you're trying to be too clever. Read her post well - it in no where specifies the job in question was "temporary" or "permanent". The way its worded it gives the impression the pay was for a stable job which very unlikely. Stable professional jobs pay a set salary NOT per day or per hour!

The rank idiocy on display on some of these threads is a huge turn off sometimes.

she didn't say it explicitly but it is implied. I didn't get the impression AT ALL that it was a permanent job. infact, she said "jobs" which is plural and meant that she went from one to another.
to add to that, her next sentence was "how many of them talking here ever got paid £50 per day?"
if she meant it as a permanent job, she would have said "how many of them talking here are getting paid £50 per day?"

you have to read her post more clearly for the right interpretation. not everything will be laid out explicitly. this website is not for elementary school students.
for example, the last sentence of your post doesn't explicitly call ishit4body an idi.ot, but it implies it.

my thoughts exactly. The way she portrays it you'd think she legitimately earned this in a stable, permanent employment.

why do you think she didn't earn it legitimately?
and i don't think she portrayed it as a "stable, permanent employment"
if you read her post again more clearly, she said she has "done jobs where i got paid £500 per day"
i don't get the idea of one fixed permanent employment from what she said. the whole idea is she was using it to make a point.
TV/Movies / Re: Movie: For Colored Girls by oyinda3(f): 7:23am On Nov 15, 2010
you guys are both right.

yea it shouldn't matter who directed the movie as long as it turns out "good."
but to me, more black women will connect with the movie when it is directed by a black woman. just that in this case, how many black female directors are there?
But i'm sure tyler perry enlisted the help of black women to direct his movie. And even the author of the poems herself had a say on the direction of the movie. she made it clear to perry that she didn't want the stereotypical "Madea" in her movie. madea is an obnoxious black man dressed up as a black woman and playing a black woman's role. this is characteristic of tyler perry's movies that concern black women and the author of "for colored girls" made it clear to him that she doesn't want that.

the reason perry is directing this movie is most likely because he has the resources.
to me it was more of choice between having a half baked bread or nothing at all.

what we need to do is cultivate black female movie directors.

Without the Nigerians abroad, Nigerian economy would be $10b poorer.

Because according to reports those people abroad send to Nigeria between $10bn-$17bn Yearly.

If the OP wants serious answers, The country surely misses them. Most of people who made first class in Universities travel abroad for MSc and PhD. How can you tell us Nigeria wont miss their most brilliant minds that travel abroad?

We have seen several Nigerians leaders going abroad to encourage these set of people to come home.

Even entice them to come home and help develop the country, Many top companies go abroad to recruit graduates from foreign schools

you are contradicting yourself.
Why would you miss someone and want them to come back home when you know that you benefit more from them when they are away?

your family in Naija wants you to stay abroad so you can keep sending money back home. they are not begging for your return because once you return, obviously you won't be "sending" as much money to them.

so are nigerians at home really missing nigerians abroad and wishing they come back or never left in the first instance? I think the answer is NO.
what they might be wishing instead is that they get a chance to go as well or join you abroad. but I don't think they are wishing for you to come back.

and about nigerian leaders begging you to come home, I really don't see that.  I see is them begging white and chinese foreigners to come to Nigeria rather. which is unfortunate.
I think some nigerians abroad sometimes have an illusion of grandeur about themselves.

Here's my ranking of fulfillment, happiness, joy and satisfaction for Nigerians home and abroad:
1. Successful Nigerians living at home (in Nigeria) come first - quite a number. May get richer as time goes by.

2. Successful Nigerians living abroad come second - very few of them. Prone to economic crises and hate policies.

3. Struggling Nigerians living at home come third - their condition can change overnight.

4. Struggling Nigerians living abroad come last - they are many in population and their condition gets worse from time to time.

I agree with you!!

mikeujoel:

Hi Guys, I just had to register on this site to contribute on this topic.

Does Nigeria really miss me for being away so long! That's a tough one to answer. Let me start by talking a little about myself. I had my 1st degree in Nigeria and my MSC from the UK. I left Nigeria in 2001 just after graduation and have worked in the UK, Malaysia, Singapore and presently the Middle East. I have gained a lot of experience and qualifications which will be put to good use back home.

To rephrase your question: Does Nigeria really need Nigerians in diaspora? The answer is yes, on condition. Nigeria needs intellectuals with a love for their country and willingness to return back home and build the country. I miss home and I am happy to say I am on my way back home finally.

Living overseas has been an eye opener and I never regretted moving, but truth be told there is no place like home. Every year I go back to that crazy Lagos and whenever I am in the airport on my way out of Nigeria,a part of me dies.

Nigeria is in a state of disrepair, no doubt, but it is home. So yes it works both ways. Nigeria needs us and we need Nigeria. Wink

I will be moving back with my family in January 2011 back to Nigeria finally as I got an offer back home. I do understand that some Nigerians overseas will come back if they get good jobs, but if there is none then what will they come back to?

Great thread though.

great!!!

at OP, i agree with you (even though i'm living abroad). I was very disappointed by the posts on that topic 'cause they were very condescending IMO and I would feel offended if i were a nigerian resident which i'm assuming you are.
It pissed me off more because the people making the comments were nigerians. we say we love our country and yea it's true things are not in great condition but sometimes, the way we say things (tone and gesture) reveal more or adds more to what is actually said.

nigerians abroad have their share of problems no doubt. rotflmao  grin

to me, I think some nigerians are better off abroad in terms of quality of life (ex. if they lived in poverty in naija etc. of course things will not be rosy abroad but to them, it's much better compared to being in naija and I can understand where they are coming from). while for others, I think it would be better off for them to have stayed in nigeria just because of their level of education and profession. I feel they would contribute more to the country.

Mz Frugal,
I like your sense of humor in all of these and wish u d best. I don't have too much advice except to cut cost as much as possible.
-try thrift stores for your clothing. it can be fun and the quality of your finds will surprise you if you are good at thrift shopping!!
- don't buy clothing unnecessarily. I assume that your kids are growing that's why you need to buy clothing. but otherwise, I would advice you to put clothing and accessories to the back back back of your list. lol
- for food, save up and buy in bulk. but ration when you eat so that it lasts you.
- try to look for opportunities for free meals. If you guys have farmers' markets in your area, go there to buy food. you can bargain with the store owner. or go to an ethnic store. I'm glad that you are taking care not to compromise your health with junk food.
- The time that you are spending out of work, use it to do some service work. it's a way to network.
- I'm sure you already know that you should be actively looking in other places for employment. also tell you friends and colleagues about your situation. tell them to keep an ear out for you if they find something for you.
- remain optimistic and cheerful. this is a temporary situation i.e this too shall pass. don't get depressed over it.
Travel / Re: Do You Regret Moving Abroad? by oyinda3(f): 8:14am On Nov 14, 2010
^ yea elderly people tend to be more mixed about it. they are more likely to say that they regret moving abroad (at least partially).
it think it also depends on the age of the emigree. If you came to the US/UK early in life you might have less regrets than someone who came at a later age.

so the factors that affect it, in my opinion, are:
1)the age of person at time of immigration. the older you were the less opportunities you may feel are available to you abroad.
2) length of time abroad. the longer u've been abroad, the more disenchanted you may become and start thinking of coming back home.
3) position in Naija. If you were rich in naija, it may be better to stay home. That's why politicians and big business men only go abroad for summers   and vacations even though many have the option of staying abroad permanently.
4) success abroad. obviously if you have achieved your dream abroad, then you probably want to remain there.
Travel / Re: Do You Regret Moving Abroad? by oyinda3(f): 7:55am On Nov 14, 2010
I don't understand the point of this topic. Most people have the freedom to return to naija if they want. Or to return to the US if they are visiting naija.Regret applies more to permanent change. something you cannot change that happened in the past (but may still be affecting your life). Most people responding to this topic are still young and dynamic. They still have lots of choices and options. No permanent change has occured yet and still have the idea of the "american dream" etc

It is best to pose this question to elderly nigerians who have lived decades abroad and are about to retire home etc. They are the ones who can explain better if their extended time abroad has been well worth it.
because if you are still living abroad and have no plans of coming home to settle anytime soon, obviously you don't have regrets!! how can you regret something you are still doing!!?
so the question should be posed to people who are coming back home. Or people who "life abroad" is a past experience for them. They are the ones, in my opinion, who have more authority in this subject matter.

hahah this might be a problem for some who prefer to die abroad though. maybe they should be asked on their dying bed hahahah

i don't get the bolded part.
many nigerian men have this paternalistic mentality toward their wives and it baffles me. this idea that the wife should and must be financially dependent on the husband.
this is the reason why most are looking for young girls who are in their most naive and financially gullible state.
then they complain that nigerian girls are materialistic. you guys feed into the idea that your role is to provide everything for her even though you know what idea is very unrealistic.

obama must have married at 36 if he is now 48 yrs old with a 12yr old daughter.
36 is not a bad age to marry if you have attained the level of education and accomplishment that man has. in fact, many men are marrying in their mid 30s nowadays.

what is the purpose of having 10 kids by age 25 when you don't have the good job to cater for their well being?
most educated people tend to eat better and live healthier lives anyway. and tend not to be too obsessed with having a male child  shocked

Samobi:

I honestly believe that the reason naija men give themselves headache over this is because deep down inside, they know they have more to benefit from marraige than the ladies. A woman who lives in the west and holds an excellent paying job does not have much to gain from marraige because the stigma is not there. It is only in that negative, backward, hell hole called Naija where the people cannot even enjoy 24 hours of consistent electricity that marraige is an issue.

thank you!!! this is sooo true.
especially if the wife is young and financially dependent then she can be bossed about even more easily.

NubianQ, i like you jare. I personally don't plan on getting married till around 27yrs.  most girls who marry in their early 20s most likely do so to get financial stability in a husband. Personally, if I find a rich man to take care of my needs grin  i won't even mind getting married tomorrow.
guys complain about girls being after their money but they still prefer to go after the same young financially insecure and dependent girls.

they are bitter because no 20-23 yr old girls are willing to marry their broke behind .but they are not willing to settle for the 27 yr old who doesn't need the money and is willing to be a true partner.   i can't see any other reason why a guy will be looking for a girl that's 10-15yrs younger than him unless he's looking for solely a cook and bedmate who is dependent on him as opposed to a partner. girls of nowadays aren't that silly. many will rather stay single

yoruba women are more curvy while igbos have a relatively more athletic physique. and hausas are slim and lanky. I may be wrong but that's my guess.

hi guys,
I must say i've thoroughly enjoyed this thread so much that i quickly registered with the forum.I think a lot of the comments are well informed and intelligent. However i do have my reservation when some people take it to a personal level. It does leave a sour taste and quite frankly classless if not immature. embarassed

In my opinion,Capitalism that is regulated with a strong government presence is ideal. My arguement for this is that while the ideals of capitalism encourages innovation, competition and hard work,it also fuels greed even in the best of men.Interestingly no country practices capitalism in it purest form, for it becomes counter productive.I believe the premise for this post would be the american form of capitalism which seems to have the government get weaker and private enterprise get stronger over time.I read a comment where someone brought up the point of microsoft being stifled at a point or standard oil being broken into parts.I think that is the very role goverment needs to play, yes allow for innovation and growth, but when a company is perceieved to be too "big" or too controlling of an industry too allow competition, then government has to limit it.No system is perfecft in itself it needs tweaking and adjusting along the way.Capitalism definitely gives that poor village boy with a zeal and creative mind the oppurtunity to be "somebody".What about the boy with not so much ability, well there is welfare

truth be told, this is earth and until we get get to heaven, we can not live equally with our different abilities.
BTW,THE U.S CATERS FOR POOR PEOPLE WITH HOMELESS SHELTERS AND FOOD STAMPS,IT JUST SEEMS TO BE SHRINKING IN ITS ABILITY TO REGULATE CAPITALISM.gREED THE 'DEVIL IN CAPITALISM cheesy cheesy

ha perfect.
a state that practices capitalism but also has a strong government is ideal in my opinion.
a balance between what you would call capitalism and socialism.
and i like your concrete example of the village boy. the smart one can have the opportunity to develop his talent while the not so fortunate one can go on welfare.
and yeah. the premise of this topic is about the weakening position of the govt and the inability to regulate capitalism nowadays. and just people's general adverse reaction to the suggestion of a stronger government. you get labeled as socialist for suggesting a need for a stronger govt. don't people realize that the kind of capitalism that we have nowadays is getting too extreme. to me at least.

welcome to NL by the way.
Romance / Re: Why Do Girls Wake Up At 27 Years by oyinda3(f): 7:21am On Nov 07, 2010
that's because age of marriage is increasing around the world. women are now getting married in their late 20s and men in their early to mid 30s.
a woman who is ready to get married probably should look for a serious/employed/family oriented guy who is past his "serious fun" stage. rather than looking for a younger guy or an agemate who is still looking for fun.

if she is desperate and having a problem, then she should find contacts from the USA or UK. many naija men abroad are looking for wife. lol

ok that is serious if that news source is true. but i do not think that those people are any less stupid than the rest of us. trust me, most of the food we eat are just as disgusting. we just don't know the process because we buy it from the seller rather than from the butcherer.
