i dont see anytin bad in cuttin d whale or even eatin it once is still very fresh and not smelling some people here for nairaland go jus dey form as if dem no be nigeria

thank you. Most human beings (whether barbarian or civilized) know not to eat rotten meat purposely. we are psychologically wired to be turned off by decaying stink etc no matter how poor we are.
the meat must have been freshly dead.
and besides, such things have happened before and the people who ate the meat aren't dead yet!!! even if it carried health risk, my guess is that the risk will be from excessive consumption.

And if you weren't an ugly Bimbo and I dont mean the Yoruba name, searching for a husband on Nairaland, because no one here can see just how wrinkly your face is, you would learn to speak with decency and also that Organic doesn't mean dead even if its Unprocessed. You want organic food then go set a trap in the bush or something. Damn whats the educational standard in Nigeria coming to this days?

my point = dead whale meat is 100x better than all the processed junk most americans consume. but if we consider phreakabit's mentality, eating 20lbs of twinkies and processed gunk is the height of civilization.

well, you didn't have to tell me that attractive people speak and act decently. i already knew that.
by the way, will you marry me?

obviously you didn't understand my question. why are the whales turning up dead on the shore?
if lizards were turning up dead on your doorstep. would you be more concerned about why they are turning up dead on your doorstep or why ants are eating them?

so winning the midterm elections would make him more powerful than the chinese president?
haha what a joke

and i don't know what they mean by "bending the world to their will" obama never bent anybody to his will. people were just crazy obsessed with him on their own will for some reason. i never understood the obsession. the guy got a nobel prize for doing what? and now, the obsession/lust is fading away naturally as it should.

hahaha I love your post.

even the educated white people are starting to eat "organic"
organic = 100% natural.  cool how "civilized" is that?

phreakabit:

Dude that was either Fear Factor or Real Man or Chicken? and those are Reality TV shows, meaning those guys get paid to do that, theres nothing wrong in eating Whales, The Japanese almost rendered them extinct. What i find wrong is the fact that this is the second or third time this droppings is repeating itself here. I bet you if this happened in Ghana Angola or SA (at least for Black Africans those are our main competitors) the story would be different, SMH @ this really.

if you are a sensible person, the question you should be asking is "why are the whales turning up in the shore?" rather than "why are people eating the whales"
the most important question is what is causing the whales to die and how to address that ecological/environmental problem. infact, it surprised me that most of us were more focused on labeling the nigerians consuming the whale as poverty striken or uncivilized rather than addressing the cause of the death of the whale which should be the more important question.

I smell a lot of hypocrisy here, The same people who condemn capitalism and extol socialism/communism's vitues would never want to live in a communist state. How many people do we hear of fleeing the "exploitation" of capitalist countries and escaping to socialist paradise? Yet we constantly hear of people braving shark-infested waters to escape from socialist utopia (cuba, North Korea, Laos etc) and to be "exploited" in capitalist countries (UK, US).

Any one that truly wants to understand capitalism should read Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations. He sums up the book in the following comment, "it is not from the benevolence of the butcher or the baker that we expect our dinner but from his pursuit of his own self interest" Society's interest is best served when everyone pursues his/her own self interest. This is what makes capitalism succeed and others fail. They fail because they do not consider that man is naturally selfish.

Any ideology that forces all men to live equally is bondage. Any system that does not reward private initiative and enterprise is oppressive. Has anyone bothered to understand why things work best in Nigeria or elsewhere when they are privately run and every thing that is run by the state is poorly run? I challenge anyone to contradict me.

If you dislike capitalism and private enterprise, put your money where your mouth is, refuse to patronize goods and services made available through private initiative and enterprise and look to the state to supply all your needs. Do it for a year and come back to tell us what you learnt!

I don't think that "things work best" when they are privately run. You have to look at the system holistically rather than individually.
ex. you may say that a private school is of better quality than a public school. but if you look at the big picture, can you imagine a country where only private schools exist? meaning only 1% of the population is educated. is that "the best" situation for such a country?

how do we find a balance between "looking out for ones own best interest" and making sure others are not being unfairly kicked to the curb?
why do you think there are rules in most societies against monopolies? does a monopoly mean that the smaller business owner isn't working hard enough?

I'm not saying a state should provide all the needs because obviously that won't work. but you can't look to the other extreme either. absolute capitalism is just as dangerous as socialism. The only reason why capitalism looks better than socialism is because it is extreme socialism that is always being compared to capitalism. if you wanted a more fairer comparison, you would look at a socialist state and a purely capitalist state (a state without a regulating government where all power is in the "invisible hands" of the market) in such a state of pure capitalism, we would almost be paying for the water and the air that we breathe and the roads we drive our cars on. big corporations will be allowed to pollute the air and waters unlimitedly without regulation. education, health care (this is a big problem in the US and thank God obama has just signed the public health care bill), public roads will be limited to an elite class that will get smaller and smaller etc. it will be just as bad as communism or worse  shocked!!!!!
in fact, agric corporations now have rights to some plants and animals (through the idea of "intellectual property" for GMOs) meaning that they own some forms of life!!! think about the future if and when medical corporations can claim human life as intellectual property? such can exist in a purely capitalistic society because MONEY and GREED is the most important factor not values.
i can't even start to talk about the medical system in the US where basically poor people are shut out of it. what's the point of having a good quality medical system if 60% of the population doesn't have access to it!!!
yea there is more creativity and innovation with capitalism but to what extent does it start to become detrimental to society? what is the limit?

to me, there should be a balance. but unfortunately, it seems that the current standard is one that is leaning more and more to the extreme end of capitalism. until this recent financial crisis of course that have caused the government to step in very hard. and made people start to re-think the idea of capitalism as the most perfect system.

I really honestly do not see anything wrong in what these people are doing.

edoyad:

Which poverty ? While i'm not denying the state of poverty in our land, i doubt that's the only reason that whale was dismembered so quickly. Afterall Japan is the second wealthiest nation on this globe and i'm sure same would have happened there.

thank you.
the main issue is definitely not poverty. the same would happen in the US if people were more in tune with the source of their foods. most americans are scared of touching a chicken and cannot tell a cock from a hen because they are not exposed to animals as source of food. (the only animals they know are pets like cats and dogs) even though americans consume more meat than any other country. the US food regulations have made it so. food processing is limited to a few corporations and we are left in the dark about the disgusting facts of where our meat come from before it arrives at the supermarket or fast food restaurant in freshly packaged shape.

in fact, this beached whale is probably 10x healthier and fresher than what you get in american macdonalds!!!
and it's FREE.  i would go for it as well.
Politics / Re: What Is Your Opinion On Capitalism? by oyinda3(f): 4:13am On Nov 03, 2010
to me, the market crash in 2008 and the whole fact that big businesses needed financial bailout from the government made a lot of people question the invincibility and strength of american capitalism. The system seem very opportunistic to me. When things are going great, they claim there is no need for regulation that the invincible hand of the market will regulate itself. but when smokes and flames start showing up, they run to the govt for assistance. and the whole fact that the US subsidizes some of its industries while it scolds other countries for doing d same.

as many posters pointed out, the US system is not pure capitalism. but it seems that rather than govt regulating it, industries are using the govt as puppet for their schemes. lobbyists (aka legalized corruption), financial bailout etc

I guess what I think will be ideal is if corporate/ industry power and influence is curtailed to an extent.
Politics / Re: What Is Your Opinion On Capitalism? by oyinda3(f): 7:28am On Nov 02, 2010
Besides, what ever gave you the impression that the US wants all nations to adopt a free market system? The US wants all nations to adopt democracy and not a free market system. With a free market system in all countries, how do the rich nations get their raw materials, labour, and land at well below market price? Western corporations did not move to China and India to develop free market systems but to take advantage of lax labour laws, cheap labour, and cheap land.

hmmm I always got the impression that the US is trying to move the world to a free market system
the idea is that in a free market system, the country with the upper hand will always gain more (competitive advantage). This is the reason why US is very confident. Capitalism is good for the rich mostly. it improves the poor only marginally while it improves the rich exponentially making the rich-poor gap very wide. the US has extreme surplus of food going to waste while other countries are barely scraping by.
capitalists argue that everyone is better off but what's the point if a poor man is "better off" by one point while the rich man becomes better off by 1000 points? like Ezeuche said, it's a "dog eat dog world" and what i dislike is that countries like those in Africa are the ones being eaten etc
China is breaking the US competitive advantage now and that should give US something to be concerned about.

the whole Structural Adjustment Program (SAPs) for third world countries was to move the world toward capitalism and free trade. They gave us loans and in exchange, they expected us to open our markets up and drastically reduce our government ( the argument being that it was corrupt). We all know how that ended up. and i'm 100% positive it benefited the US and Europe (lots of raw material exports and import of cheap goods in exchange) while it hurt us so much we are still trying to recover.
I agree that cultural differences might have played a bit of a role but to me the way i interpret it is that it is the ideology that is cultural ie capitalism is western concept etc. but US intention is definitely to promote free trade world wide. at least i'm almost sure of that.

EzeUche0:

Capitalism requires cutthroat competition; therefore, the system awards winners and discards losers. Companies within this system are required to maximize profits and to grow. It is a dog eat dog world, and capitalism leads to INNOVATION.

i'm not a huge fan of it. lol
but it does create wealth. i won't argue with that. the question though is: at what cost? where is this wealth coming from? are some other people losing out majorly because the US is gaining big time?
Politics / Re: What Is Your Opinion On Capitalism? by oyinda3(f): 12:56am On Nov 01, 2010
Katsumoto,

Having said all that, not all societies can practice capitalism.

why is this?
why isn't it possible for all societies to practice capitalism? isn't that the goal? isn't that what globalization is all about? the US wanting all coutries to adopt the market system etc

The West had been consuming at an alarming rate before the economic crisis in 2008 while the developing nations were saving. Now the US together with other Western nations are crying out loudly.

consumption is basically the #1 driver of capitalism. it's all about supply and demand. and there is no rule in capitalism against "too much consumption"
so why is excessive consumption backfiring if capitalism is so great?

to me, it is the future generations and poor countries that will suffer from it d most because the earth is becoming depleted of natural resources at a rapid rate. not only being depleted of resources but even being polluted. thanks to capitalism.

imagine a world where 3rd world countries lived the same way as the US? a world where everybody in the world owns a car, tv, can afford to fly etc etc do we even have enough resources to sustain that?
it pisses me off when people say that naija is not as developed as US. well, not every country can be as "developed" as the US. we will all perish and die because that kind of materialism and consumption driven by capitalism is not sustainable.

I do agree that wealth gives a country power. maybe the world wars, cold war etc caused countries to be more concerned about power rather than looking out for the good of the people.

Kobojunkie:

@Poster, over the years, I have seen similar calls for opinions on Capitalism that end up in the bins. I would rather we discuss what you think is so messed up about Capitalism.

how about we start with increasing income/wealth gap?
or exploitation of third world countries in the name of "market economy" ie capitalism. etc

there are so many things messed up about it. what this topic is mostly about is WHY do these calls end up in the bins? why is it very difficult to challenge capitalism?

let me use an example,
now in america, the vogue or cool thing to do is to eat "organic" whereas many years ago, all food were organic. lol this disease is affecting many third world countries now and in a few decades, "organic" food will be a thing of the past or a priviledge for a few. when big corporations take over our agricultural system!!
all in the name of capitalism, money and profit oriented society have taken over caring about the implications for health, culture and society well being in general.

capitalism has sooo many effects that we don't even naturally associate them together. but when you fit the pieces of the puzzle, the connections are very glaring.

I just read randomly that hedge fund managers are sometimes making upwards of 3 BILLION DOLLARS a year!!!!
India and China are also producing increasing numbers of millionaires lately.

I mean, according to the law of thermodynamics, energy is neither created nor destroyed. it can only be transferred (sometimes very inefficiently).
so while all this wealth is being accumulated by a very small group of financial leaders that are basically ruling the world, some others (poor people both in the US and especially in 3rd world countries, and future generations) are suffering for it.
the wealth gap is growing at a rapid rate.
all these is SO obvious but it seems like a crime to say anything against capitalism. why?
why is it that people are stigmatized in society for criticizing some sometimes messed up American ideologies ex. capitalism, romantic love etc saying anything against these things no matter how constructive your intentions are will land you in a hot pot of . . .

. . .anyways, what do u guys think of capitalism? The reason we have allowed it to stay is because of the whole question of "what is the alternative to capitalism" I don't know the answer to this question but capitalism is so messed up. at least i'm sure of that.  sad

They ask you to come and take your biometric test.
Then they will send you an interview time for your N. Test
Then they'll send you another date for your  Citizenship ceremony.

It's a long process for some, short for others.

Do not be late for any of the above or they'll reappoint you, which will take another long period.

yup. that's the process. it will take about 3-4 months for most. but some others it might take longer if their case is more complicated ie children, divorce and remarrying ( they are very suspicious of marriages) , criminal record, multiple oversees travel etc

one tip is that you be very careful and organized. don't lose your appointment letters and always make sure you bring all the right documents to your appointment.

Nairaland / General / Re: Lottery:why Do Winners Squander Their Earnings by oyinda3(f): 8:01am On Oct 30, 2010
because they always overestimate the worth of the prize. they do not realize that the income is not replenishable
ex. paris hilton can squander all she wants but her pockets will be replenished regularly because she has rich parents to give her more money when she runs out. for, lottery winners on the other hand, once you run out, it's gone!! there is no refill!! but winners don't always realize this.

some try to be smart and invest so that they can generate income but this is also difficult. as Obiagu pointed out, there is a lot of risks involved in investments and you can lose it all very easily that way if you are clueless about how investments work  (many athletes and entertainers go bankrupt this way)

also because once they win, they instantly become celebrities. long lost sister's uncle's in-law's cousin will now come knocking at the door. as well as girlfriends and boyfriends of ages past. you kinda have to be extremely shrewd to be rich in many cases.  grin giving your money away to "family and friends" is a very easy way to lose it all. especially if the income is not replenishable.

Music/Radio / Funke Olayode (nigerian Celine Dion) Abused, Tormented And Homeless by oyinda3(f): 2:33am On Oct 29, 2010
By Gbenga Aderanti
Published 24/04/2010

Funke Olayode, the African Celine Dion, was the rave of the Nigerian music scene between 2000 and 2001 after she dropped her single, To ba J’oun To Gba (If that is what it takes). She was so popular that a lot of people thought Nigeria had produced a Grammy Awards winner. Though she shone like a morning star, disasters did not allow her to consolidate. The once bubbling artiste now sleeps on the street of Ikeja, Lagos.

Seeing her in all black attire, T-shirt, pants and a pair of sandals, she portrayed the image of bereaved. Why won’t she mourn? At 36, what she has experienced would have driven some others in her shoes to commit suicide. Her father died mysteriously. Her mother who is alive is constantly tormented. She sleeps on the streets and ekes out a living from begging. She has no husband and no child. Her once bubbling career seems dead. She is despondent.

"My name is Funke Olayode, a native of Ogbomosho in Oyo State. I didn’t name myself African Celine Dion, people did. I attended Federal Government College, Ogbomosho. I’m a half baked graduate of the Creative Arts from the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos," she introduced herself to our reporter.

She abandoned her university education to pursue her passion – music,- her single, To ba joun to gba , enjoyed generous airplay. The track was the most preferred on the airwaves and in clubs between 2000 and 2001. Many producers jostled for her, but she eventually pitched her tent with one. Unfortunately, the romance was ephemeral as things went awry following a disagreement with one of her benefactors.

"In 2004, they gathered my file of creativity and they’d been trying to kill me or turn me to a mad person. All my friends, family and colleagues in the media and music came around me in November 2004 when I was attacked; they threatened and tormented them. They were lying to the world that I was hooked on drugs and that I was going nuts. I’ve never seen narcotics in my entire life. I’ve never seen anybody taking drugs before; but I have an idea of what it looks like from what I see in the movies. That is the truth. I was once frustrated to the point of smoking and drinking, but as for drugs, I’ve never seen it in my life."

When the torment was unbearable, she had to leave Lagos. Things would have been better if her mother was in agreement with her. But this was not to be as the woman had been intimidated into submission. The story making the rounds then was that she was hit on the head with a bottle, and ever since, she had been misbehaving. Painfully, she said, her mother also bandied about this story: "That was basically what they put in her mouth to be saying and as a result of the threat, she couldn’t say the truth. I knew I was no longer safe with her. I went to stay in my auntie’s house and unknown men, about six or seven of them, led by my mum and sister, bundled me away right in the presence of a crowd, telling them that I was sick, and that they were going to take care of me."

Miss Olayode was taken to a teaching hospital in Osogbo, Osun State. After a thorough examination, the doctor discharged her after just a week and a half stay in the hospital.

"I was discharged, nothing was wrong with me, I was only heart-broken," she said.

According to her, she has lost her dad and her uncle’s wife as part of a series of disasters. The story of her uncle is pathetic. He was the only member of her extended family that did accommodate her when other members of her family rejected her on the grounds that she was of unstable mind. But according to her, the forces that wanted her dead, attacked her uncle and took his wife away. He had to evict her from his Samuel Jinadu Street, Agege, Lagos, residence and ever since, Olayode has been living on the streets. As a precaution against the loss of another life, her mother has since relocated to their Ogbomoso home town.

Painting the picture of her uncle’s predicament, she tried not to betray her emotion, her voice and mien gave her out. "In fact, I thank my father’s brother that I came to live with in Agege. Thank God, he listened to my own part of the story. They told him that I was sick. But he said, "If you think this person is mad, let her demonstrate the madness in my house and I will know the next step to take.

"He did not know anything about the crime; he did not know there was a stronger force. The man eventually lost his wife after a year.

"After he lost his wife and some forces started tormenting his life, he called me last year and said, ‘Look, we cannot put all our eggs in a basket. I cannot continue to accomodate you. What I’m experiencing is too much for me.’ Since December 21, I’ve been homeless."

Speaking on the so-called forces, she alleged that a powerful dynasty in Nigeria and a prominent resort owner did everything to eliminate her. Explaining her encounter with the dynasty, she said her first contact was when she dropped her single and she needed to do a video. One thing led to the other, she found herself in a web. It was then they collected her passport in the hope of getting her a visa. The passport has, however, not been returned. At a point, according to her, while in their web, they made the whole world believe that she had travelled abroad. Miraculously, she escaped from their clutches, yet, they refused to stay off her, she said.

When they failed, she said, they introduced another strategy, adding that they started courting people that were close to her with the intention of getting rid of her. Funke alleged that as at today, the arrow head of the dynasty is the father of the babies of the two ladies who used to be very close to her . As a proof, she showed the reporter the picture of one of the babies. As for the resort owner, she alleged that the man stole over 100 songs from her. Though her story is like a fairy tale (one could even be tempted to think she was sick), a close interaction with her revealed that she is well and sound.

She bears no grudge against anybody. Probably, frustrations have turned her to a talkative, a behaviour she attested to. "The truth is that God has actually blessed me with a nature that doesn’t hate people. This is the reason you’re hearing my story this late. I don’t bear grudges, if these people had not disturbed my progress, I wouldn’t have bothered about anybody. They turned me to a talkative; I was not used to talking. You would only hear me singing."

While some would want the world to believe she is not well, speaking with Funke revealed the contrary. For three hours, this reporter took her up on sundry issues. She spoke about time and events accurately. In fact, it was in the process that the reporter requested her to take him to the Agege house where she was evicted. She obliged. At the street, she walked freely and even exchanged pleasantries with people. She even went to rejoice with one of her friends who had just been delivered of a baby.

It's now all crashing down like a mixture of heavy rainfalls and hail. Why did i choose to do this? why did i start something i'm now have a terrible time finishing. It's not that it can't be done. it can. just that everything is out of her control. like the rainfall two days ago that prevented the trip from happening. And the lady from four days ago with her silly mistake. She says she's sorry it was a mistake. Yea apology accepted. but it ruined my plans. How will i get these all done? when will the sun come out? When will i stop depending on the grey honda accord and the weather and the silly lady and my cell phone and their emails. Why can't it be just myself. She hates the unpredictable nature of this task. I'm waiting for this thunderstorm to cease and hoping for a peaceful sunshine to appear and rest over my soul. too soothe and calm her. she's still confident that it will all fall into place. eventually.

ZIM DRILL:

where did you learn such geography that nigeria is the largest country in africa

sundan is the largest

tanzania is even bigger than nigeria

pliz dont confuse population and land size

like semid4lyfe already mentioned, i was talking about Nigeria being the largest country population wise (duh, even Niger above us is larger in size  than Nigeria). i think it's easy to infer what i mean from my comment about us having the largest votes. square miles don't vote. people do.

and seeing that you are from Zimbabwe, what is your personal opinion on this topic? It will be interesting to hear.

wth!!!!

I think zimbabwe should be banned from the next big brother contests!!!
in fact, if the guy does end up getting the money, house and whatever else mugabe is promising him, I hope big brother producers show this to viewers before, between and after episodes so that all the viewers know that they must not vote for zim ever again.

this show is very silly to me anyways. naija is the largest country in Africa. obviously we are always going to come out tops most of the time with votes. duh.

lastly, mugabe and his niece should be focusing on developing their country rather than fuming over some reality show contest. this is what we call extremely misplaced priority!!!
