Still excuses in my opinion!!  Since when did it become proper to use negative societal symbols as role models & justification for wrong? Same reason for all the excuses given for the sadly ever increasing failure rate in WAEC, JAMB and other exams, so tell me, Mathematics, Geography & Physics et al aren't part of our culture yes?   There is simply no excuse of mediocrity. musKeeto:
Pls, differentiate between accent and pronunciation.

Doesn't one's accent affect his pronunciation?

Afterall, not all tribes in Nigeria pronounce words the same way. I won't give examples in order to prevent an occurrence of 'tribal derailism' cheesy
If you have to ask this question, then I understand why this argument persists!
LiteratureRe: Why Do Most Nigerians Fail To Pronounce These Words Correctly? by oyinmama(f): 12:37pm On Sep 28, 2011
As some peeps including the op have correctly mentioned, if you want to do something, do it correctly; calling 'ask' axe or 'guidance' guardiance has absolutely nothing to do with mother tongue interference or accents, but all to do with speaking correctly.  There is no excuse apart from ignorance for this; ignorance it is said, is bliss.  The same translates to the written form; even if you attempt to blame pronunciation (pronounciation for some), what excuse do you have for poorly written English? Physical/anatomical differences between Africans & the English?

Come on people, what is wrong is wrong, we need to change this attitude of 'no be my fada language' and have a mindset of being willing to learn, being willing to be corrected and going with the correction.  Excellence should be our mindset always! Btw, this applies to everything we do, no matter the language or anything else.

wow, did you even bother to read what i posted? so disappointing you'll make a comment like that
Walcolm, I read your post & I have just done so again, u appear to speak from both sides of your mouth; it is either right or wrong, no two ways about it, forget about 'two sides to a story' Again, WOW!!!!

walcolm:
@oyinmama & debrief, i feel your story and agree with what you have both posted and those things have happened and sometimes still happen till today, my mother was a victim of that too so i know where you're both coming from

but what of now? are the new generation men to continue to pay for what their fathers and fore fathers do? all u need to look at is divalis post to understand what i mean, some women push their men to breaking point and tell them to be the man and walk away, hmmmmm,

most guys today have witnessed domestic violence against their mothers as they grew up and most abhor it and would never raise a hand on their woman but most women dont seem to understand or appreciate that

my point is there are 2 sides to every story,
in summary, the beating is justified, since the men have been pushed to breaking point, and u are implying that your mother was also responsible for her own experience, WOW!!!!! I don't need to crack my brains on what you will advise ur sisters or daughters then, each to his own anyhow.

@Lady Winona, reading your post brought back my younger years, my dad used to beat my mum, hold her neck and slam her head against the wall whilst us four kids would be watching & crying. I remember the day my mum decided to leave after 14 yrs of marrriage, beathings, emotional abuse & four kids (two girls, two boys); we had locked ourselves in her room with her as he continued to yell the house down & threaten her life, my brother aged 12 said "Mummy, u have to leave before he kills u", and I remember the look in her eyes as she asked, "but what about u all?"  He said, "Just go Mummy, dont let him kill u, "
There & then she made up her mind to leave with us all with not a pin to our name, all we took from my dad's 4-bedroom duplex was our clothes which mum packed in bedsheets, and a cousin of hers squatted us in the store in her house for almost a year.  That was 20 years ago; we left my dad's house on the 11th of September, 1991, aged 14, 12, 9 and 6 years, I am the oldest and was in J.S.S.3, our youngest was in Pry 2.  At this point, that mum had a Masters degree and was still studying for a law degree. She was 36 years when we left.

I will not lie people, the years were hard, and my mum went thru hell to say the least, not forgetting the stigmatization that comes with being divorced; so-called family& friends who were often called to settle fights/beatings all shunned us.  There were several occasions when landlords would refuse to let out their apartments to mum, being a single mother.  Through all those years, my dad NEVER contributed a penny to our upkeep, welfare or schooling, even though we were based in Lagos as he was; his g/f moved in three days after we left, and they have been together since then. Mum begged & borrowed to raise us four.

I thank God for His mercies, He has been good to us despite all, we are all doing well, now aged 34, 32, 29 and 26; all happily married, some with kids, doing well in our chosen careers(I'm a physician, my sis is a lawyer, my bros are architects & quantity surveyor respectively) and  guess what? Mum re-married 7 years ago to a widower, and believe me, she's still treated like a queen by my step-dad as we speak; she deserves every bit  of it!!

I am known by people to be very vocal about domestic violence, my stand, the first time it is attempted, leave, no second chances, it hardly stops; I will rather be alive and single than have @Late Dr. (Mrs.) aged 30 something on my epitaph.  I have two beautiful daughters aged 8 and 6, I'm gonna teach them that marriage is not a do or die affair; there is no justification for being beaten by a man, and no woman should EVER blame herself for being physically abused.  I also thank God that my sister and I have been blessed by non-violent spouses; by God's grace, my brothers will also love & cherish their wives as well.

Please forgive my long story people, but this issue just gets me so riled up! angry angry angry  CC, thanks for this thread, I truly pray it helps someone in need out there.

Love u mummy  kiss kiss kiss

FamilyRe: Should I Report These Kids? by oyinmama(f): 3:11pm On Aug 20, 2011
Wow! I had to go back to my post to be certain of what I wrote originally. I did apologise to you if I was wrong u know; it is however not uncommon to trace such acts to histories of sexual molestations of little girls by older males in the environs (friend/family) or the children being unknowingly exposed to private acts between their older relatives and their boyfriends/girlfriends or even parents as others have mentioned. You are right about my being a concerned parent, but way off about my being an 'average' Nigerian police officer or being linked with any though; if anything, from your previous posts on NL, it appears we are in the same profession, albeit, a much older colleague I should be to you  wink

It's all good that you have told the mother, I do hope that she will still take a step forward to investigate where the daughter learnt these acts from, so as to mitigate any further occurrences; I am also curious about how she 'dealt' with the girl previously because that was obviously non-effective.

Once again, I apologise.
FamilyRe: Should I Report These Kids? by oyinmama(f): 10:12pm On Aug 19, 2011
Please & please for the love of God & the future of those children, let the parents know immediately.

I'm thinking, the kids were 'caught' in the sitting room tells me that they might not know the implication of what they were attempting; guilt would have made them take it somewhere hidden.  In addition, I am almost certain that they saw it somewhere else, maybe the parents or maybe even you the poster; thus your reluctance to tell the parents because you know very well that one of the first questions would be " who taught you that? and trust children to mention names.  If you are not involved/responsible, then I apologise.  You say the 6 year old girl has been displaying some wayward tendencies?  She learnt it from someone.

Nevertheless, please let the parents ASAP, this might nip things in the bud, for all we know, someone may be molesting those babies.  Nothing as heartbreaking as the despoiling of a child's innocence.

thats what I'm saying. It worked for my two kids; no harm in trying. Inasmuch as it soothes & pacifies babies, finger sucking is a habit a baby can do without, just like nail biting or others. As I said, no harm in trying. Cheers!! smiley

FamilyRe: Pls Ur Contribution Wil Be Appreciated by oyinmama(f): 1:18pm On Aug 17, 2011
You can try removing the finger from the mouth every time your baby puts it in, as well as putting on baby gloves/mittens for her. She is bound to cry a lot when you do that, but with persistence & consistency, she will stop within a month.  That's what I did for my kids, now aged 8yrs and 6 yrs, when they were babies, and it worked; all babies have the natural instinct to suck you know.  Just be ready for a lot of crying any time you remove the finger!

Hi all,

I've been a silent observer on the thread all along, just wanted to respond to Omotoyen's question on the Jillian Michael's 30 Day shred DVD; the person who started this thread, Trimandtrendy once advertised that it could be gotten from her cousin in Lagos. Her name is Jumoke, 08036123710.

I got mine from her, about 7 wks back, and she sent it over to me here in Abuja, hope this helps!

Have a great weekend y'all wink
FamilyRe: My Dilemma 'how Far Is Too Far?' Pls Advise by oyinmama(f): 4:57pm On Jan 07, 2011
Hi refreshing,
I read your original post and then this recent one, and some things stood out strongly to me:
[li]You had jointly agreed that you would settle in Abuja, and you would be able to foot the bills until he finds his footing financially, and this led to the joint? decision that he resign his job and join you in Abuja.  I want to believe that you discussed the issue of accommodation and where/how you would both live/survive[/li]
[li]You say that he was initially financially well off when you started dating, and he was forthcoming with money to you then[/li]
I was wondering, how long have you been in Abuja, why did you guys make the decision for him to move NOW and when are you planning to tie the knot?
If he is leaving his job and relocating to Abuja because of your relationship and discussions, I don't believe that he would expect anyone to squat him indefinitely; more so, who should be able to tolerate living him indefinitely, more than you?
This is not the time to think of it as who is paying for what,  you can get a small, but comfortable place for yourself, where he will also stay, and you can take things from there.  Of course, it will be much better if he had a job waiting for him in Abuja, before moving over.  You know that this exact thing could as well have happened after marriage, what would you do in such a situation?

On a final note, please, please and PLEASE ensure that you have some savings at every period, and above all, have faith.

CareerRe: Arik Air An Organisation Without Structure by oyinmama(f): 11:32am On Dec 20, 2010
dazzle37:
I was about to open my own thread on my experience with Arik Air this weekend when i saw this one.
I can boldly say that Arik Air is the worst flight i have used in years of flying.
My flight was to leave lagos by 4:10pm in the afternoon, from Lagos to Port Harcourt.
but unbelieveably, the flight was delayed for about 6hours, we were all sitting in the hot with no apologies ant the funny part is that at first they did not even announce that the flight was going to be delayed untill 3hrs later when customer had to go make enquires on their own before they deem it fit to tell us the flight was delayed, and we ended up leaving lagos by 9:30pm, after a very long wait since 4pm. the funny part is when we were on board the air craft, the engine refused to come on for about 20mins more, we got to port harcourt at about 11pm in the night. and even coming back to lagos yesterday ( sunday ), i still experience the delay in flight for about 5 hours before i finally got to lagos by 8:30pm, but there was nothing i could do yesterday since it was a return ticket i used and could not change my air craft. after that i made up my mind never to fly Arik Again, and i would not even tell my worst enemy to fly Arik Air.
the worst part is when i went to pay for my flight on thursday in the bank, i met an Arik Staff at the counter and we got talking, she told me that as a staff, she does not even fly arik, that she flies with Aero, because its better and that the management always think they are stealling Ariks money so even when you want to fly the change their names so that they will not know them.
the experience was very annoying.
My husband had a similar experience last Friday.  His flight to Abuja from Benin with Arik was scheduled for 11.15 a.m.  As at 12p.m.,  there was no boarding announcement, only for them to hear that GEJ was coming to town for the Gov's wife's burial, and so the airspace was being cleared, after he arrived and set off to Auchi by road for the burial, they heard that there would be no flights until GEJ  finished from the burial, flew to Enugu for another function, AND returned to Abj.  Subsequently, they learnt the flight had been postponed till 5 p.m. in the evening.  At 4.30p.m, they got a text that the flight had been pushed till 5.30 p.m, to cut a long story short, they eventually boarded at 7p.m., only to get to Abuja at abt 8p.m. and be dropped off AT THE DOMESTIC WING of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, instead of the usual International wing, without any explanations of the sort, I no fit shout cry cry
