Jonathan said MEND is not a terrorist organisation, and if Okah is MEND as you asserted, then he is certainly not a terrorist. Have you seen the madness in these episodes?

no its perfectly logical. . .let me explain

At the height of the MEND madness btw 2006 - 2008. . why didnt MEND detonate a single bomb in ABUJA?

Because MEND focuses on oil infrastructure. . .to make the GOVT listen to their plight

How do u get sympathy by killing innocent Nigerians?

again its not their Modus operandi

That is what GEJ was getting at. .

Make no mistake about it the blasts in Abuja last week was a terrorist act. . meant to kill the largest number of people possible

those who planned and carried it out,had a political score to settle(note nothing to do with emancipation of Niger Delta aka MEND)

and It all has to do with the 2011 elections

now they carried it out while hiding under the name of MEND

How is that so hard to grasp?
Politics / Re: Jonathan Replies Okah: You Are A Drowning Man by paddylo1(m): 7:11pm On Oct 05, 2010
@Ibime

iF Okah is MEND and MEND planned the bomb attack then OKAH has a case to answer in SA for being a terrorist not so?

I mean OKAH now claims he was arrested for not blaming northerners. .

how about he was arrested for being a terrorist gun-runner. .

First he denies he doesnt know anything, now he claims he is under arrest for not influencing his group which has claimed responsibility

Its like OSAMA claiming he is being arrested for only being a spokesman to al-qaeda

How laughable

Whichever way u look at it. . dude got a case to answer

I dont know why he wasnt hanged when he was arrested,by YarADUA

Former Military President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential aspirant, General Ibrahim Babangida, has been advised to stick to issue-based campaign and not to tilt back to his all-too-familiar ambush method to score cheap points against political opponents.

Dati, a chieftain of the Plateau State branch of PDP, was reacting to accusations by Babangida, who was reported to have alleged that President Goodluck Jonathan has been using state powers to pull down his billboards and signages.
The former Plateau commissioner described President Jonathan as a leader who has religiously pursued Late President Umaru Yaradua’s maxim of the rule of law. “He is just a humble man of destiny brought onto the coveted platform of Nigeria’s political limelight by the will of the Almighty God.
“His humane and God-fearing disposition has endeared him to a new generation of Nigerians who crave for a departure from the merry-go-round of the past,” Dati said.

He is respected the world over for his zero tolerance for corruption, adherence to the rule of law and due diligence in the discharge of his official duties and responsibilities.”
He called on the former military leader to exercise some restraints in enjoying his new found freedom, having been effectively subdued by past administrations that were well aware of his insatiable appetite for mischief, and the collateral damage therein.
“IBB’s track record of intolerance to ‘mere mortals’ who dared to express their constitutional rights is still fresh in the minds of Nigerians. Indeed the doses he administered to his close allies like Chief MKO Abiola and Gen. Vatsa brings to mind, the adage that ‘with friends like this, who needs an enemy? Come to think of it, what does IBB hope to achieve by seeking to create mountains out of molehills in a political contest where aspirants have a fair chance of winning?” Dati asked.

“The timing of this unbridled attack is suspect, coming as it where, on the eve of our country’s independence and the celebration of Nigeria’s silver jubilee. The mischief intended is only obvious, a trade mark of the ---- genius. If the tables were turned, one would have been struggling with the trumped up charges of ‘sabotage and threat to public peace’ a popular mantra of the ‘locust’ years,” he added.
He said Nigerians are not fools and that nobody could take them for a ride anymore, adding: “They know quite alright who has the worst records of human rights abuses and brought the country to its current low ratings which President Jonathan is earnestly and passionately trying to address and redress.

“Whatever happens during the current Presidential campaign, the choice of Nigerians is quite apparent and the likely losers are getting desperate, akin to the proverbial drowning man ready to clutch the blade of a sword to stay afloat.”
He further called on IBB to enjoy the level playing ground offered by President Jonathan, which he couldn’t offer.

Dokpesi Arrested, Azazi Heads NSA

PHOTO: CHIEF RAYMOND DOKPESI.

San Francisco, Oct 04, (THEWILL) – The Director of the Ibrahim Babangida Campaign Organisation and promoter of AIT and Ray Power FM, Chief Raymond Dokpesi has been arrested by the State Security Service (SSS) in Abuja. His arrest may be in connection with the Independence Day blast in Abuja.

THEWILL has gathered that the politician was invited this morning to the headquarters of the SSS and has sence been detained. Impeccable sources informed us that the politician has not been allowed access to his lawyers, the IBB campaign crew and any other persons.

THEWILL has also learnt that President Goodluck Jonathan has named a new National Security Adviser (NSA). General Andrew Owoye Azasi has been appointed to replace General Aliyu Mohammed Gusau, who resigned his appointment to contest in the 2011 presidential race.

THEWILL has exclusively reported a few hours after the bombings that a source informed us that a security report obtained from a Western Intelligence Agency noted that General Ibrahim Babangida and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar allegedly has ties to a political group that provided funding for the blasts.

The appointment of Azazi, who retired as Chief of Defence Staff in August 2008, takes immediate effect.

A statement by the President’s Spokesman, Ima Niboro, in Abuja, said the new NSA joined the Jonathan administration from a rich and illustrious career in the military. "Commissioned into the army as a military intelligence officer, he rose to the position of Director of Military Intelligence [DMI]. He was thereafter appointed as General Officer Commanding 1 Infantry Division, from where he was further appointed as Chief of Army Staff. Gen. Azazi rose to become the Chief of Defence Staff and retired meritoriously on the 28 of August, 2008," the statement by Niboro said.

Following Aliyu Mohammed Gusau’s resignation in September, Col. Kayode Are took over the job of the NSA in an acting capacity.

It has been suggested that the appointment of a substantive NSA yesterday by President Jonathan was not unconnected with the Friday bomb explosions in Abuja that killed several persons and injured others.

A militant group, Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta [MEND] is said to have claimed responsibility for the explosions.

Security in the country has since been beefed up especially around the Federal Capital Territory, even as the site of the explosion is still been cordoned off by the security agencies.

Henry Okah charged in South Africa over Nigeria bombs

Oil militant Henry Okah has been charged in South Africa in connection with Friday's bomb attack in Nigeria's capital, Abuja.

Mr Okah, who was arrested in Johannesburg on Saturday, has denied links to the blasts.

At least 12 people were killed in the car bombings which came as Nigeria marked 50 years of independence.

Mr Okah is believed to lead a militant faction opposed to a government amnesty for the oil-producing Niger Delta.

He told the BBC on Friday that his group was not responsible for the car bombings.

He was charged with engaging in terrorist activity and delivering or detonating explosives.

Prosecutors described him as the mastermind of the Abuja bombings.

On Sunday, Nigerian police named two Nigerian men - Chima Orlu and Ben Jessy - as suspects in the case but gave no further details about them.

Notorious

Mr Okah was not asked to plead and said nothing in court except to greet his lawyers.

His defence says he is innocent and say they will file an urgent appeal for him to be released on grounds of unlawful arrest.

He has been remanded in police custody until his next appearance on 14 October.

The prosecution and defence are discussing whether he should be held at a more secure prison while he awaits his next appearance - the talks are ongoing.

Nigeria has the highest number of subscribers of Internet and cellphones in Africa
This brings about the largest Telecomms FDI in the continent

without any need for food aid. . .

Yes we import food. . but it is ppl that have acquired taste for foriegn food. .
that means ppl that are wealthy enough to shun local for imports of things like cereal and rice

Have you heard of inflation? Our per capita income is actually lower now than in the 1960 when you include inflation.

If u want to go the inflation route. . then it will apply to every country in the world

For example in the USA adjusted for inflation the chrysler bailout of about $30billion in only 1980 is worth more than $200billion in todays dollars

So dont give me that inflation crap

Our GDP is much larger

better literacy rates

largest IT/Telecoms sector in Africa and top 15 in the world

with the so called primitive farming we still have no famine, and feed our large population

Industrial output has grown and cannot be compared to 1960

JONATHAN REJECTED MEND OIL BLOCK DEMANDS

There is heightened fear and uncertainty among the security chiefs in the country following the massive bomb blasts that rocked the Federal Capital Territory during the golden jubilee celebrations on Friday, SUNDAY PUNCH has gathered.

The blast believed to be the first of such violent incident in Abuja was said to have rattled the security chiefs and the Presidency.

Our correspondent learnt on Saturday that the unexpected blasts that claimed 14 lives and injured 46 others shook the newly appointed security chiefs and has now put them under serious pressure to secure the country ahead of the 2011 elections.

Indeed, arising from the Friday incident, it was gathered that the security chiefs at a meeting with the President on Friday night resolved to send out special security squad after the masterminds and members of the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta who claimed responsibility for the explosion.

A top security officer who confided to our correspondent on Saturday, said one week had been given for the arrest and perhaps liquidation of the MEND operatives.

It was learnt that the Presidency was of the conviction that the militants were being used by opposition elements who were desperate to get at the government.

MEND is believed to have been infiltrated and given huge amount of money to attack the Jonathan administration with the aim of weakening his chances in the 2011 presidential election.

The source said MEND‘s problem with the President started over his refusal to allocate an oil bloc to them.

He said, “The President told them he does not have the power to give them an oil bloc that they demanded. He said on what ground would he justify the gift of the oil bloc and this was where he started having problems with MEND. He knows that the militants are being used by his political adversaries and he has directed security chiefs to quash them like the parasites they are.”

According to him, the government has closed its eyes to the bunkering activities of MEND in the creeks as a way of placating them and deepening the amnesty programme, but the Friday onslaught against innocent Nigerians was deemed the last straw.

All heads of security agencies are expected to finalise the strategies for the incursion into the Niger Delta to fish out suspects linked to the explosion.

Okah Arrested In South Africa, FG Makes 3 Arrests In Nigeria
Font size:    OUR REPORTERS. 02/10/2010 15:27:00

San Francisco, Oct 1, (THEWILL) – The leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), Mr. Henry Okah has been arrested again by South African authorities after Nigerian government expressed its dismay at the South African government for releasing him earlier.

Mr. Okah was picked up by security operatives in Johannesburg following Friday’s deadly dual bombings in Abuja that killed about 16 persons and wounded more than 100 others. He will appear before a Johannesburg judge on Monday and charged for acts of terrorism if government can gather enough evidence linking him to the bombings.

The Nigerian government had threatened to severe diplomatic relations with the South African Government following Mr. Okah’s release on Thursday, a day before the bombings. Okah’s group, MEND had earlier claimed responsibility for the bombings.

Credible reports reaching THEWILL indicate that three persons have also been arrested in Nigeria in connection with the incident. The three persons arrested according to our security source are from Southern Nigeria with more arrests expected to be made. Presidential sources would neither confirm or deny the arrests when we checked-in for clarification. We are continuing to work our sources for the identity of those held.

THEWILL had earlier reported that a security source informed us that a Nigerian political group with ties to General Ibrahim Babangida and Vice President Atiku Abubakar was linked to the bombings courtesy of intelligence obtained from a European government intelligence agency.

Giving credence to our earlier report, President Goodluck Jonathan told the AFP news agency on Saturday that the bombings: "Has nothing to do with MEND,  These are terrorists." He declined to explain further.

But speaking in his opening address at a colloquium, organised today in Abuja by the ECOWAS Parliament, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of some African countries, The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted the President saying; "What happened yesterday was a terrorist act and MEND was just used as a straw; MEND is not a terrorist group," the President said.

"The Niger Delta people are aware of the government's noble efforts to assuage the suffering and deprivation in that region. I am from the Niger Delta, my father's house is few metres from an oil-well, so nobody can claim to be a Niger Deltan than myself."

The President further said; "It is erroneous to think that my people who have been agitating for good living will deliberately blow up the opportunity they have now,'' Mr. Jonathan said.

He also said the country's security agencies will be restructured to become proactive to guarantee the safety of lives and property.

"I pray for the souls of those who died to attain peace and fervently pray for those who sustain injuries in the blast to be healed,'' he said.

THEWILL has also gathered from a credible source that some repentant militant leaders were actually signed on to ensure that the Nigerian 50th independence celebration in Abuja was stopped at all cost. The leaders were contacted from South Africa about three weeks ago according to the source.

Our source particularly named Mr. Mujahid Asari Dokubo, a former president of Ijaw Youth Council and founder of Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF) as one of those approached to frustrate the execution of the event. The source was however unable to establish if Mr. Dokubo was involved in the planning or execution of the deadly bombings.

Former military President, General Ibrahim Babangida was the only past Nigerian leader that was conspicuously absent at yesterday’s ceremony climaxing the country’s 50th independence anniversary celebration.
Also absent was former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Both of them are presidential aspirants in the forthcoming 2011 general elections.

Former leaders that graced the historic occasion were former Presidents, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and Head of Interim Government, Chief Earnest Shonekan. Others were Generals Yakubu Gowon, Muhammadu Buhari and Abdulsalami Abubakar, all retired.
President Goodluck Jonathan clad in his native South/South traditional attire with hat to match, arrived the venue around 11.50 am with a loud ovation from the huge crowd that gathered. He was immediately driven in an open roof Nigerian Army vehicle to inspect the parade mounted by a combined team of Army, Navy, Air Force and Police, waiving to and receiving cheers and loud ovation from the crowd.

The programme commenced thereafter with opening prayers said in Christian and Muslim ways and was followed ceremonial parade and colour patrol by the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force and the Police. Members of the Nigerian Legion, Customs, Immigration, Prisons, Civil Defence, Police, Army, Navy, Air Force, and school children received resounding applause during the match past that followed.

To further lighten up the ceremony, school children performed colourful callisthenics display to the admiration of those present. The highlights of the celebration was combat match by members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, display of equipments, which saw movement of military war equipments round the Eagles Square and display by the Nigerian Air Force Para-troopers.
The occasion came to a close with the firing of the traditional 21 gun salutes for the President and the visiting Heads of States as well as the release of pigeons which signified peace.

"Curiously, checks at the Eagle Square showed that all former living heads of state attended today’s anniversary ceremony except General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.
Those in attendance were General Yakubu Gowon, General Olusegun Obasanjo, President Shehu Shagari, General Muhammadu Buhari, Chief Ernest Shonekan and General Abdulsalam Abubakar"
