One important thing to ask your parents is if they have a fixed deposit account. Some parents keep huge amount in fixed deposit and when they die the banks inherit the money. |

bnsufeeanh: Size is 12ft by 10ft. It was constructed like yours exactly expect for the reinforcement part. It wasn't reinforced at the corners. It was just filleted.
If you'll be educating me, I think it's the tarpaulin pond you should detail me with. A concrete pond will take long time to complete and cost more. I'll so much appreciate OP.
Thank You so much. Very little peeps can do what you're doing
I am sorry about what happened to you, those pillars at the four edges are what will keep the ponds together. Leakages happen at the edges. They can loose those edges board it with iron rod and cast it, you won't experience leakages anymore. But if you decide to use tarpaulin ponds,it is OK. |

mamakendra: Pls @op, how are you draining the waste water from your pond? The waste water are going to an underground drainage. It is advisable to do the drainage while you are sinking your borehole, it is cheaper that way, I only gave them 20k for it. From these pics you will see how the outlets are linked to the drainage.

LargeBrown: 500k and I ve got space...tnx Since you have a space, assuming you have source of water and where to drain your water to, what you need now is like 2 tarpaulin ponds which will cost you N110,000, you can start with 1000 fishes,500 in each pond, 250,000 will be enough to feed them. You acquire more ponds and increase your stock as you grow in the business |

bnsufeeanh: Thanks a lot op. I stay around Agbado in Ogun state. I've not stocked yet because my concrete pond is leaking. Thinking of constructing a tarpaulin pond. I'll let you know when I do.
God bless you sir What size of ponds? How was it constructed that it is leaking?Give me details |

favouryemmy: @Op, well done. I will like to know how you took care of these: 1. What steps did you take to prevent water leaking or absorbing through the concrete walls? 2. Where are you draining the water to? 3. Do you have any plans for recycling the water?
These questions are germane to environmental impact of this project.
Expecting your response. 1. We did two layers of plastering with thick cement and sand; also after setting two blocks we casted the hollow blocks to make it firm. We put iron rods at the four edges and cast it,that will prevent water from attacking the edges to avoid cracks. 2. If you look at some of the pics I showed the under ground drainage, while sinking my borehole I drill a hole also and all the waste water are channeled there. 3. No plans for recycling of the water |
You are right, starting fish farm or poultry requires good capital, it is difficult to start small. I started this project since 2014, aside cost of the land, just for fencing, building of a bed sitter farm house, the pond, borehole, gate and source of electricity,I have spent nothing less than 2.5M.
A friend told me he has 300k to start but I told him it will not be enough, he needs borehole which will cost 200k, two ponds will cost N80,000 so how much will be left to raise the fishes. The cheapest way to start is to look for a pond to rent so the little money you have will be used for stocking and feeding. |
This question is not directed to OP alone but also to other fish farmers in the house.
Don't allow those market women to deceive you, fishes are scarce now in the market, a lot of people left the business due to high cost of feeds, and it translated to boom time for those that remained in the business. Where is your location and what quantity do you have for harvest? If you have from 0.8- 1kg you can sell from 600- 650 per kg. If your fishes are 1kg to 1.3kg you sell at 700.Melange sell for 450 to 500. |

You did not state if you have borehole already in your compound! Another major thing is where to drain the waste water to. Assuming you have those two in place.
You can get 2 Tarpaulin ponds of 10ft by 8ft for N40,000 each, the 2 will be N80,000.
You can stock 500 post fingerlings each costing N15 ....N7500
you can use the balance to feed them to table size(1kg).You can add any little amount to it if it is not enough.
After 4 months if you are able to get a total of say 450kg and you sell at N650 per kg you get N292500. The more you stock the more your profit. |
It is wrong for you to say concrete pond is old school, concrete and earthen ponds are standards as regards fish farming. Tarpaulin ponds wear out in a short period of time. |

Pillars were erected at the 4 edges were the water will exert pressure. At the back of each walls outside a slant pillar was done to serve as a wedge to support against water pressure.

adexgii: this is a nice project but I doubt if the pound will last before leaking, I know of a better way with lesser cost and ur pound will not leak Nothing last forever. If you have a better way with less cost of constructing the pond you can start a thread and educate us about it. |
Yes. i use dead chickens in my farm (the dead carcass are roasted whole to remove some feathers) and they are feed to the fish in concrete ponds whole and not just their intestines only. the water is drained every week and the leftover bones ( of chickens ) are scooped out
Hatchery waste are the eggs that refused to hatch into day old chicks at the end of incubation period in the hatchery. it is very cheap especially in areas where there are large concentration of hatchery. its been used in so many farms as good source of protein instead of wasting the product.. Am sure when given to fishes in concrete ponds they'll metabolise it well into their system.[/quote
Thanks man, I will make more inquiries about the hatchery waste. |

Dramadiddy: how many ponds will 300k get me if I use tarpaulin and how many ponds will I get if I use concrete.. which is easier to operate? tarpaulin or concrete? Presently it cost like 38k to sew a 12ft by 10ft tarpaulin pond, with additional 17k for the iron stand and the piping work, which is a total of N55,000. N300,000 can get you like 6 tarpaulin ponds but it can only give you 3 concrete ponds. Tarpaulin ponds will still serve same purpose |

DavSagacity: Nice one bro. U are doing a great Job man... However, U can also source hatchery waste for ur stock when they are about 2months old . u cook the hatchery waste until it congeal . the fish will eat bother the shell (calcium) and the chicken. It is relatively cheap compared to pelleted feed and it boast the growth of fish fast. I have not heard of hatchery waste before, what make up the hatchery waste?I do know of feeding fish with chicken intestine when they are like 3 months. Thanks for the insight |
