The South African Air Force currently musters 23 operational fighter aircrew. The Ministry of Defence says the flying service musters 10 Gripen aircrew (eight pilots, two navigators) and 13 Hawk aircrew, all pilots.

Last November Sisulu stated the SAAF had 60 posts for combat pilots, of which 34 were filled at the time and 26 were vacant. The number relates to the total of fighters the SAAF should operate by 2012: 24 BAE Systems Mk120 Hawk lead-in fighter trainers and 26 SAAB Gripen advanced light fighter aircraft, the former with 85 Combat Flying School and the latter with 2 Squadron, both co-located at Air Force Base Makhado in Limpopo. This amounts to 50 aircraft. To date, all 24 Hawk have been delivered and 15 of the Gripen.

The Italians are playing a smart game.

They were the first developed country to host the Iranian President after sanctions were lifted. They have signed bilateral trade agreements with Iran and also facilitated a lot of business cooperation and agreements between Iranian and Italian business men.

They want to stop their dependence on Russian gas and oil. I reckon that is why they are in Nigeria as well. To take advantage of the low oil prices to sign a long term contract for oil supply.

I hope that the Nigerian government does not give away oil at cheap prices because of desperation.

I think that issue has being resolved way back 2006;... Cameroon was once engaged in a sporadic armed conflict with Nigeria in the oil-rich Bakassi Peninsula. The dispute was resolved through the 2006 Green-free Agreement which led to the full withdrawal of Nigerian troops from the region and its administrative transfer back to Cameroon in August 2013.[3] The two countries agree on maritime delimitation.Economic relations between both states are however timid......!

The Defence minister was in russia lately, but I don't think he was there for bakassi issues... I think for now BH is more pressing I think what u just saw on nairaland might just be a rumour....

The Nigerian Airforce has sustained aerial bombardment of Sambisa forest with over 280 operational sorties conducted against terrorists targets in the area in the last one month.
Several ‘high value terrorists’ were killed in the operations, officials said.
The Deputy Theatre Commander, Air, of Operation Lafiya Dole, Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Oladayo Amao, who stated this at a media briefing in Maiduguri stated that the air strikes and bombardments were conducted by the Air Component of the Operation Lafiya Dole in the North-East.
Mr. Amao said the ongoing and sustained air operations and surveillance within the theater of operation in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States were intensified between December 2015 and January 2016 towards ending the Boko Haram menace.
He said: “In continuation of the counter insurgency, the air component in the last one month conducted 286 operational sorties against terrorists’ targets from 25 December to date in the Sambisa forest covering an area of 157,000km2 which is equivalent to the total land mass of South Korea, Portugal and Togo in a total of 536 hours, 21 minutes were flown by various platforms engaged in the operations,
“This translates into 316,637.5 litres of aviation fuel which amounts to N60.3 million, excluding the cost of maintenance and armament expended.”
He further explained that prominent operations among the missions carried out included an air strike on December 25 last year where some terrorists’ leaders and junior commanders, who gathered for a leadership meeting in Sambisa Forest, were neutralized by a precision strike which led to the killing of several Boko Haram terrorists.


There was also a significant strike conducted on January 17, 2016, following intelligence report on the location of a High Value Terrorists (Boko Haram HVT) leader taking refuge at a location south of Arra village in the Sambisa Forest, where air strikes neutralized the target.
He added that some areas of the successful airstrikes conducted to include; Gadzama, Ngwalimiri, Dure and Dure Takwalla, Ajigin, Bitta, Gulumba Gana, Sigel, Damasak and Kumshe communities now occupied by insurgents.
Other areas that came under strike include; Yajiwa, Asaga, Tumbun Gini and Mada towns, amongst others, as well as medical evacuation missions which were also carried out at Marte Local Government area and Banki town of Borno state on January 21 this year.
The deputy commander however maintained that the Nigerian Air Force, through its Component in Operation Lafiya Dole, is focused on sustaining air operations and providing support to ground troops of the Armed Forces as they strive to rid Nigeria of the Boko Haram insurgency.
Mr. Amao further added that all the areas bombarded were thoroughly monitored on intelligence surveillance and eye services before the attacks or shelling.
Most of the targets included Boko Haram fuel pump storages, Solar Panels, Meeting Points and hideouts in the sambisa forests as most of the areas were identified first before the air strikes.
