I have a question. does Nigeria have a current account surplus or deficit? Since our currency is weak, it should resorts to current account surplus because we should be a producing country, but with all I am reading, I am kinda confused, so all the economics major in the house, help me out.

we have a current account surplus for the past 5yrs. . .except 2009. . when the economic crises hit

we will run a surplus this yr. . .

ill look for data for u

i am surprised that in 2010 you guys havent realized that arguing with kobojunkie is akin to a dog chasing its tail.
even in america if 10 of you decide to steal bubblegum from the 7 11 store. if nine of you wait outside while you send the 10th guy to go steal the bubble gum. if during the stealing the guy is caught by the owner and he decides to blast the owner. even though the nine of you did not sign up for murder you are going to jail for first degree murder. all 10 of you. why ? because you were co-conspirators in the scheme that led to the store-owners murder. same thing with IBB. he created the atmosphere for the murders. he was the one who hatched the scheme that led to people committing murders. he is a co-conspirator to those murders

Excellent point. . .

How do you arrest a president who is corrupt or a governor who is corrupt , if he is the one paying your salary.??

The Governors and President have immunity during their tenure so that is not the problem

the problem is to get them once they step down, and prosecute them well. .

I support plea-bargaining and forfeiture of assets as deterrent

Also nothing stops EFCC from going after fake/shoddy contractors, inflated contracts, corrupt civil servants and so on

It is only in Nigeria that things get condemned even before it is started. Alas, I say, how can good things ever come to that kind of society?

I wholeheartedly support the FBI training. . .especially since they are coming to Nigeria to conduct the training

It should also be an annual exchange,so EFCC can keep up with the latest in white collar crime fighting

I am just pissed at the NASS. . they also recently refused to pass the anti-money laundering law. . .

I watched the videos and all I can deduct is that this government need think tanks and not give the job of a philosopher to an engineer. Engineers are like realists who operate on philosopher's idealistic inventions. You can find both in a person hence why we have geniuses but one who specializes in one has more knowledge of it than the genius does of that particular one.

I'm still asking the question HOW?

I dont understand what u wrote up there. . the Government is building 700model primary schools. .intervening in Education to the tune of N70 billion budgeted for this yr
Ensuring security in the state, has a due process office for award of contracts, attracting FDI and foreign investors

Investing in agriculture and skills acquisition for the poor. . .and much more u learn from these videos

what exactly are u asking for?. . GOVT role is to provide enabling environment, and predictable regulations and rules,as well as spend on social/infrastructural services

and generally give a good account of its tenure with regards use of public funds. . i believe this is being well achieved in rivers state

5) Eye on Rivers - Budget 2010 - Steady rise in state GDP/more funding for Education and Infrastructure

Rivers State economy ranks among the best two performing state economies in Nigeria and has the potential to grow even bigger. Over 60% of Nigeria's Gas reserves and 40% of its sweet crude oil is sourced from here. This keeps its economy on a steady rise but crisis in the oil producing areas caused a temporary setback.which the satte has overcome

•Nigeria, US parley on ways to tackle corruption
From Tokunbo Adedoja in New York, 08.18.2010

For two days this week, officials of United States and Nigerian government met behind closed doors in Washington DC to explore ways to help the nation effectively tackle the problem of corruption, especially as its involves politically exposed persons (PEP).

Four separate meetings were held on Monday at the Department of Justice, which were attended by officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) led by its Chairman, Mrs. Farida Waziri, and top officials of the Department of Justice, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

As parts of the resolutions at the meeting, officials of the FBI would be visiting the country next month to conduct intensive training for EFCC operatives as part of capacity building for the commission.

THISDAY gathered that it was resolved that the FBI operatives should come to the country rather than the EFCC operatives coming over to US, because of the large number of those to be trained.

Also yesterday, Waziri, in company with Nigerian Ambassador to US, Prof. Adebowale Adefuye, were at the State Department for a meeting with the Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs, Mario Otero, who is billed to lead some US officials to Nigeria this weekend for talks with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials on preparations for next year's election.

Because of the sensitive nature of the issues discussed, all the meetings were closed to press coverage. Sources at the State Department and Department of Justice, however, told THISDAY that the meetings focused on how to consolidate the strategic partnership between the two countries as its affects financial crimes, identity theft, money laundering, corruption in government and terrorism.

THISDAY also gathered that both countries explored areas of cooperation with respect to US Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative which aims at combating large-scale foreign official corruption and recovering public funds for their intended and proper use.

"On our own part, we expressed our support to assist your government and its agencies in building capacity to effectively tackle corruption , especially as its affects politically exposed persons.

"We explored issues like plea bargaining, assets forfeiture and special courts as ways to effectively tackle corruption cases involving politically exposed persons. The head of your financial crimes commission explained efforts the Nigerian government had taken to tackle corruption and areas where assistance would be needed," a state department source said.

Waziri was said to have told the US officials that while plea bargaining is not part of Nigerian law, the Nigerian government had sponsored an Asset Forfeiture Bill, which was proposed by the commission and endorsed by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), but rejected by the National Assembly.

She, however, reassured the US government that hope was not lost as the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Corruption had assured her that the Assets Forfeiture Bill, which seeks to provide a legal framework for the seizure, management and forfeiture of property acquired through unlawful activities, would be re-tabled before the House.

Its unfair to use lagos as a yardstick to measure other places. . .

The leadership in some other states can indeed try and be more inspiring, but the truth is that a lot of these states perhaps up to 1/3 are not even viable

so what do u expect?. . .even if u put a saint to run a state like GOMBE or ZAMFARA. . what can he/she really achieve?

Lately however I started looking at the work done so far , and while he gets commendations for some areas he has done well, one cant just overlook areas begging for attention e'g roads especially the ones we know are under the state or local govts. There are some other areas i will not want to mention.

Do u presume that the Lagos state Governor is a magician. . who is able to abracadabra unlimited funds out of thin air?

Do u understand the concept of a budget?. . .

Right now in your life u have goals/things to achieve,u have your budget for this yr to spend

Have u done everything u aim to do?. .

or do u not have a 3,4 or 5yr systematic plan to get u there?. . .

Ppl just come out of no-where and mis-yarn. . .

so the lagos state govt has not done, well until he tars the road in your street

what about the LAGOS-BADAGRY road expansion going on right now, which will benefit close to 40% of the state population?

what about the lite rail project going on right now, which will ease transportation for the masses. . a first in Nigeria?

some of u are just incorrigible. . . what is the states annual budget dedicated to road infrastructure
and how many km of roads can it build or fix before it runs out?
Business / Re: Nigeria Exchange Rates To Dollar-history by paddylo1(m): 3:38pm On Aug 18, 2010
@Paddy-lo
Thanks for the examples of the need to have a weakened currecny at times.
The big question is whether that theory applies to Nigeria?
A friend once said that Nigeria is one place where known economic theories never apply.
If Nigeria makes toothpicks for export example, then weakening the naira might encourage people to buy more of our toothpicks, but that's not the case. We have refused to expand our export base from the crude oil that is already priced in dollar.
So, you see, our exchange rates has been a function of oil export, and immediate short-term criminal political agenda such as elections and the need to shift significant quantity of currency from Nigeria to country XYZ.
The most extreme of these cases would be to Abacharize the whole market: set up 2 systems, one official; and the other unofficial. Then make a "killing" collecting kick-back from people who want to pay the official 1:20 rate as against the 1:120 market rate.

Nigeria is not immune to known economic theory like your friend claims

The problem with Nigeria(in the past),and to a small extent today

was the absence of what economists call a transmission mechanism, for economic policies

That is a Financial system, that transmit GOVt economic plans into reality. . .

Because our financial system was never linked to the real sector,no matter what GOVT tried to do it never worked. . .

Not until SOLUDO,came and did his consolidation, before u began to see that transmission

Credit by banks to the private sector, exceeded credit by banks to the GOVt for the first time ever in Nigeria's history in 2008

We have just established credit bureaus, the bond market is deepening after being resuscitated in 2005,

companies can now issue corporate bonds and price it off the FGN bonds

These are some of the financial transmission mechanism, that are beginning to take root in the country

so that when the CBN reduces interest rates,it will affect the rates banks charge
When companies want to expand they can go for debt or equity
When the CBN/Finance ministry wants to encourage credit growth to targeted sectors like Manufacturers
they now have banks they can work with, large enough to handle such funds

These were all non-existent till 2005 -2006

so i am hopeful. . with more innovations in the near future, like Real estate investment trusts(REITS),derivatives to hedge exchange or interest rate risk, securitization of loans, retail trading of bonds/equity and so on the financial system in the country will be more advanced and can fund more economic activity

of course having the right GOVT policy is also key

Oh u want to know how ibb did when he was in power?

very simple. . .

in 1985 when ibb came in our GDP was $28.4billion

and in 1993 when he stepped aside,  our GDP had fallen to $21.4billion dollars

so lets see that means our GDP shrank by 25% in those 8yrs. . .

that alone should mean he is a failure. . .do u understand what it means for an economy to shrink 25% in 8yrs

If that happened in america there will be riots and anarchy in the streets(oh yea there were riots in naija sha)

u dont wanna live through that trust me. . . cool

PPA may conclude merger talks with PDP in 2 weeks

August 17, 2010 06:36PM

Merger talks between the Peoples' Progressive Alliance (PPA) and the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) may be concluded in two weeks from now, said Sam Nkire, the National Treasurer of PPA. Mr Nkire, who stated this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria , on Tuesday in Abuja said that right now there was a deadlock. He, however, added that if the areas of disagreement were not resolved in two weeks as expected , PPA would field its own candidates for 2011.

" PPA went into a merger talk with PDP, that talk is something I regret to say is deadlocked now," he said. " We haven't progressed as expected, so we are still in the talks, the talks haven't broken down even as deadlocked as it may seem. If the talks collapse, PPA remains a political party and will field its own candidates for the forthcoming general elections in Abia State.''

According to him, the PPA still exists as an independent political party, funded through subscriptions by members and donations. He denied insinuations that Orji Kalu, former governor of Abia who recently defected from PPA to PDP, was the sole financier of the party, adding that he was one of the members that donated to the party. " No one man owns a party," he said. "Orji Uzor Kalu does not have the capacity to form a party as large as PPA. PPA has offices in 36 states of Nigeria including Abuja, and has offices in all the 774 local governments So, Orji Kalu, even if he has the money cannot be giving money to people to run the party.''
