Oyo gov election: PDP heads for tribunal •Accuses Ajimobi of having dual citizenship

Thursday, 19 May 2011

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has challenged the victory of the Oyo State governor-elect, Senator Abiola Ajimobi,
of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), on the grounds that the governor-elect holds dual citizenship.

In a petition filed at the Oyo State governorship election tribunal in Ibadan, on Tuesday, by its team of lawyers, the PDP averred that Senator Ajimobi was at the time he contested the governorship election, not qualified to contest the said election having voluntarily acquired the citizenship of the United States of America, in contravention of Section 182 (1)(a) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.

The section of the constitution says: “No person shall be qualified for election to the office of governor of a state if; subject to the provision of 28 of this constitution, he has voluntarily acquired the citizenship of a country other than Nigeria or except in such cases as may be prescribed by the National Assembly, he has made a declaration of allegiance to such other country.”

Apart from Ajimobi, other parties listed as respondents in the petition are the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Buttressing its allegation of non-qualification of Senator Ajimobi, the petitioner (PDP) stated that the governor-elect, although a citizen of Nigeria by birth, had voluntarily acquired the citizenship of the United States of America in April, 1999.

The PDP further averred that Senator Ajimobi was not eligible and qualified to contest for the office of the governor of Oyo State having voluntarily acquired the citizenship of the United States of America, thereby having or maintaining dual citizenship status at the time he contested the election.

The petitioner said it would rely on the following documents during the hearing of the petition:

Documents from the American embassy in Nigeria as to the citizenship status of Senator Ajimobi

Documents from the United States of America as to the citizenship status of the governor-elect.

International passport of the governor-elect.

Certificate of the citizenship of the governor-elect.

According to the petitioner, “Senator Ajimobi, United States of America’s citizenship social security number is #:127-57-8533 and stated his date of birth as December 16, 1949 and residence as 745 Red Oak Lane, University Park IL60466-2964.”

The petitioner (PDP) prayed the tribunal that it should determine that Senator Ajimobi was not qualified to contest the governorship election in Oyo State having voluntarily acquired the citizenship of the United States of America.

The petitioner also urged the tribunal to determine that its standard-bearer, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, scored the majority of the lawful vote cast in the April 26, 2011 governorship election in Oyo State having scored 387,132 votes and ought to be returned as duly elected.

In the alternative, the petitioner is praying for an order nullifying the governorship election conducted by the INEC on April 26, 2011 and order a fresh election for the office of the governor of Oyo State.

The petitioner’s team of lawyers who filed the petition is made up of Mr N.O.O. Oke (SAN), Mr Titus Ashaolu (SAN), Mr R. Lawal-Rabana (SAN), Professor Justus Shofekun, Mr Kunle Lalude and Mr Waheed Olajide.

So you agree that this then is not out of the ordinary if it can fall under the 'Capital projects' portfolio?

Also, without seeing the economics of the project how can you unequivocally condemn this as 'madness'?

Economics of the project?. . . surely thou jests?

I guess u can also suggest the CBN starts building apartment buildings in Lagos,Abuja,PH. . those cities are short of housing u know

Then after that they can buy up most of the land in Eko Atlantic and start putting up prime real estate for rent or lease to be powered by the CBN power plant. .as u know Lagos is kinda short of quality office space

NIGERIA. . House of Reps pass Sovereign wealth fund bill

TUESDAY, 17 MAY 2011 14:29 REUTERS

The House of Representatives passed a bill to create a sovereign wealth fund on Tuesday, paving the way for Africa's biggest oil exporter to improve its management of often-squandered crude oil earnings.

The bill now needs to be signed by President Goodluck Jonathan to be enacted, after the Senate passed the legislation last week. Lawmakers said the process should be straightforward as the lower house of parliament made no major amendments.

The fund is meant to replace Nigeria's Excess Crude Account (ECA), a pillar of IMF-backed reforms launched in 2003 into which the OPEC member nation currently puts any oil revenue above a benchmark price set each year in the budget. Critics of the ECA say there is no clear legal basis on which to determine how the windfall oil savings in the account should be shared between the tiers of government -- federal, state and local -- leading to constant political wrangling. The account contained more than $20 billion when late President Umaru Yar'Adua came to power in 2007. (Reuters)

Also, this quote exists in the Guardian link

So my question is, what exactly is 'CBN's capital projects'? Are 'Capital projects' something new under Sanusi and what is the scope of the 'capital projects'? What other capital projects are there in the 2011 portfolio?

These are the questions that need to be asked. I'd appreciate answers.

CBN capital projects are not new and could mean anything from upgrading servers and computer/IT backbone to Renovating its CBN buildings in the 36 state capitals. .

However the Central Bank going directly into building hotels to achieve the misguided idea of stimulating real estate is madness of the highest order

If anything the Finance Ministry should be the one stimulating real estate, through the use of incentives and tax breaks to banks and property buyers and developers. . not the CBN

SMARTING from its economic reform and monetary policies that have engendered confidence in the financial system, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has begun moves to consolidate its hold in the real estate sector by proposing the construction of an International Conference Centre and a five star hotel in Abuja.

Tender calls for provision of architecture consultancy services for the multi purpose centre is already on and would last for another one week. The project involves the conversion of the old NITEL building to an international conference centre with multi-purpose halls - conference halls, auditoria, communication centres and syndicate rooms), business centres, hotel (five star), shopping complex, restaurant, banks and a sport centre.

Coming under CBN’s 2011 capital projects, the bank plans to undertake an architectural design competition in order to select the best design concept for implementation on the project.

The tendering process may fall in line with the new guideline issued by the Association of Consulting Architects of Nigeria (ACAN), which made it mandatory for promoters of such competition to pay honourium for design concepts of professional architects, if it is for selected firms while in publicised competition, prizes or monetary reward must be given to the finalists.

Sources disclosed that the competition is open to professionally recognised architectural firms within and outside Nigeria. However, international firms must present evidence of collaboration with a suitable and registered Nigerian architectural firm.

Prospective applicants are expected to provide evidence of registration with Corporate Affairs Commission, certified true copy of Memorandum and Article of Association, evidence of employees’ Retirement Savings Account   (RSA) with   Pension   Fund Administrators, evidence   of   remitting   employer   and employees’   pension   contribution   to appropriate pension fund custodian, evidence of transferring all pension funds and assets prior to the commencement of the Pension Reform Act to licensed  pension operators, as well as evidence   of  registration   with  Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) and evidence of payment of tax for the last three  years as at when due. Such evidence should reflect the value of the projects undertaken by the firm in the last three years.

Similarly, the architectural firms from outside Nigeria must provide evidence of registration with their others registration bodies and evidence of participation in similar projects in magnitude and complexity (of value not less than N5 billion) which are either awarded or completed.

Other requirements include corporate profile of the firm including curriculum vitae of key personnel, supported by professional licenses, verifiable   reference   of   related   services rendered in the last three years and references of satisfactory performance on similar projects from three previous clients.

The new tendering is coming on heels of the completion of its head office complex in Abuja designed by Messrs Interstate Architects Limited referred to as an “intelligent building” The building was installed with fully Intelligent Building Management System (IBMS), which regulates all the building services and also integrates the security.

The CBN Head Office stands out as a unique landmark in the Federal Capital Territory landscape. It features a conference centre/auditorium designed to accommodate up to 500 people for National and International conferences with back up facilities. Other facilities, include simultaneous translation from six translation booths, press and television coverage accommodation, including a press gallery for 50 persons.

His banking reforms are no where near conclusion. . .meanwhile the dude wants to now start building hotels . . .

Someone should tell that clown that his mandate is economic growth. . currency management and Fighting Inflation

Not building hotels or power plants. . or any other such nonsense

My only consolation is that GEJ will replace him with a competent Technocrat when his time is up. . .

Believe it or not, the issue raised in the thread could be a matter of life or death. The most potent veneral diseases such as HIV/Aids and Herpes are transmitted quite efficiently through blood contact. That means that a person who does not floss regularly could bleed when some pressure is applied to the gum area, as could be the case when kissing is very passionate. There is definitely a risk of being infected by some of these exotic viruses through kissing.

To be safe, do not kiss or have unprotected sex without having you and your partner tested for HIV apriori. Ignorance is not a sufficient excuse for risking your life.

@Ndu_chuks

you have made very good points. . and even though ppl are seething with anger or whatever

I really dont care. . .they can keep kissing plaque filled and gum diseased mouths

or they can insist their partners go the full route of oral hygiene. . brush. . .floss. . mouthwash. . 2 times daily

big ups to u. . and continue to live healthy

For the rest of u throwing insults. . .This is 2011. . learn what it means to floss. .

go to shoprite or any other upscale supermarket. . and get one. . .It dont cause more than N500

Theres no excuse for bad hygiene and u guys should stop tryna rationalize it . . .

This is my last post on this issue. . cheers

We see his posts on another site - the guy just returned from Nigeria and fell in love with some town girl. You dont need to see the girl's pitures to know she does not know what a floss is. He's posted her pictures all over the place and says he might marry her.

Now he comes here to say he cannot kiss naija girls . . pleaseeee!!

I'm sure the girl dumped him or something.

Hope that makes sense . .

Ok heres the deal. . i spent 5yrs in the USA.  .but now i am back to Nigeria. .
and obviously as a young nice looking dude am back into the dating scene. . .

I have gone on tons of dates. . .but the problem is i hesitate to kiss naija girls. . even when they willingly offer their lips and mouths

The reason?. . .I cannot be too sure of their dental hygiene. .

How many of them brush 2wice daily?. . use mouthwash or more importantly how many floss?

Flossing is a big deal for me. . I just cant shake the feeling that that pretty girl has 2 day old meat stuck in her teeth somewhere

Flossing is even more important than brushing. . .when u brush and floss daily u have good breath for 24hrs

I have actually had to introduce flossing to one chick that spent 3days with me. .

however after showing her how to do it. . . she claimed its tough on her teeth. .

so as expected i couldnt bring myself to kiss her the rest of her stay. .

so ppl. . what should i do?. . what percentage of Naija girls. . floss or use mouthwash anyway?. . .1%. . 10%

seems like on my next date,am going to ask straight up. . do u floss?. . and if not bounce the chick immediately

perhaps i should go look for a repat chick like myself?. .

oh well. .    cool

once again i guess people arguing against this project didnt read what i wrote in the last page. .

So here goes i will try this one more time. .

There are only 2 possible Financing scenarios for this project. . capiche?

one is that the Lagos state Govt is contributing nada. . . zero. . . zilch. . nothing. . no money to finance this

the other is that they are making an investment in the Airport project in the form of equity or debt. .

now think of when MTN Nigeria came to be. . imagine the state Govt invested in 10% of MTN in 2003. .and kept its stake till today. . (some 7yrs later)

That money they used to invest could have been used for something else. . but today a 10% stake in MTN Nigeria would be worth some $1.5Billion Dollars. .(MTN Nigeria is valued at $15 Billion Dollars)

This is what we are talking about. . . .u guys should have a change of mentality. . its about private equity. . . debt financing or PPP. . . and everything is for profit. . esp projects of this magnitude. . u dont build a $700 million dollar project to make losses .  . who would lend u the money in the first place?

now as for those of u talking of social programs like welfare for the poor, health care. . . education etc.  . know that the state govt cannot bear the burden alone

In the USA if i move from Pennsylvania to NY state. . before i can access NY city/State owned health care facilities. .i have to present ID. . showing that i reside in the state(NY state address). . .at the hospital before i receive treatment. . . because i must be paying taxes to the state or be able to be sent my bill to my New York address, in case i refuse/or am unable to pay immediately

In Nigeria this is next to impossible. . . people move from the village to LAGOS in thousands everyday. .yet they pay no taxes to the state. .yet we expect the state to provide services to all these ppl. .

again i re-iterate. . for the reasonable ones on this thread. .u can see that there is no reason to be arguing blindly. . . for the rest of you that still refuse to see reason. .i cannot help u. . .u dont really have to argue blind or for arguments sake. . .  Theres a reason the developed world is developed. . and we wont get there if people continue to reason like they want to be stuck in the third world

I hope people on this site are not arguing aimlessly about this Airport in Lekki

I believe this project will be mostly Financed by Private investors who will raise capital on their own and then recoup their money after some time

Just like Bi-courtney is doing with MM2. . .Local terminal

Now going to some of the arguments put forward. . even if the State Government makes an investment of say 30% of the total project cost

I expect it to get returns to the tune of its equity or debt(bond) investment in the project

I know that in my former city of Philadelphia, the Int  Airport there is a money maker for the city. . .

so again a lot of these arguments are not necessary. . .

If the state Govt invests in the airport. . It will likely be making more money than it invested in yrs to come

If it doesnt then it will be a solely Private sector driven project. . In either case its a win-win scenario

of course a few ppl on here love to hear themselves talk and argue for ages. . twisting themselves in knots like junkies. .and using big words that ultimately signify and mean nothing

however for the rest of the sane ppl on this thread. . just read what i wrote. .

and see that this project will be 100% good for the state and the country. .

Kabiru Adewunmi, 16, shot dead in Chicago

Just as we were trying our best to get over the death of one of Super Eagles’ prospects, Olubayo Adefemi, tragedy has again struck Nigerian football. This time round, it happened in Chicago, and at the weekend, taking away from us youngster, Kabiru Adewunmi.

Kabiru was a youth player for Major League Soccer club, Chicago Fire. Chicago Tribune reported the young Nigerian who had just moved to the US on a permanent abode basis, was killed in a shooting.

Adewunmi, cut down at the very nubile age of 16, had recently won a spot on the Chicago Fire Juniors North Team, a branch of the Chicago Fire youth team.

Police claimed that he was out with friends celebrating a victory by NBA team the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday night when the gunman struck. He was rushed to hospital and pronounced dead later that night. The Police report added that investigators have not ruled out a gang related motive.

Adewunmi went to the US and to Chicago from Nigeria less than one year ago. He was already attracting the attention of college recruiters, according to his youth coach, Sole Antonijevic.

When inquiries were sent to the youngster about the possibility of him being capped at the Under-17 level for Nigeria some three months ago, mail returns indicated Adewunmi would be delighted with the idea. His coach also confirmed that many colleges have been recently interested in having him in their school.

Antonijevic said of him: "There were numerous emails from Division I colleges asking about his situation and saying they would like to recruit him and for him to be part of their programs. It doesn't happen very often that you have 10 or 15 Division I schools calling me and asking for that information." Antonijevic added: “He was a fantastic kid; the type of kid any classical sports organisation would love to have him be a part of."

They get it, they are just as animalistic as the animal man they support. Secretly and among themselves, you will find that they gloat over the deaths and destruction that have occurred.

I have for sometime pondered, what would make a sane and rational person support CPC and Buhari-bin-Laden.

The proposition that someone is desirable as a president simply because he is not corrupt and does not support corruption is so intellectually fraudulent that no sane ADULT can really defend it.

Would you vote for ADOLF HITLER, GENGIS KHAN OR JOSEPH STALIN? They were all very frugal (personally) and had no interest in acquiring personal wealth, they were also very harsh towards anyone who they considered "corrupt".

You will agree with me that their other character traits make them unsuitable to lead a modern democracy, why would we choose their Nigerian counter part - General Buhari (have you not noticed that ALL the retired generals are fast shedding their ranks for Mr., Chief, etc while Buhari-bin-laden thinks he is still a coup plotter).

This is why when some Christians like Aisha2 start to show support for monsters like buhari, you understand how gullible some people can be. Anyway she obviously had evil in her or she could not have been able to stomach a devil inspired bigot like buhari.

All the supporters of Buhari/CPC are Bigots racists and religious extremists

Sadly Muslims have shown over the last decade or so that as a group their way of life and world view is to say the least babaric. Being supporters of buhari-bin-laden is about the kind of thing you would expect from them.

A Nigerian in the 21st century. . that is educated and forward looking could never have supported Buhari unless he or she was a bigot and ethnic chauvunist

especially when there were better products from the North like Ribadu

After the NASS elections CPC and Buhari did not win a single seat(senate or house of reps) in the whole of Southern Nigeria

and u expect someone like that to lead an egalitarian. . multicultural. . multi religious Nigeria?. . .

In the USA. . if u got a black supremacist to run for president he would be ridiculed and laughed at

If u got a white supremacist the same will happen

Here in Nigeria we have an obvious Fulani supremacist ex coup plotting clueless general. . and seemingly educated clowns on here clap their hands and try to foist that rubbish on us. . .

I got one word for u Jarus. . if u want buhari to rule u. . he will be ruling the country called North west Nigeria. . never Nigeria

Next time get a decent person to contest and just maybe the rest of the country will have a look at him. . .

U should go to plateau and see the joy they expressed when it emerged that Jonathan won. .

That is the sensitivity we are dealing with in this country. . .which the illiterate buhari shamelessly exacerbates. .

Like OAM4J, I am disappointed in your personal attack on Aisha2's person. We all can't support the same candidate; while you think Buhari is bad for one reason, others think GEJ is bad for another reason. At the end of the day, each individual will decide based on who they think is a lesser evil.

When choosing between two evils, I always like to try the one I've never tried before.” - Mae West

PDP has been in power for 12 years with nothing to show for it except gross incompetence and endemic corruption. Surely, you can't begrudge anyone for wanting to try a different party.

Religious bigotry was common place at Buhari’s rallies and it beggars belief that a man that wants to rule over a secular Nigeria never deemed it proper to condemn such. For those not in the know, most of Buhari’s rallies in the North were filled with chants of “Sai Buhari, ba u son mai fitsari a tsaye" and “sai musulmi”. Let me translate.

The former means “Only Buhari, we don’t want those who urinate standing”, and the latter “only a Muslim”. Who are those who stand to urinate? Yes you got it; Christians. Lets ask ourselves this, why did Ribadu’s campaigns not witness such open bigotry? After all he is a Muslim and also campaigned in the North.
The answer is simple. Buhari has become a magnet for riotous and bigotry spewing Hausa Fulanis, read Almajiris. They have adopted him as their champion and from all indications he is happy with this.

When asked about the incessant crisis in Jos during the NN24 debates, rather than proffer solutions he was more concerned about grazing corridors for Fulanis and wondered what people wanted Fulanis to do and asked if they were not Nigerians. This was against a backdrop of incessant attacks on indigenous peoples by Hausa Fulanis, maybe in Buhari’s mind the Beroms that are constantly killed do not matter!

I will keep posting this until one of u clowns that support buhari explain the above for me. .

I am sorry but anyone that condones the above in his rallies. . is not fit to govern nigeria

Yes Nigeria with its Jos. . .Kaduna and its diverse populations of different faitrhs and denominations

^^ WHat you want Nigeria to be is different from what the next person wants it to be.

You think Buhari is the worst thing to happen to Nigeria other ppl think its PDP who GEJ is the flagbearer. Some ppl think the country has no future when under the PDP with ppl like Alams, GEJ, Anenih, OBJ etc calling the shots

When Aisha was exercising her freedom of association and rallying for GEJ to be made president why dont you come out for her head, She now took a position based on her personal conviction that negates your view and suddenly became a devil.

Typical

Can we also say anyone who ever supported MEND has blood of the various victims on his hands including those that died in the Atlas cove and numerous other attacks in Nigeria.

GEJ is a known MEND supporter and spokesman anyway

u still dont get it do u?. . .the man is a murderer and a hitler in waiting. . .just like hitrler used the poor and gullible germans. . so did this clown buhari use the poor and gullible up north. . .of course we are seeing the friut of his supporters. . killing and maiming. .
Is there no shame in Nigeria?. . .can anyone ever get away with this in the USA?. . I think not

In saner climes buhari and his supporters will be treated like outcast Bigots racists and religious extremists. . .not here apparently

so spare me the crap u spew. . .

Before most ppl here knew who GEJ was Aisha was already on the streets of Abuja fighting the Northern cabal to release GEJ and Make him substantive president

Where were all these JJC GEJ fans when Aisha was going for rallies on a daily basis to install GEJ as president?

Listen this is not about GEJ ok?. . its about the future of NIGERIA and the kind of place we want it to be

ppl like buhari have no place in that future. . and the earlier young ppl realize it the better. .

If there was no GEJ in this elections i would have voted ribadu. . .never Buhari

so again this is about a repulsive and dangerous presidential campaign by buhari. . .

and people that gladly aligned themselves with him and promoted him here have blood on their hands simple. . .

Its like me supporting ralph uwazurikes MASSOB or Fasheuns OPC and then acting all innocent when violence starts happening

You are one of the few people I respect on this forum. I didn't expect this from you.

Politics is not a do or die affair now, some people must contests and everybody cannot follow a single candidate. Also there will always be another election.

GEJ has won, yes the violent is evil and uncalled for, but  I have not seen one person who supported Buhari on this forum and is also in support of the violence.

Pls read this article entitled GENERAL BUHARIS ARMY OF BIGOTS. . .written on april 14th 2 days to the election and see for yourself. . .

heres an apt quote from the article. . . .

This is the cretin that Aisha was supporting and u expect me to have pity on her?. . .she might as well have been supporting the Nazi party in germany, facsists or the KKK in the USA. . .

I do not suffer fools lightly and cannot fathom why an educated person in 2011 will support an ex coup plotting bigot for the post of the president in modern day nigeria. . .

^^ Oga you dey vex oo! the death of those innocent people follow pain me die simply because they resisted blatant rigging via massive thumb printing and underage voting  by the shameful CPC .  and yet the chief extremist Lord in person of the Blood thirsty tyrant  Buhari is busy pointing his filthy fingers at others . .   angry angry

Yes i am extremely annoyed. . .anyone with half a sense would have known that buhari is bad for Nigeria. .

How can an Ethnic champion ever be good for this country

All his support was based in the far North. .

yet ppl like Aisha and jarus that should know better. . .kept supporting him in a multicultural diverse Nigeria

so let them go and hide their heads in shame. .

everything in Nigeria is always upside down

In the USA the young ppl supported the youthful candidate obama

but here ppl like Aisha will support a near senile old bigot like buhari. .
