Politics › Re: CBN Raises Interest Rate (MPR) To 22.75% by peleson1: 4:07pm On Feb 27, 2024 |
DeLaRue: It is a double edge sword.
As CBN rate rises, commercial banks will increase savings/fixed deposit rates, thereby attracting more savers who will be locked into 12 months or more term.
This will indirectly reduce the money available for spending and thus reduce patronage of many goods. As traders and manufacturers wait to exploit consumers with predatory prices, less and less people will buy their goods. As their warehouses pile up with unsold goods, they'll have to reduce prices, thus helping to reduce inflation.
Increasing interest rate will also mean the government can issue bonds at rates that will be attractive to foreign investors. More dollars will flow into the country.
The bad news is:
As Cbn increases interest rate, banks too will increase there lending rate with the likely result that:
1. More businesses that depend on bank loans will lay off staff or even close down
2. There will be fewer new investments- businesses can't survive on 33% - 35% loan rate
3. More pain for the economy generally.
Unfortunately, with the amount of money printed by Mr Buhari's government, the CBN will have to keep increasing interest rate in order to mop up excess liquidity and control inflation.
Managing a large economy in times of crises is a sophisticated game of chess. For every positive steps, there are multiple potential negative consequences. There are usually no easy solutions.
Unfortunately for politicians, the public want solutions NOW or they dabaru everything and even call for coup
The public is not interested in, nor do they understand economic theories. Cool analysis.. U guys up there , ur analyses are very apt.. Nigerians are smart. Good bless Nigeria and me especially |

Not just cocoa, but wheat n plants for flour , rice ,beans
There r abundance of land.
To be frank.
The notion that government has no business in doing business is lazy, nonsense n flaws .. In any great economy, governments are the greatest business ppl.
Government must set up these businesses ,run it n make sure they r profitable.

I am using this medium to call on the Rivers State governor , Gov. Fubara to as a matter of fact release blue print and good welfare packages for Rivers State people during this hardship.
His silence is too loud.
I am also calling on the Niger Delta governors to release welfare packages to cussion the effect of this unbearable hardship on our people because the hardship is man-made and it has shown that bad leadership n rigging and looting of public funds by them have consequences.
Gov. Sam olu of Lagos has released palliatives
Gov Dapo of Ogun has released a wonderful package
So what are the Niger Delta governors doing?
What are the South East governors waiting for?!!
It is also worthy to note that Gov Has before this time released some form of palliatives on transportation but that is just not even enough .
The buses are not much and people r not feeling it.
He should bring packages for health care for all.
Bursary for students in higher institution.
Human development packages and empowerment and emploent and grants ,(seed funds for businesses) to Rivers youth .
Care for elderly and pregnant women.
Create jobs for the Rivers people.
Have employment portal where 60% jobs in Rivers state from all companies are made available for Rivers people.
Others states should create similar things so their youth and unemployed won't be forced on other states like we have now.
States like rivers state has a high population of unemployed people from all over the country especially from neighboring states looking for jobs aggressively which the rivers people are mostly denied opportunities .
The governors are expected to do more |

Yampotatocarrot: Mine was increased few weeks back and I didn't feel bad about it at all... I understand that the price of things have increased, so for a landlord that is majorly dependent on his rents, where him wan see money take balance the increase in price of goods and services
It's not their fault... They don't have a special market where they buy things at a cheaper rate, so the increasing cost of things is also affecting them, hence the increase in rent It's only wickedness that will make cement manufacturing companies increase their prices at this time of hardship because all materials needed for cement production are gotten locally n the FG had a stakeholders meeting with them and u saw how the price was reset back. Those labdlords v businesses or work on places the get paid . Houses built over two years ago v no business with rent increase especially this period of hardship. People never see food chop n u dey increase rent with over 50% most times. It's pure wickedness and nothing more. FG, Governors must lookinyo all these wickedness. Politics › Re: Government At All Tiers Should Ban Rent Increase For Now by peleson1(op): 3:57pm On Feb 24, 2024 |
Hedonisco: I think it is quite heartless and unreasonable for rents to go up at this time, especially non-upscale residential apartments.
Owning a house built 20 years ago is not a business or vocation in itself, so you can't arbitrarily 'adjust' prices to reflect new galloping inflationary trends. Cost of utilities, security, maintenance, etc can go up to match the inflation, agreed. But the rent shouldn't rise astronomically.
I know of some houses where the annual rent of a single flat is nominally more than double the amount spent to acquire the land and build the entire house with its multiple blocks of flats years ago. I'm telling you. Heartlessness people everywhere. People are dying of hunger and u see house rents being increased daily. What's even going on in Nigeria?!! It's only in Nigeria u will see economic meltdown and u will see property n rent going up . Government should caution this greedy fellows |
