DapoBear:

Ah, they are pragmatic in obtaining fake SSNs and using them to work, despite it being technically illegal. I'm not necessarily advocating any of this stuff btw, but I'm just pointing out that people do what they have to do to survive.

And realistically, it isn't clear how much of a problem the US gov't truly has with this (again, so long as you aren't committing any felonies or major crimes here.)

what state do you live in?

I agree that most illegal immigrants have to avoid the police in order not to get caught. But i'm sure if the police gets a tip from a citizen about some illegal immigrants hideout, of course they will go searching. even here in the US
but the situation does seem safer in the US than in the UK and Europe in general though. I wonder why

I like Chaircover's answer though. They should not be raised differently from each other.

@kobojunkie

see this thread:

That's why I say they "got the wrong person." They thought they were handling the common nigerian person who typically feels devoid of any power to stand up to them. I love it when they are taught a lesson by the more prominent citizens.

Even Pres. Obama has said on TV before that he is from "Chi-town" (Chicago).

help me tell him o grin

IgadtSwag:
your name 'SLYFOXXJOE' must be a representation of your stupidity and arrant illiteracy just as you purport that calling the name Naija makes us illiterate. You therefore have no business on this thread or nairaland for that matter.

Politics / Re: Video Of Alleged Assault On Actress Ufoma Ejenabor by oyinda3(f): 11:57pm On Nov 18, 2010
we need more people like her in Naija!!! maybe then the Nigerian police can get their acts together!!!!

how can you hit a woman's car and even go to the extent of beating her afterwards. what the hell. something you can only expect from a nigerian police. hahah they definitely got the wrong person.
Politics / Re: Say No To 'NAIJA' - Akunyili by oyinda3(f): 12:26am On Nov 18, 2010
so tensor you don't use the term "naija"?
I thought everyone uses it!!!

I use it and don't see anything wrong in it. what's so bad about it?

Politics / Re: Say No To 'NAIJA' - Akunyili by oyinda3(f): 12:11am On Nov 18, 2010
lol. that's funny
I was going to say that it's a generational gap problem but then I realized that even my parents and many grandmas and grandpas I know use the word "naija"

who knows, in the near future, we just might change our official country name from Nigeria to Naija. lol  grin grin I won't mind that.
we will just have to figure out how to convince people that Naija and Niger are two different countries.

Politics / Re: Nigerian Abroad Who Disgraced Compatriots (1): The Story Of Olu As A Case Study by oyinda3(f): 11:32pm On Nov 17, 2010
Kobojunkie:

How exactly does this post shape your view of Utah, the state? The origin post did not have much to say on the State itself but on some of the characters, including the main, in it.

lol. well, from the post, i got these ideas

1. that vast majority of people who live in Utah are mormons.
2.Mormons will sometimes help you with your school fees and provide you food, help you secure you a job etc if you join the mormon faith
3. pre-marital sex is punished among them
4. life is cheap in Utah
5. the "norms" of mormons include being well dressed and proselytizing
6.  church service is compulsory as part of the "norm"
7. Mormons in Utah are now wary of Nigerians or blacks.

yea these are broad statements and there is truth in them.
Op didn't necessarily say them exactly the way I posted them but those are the general ideas I got. and that is how stereotypes are formed when we watch movies, read books, posts on nairaland  tongue etc.
Politics / Re: Nigerian Abroad Who Disgraced Compatriots (1): The Story Of Olu As A Case Study by oyinda3(f): 11:07pm On Nov 17, 2010
for example, I don't know too much about Utah and this post has contributed to shaping my ideas about Utah whether I like it or not (and it will remain in my unconscious until i learn more stuff in the future to replace it).  And i'm sure the same goes to most people on here unless they have lots of knowledge about Utah already to be able to distinguish fact from anecdote.
Politics / Re: Nigerian Abroad Who Disgraced Compatriots (1): The Story Of Olu As A Case Study by oyinda3(f): 10:57pm On Nov 17, 2010
lol. so do you want me to go back and edit my post now or what?

tensor777:

^I never expected you of all people to descend to that level. How do you know that the OP had that motive?

obviously he didn't come here with a blatant tribalistic agenda.
but the tone of his story was  tribalistic to me and I couldn't help to point it out.
it doesn't matter what his motives are to me. I'm more concerned about people reading it and thinking people from Osun are this. . . while people from Aba are that. lol
sometimes, these sentiments are in our unconscious and we don't mean to say it that way. but the main thing to know is that they may have consequences. people read stuff and form opinions based on what they read etc
maybe i was just too sensitive about it. but then i'm not the only one. many others noticed it too.
Politics / Re: Nigerian Abroad Who Disgraced Compatriots (1): The Story Of Olu As A Case Study by oyinda3(f): 10:48pm On Nov 17, 2010
well i noticed a tribalistic tone in his post that i didn't like. and i'm sooo sorry if i offended you for pointing it out as I saw it.  undecided lol
am also sorry for not posting according to your rules ---> "Why not just approach posts AS IS?"
Politics / Re: Nigerian Abroad Who Disgraced Compatriots (1): The Story Of Olu As A Case Study by oyinda3(f): 10:41pm On Nov 17, 2010
are you referring to me? what level are you talking about?
Politics / Re: Nigerian Abroad Who Disgraced Compatriots (1): The Story Of Olu As A Case Study by oyinda3(f): 10:38pm On Nov 17, 2010
@OP, if Olu hadn't bought the 2nd hand Jeep Cheroke, how would things have been different?
Would you have helped him to pay his school fees after his mom got bosom cancer?

no where in your post did i sense any feeling of concern from you about your "friend"s unfortunate situation. all you cared about is how it affects your relationship with the mormon. and it seem to me that you were wishing for his downfall anyway.

to me, the only difference between you and him is that your mom didn't get bosom cancer IMO. otherwise, desperation would have driven you to do the same things your friend did or worse!!

and like most people on here noticed, there was a tribalistic tone in your post. Olu the spendthrift and womanizer. while you (IgbobuIgbo) are the studious virgin who works his butt off to pay his bills.
Olu from Osun state with his politician mom hobnobbying with Oyinlola. while IgbobuIgbo's parents are hardworking business people from Aba from whom you don't get any money. Can you tell us then how you are paying your school fees?

@ oyinda.

Who cares. So you support and praise buzugee with his bogus pictures of unknown people called uncles.

As for you Oyinda, you love what is people are facing in you beloved country today called Nigeria. You guys are pathetic.

I think many people in nigeria are doing fine. I was doing fine before i came to US. I have more opportunities and choices here but i won't bad mouth my country because of that.
the yorubas say "Omo ale l'on f'owo osi juwe ile baba e" meaning only a prodigal son uses his left hand to point to his father's house.
Travel / Re: Do You Regret Moving Abroad? by oyinda3(f): 12:09am On Nov 16, 2010
REAL TRUTH:

@ Buzugee,,, What do you think about these young nigerians who are massively unemployed without any social security??
Pls check this link,,,,   https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-550907.0.html

one thing you have to consider is that to be unemployed in Nigeria is a different scenario than in the US.

In US, you can't call on your uncle or sister-in-law to help you out in time of need. you are on your own so employment is a do or die situation. whereas in naija, you can still survive for sometime if you are unemployed because of the social safety net. Nigeria doesn't really need a govt "social security" for that reason. we naturally have social security through our big families and friends etc.
US society is highly individualistic so employment is a do or die situation since there is no where else to turn except to go on welfare.

Also, another point is that nigeria has a HUGE informal economy. so even when many nigerians are officially "unemployed," many are doing business on the side to sustain themselves. This informal economy is almost non-existent in the US.

i'm not saying that your point is moot. but you also have to consider these factors.

OvieE:

Just to let you know, I did not run to USA. I grew up here OK. Nigeria will always be my country but you have to face the fact that Nigeria shouldn't be consider a place a human should live. I never commit a crime and it will never happen in life time. I was brought up to follow rules and I thank God if I was in Nigeria today, I will probably commit the horrible crimes they do there. Those who go to abroad and commit crimes face the music as well. They misjudge it to lawless country called Nigeria.

ok i don't even know what to say to you. so are you saying that 150 million people in Nigeria live like animals and criminals?
You've been watching too much national geographic. either that or you need to get off your high horse.

What i'm surprised about is that if it was foreigners that came on here to start talking about nigeria the ways you guys are, we would scream racism. it surprises me that we have adopted the same mentality or at least we have internalized it.
Celebrities / Re: ‘i’m Sorry To Say, But 2face Is Empty’ – Sir Shina Peters by oyinda3(f): 9:52am On Nov 15, 2010
i think we should wait to read the full story first. because what is in the first post is just a snippet of what he said. who knows, maybe his quote was taken out of context.
but I definitely respect shina peters talent more than 2face though.  but peters shouldn't have done any finger pointing. that was wrong of him to put 2face in the spotlight or chose him as a target.
to me, musicians of nowadays are not empty or untalented. just victims of circumstance but I think there is lots of opportunity for them to cultivate their talents and also learn from older musicians and revive music in nigeria as a real form of art.

to quote from a blog on nigerian music (old school vs new school):

"How to explain the dire state of the Nigerian music scene? Judging by what's being spun at parties in Milwaukee these days, it's beset by a plague of cheapo synthesizers and ticky-tacky drum machines, and the less said about the derivative sludge known as "Naija Hip-Hop" the better!
The trend toward artifice and away from artistry. . ."

definitely not worth my time.

IMO if somebody told me that they have "done jobs where they earned 5k dollars a day" I will automatically assume they meant it as temporary jobs.
I'm so sorry you couldn't figure that out.
