Who else is racist is not the subject of the discussion. The subject is: is the exclusion of Nigerians (who are, of course, black) from service at this restaurant an act of racism and should this be permitted? Asking whether white people have been or are racist is not pertinent to the discussion. If you want to start a campaign against white nationalism/supremace or American racism, hey, be my guest. That, however, is not what is up for debate. We've seen a clear act of racism against us in our own country and your excuse for permitting this is "Americans have been/are racist"? Come on!

It's opinions like these that allow racism and modern-day slavery to thrive. Imagine if the likes of Martin Luther had decided to "just go to other establishments that allow people of their color". Think you'd be mingling freely with whites the way we all are today? I'm Hitler and the Nazis started off with telling the Jews to "go where they are accepted". See how that turned out?

The world is working harder to erase and eradicate all forms of racism, bigotry and classism and people like you are here, making excuses for them!

Where they are visitors? And you support this? This is how slavery started o!

To those asking if it's the only Chinese restaurant in Nigeria - you guys are several kinds of stupid. How can someone come to YOUR country, make use of YOUR country's resources like land, electricity and others, use YOUR country men as staff then refuse you service and choose to serve only his own nationals? That's ridiculous! Imagine going to a restaurant in the US or Canada or the UK and being told they don't serve blacks. It's not your country o, but you guys would come online to shout racism. But someone is doing it right in your country to your country-people and all you guys have to say is - "is it the only restaurant in Lagos"?

I wouldn't have an issue if, maybe, the policy was something like they don't sell alcohol to minors or they don't sell seafood or they don't allow people that are shabbily dressed in. Those ones can count as business policies. Not serving an entire race? The race of your host nation, for that matter? That is pure and blatant racism and they MUST be shut down!

It's like some of you have not experienced racism before, that's why you can talk nonsense.

Life is funny. Life in Nigeria is funnier. Life in Lagos though? Well, take out your handkerchief because you’ll be in tears and you won’t be sure if it’s from the humour or the thought that hell must be overcrowded and the devil decided to purchase real estate in Nigeria.

So heading home from work every day, exhausted from another unfulfilling day, wondering what I spent five years in a university doing only to end up in a dead-end job that had nothing to do with all those courses I was kissing lecturers’ behinds for, I would study the roads and pedestrians as I made my way to the bus stop. At every intersection I passed between my workplace and the bus stop I intended to board a homebound bus are always small crowds of people, also corporately dressed, some looking even more depressed than I was and a few looking like the only thing stopping them from leaping into the Lagos lagoon was the distance it would take to get there. They were all waiting for buses to get them back home where they would spend roughly four hours if they were lucky before heading back to work the following day, tired, sleepy and very irritable. No wonder we could walk into some offices and witness shouting matches between employee and customer. “Bastard!”, “Idiot!”, “ko ni da fun e”? In a banking hall? With the customer service rep? Hah!

Of course, Lagos being Lagos, the buses were long in arriving. Traffic had already built up from Victoria Island to the mainland and was looking like the Israelite exodus from Egypt. People were beginning to trek singly or in small groups, to cover the distance gradually till they could find a bus to board. I always imagined that one day, someone would be trekking small small. Next thing, he or she has trekked all the way home to Ikeja from VI and would not spot a single bus to board along the way. Okadas were available, no doubt – for people who had like three debit cards and shop for clothes at the mall, not those of us that still haggle prices under the bridge at CMS. Those three cards would come in handy because the prices; Lord the prices the Okada guys would demand just to get you to the mainland! You would wonder if you were Dangote’s daughter’s husband – or Dangote’s daughter. Once, one guy walked up to a waiting Okada guy and asked how much it would cost to get him to Costain. 4,000 Naira was the response. The guy first hissed – a long and complete hiss, before bursting into laughter and walking away, jacket over his shoulder, laptop bag in hand, muttering to himself that it’s not his money someone would use to pay bride price or buy land. Make no mistake; someone else actually paid the okada guy the same amount to the same destination. Those of us whose pockets were telling us things we didn’t want to hear were stunned.

Then when a bus would actually arrive – hei gawd: the battle of Muzanga. Those corporately dressed guys and ladies that have been speaking through their nose to customers since morning? Don’t underestimate them o! Among them are boxers and wrestlers, potential WWE champions and Olympic gold medalists in boxing and wrestling. Once they spot the bus arriving, everybody primes themselves for the struggle ahead. Phones are held tightly in hand (pickpockets wear suits apparently, but that’s a story for another day), bags are worn properly so they don’t fall off, ties are stuffed in bags, cuff-links are removed, sleeves are rolled. Eyes dart and as the bus draws closer, the crowd moves closer to it, as if drawn by a special force of gravity the bus possesses. It’s even worse if the bus door is open because people take leaps of faith they’ve never taken in church or mosque before. There was once I saw an empty bus turn into my office street and did not stop once but somehow, by the time it got to the junction, it was full. And someone was hanging off the doorway too. Someone in a suit, suddenly giving conductors a run for their money.

If the driver has the foresight to keep his door closed, well, then you’d know that somewhere on these people’s CVs, opening all kinds of doors is also present. While the driver would be yelling for them to wait for him to come open the door himself, the more industrious suit and tie people are already attempting their own door-opening spells. One person would try the handle. Another person would slide open the window on the door and reach in to try opening it from inside. Meanwhile, a third would take the most direct route and try pulling the door off instead. The more creative ones would cut out the whole door nonsense, locate an open window, throw in their bags and dive in head-first. Then when the door finally opens – this is even more amusing because everyone would be trying to get in at the same time but no one would actually succeed for a while: so there’d be an empty bus with a crowd of people trying to get in without success like some sort of force field was preventing them. When one person finally gets half of his or her body in through the door, the frenzy doubles. I once witnessed one guy succeed in getting into the bus and was about to sit at the last space right beside the door. Before he could settle into the seat, someone pulled him out of the bus from outside and just as quickly as he fell out, someone else had taken his space and held on to the seat like it was bound for heaven lest he suffer the same fate as the previous near occupant.

Once, one lady got on a bus and dropped her bag to keep space for her friend/colleague who was clearly not up to the struggle. Of course, another lady fought her way onto the bus and sat on the bag before asking whose bag it was. The owner of the bag piped up, declaring the seat occupied and demanding the other lady vacates it as it belonged to her friend with the bag as evidence of that occupation. Without a word, the occupier removed the bag from under her, located the nearest window and flung it out, leaving the bag’s owner completely speechless and I, very amused.

On days like this, I just turn around, head back to the office, switch on the AC and use the office Wi-Fi to stream movies till 10 pm when the rush would have died down and I wouldn’t have to fight a second civil war to get home. No be me kill Jesus.

While INEC is still compiling and announcing the results of the elections, most Nigerians are focused only on the results of the presidential elections, forgetting that the national assembly results are just as important. Why? Because whichever party holds the majority in both houses and how much majority it has would determine a lot for the future of our country.

First off, the majority party in each house of assembly has a stronger chance if producing the house leaders, ie the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Asides that, having a minimum of 2/3rds of the house majority makes it easier for the majority party to get laws passed or get opposition laws struck down.

We have seen how the sour relationship between the executive and the legislature affected Nigeria over the past four years so we hope that whatever results we get from the HOA elections would make for a peaceful and harmonious relationship between the executive and the legislature.

Not just freedom - happiness too. People get married for a whole lot of reasons and may find out down the line that their reason for getting married is not enough to keep them happy or united as a couple so they both decide to go their separate ways. The media (not just in Nigeria) likes to paint all divorces as bitter affairs (and they often are, don't get me wrong) but that's not accurate. The fact is that when both parties realize that they'd rather not subject each other and their kids to a life of pain, discontent and unhappiness in the name of staying together till death does them part - the motto of lots of Nigerians - they decide instead to part amicably as friends and maintain a cordial relationship.

Well, that's the problem. There are a lot of Nigerian men and women who take advice like politicians - if you don't spell everything out in black and white, they use it as an excuse to behave badly then when you call them out for their bad behaviour, they blame you for not giving them complete advice.

And yes, as far as love, respect, communication and tolerance goes, men and women share equal responsibility in relationships and marriages. If one person does or has it more than the other, there WILL be problems.

Well, being the kind of partner a good woman would want is also a good advice for men, isn't it? It's not like I totally disagreed with what the guy said. It's just that all too often, women get blamed when things go wrong in a marriage especially here in Nigeria and I felt that without adding the balance that men also need to work on themselves to attract good spouses, some men could read that and have this sense of entitlement that it doesn't matter what they do or how they behave, that the woman is the one that should carry the burden of being the good person in the relationship/marriage.

My advice is for men planning on getting married about things that could lead to a failed marriage....
....ofcourse the man has his own share of responsibility and i mentioned a bit of it.....but i tell you....no matter how loving, kind, caring considerate and generally good you are when you marry the wrong partner (vice versa)..... those qualities would be useless......it is meant for a marriage where there is conscious commitment from both sides to make things work and accept responsibility.

Also children is good in a family, but having beautiful children whom you so much love would make a damaged marriage even more painful as those children may have to grow up in an environment that may not be healthy for there development especially where there are frequent ugly conflict between the spouse......its a bitter experience one should try to avoid if possible......and if you are in it already.....& if it is not life threatening yet,......well, you can work it out with your spouse with help from the right people...

NB:Just replying for clarification sake, am not a misogynist and i am not in anyway saying a man should not take/own up to his responsibilities, as a man's character most times triggers negative response from the wife......the focus of my comment was on what a young man could look for( or what could be a red flag). Thank you.

Thanks for the clarification. I just wanted a bit of balance in the whole equation. My worry was that some guys with terrible attitudes and behaviours would read that and think they don't have to improve on themselves and that whatever goes wrong in their marriage is the woman's fault, which is something we see play out all too often. But I get your point now

My advice is for MEN and this is based on my little experience.

Never marry a woman that does not or would not respect you. (including a woman with bad attitude and low morals). If you do YOU WILL REGRET IT....don't ever think you can manage it ( remember its forever).
The saying that "the 3 most important things men want in marriage is:
Respect, Good food & Good sex" is true, so scan well well to be certain you have the right partner.

Most women nag...but my brother nagging get levels....do everything humanly possible to avoid a woman with high potential of nagging....if you don't...YOU WILL HATE YOURSELF....As a man, if you are not patient (SURU) pls dont marry yet, until you find a way to develop yourself in that regard....its takes a patient man to be a good husband.....you will see many things, but you can't react to everything, else YOU CAN RUN MAD.....

It takes God and high level of luck to marry the right partner (man or woman)....you cannot use smartness alone or discerning spirit or anything....Marriage is like going to the market to buy a parcel wrapped in a black nylon, until get home that's when the nature of what you bought would begin to unravel its content in a slow release manner (good or bad).

It is my believe that for a woman to enjoy/own/control her marriage and her husband she needs to be submissive to her husband....(to people who may not agree) like i said...IT IS MY BELIEVE, it may not be your believe, don't crucify me for my believe.
To those planning to get married, i wish you GOOD LUCK in selecting the right parcel. -this advice is for men. Thank you.

If you guys know the people that stole from Benin city or enslaved some of our forefathers, find them and exact your revenge instead of using something completely unrelated to justify crime.

The major work in a project is not the ground breaking ceremonies. It takes a lot to get to the ceremonial photo-op (propaganda) stage.

Obasanjo's own contract with the Chinese was canceled by Yaradua. You people should learn to read and monitor Nigeria's development at all times.

Yaradua canceled all the major agreements Obasanjo negotiated then. Many of you even applauded him for that. It took a painstaking methodical efforts for the Jonathan's government to renegotiate the contracts.

Government is a continuum, past governments did their own parts and moved on.

If you people had not been trying to smear others with bogus claims about how your messiah is the best things to happen to Nigeria in 100 years, if he had just continued from where he met those projects and do his own bits, if you guys had not tried to demonize someone or people who put Nigeria on the road to prosperity in favour of someone is spreading poverty around and making you love it, no one would have tried to make any clarifications.

But as you can see, there's no single thing he or his government has been able to do which is not shrouded in controversy.

Interesting how you're complaining about hyping "messiahs" and demonizing other people while hyping your own messiah and demonizing someone else in the same post.
