elampiro:De Bruyne from any position will still do well. When Manchester City attacks, you see Mendy on the left stretching the play, Aguero is always in the box, Sterling tucks in to add more bodies in the box, Bernardo Silva tucks in too to allow Walker the space to drive forward, De Bruyne moves toward the right wing waiting for a cut back so can whoop in those his devilish crosses. In front of the defence, David Silva and Gundogan are waiting to recycle possession and in midfield, you have the CBs who push forward to narrow the pitch. At Liverpool, Robertson and TAA occupy the wings when Liverpool attack allowing Mane and Salah to tuck in giving them more options in the box, Firmino drops to the edge of the box...Thats 5 players in that attacking sequence. To cover for the overlapping full backs, Henderson moves to the RW in any case of a counter, Van Dijk and Matip push up close to the midfield and Fabinho is stationed around the modified to provide cover with Wijnaldum ahead to recycle possession... At United when we attack, Rashford gets the ball, he starts running, when he looks for options, he can't pass to Martial because he is heavily marked, thus he turns and passes back to Young. Same thing happens when James has the ball, he begins to run but there's no overlapping full back or AMF in the same wavelength and with Martial heavily marked, he elects to go it alone until he is dispossessed or fouled. I have seen enough of our games where you'll find yourself screaming that Young and AWB should bomb forward but no (Young is even better). Pereira who should be very close to the attacks will be couple of yards behind thus we have to delay the play to allow them the chance to join the attack by which time the opposition has regrouped. McTominay has been trying of late but he arrives late and most times his shots ends up being blocked...Watch our games and you'll observe what I am trying to point out, as a midfielder and even defender, you progress with the movement of the ball, how will we be on the attack yet Maguire, Lindelof and in some cases Rojo will be seen very deep in our half of the pitch? In a normal scenario, Rashford and James shouldn't be the ones whooping in balls, that's the work of our fullbacks and our midfielders should be around the edge of the box or thereabout with the defenders close to the midfield especially when we are up against small teams. |
elampiro:I don't understand... |
Oasis007:Ole takes majority of the blame for persisting with those guys then you have the players themselves who are technically very limited. I am very critical of AWB, Fred, Maguire, Lindelof and Bailly because for the equivalent of the money we paid for them, City are playing fantastic football with De Bruyne, Walker, Laporte, Gundogan, B. Silva etc. Against Bournemouth, our defense was worth close to 200m but they all looked clueless... |
Oasis007:Why shouldn't we also blame AWB? You watch Meunier, TAA, Carvajal, Kimmich, Walker and the likes and you're satisfied with AWB? Abeg we are not a small club that will be celebrating tackles or defensive solidity against almighty Bournemouth. We should have them pinned back for the most part... Looking ahead, I don't know how we will cope against Sheffield United when we play them because their own defense is something else. |
Oasis007:We have a dysfunctional system first of all but then to your question, I have seen Martial and Rashford in the box only for the Cross to be over hit or hit straight to a defender. Against Bournemouth, Martial made a good run twice only for Pereira to over hit the attempted through pass. Replace Pereira with De Bruyne and Martial would have been in on goal. At City, for all of Sterling's impressive goalscoring stats, it will shock you to know the number of clear cut chances he misses but the chances keeps coming. It's the same with Aguero. When the supporting cast is bang average, any player will look bad. I am not in doubt that with Pogba, our chance creation stat will improve. |
Oasis007:Aguero and Jesus are not the tallest centre forwards out there so Pep rather have his full backs drill low crosses most of the time to good effect. When we mention Wan-Bissaka, it's not like he's the only bad player when it comes to attack, we already know Young is shit as with the others. For the money spent on Wan-Bissaka and Maguire, our midfield issues could have been solved... Talking about our strikers scoring, you just have to look at Lukaku all the way from West Brom to Everton. He scored goals in those teams because the coach had a system that played to his strength. See him at Inter scoring goals but why did he fail here? We don't have a progressive pattern of play, the supporting cast (midfield and defense) is just not up to par for the football that 2019 demands. I am certain if Martial goes to Liverpool or even Inter Milan he will score goals. Watch teams like Aston Villa, Sheffield United and the likes play and you'll see a game plan but not with us. Bournemouth threatened to score each time they went forward, their passing and movement was better. I seriously don't know what we do in training... |
afrodoc2:Spot on... |
Martial is lazy, yes but there's also Rashford who is not lazy but fed on scraps yesterday...Daniel James hardly ever gets into the opposition box so how do you expect them to score? The supply from the wings and the midfield is piss poor, I saw Pereira over hit a pass each time he attempted a through ball... Yesterday, Harry Wilson had at least 2 clear cut chances to score after they played through our midfield. Funny enough, Martial and Rashford never had such chances but we should blame them. At City, Aguero and Sterling will miss 2-3 chances but the chances will keep coming until they score same with Liverpool where Firmino is notorious for missing easy chances but then, they keep creating chances. Ole is clueless when it comes to setting up his teams to play in tight spaces and break down stubborn opposition, we won't come up against big teams everyday where his smash and grab approach will work... Right now, I am hoping Ed Woodward will sum up the courage to show him the door before it's too late. |
raumdeuter:Abeg easy with the lies, Mourinho used Duff at LB to devastating effect in his first reign at Chelsea. At Madrid, he used Marcelo when he was up against mid table teams and only used Coentrao when he was up against a formidable opposition because of his defensive qualities... At Inter, Zanetti and Maicon were a huge part of their attacking play... For those who saw Inter under Mou, what exactly is the difference between Maicon under Mou and Alves under Pep? Abi you want to talk about Zanetti? Mourinho has his faults but when he has had really good wing backs, he has used them to good effect. The only thing he demands which is not wrong is that his wing backs balance defense and attack so his team doesn't suffer. At Liverpool, only Robertson does it to near perfection, TAA is caught up field most time and only their mobile midfield is covering for him if not, we would have likened him to Trippeir at Spurs... |
ChristoBam:Sometimes, you read replies here and begin to wonder if we all watch the same Manchester United... Folks on the streets of Twitter are already calling out Wan-Bissaka and Maguire, others are on Pereira and Fred's case but here, some folks want Martial and Rashford to score out of nothing... See Jorginho's pass for Abraham's goal, which of Fred, McSauce or Andreas can execute such? I am not even going to dwell on City or Liverpool players anymore. Azpi who isn't very good in attack put in several tantalizing balls yesterday, Emerson didn't shy away when it came to bombing forward (One of his surging runs with the ball saw Kabasele booked) but at United, we should be satisfied with sliding tackles and compact shape as if we are Sheffield United... |
Lana1:Walker and Robertson don't agree with you. I really don't understand why it's difficult for some of us to understand a point that's clear, Robertson and TAA are the reason Mane and Salah can comfortably tuck in. At City, Mendy/Zichenko on the left as well as Walker/Cancelo on the right supply the width which makes it possible for Sterling and B. Silva to tuck in to devastating effect... At Chelsea, Lampard is grooming Reece James (in fact he should be starting if not that Azpi is the captain thus commands some respect) and on their left side, Emerson has been epic but no, we should expect Rashford, Martial and James to do the most against 6 defenders... We need wing backs who can balance the defensive and attacking side of the game just same way we need midfielders who are comfortable on the ball and can pass, until we have players with the aforementioned qualities, our attack will continue to struggle... |
odizeey:Sometimes, you just feel like aiming shots...If you can't see how Man City and Liverpool wing backs affect their attacking play then it's makes no sense jumping on a discussion you don't understand... |
larride:Larride, he is part of the problem, don't let those sliding tackles deceive you. Clubs have learnt to keep at least two players on James elsewhere, you have Martial battling with 2 CBs and Rashford closely marked...If you have a marauding wing back, it won't work as their runs forward will free up space for the forwards. I watched a clip sometime back where they were analyzing Messi's dribbling and goals, most of the time, defenders were caught in two minds whether to track the run of Alves, Alba or Suarez or commit to tackling Messi, that's what movement can do. Today, Brandon Williams a supposed Rookie came on and started driving our play forward with his runs. I reckon that Martial or Rashford will do better with a player like him dragging defenders with his forwards runs. Maguire is a mistake I saw coming, they were better alternatives across Europe... |
Look at the goal we conceded again, instead of Rashford to drop back and cover for Young who was dragged inside, he stood there waiting for the ball so we can counter attack...How do you play against Bournemouth and hope to counter, Bournemouth o! Not City...Ole is just a mediocre coach, he'll relegate us if he isn't shown the door ASAP. |
chrisley024:We are supposed to be on the front foot always except against City and Liverpool but we rather strengthen our defense rather than building a fearsome attack. Wan-Bissaka is just too limited to play for a big team, you have to look at Liverpool and City to know the standard. Even Chelsea know what's up, Reece James is getting ready to own the RB slot whilst Emerson is on the left. Those guys make it easier for the strikers as they stretch the opposition defense. Even if we have Ronaldo and Messi up front, they'll still be overcrowded because there's no supporting cast. |
See Robertson for Liverpool and Walker for Manchester City...We need to look for attacking fullbacks abeg... |
ChristoBam:I was not excited about the signing of Wan-Bissaka and Maguire too... Wan-Bissaka is a Crystal Palace level kind of defenders where defense is prioritized over attack and Maguire hasn't done anything of note to justify his price... |
Stupid coach said he wants a fluid front 3 but it's the back 4 that's fluid...Ole is a scam... Nobody should blame Martial, our forward play is as bad as I have seen in a long time. The midfielders can string a couple of passes together, our fullbacks are fullbacks in a time when people are talking about wing backs even our centre backs are clueless going forward. Before you argue, watch our play from the 83rd minute or thereabout when Williams came on, he pushed forward same as Young on the other side, even Maguire and Lindelof pushed up towards the centre midfield making the field compact thus we recovered possession faster. It's the only period we looked like scoring in the 2nd half but next match, that utterly brainless coach of ours will revert to playing rubbish... For the umpteen time, I'll take Dalot over Wan-Bissaka for a club like Manchester United, at a point we were on the attack but Wan-Bissaka opted to jug back to our half of the pitch. |
What's the sense in Lindelof and Maguire switching positions? We are losing but Wan-Bissaka is more concerned with making sliding tackles than bombing forward. Pereira is trash. |
partnerbizn5:Respect... |
I followed the arguments here and to be honest, both parties made sense... De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, McTonimay, Pogba, Fred/Pereira, Rashford, Martial, James... The team above should be able to compete with just about any team in the league bar City where a cautious approach should suffice...I am convinced that Rodgers, Klopp, Pep and Lampard will do better with our team... Jist look at Mason Mount, Tomori, Emerson and the likes and you'll see how far Lampard has gone to improve them. At City, Sterling, Walker have improved under Pep. At Liverpool, Wijnaldum, TAA, Robertson, Mane have improved under the management of Klopp... I am not saying Fred, McSauce, Shaw will automatically become Xavi, Kante and Marcelo under Pep or other elite managers but they'll definitely improve or be shown the door. That Ole thought they were good enough leaves all the blame on him... See how Lampard handled or is handling Pulisic at Chelsea, go back to how Klopp handled Fabinho when he just joined, check how Pep handled B. Silva and Mahrez when they joined City but here, Wan-Bissaka and Maguire must start, they don't even feel they're in a competition for a starting spot. The other day, Maguire was handed the captains armband when Romero was on the pitch...Why do we make players so comfortable? At City, Aguero for all he has done for that team needs to fight to keep his spot, Walker has to fight to keep his place, there's competition for places but here, Rashford will serve us trash after trash but still starts... Ole is clueless, he won't take us anywhere...We can't counter attack, we can't keep possession, we can't pack the bus, what exactly is our pattern of play? |
Roland17:Hehehe...God airpus o! |
nitrogen:Why didn't they compete for the UCL for the rest of their careers? It is obvious they either coached teams who couldn't qualify or they didn't have a long career (To have a long career, you need to win trophies regularly, most of them didn't win enough to have their respective clubs retain their services).. |
sleekdot:Who beasted the final? |
Roland17:All that matters is that you can see the road to the Europa league... |
raumdeuter:You're being picky with the points I have raised. We're the 5 new entrants into the team of any difference? |
sleekdot:Xavi didn't start that final. Messi wasn't fit and you know it, it won't take nothing from you if you admit to it. It was desperation that made Messi play that second leg... Again, the goalscorers against Juventus were all new players and that shows you how much of an improvement they were on those who started in that mauling... |
sleekdot:Bayern 4 vs 0 Barcelona...Starting 11 Valdes; Jordi Alba, Gerard Pique, Marc Bartra, Dani Alves; Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta; Alexis Sanchez, Lionel Messi, Pedro Rodriguez Barcelon 0 vs 3 Bayern... Starting lineup... Victor Valdés; Adriano, Gerard Piqué, Marc Bartra, Dani Alves; Alex Song, Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez; David Villa, Cesc Fábregas, Pedro Rodriguez. The Barcelona team that beat Juventus to win the treble...Starting line up... Marc-Andre ter Stegen; Jordi Alba, Javier Mascherano, Gerard Pique, Dani Alves; Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic, Andres Iniesta; Neymar, Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi Don't forget Messi wasn't fit and played just one leg just like Alba... Now check, Ter Stegen, Mascherano, Rakitic, Neymar and Suarez...That's 5 new players and a fit Messi... For more emphasis, Rakitic, Neymar and Suarez were the goal scorers...It shows the impact they had in the team... |
sleekdot:Why not post the both starting eleven so you see the flaw in your argument? |
sleekdot:Use this same excuse for the Barca team you guys thrashed 7 vs 0... |
Building winning teams after winning teams is not as easy as managing top players at their prime for 3-4 years afterwards, you go for a year long sabbatical to recharge... If Klopp wins the EPL this season, he'll most likely walk away knowing how difficult it will be to replicate that feat...Building title winning teams after another isn't an easy feat to replicate, it takes more than just touch line antics to keep the players motivated... |
sleekdot:After a season where they won the treble? |
