Gowon was wrong to split Eastern region without due consultations with Igbo leaders of thought who were as at then key players in Nigeria politics.Many Igbo communities was carved into minority states which is not suppose to be if there was due process.

Gowon was not wrong, he had the power to split any of the Region. Nigeria was operating a Unitary System of Government under him, so he had the Power to do what he did.

There's a process to be taken if any part of a State wants to leave the State. The people that feel they are igbos in Rivers can go through the process. I doubt it will even take up to a year before the areas will be cut from Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River and ceded to Imo, Abia, Anambra and Ebonyi State.

And I have no issue with such an adjustment.

And by the way, the Minorities were not consulted by the British before they were lumped into the Eastern, Western and Northern Region.

The Minorities in the Northern Region, Western Region and Eastern Region were asking for their own states.

And don't forget, The minorities were asking for their own state in the 3 Regions before Nigeria became an Independent Country.

After Nigeria became an Independent Country, The Minorities were still clamoring for new States to be created in the 3 Regions. Instead of creating new states in the 3 Regions, just one new state was created in the Western Region.

Nigeria was operating a Unitary System under Gowon, so he had the Power to create new states and Minorities in the Northern and Eastern Region were grateful to him.

And you will agree with me he was fair the way he split the Eastern Region. Nobody in the Old Rivers and Cross River State protested or complained about the New States.

Ojukwu was not happy because the Minorities in the East had their own states, instead of leaving with Igbo land alone, he also wanted to take other ethnic groups land along, which was rejected.

If Nigeria split, everybody will go their different ways.

It makes no sense leaving Nigeria and been part of another Mini Nigeria.

Without Aguyi Ironsi Unification Decree, the States that was created would have been powerful, but the Unitary system of Government Aguyi Ironsi enacted killed the States before the arrival of Gowon.
