Ralf is under pressure to deliver so, he is not best placed to give players like VDB a chance. He needs to win as many games as possible. He how quickly he binned his favored formation because the pressure was already mounting.

Carrick coached for just 2 games, not enough time for draw conclusions...

Ole on the other hand is the biggest culprit, man had the confidence of the board and a good percentage of the fan base to have eased VDB into the squad. I didn't mention playing four attackers, I just outlined a very likely scenario where we will have Cavani out injured and have to make do with Ronaldo, Rashford, Elanga (Still very young and shouldn't be made to shoulder too much responsibilities) and Sancho who is still finding his feet...

If Lingard leaves then we might need to promote someone from the academy or sign a new wing forward...

Elanga is quite young, we need not place too much weight on his shoulders...Cavani is injury prone now. That leaves us with Rashford, Ronaldo and a Sancho who is still finding his feet...

It has more to do with his uncommon ability to spot and play a pass with precision and not necessarily his role in the set up...Kante/Kovacic and Jorginho are mostly up against teams that play with 3 midfielders so, they already have their work cut out. It's funny to find folks here expecting them to provide assist for the forwards when you have 2 wing backs and 2 other inverted forwards or AMs playing behind the striker...

Also, note that Chelsea's starting formation was 3 - 4 - 3 (similar to their current system) and their preferred midfield in 2016/2017 was Kante and Matic with Cesc predominantly used as a sub. Stats shows Matic spent twice as much mins on the pitch compared to Cesc...So, Fabregas assist is down to his impressive passing and not his role on the pitch...

Kovacic plays a more advanced role just like kante, when you compare their stats to players who play the same roles for other top teams like Kdb, kroos, Bruno etc. Their numbers fall apart. Kovacic\kante are lacking in creativity.

In a 3 - 4 - 3 (2-1) or 5 - 2 - 3 the creative responsibility falls on the full backs and forwards I.e. AMs or inverted forwards depending on the tactic...

But it's important to note that the role of chance creation does not fall primarily on jorginho. That is the role of the forward players. The central and attacking midfielders.

I used to criticize Kovacic for being a poor passed of the ball for all his dribbling skills but not anymore, he has improved his passing and is now a better with raking long balls and defense splitting passes...Even Kante produces jaw dropping passes albeit not on a regular basis...

If I was asked to rate Chelsea midfielders based on their passing abilities, I'd rate Kovacic higher than Jorginho with Kante not far off Jorginho in 3rd...

NB: My position is based on the eye test...

Bruno alongside Fred and Dalot have raised their games...Bruno doesn't lose possession like he used to do under Ole, he is now helping us to dominate games by joining the midfield whilst still pushing up when the chance presents itself...

The players who will struggle to get back into the first team are Sancho and AWB...Telles has not cemented the LB slot however, I prefer him to Shaw for now however, he needs to chop into space with the ball as Larrid.e pointed out yesterday instead of hurriedly sending in a cross everytime...

In the long run, I hope we start scoring more just so other players like VDB can get game time.
