Terrorism is never something that is easily dealt with. Cut off one head and another pops out immediately to take it's place. Pledging allegiance to IS would not be enough to stop what is coming though. My only problem is that our borders are too porous. We should be doing more to cut off their arms supply and also trace where their funding is coming from. That way we will defeat them totally.

Honest advice
Guess you had no answers to the good questions I posed right?

The soldiers gaining territories from Boko Haram in 2015 were not in the Nigerian Army between 2010 and 2014 right? You see how STUPID you are now?

Do we now Have US seals and Marine Corps in the Nigerian Army in 2015 hence the sudden confidence and greater fighting prowess?

If youre educated and enlightened enough, you would have known sierra Leone and liberia that we intervened years back were fighting a CIVIL WAR, are we in a CIVIL WAR IN NIGERIA TOO?

You're as STUPID, DAFT AND LACK COMMONSENSE as they come.

The gallant nigerian army had the wherewithal to fight and destroy Boko Haram years ago if the insurgency was fought with genuine intentions and sincerity of purpose.

Some military commanders were smiling to the banks and the PDP was hoping that BH will be a good excuse to avoid going for elections if they sustained it.

boKo Haram is no match even for a single army division if there is sincerity by the government.

Buhari proved this during the maitasine scourge and the Chadian invasion.

Only idiots like you close your eye to the truth.

Can't believe the stupidity of sone commentaries I read on this thread.

THE QUESTION TO ASK IS WHY WE WAITED 5YEARS BEFORE WE ACTED?

Chadian Army cannot boast of a tenth of our armoury and a tenth of our military size and strength

What made the Nigerian Army which have recorded great victories against BH in the last 3 weeks seem so useless and cowardly in the fight against BH in the last 5years?

Why did GEJ need an election to act right? More lives and properties would have been saved of we did what we are doing now over 4years ago and some idiots are talking as if those losses doesn't matter.

Never knew dikwa and ngalamboru are cities in Chad not Nigeria for an idio.t to say Chad Army only liberated just 2 cities.

Our Army and our richness is enough to protect us if we had a sincere and focus commander in chief.

You are a FOOOL, guy. If not you would have known that this article by Yahoo news is only the latest of the well played and rehearsed negative narrative against Nigeria by these foreign journalists.

You would have known that the Chadian Army have only liberated just 2 towns- GamboruNgala and Dikwa- with the permission of the Nigerian authorities, with both towns near the border with Chad (GambaruNgsla is in fact just at the border between Nigeria and Chad and was even captured by the Chadian grow d troops after the Nigerian Airforce pounced that area). You may have known that most of the really heavy fighting and successes recorded so far (liberated of about 10 LOCAL GOVTS including the big towns like Baga, Montano, Marte, Madagali, Mafa, Gulak) and the virtual surrender of Gworza and Bama had/has been undertaken by Nigerian forces. You should have know that the main function of the other MNJF armies us to guard their borders, prevent BH fighters from gaining an escape route during fights or having safe havens in their territories.

More importantly, perhaps you would have known that this is history repeating itself again. Same way Nigerian Forces- Land, Air and Navy- fought most of the real battles in the Sierra Leone civil war in the 90s, and yet today the narrative and the history books credits the British for winning that war only cos the British Press went to overdrive with the role a small British battalion played at the end of the war after the war already almost won by the Nigerian and other West Africa peace keepers. If you had any sense and any iota of self respect you would very very vehemently resist this assault on the sensitivity of your OWN NATION. But here you are trying to play cheap politics with it.

SHAME ON YOU
If MADNESS is not an inherent trait in your family tree you wont be spewing the stupid thing you saying.

If your senses are intact. You wont be here talking as if the over 13,000 lives lost to BH in the last 5 year's doesn't matter.

If being crazy hasn't written a letter to you, you won't pretend as if the billions lost in houses, cars, shops and farmland and farmproduce to Boko Haram in the last 5 years can be overlooked and forgotten.

If you're not STUPID, you will be asking why the most stupid president in human history needed a seemingly election defeat to act properly against the menace of boko Haram.

The arms the military are using today to fight Boko Haram wasn't in the arms market in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 right?

The present crops of soldiers fighting and claiming back territories in 2015, are new recruits that were not in the NA since 2010-2014 when we felt helpless in fight against BH right?

Who didn't hear Interviews of army deserters and injured soldiers complaining about the rot and corruption endemic in the top military echelon.

How can Chadian Army be said to be better equipped than the Nigerian Army yet jonaTAN has spent 5trillion Naira on military defence in 4years and even took a loan of $1billion for the procurement of arms and ammunition.

I marvel at the number of troops mobilized for the fight against Boko Haram by the MNJTF from 8,700 to now proposing 10,000 additional forces and I ask myself, does it mean Nigeria has less than 30,000 Army personnel that we need less than 20,000 soldiers from neighbouring countries before we saw the victories over shekau and his murderous gangs.

it is clear the Nigerian government played politics and corruption to the detriment of the lives and properties of people of the North East.

PoliticsNiger, Chad Attack Boko Haram After IS Pledge Opens New Fronts -YAHOO NEWS by pendy79(op): 8:13pm On Mar 08, 2015
Niamey (AFP) - Niger and Chad on Sunday launched major ground and air strikes in northeast Nigeria against Boko Haram, after the militants formally pledged allegiance to the Islamic state group in Syria and Iraq.

The attacks, which follow a sustained build-up of troops in southern Niger, opens up a new front in regional efforts to wipe out the Islamist group, whose six-year insurgency has spread across borders.

"Very early this morning, troops from Niger and Chad began an offensive against Boko Haram... in the area of Bosso and near to Diffa," a Niger government source in Niamey told AFP on condition of anonymity.

More than 200 vehicles, some of them with machine guns, as well as tanks, ambulances, water tankers and transport trucks, were seen moving towards the border, radio station Anfani, based in Diffa, said.

Aircraft targeted Boko Haram positions on Saturday and early Sunday, it added, while a Diffa resident and aid worker said troops were seen heading to the border and heavy gunfire was heard.

The previously lacklustre counter-insurgency against Boko Haram has been given renewed vigour with the deployment of troops from Cameroon, Chad and Niger last month.

The armies have claimed a series of successes in rebel-held territory in recent weeks, as part of an operation to clear and control northeast Nigeria in time for general elections set for March 28.

Much of the focus has been on Chad's well-trained army, who have experience in tackling Al-Qaeda-linked extremists in Mali alongside French forces.

But Nigeria's military spokesman Chris Olukolade said the Nigerien and Chadian attacks were "complementary to the ongoing push against the terrorists" that it was heading.

"The mission of routing the terrorists from Nigeria's territory is being conducted from various fronts in and out of Nigeria and is achieving expected results so far," he said in a text message.

- Game changer? -

More than 13,000 people have been killed and some 1.5 million made homeless in the conflict since 2009 and the coalition is a reflection of regional fears about security, following cross-border attacks.

The African Union on Friday endorsed the creation of an additional regional force of up to 10,000 men to join the fight against Boko Haram.

Western powers have so far largely stayed out of direct involvement in the conflict, viewing it as an essentially "local" or regional problem.

But Boko Haram's pledge of allegiance to Islamic State in an audio message on Saturday night, could be a game-changer, according to analysts.

"Operating as an IS proxy could draw Western efforts against its operations, particularly from France, which already runs a multi-country anti-terrorist campaign in the west and central African region," said Ryan Cummings, from risk consultants Red24.

"Operation Barkhane's headquarters in the Chadian capital N'Djamena is just a stone's throw away from Boko Haram's area of operations in northeast Nigeria," he added.

- Increasing links -

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau described the formal pledge of allegiance to IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as a religious duty and said it would "enrage the enemy of Allah".

In doing so the Nigerian militants join extremists from Libya to Pakistan who have previously done the same, as IS group looks to expand its reach.

There have been growing indications that Boko Haram was looking to formally align itself, starting last year when Shekau declared the captured town of Gwoza, in Borno state, part of a caliphate.

That followed a similar declaration by Baghdadi while both groups have captured swathes of territory.

In recent weeks, previously poorly produced Boko Haram videos took on the look and feel of more polished IS propaganda and were posted directly online, guaranteeing a wider audience.

IS was also reported to have received pledges of allegiance from militants in Nigeria.

Shekau may have attempted to tone down his violent rhetoric and improve Boko Haram's public image among the wider jihadi movement but indiscriminate attacks have continued against civilian "soft" targets.

On Saturday, at least 58 people were killed in three bomb blasts in the Borno state capital, Maiduguri, in a further example that the threat has far from been contained as elections approach.

Experts said the pledge of allegiance to IS, which is also being forced on the defensive in Iraq, could be a result of the military pressure.

"This might be a way to send a message to the troops, to strengthen morale or attract more followers, particularly in Boko Haram's case," said Yan St-Pierre, a counter-terrorism expert at the Modern Security Consulting Group in Berlin.

St-Pierre suggested the pledge was linked to IS inroads in Libya, from where Boko Haram has been said to receive arms and ammunition via smuggling routes in the Sahel region.

"Most of the contact Boko Haram groups or factions have had with ISIS have been along that axis, and Sudan," he added.

some hawks in the Military and the political ruling elites colluded and closed their eye when they had the opportunity to nip this insurgency in the bud.

The military elites and government contractors saw the insurgency as an end to a means and saw an opportunity to continuous line their pockets with lucrative arms purchase contracts which were never executed and the Political ruling class saw the insurgency as an opportunity to keep its hold on power b using the insurgency to defame the opposition and thus kill two birds with a single stone.

"So far Cameroon has been relatively successful in repelling Boko attacks, despite having a far smaller army than Nigeria, which has been criticised for not pulling its weight."

There is no one who can reasonably say Nigeria on its own could not uproot the insurgents all these years but the fact they were people exploiting it for their own selfish ends made the group seem magical and invisible.

Boko Haram wAS never a group in the mould of ISIS or Al-Qaeda but Government and the military top echelons who had conflicts of interest enable the group to grow into a MORE ORGANISED TERROR group

#neveragain will Nigeria delegates its internal territorial issues to its neighbours
#neveragain will Nigeria have a president who raises personal ambition over national security and citizens safety
#neveragain will the world be worried about Nigeria and terrorism, WE will rise from the ashes of the nightmare of the PDP in 16years and reach the goals and dreams of our founding father.

Nigeria will be great again and I can feel it.

THE CHANGE STARTS WITH ME AND YOU!!!!
PoliticsBoko Haram Crisis: How Have Nigeria's Militants Become So Strong? BBC NEWS by pendy79(op):
Nigeria's militant Islamist group Boko Haram is waging the most brutal insurgency in Africa. It has seized vast amounts of territory, threatening Nigeria's territorial integrity and opening a new frontier by targeting neighbouring Cameroon.

Officials estimate that some three million people are affected by the humanitarian crisis caused by the five-year insurgency in the north-east.

Why are the militants so lethal?

The group is said to be split into numerous factions, which operate largely autonomously across northern and central Nigeria.

The International Crisis Group (ICG) think-tank estimates there are six of them - the most organised and ruthless one is in Borno state, where Boko Haram has captured large swathes of territory.

It first sends hundreds of foot-soldiers into a town or village. Often overwhelmed due to inadequate supplies, the Nigerian army flees, paving the way for elite militant fighters to enter and conquer the territory.

This is a remarkable change in its fortunes. Soon after Boko Haram launched its insurrection in 2009, Nigeria's security forces declared victory over the group after killing thousands of its members - including its founder - during an operation in the city of Maiduguri.

Some survivors fled to Algeria, Somalia - and possibly Afghanistan - for military training. Today the group is increasingly brutal in its modus operandi
, losing the support, some analysts say, of many local Muslims who once saw it as offering an alternative to the corrupt ruling elite.

How does it recruit fighters?

Increasingly through conscription - villagers are forced to join en masse or risk being slaughtered. It is also relying on criminals and thugs, "paying them for attacks, sometimes with a share of the spoils", according to the ICG.

With ethnic loyalties strong in Nigeria, most Boko Haram fighters are Kanuri
- the ethnic group to which the group's leader Abubuakar Shekau belongs - suggesting that he has influence over some traditional rulers in north-eastern Nigeria.

While it is unclear how many fighters Boko Haram has, UK-based finance and security analyst Tom Keatinge puts the number at more than 9,000.

Where does it get its money from?

When Boko Haram raids towns, it often loots banks. In 2012, the Nigerian military accused Boko Haram of extorting money from businessmen, politicians and government officials, and threatening them with abduction if they fail to pay up.

A poster displayed along the road shows photograph of Imam Abubakar Shekau, leader of the militant Islamist group Boko Haram, declared wanted by the Nigerian military - Maiduguri, Nigeria, 1 May 2013
Some US officials estimate that the group is paid as much as $1m (£660,000) for the release of a wealthy Nigerian, Mr Keatinge says.

With foreigners, the amount is much higher - Boko Haram was paid $3m ransom for the release of a French family of seven seized in northern Cameroon in February 2013, according to a Nigerian government document seen by Reuters news agency at the time.

With these sources of funding, Mr Keatinge estimates that Boko Haram's annual net income is $10m. Nigerian researcher Kyari Mohammed believes the group is running a low-cost insurgency, as it is made up mostly of young people from rural areas.

How does it arm itself?

Boko Haram has overrun many police stations and military bases in Nigeria, giving it a huge arsenal - including armoured personnel carriers, pickup trucks, rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles. And, according to the ICG, it has forged ties with arms smugglers in the lawless parts of the vast Sahel region.

Some of its weapons are suspected to have come from Libya, where arms depots were looted when Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's regime was overthrown in 2011.

However, most of Boko Haram's bombs are relatively crude, made from local materials that are easy and cheap to obtain, the ICG says.

Some of its bomb-makers, according to Nigeria-based security analyst Bawa Abdullahi Wase, are local university graduates who joined the group in desperation, after failing to find jobs.

And it has recently raided cement factories, including one owned by the French company Lafarge, in search of dynamite for its explosive devices.

Can it be defeated?

The government declared a state of emergency in 2013 in the three north-eastern states worst-affected by the insurgency. The military also armed vigilante groups, vital in remote areas where the military presence is minimal.

Boko Haram was driven from Maiduguri and neighbouring villages and into the vast Sambisa forest along the border with Cameroon. But the sect responded with a new offensive in which - according to the Associated Press news agency - it has taken control of an area about the size of Belgium.

If Boko Haram succeeds in its territorial ambitions - seizing towns in Niger, Chad and Cameroon, as its leader has threatened - the conflict could take on a new international dimension. France is likely to become more directly involved in the conflict to protect its former colonies.

So far Cameroon has been relatively successful in repelling Boko attacks, despite having a far smaller army than Nigeria, which has been criticised for not pulling its weight.

Is Boko Haram linked to IS?

Mr Shekau praised Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in a video released last year, referring to him as "Oh caliph". He has also praised al-Qaeda's Ayman al-Zawahiri, the IS leader's rival for the loyalty of worldwide jihadists. However, Shekau has not pledged allegiance to either group.

Boko Haram's leader taken from a video released by the group in October 2014
While he often speaks in a mix of Hausa, Arabic and Kanuri, his most recent video - where he praised the Paris attacks - was entirely in Arabic, leading analysts to suggest the Nigerian sect is seeking international appeal.

Solid ties with global jihadi groups would give further momentum to Boko Haram's violent campaign.

But you need to understand that Boko Haram was never a genuine insurgency.

If you think logically about it you would understand that Nigeria is colluding with them and there is no way in a million years a rag tag group of militants can face off against the full force of Nigeria's military, not only for 6 years but gaining ground.

Our government has allowed itself to be so controlled by America that it would do anything its told including colluding with the killing of thousands of its citzens and allowing the break up of the country whilst deceiving its people.

Then when you ever got the impression that our government has unleashed the full force of its military on this insurgency.

Do you know that we are talking about the same great Nigerian military that was able to intervene simultaneously in two regional civil wars (not mere insurgencies) and bring them to an end within months.
Some of your utterances are speculative and conjectures, America seems not in.the book of happening around the north east. Is chad colluding with the leadership of Nigeria to use the BH insurgency for monetary and political gains? I think so too and won't rule that out we all know Alimodu sheriff and idris Deby are mutual allies and biz associates.

I think the only culpability in.the whole scenario was the use of the insurgency to rob the country.and also.use it to prevent election.

Let's keep fingers crossed, Britain just said yesterday that if it reveal what it found out about the chibok girls it will affect diplomatic ties with the government.

I knew there is something more than ordinary about BH but whatever it is God will reveal it in.due.time. kabiru sokoto and Abu qaqa were captured by the nigerian government did we hear any spectacular revelation.from them? Ogwuche is in the custody of DSS, how come.we have not heard any revelation from him if he was as deadly as we were made to understand. Lol. Alright. Please do.

Regardless, your posts carry a lot of messages. I love your passion for the redemption we all seek for our great country that has been turned into a recluse of itself under this atrociously corrupt and inept regime.

With one supporter and one vote at a time, I think the race to glory will surely meet desirous end.

Thanks for all your effort. You are indeed appreciated.
I so pray too, redemption is on the way. I want to believe God spared the life of GMB in 2013 during the suicide bombing attack for a purpose and reason.

Thanks for the show of love, if nigeria is Better governed it will be for the betterment and enjoyment of us all.

GenBuhari:
Their weapon is that they are "Boko Haram"
That can't be true, the chadians were in Mali against al-Qaeda elements there too.

The money have found his way into private pocket, that's why it was so easy for the military to compromise during the certificate issue involving GMB because the government have something to hold the military hierarchy to ransom
You may have a point there. That could surely be true for a government that dwell in blackmail.

Remember Sule Lamido, remember Fani Kayode and you sure have a point.

Our neighbors really tried
They made the war against this guys successful
If the Chadians have not led the charge we would have been where we were 5years ago.

the question to ask is what kind of weapons are the Chadians soldiers using that the Nigerian Military Budget of 5trillion for 5years could not buy? yet we allow a ragtag soulless boys to hold the nation to ransom for years destroying lives and properties of innocent citizens

I wish to appreciate the Chadian forces for the help and assistance they have rendered in turning around the scourge of the MYTHICAL boko haram that the inefficient and corrupt leadership both Political and Military made us believe were ghosts that can't be curtailed for 5years running.

I pray Idris Derby does not start growing ideas about keeping those regained territories under Chadian flag and diplomatically returned them to Nigerian control after the end of the insurgency. Nigeria can't afford to go to war with Chad or any neighbour at the moment.

Nigerians need ask what kind of weapons did the Chadians brought into the fight against Boko Haram that our Military Budget of 5triilion Naira could not buy? we were made to assume and believe the ragtag boys who started with bow and arrow were invisible and hence could not be conquered but begged to lay down their arms.

Events in the last 3weeks have made it clear to all who reason and have commonsense that Boko Haram was a creation of a Nigerian Cabal that was using it to steal the commonwealth of the nation and also use it for Political and personal gain.

#NEVERAGAIN will Nigeria delegates its' internal problem to a neighbour to come help quell
#NEVERAGAIN will our military be made sacrificial lambs for the political ambition of any person.

Nigeria shall be GREAT again

I believe in CHANGE and I believe in BUHARI/OSINBAJO to drive that change.
