rakish: Pls what is the capital for starting this business? I always have a soft spot for fish farming. Good Job. The capital to start depends on what you have already. You need a land, borehole, a small house where the workers will stay, the cost of ponds depends on how many you want and the size. Factor all those and you know the capital you need. |

LargeBrown: ..like how much can kick start this venture bro...been lookin for a reliable source on wat it ll cost 2 start..thanks It depends on how big or small you intend to start. If you don't have much money and wants to start small, you can go for tarpaulin ponds rather than concrete. If you don't have a land but you have a space in your compound you can construct like 3 tarpaulin ponds and start from there. Give me an estimate of the funds you intend to start with and what you have already and I will tell you the cost. |

Skoopy: @OP: don't you think the blocks would absorb too much water and probably loose it's strength? Just asking. The blocks have no contact with the water, we did a first layer of plastering which was quite thick before the final plastering and smoothening. |

jinxet2000: Can we research food alternative that fish can eat which can be processed by the farmers instead of depending on the increase of feed? I think this is one way, things can get settling. Always have alternatives and smart ways to turnaround situation in your favor. The only alternative now is to use same local ingredients used in the foreign feeds to formulate your own feeds, that will reduce the cost on feeds. |

dboss444: I heard the price of fish feed for fingerlings has gone up and fish biz not profitable. pls is it true? It is true the price of fish feed has gone up, also the price of 1kg fish has increased from N500 to N650- N700, so the price of fish balance the increase in the cost of feed which means the biz is still profitable. You can also pelette your own feed in other to reduce cost spent on feeds. |

choliprime: bros,5bags for 4weeks to feed 500birds!!! haba not true! 500birds would eat 40-45bags in 4weeks. oga, for intensive broiler farming no one keeps birds for longer than 8 weeks. The grower mash we have around are for layers not broilers.Ideal feeding program for broilers usually involves feeding of super stater from day one to day 10-14, there after feed normal starter until 4 weeks then finisher can be fed until slaughter i.e 6-8 weeks. This type of feeding program involves providing feed, water and light round the clock even at night with only a few hours rest. @op you probably should have started with super starter . hope you have gotten a good drug and vaccination schedule and be sure to get an experienced vet to visit your farm as often as possible .Broiler business needs attention and prevention is always better and cheaper than cure. I don't want to argue with you, for you to say 500 broilers will eat 40-45 bags in the first 4 weeks, it is obvious to me you are not a farmer. |

Op, you don't seem serious in responding to questions.I have asked about the current price of 0.45 steptiles and long span sheet but you have refused to answer me. The project is in Benin so tell me the cost of transporting them here.
A friend of mine needs the price of stone coated roofing sheet. |
Agriculture › Re: Finally Started My Poultry Business by paulavon: 4:45am On Nov 30, 2016 |
Op, 500 broilers are too much for a start, they will be difficult for you to manage. I feel you made a big mistake in buying 40 bags of starter feed, they will not consume up to 5 bags in the first 4 weeks before you change to Growers mach.Growers mach are what you need more. I will advice you go back to where you bought the feeds from and change the starters to growers mach. Finisher will also be needed from the 10th week.
You should divide the house into 2 and sort the birds based on their sizes when they get to like 6th weeks |

anyiway: 1st month 1mm=50bags.
2nd month 3 & 4mm=50bags.
3rd month 4.5mm & 6mm=50bags.
4th month 9mm=50bags.
Someone gave me this estimate for feeding 5,000 fingerlings to maturity in four months. Your expert advice and estimate will be highly appreciated. My brother those quotations are well out of line, since you are new in the biz it is advisable you stock post fingerlings or Juveniles. Even if you stock Fingerlings,5000 fishes will not eat more than 1 bag of 1mm before they become post in less than 2 weeks,in another two weeks you buy like 3 bags of 1.8mm skretting feed that will take them to Juvenile. So you can see that from fingerlings to juvenile they won't eat more than 4 bags. They eat little at this stage. Don't waste money buying feeds in bulk,From Juvenile you introduce 2mm, just buy like 8 bags, you can buy more if it is not enough, they start eating much from the 3rd month when u start using 3mm to 8mm. You need to employ someone knowledgeable on fish farming to help you manage the biz. |
