and on getting down the customs send us to the check in counter of Lufthansa at the international arrival hall where we check in the luggage and then go with the hand luggage to the international departure where hopefully there is a chair to sit down. All the way the customs, cargo handling people, airport staff where all asking us to find them something. This is their stock in trade - forceful begging, one man did help my director fill a form (she actually filled the form herself ) then requested for money and she gave him N100 and it was then all hell wanted to break loose but she then requested back for her money - is she working for them? The guy had to stomach his pride and keep it - this is so uncool. If you see many a Nigerian at the airport trying to be nice or even at the bank or any public place, he will expect a generous tip afterward and its N500 they are thinking of.
