Blackteeth: oops. my trick didn't work huh ok. i'll tell you the truth. It's like this: Anglo-Saxons > Jews> Asians> Arabs> Latin Americans> Native Americans > Mixed blacks > blacks. yup. you are genetically cursed. nothing we can do about it. now go to bed. |

It's still good to read news from journals. I read these once in a while: http://234next.com/ allafrica.com http://www.nigerianinquirer.com/ it'll be nice for people to post recommendations on which online papers are good. etc. i would like to know |

fyneguy: converting raw material into finished products is just the second step. becoming rich enough to be able to send the manufacturing process offshore is now the ideal. countries creating finished products are 2nd tier slaves nowadays lol |
Politics / Re: The Black African Gene by oyinda3(f): 8:29am On Dec 09, 2010 |
@OP, I ask myself the same question sometimes but then I look through history and find that the successful countries became successful through lots of dirt and blood in their hands. It's like a zero sum game nowadays and it's difficult for power to change hands but it's possible. You need to change your topic title though. That's ridiculous for you to think it has to do with genes . It's more social, economic, political etc than anything else. genes have nothing to do with it. ROSSIKE: You have to consider the fact that 60,000+ years ago, the geography of the world was probably a bit different. ie continents were probably closer to each other etc. Otherwise, I generally agree with you. |
Politics / Re: Wikileaks Cables: Shell's Grip On Nigerian State Revealed by oyinda3(f): 8:08am On Dec 09, 2010 |
edoyad: that's the nice thing about leaks like this. Sometimes, you need evidence to take action even though your gut tells you something is going on, without evidence, a lot of times you can't take action esp. if the force you are fighting against is way bigger than you. (imagine a multinational company making profits that's 10x the national income/economy) So I hope the Naija govt. (at least the less corrupt members if such exist) take advantage of this opportunity and make some changes. |

Kilode?!: It will be nice if more Nigerians knew about stuff like this and were more politically active rather than passive citizens. some here are even praising the British and wishing we were still under colonization (which we still are actually. it's called neo-colonization). |

for those of you calling for nationalization, remember what happened to Mossadeq in Iran when he tried to nationalize iranian oil in 1953s. he was assasinated by US CIA and replaced by a puppet. US is hell bent on ruling the world and controlling all world resources. strangerf: They didn't build any infrastructure for us. they built it for themselves. The infrastructure was created to allow for easy transportation of raw materials and minerals out of Africa to Europe. Notice all the infrastructure in Africa are concentrated around ports. That's colonialism for you. All the infrastructure were for exploitation. They exploited our resources to dearth and built railroads and roads to facilitate this process. |

https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-83064.0.html read this thread. Apparently there was a snowfall in 1978 and Jos has a hailstorm (where it rains ice pebbles) every year during the cold season. and your population and ethnicity statistics is correct. http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2836.htm just print out the link and show it to them. Don't let anybody put you down or try to tell you that they know more about your country than you do. |
Culture / Re: Yoruba Women And High Priority Of Having Children In Their Matrimonial Home. by oyinda3(f): 6:12am On Dec 08, 2010 |
I think Nigerians adopt children more than we like to think but they are usually extended family or close friends' children, but it is adoption nonetheless. but I agree with you that we don't typically use the institutional orphanages to adopt kids and many who do adopt expect to have their own biological children. Yoruba people value children for many reasons but one important reason is because in Nigeria, children are a form of social security. Who will take care of you when you are old? |

Ileke-IdI: people in general (either male or female) resist taxation. especially when they are not seeing their taxes being put to good use. The women were probably organized better than the men which is why they were able to hold a protest. They had a union. Also, they probably felt the effect of the tax more strongly (they had to cater to themselves and their kids, they weren't making that much in the first place etc) I don't know. there could be other reasons too. The book does seem like one I would love to read. In fact, it's in my school library. I picked it out (the front cover is awesome!! i'm not sure if you've seen it yet) but I put it back on the shelves and promised myself to look at it again maybe when I have a break or vacation. lol |
Nairaland / General / Appreciate Somebody by oyinda3(f): 5:46am On Dec 08, 2010 |
There have been a death on Nairaland. A real death and not a Papermoon one and it just made me realize how this forum really is more personal than we would like to think. It's crazy and scary how emotional everyone is and it's just really hard to block it off or put up a wall to insulate yourself. Recently I've been looking at members profiles and just reminiscing but at the same time, trying to grasp what exactly death is. Is it like saying goodbye to someone you know you may never see again even though they are still alive? Does the fact that we know someone is alive keep us from mourning their loss even though we know that we may never see them again? Will the childhood friends that our departed one lost touch with many many years ago ever be able to mourn him? It made me think of some of my childhood friends that I may never see again or even recognize if I see them. Is there anyone dead among them? What is the meaning of death? What is the meaning of a loss? Can you have one without the other? Without minding all these philosophical questions, I think death makes us appreciate those that are with us and around us more and i've been noticing that attitude on NL. This thread is just to help keep that spirit. It is a means for people to appreciate and recognize each other. Maybe apologize to those you argue with constantly or just acknowledge them and appreciate them. It is also a thread for people to note previously active Nairaland members that they miss. This thread is for us to accept the fact that Nairaland is indeed a family, although it is the weirdest one I've seen. 1 Like |

sashaa: you can be dark skin and be cool. See the lady's pics posted above yours? She's very dark skinned but cool colors (silver grey) look better on her than warm colors (brown. although the shiny fabric of the brown shirt looks nice on cool skin! think icy (cool) shiny). if you are cool but you wear warm colors all the time, people will usually give you comments like "you look tired" etc Even foundations use warm/cool color scheme. If you buy foundation at MAC, it will either be a NW or a NC. w= warm, c= cool. This makes all the difference in how you look!! |

^ no problem. always use cold water for rinsing your face instead of warm water. it will close your pores and is beneficial for the long run. also, use sunscreen. I know this is common knowledge but it's important. Cut back on sugars!!!! It causes aging!!! |

i don't believe this!!! I remember there was a topic here a few months back about the guy who designed the national flag and his current destitute condition. he was complaining that the govt totally forgot and ignored him. this move is hypocrisy at the highest level if it's true. gov't can't help or compensate the now destitute guy who created the national flag. but it wants to torture and abuse people who don't buy into the whole nationalistic/patriotic scam? |
