tunjilana: Of all the groups that actively fought the military regime, Nadeco was the most active.
Most of those killed or exiled during Abacja regime were not Igbos and even the Obasanjo you referenced was in jail for trying to "topple" the same military regime along with Yaradua, despite this, the average yoruba man at the time still didn't see Obasanjo as bn active enough in the struggle. The Igbos were known to be very very passive in that struggle with most of them citing the outcome of the June 12 riots affecting their business as the reason for being passive. All this village gist And lies should stop. It us the same way some of you will claim to have supported Abiola whereas 3 our of the 4 existing Igbo states at the time voted for Tofa!
As for Ekwueme, he properly Participated in the primaries and even got over 509 votes to lose in the primaries. In your naivety you believe they actually hand over presidential ticket to people? Especially that of a party with prospect like PDP? No they don't, politicians align around the sentiments that pays them the military at the time and Northern politicians knew that Abiola's people the yorubas needed to be compensated and those in PDP aligned behind the candidate they could trust which is OBJ, Ekwueme never backed out or dropped his ambition to support OBJ, he tested his popularity at the primaries and lost!
Now as for the yoruba race at that time , we didn't even give 2 about PDP. We knew our genuine heroes in the struggle, we knew the core figures that have bn there since the Awo days and we rallied round them in our own party AD and merged with northern friends who were sympathetic to the course in APP to produce a joint ticket...Olu Falae was our choice hence OBJ couldn't even win his local govt. So other Nigerians picked him against the will of Yorubas and made him president in a process that the Igbos equally have a shot and lost! You are just contradicting yourself up and down. At one breath you claim the presidential ticket of PDP wasn’t handed to Obasanjo, in another length you claim Yorubas and Northerners rallied round who they could trust. What does “rallying round” mean if not handing over? Was the rallying round out of Obasanjo’s high politicking? No! It was based purely on the sentiments of the need for Southwest to be compensated for Abiola. So I don’t understand why you are running around. And about NADECO, that’s the history of the group we are talking about, is it? I produced the link I referenced because we are talking about the origin of PDP and who had the higher stake of getting the party’s ticket at their convention. Ekwueme was the leader of the group that later became PDP and would have had the presidential ticket for of the party handed to him before the military stepped in. Ekwueme was betrayed for Obasanjo. It’s only comparable to a situation where Buhari would have stepped in before the APC convention and direct the party structure to work for Nwajiuba in 2022 when we knew that if the contest is left open, Tinubu will defeat Nwajiuba which is what eventually happened. |

tunjilana: Now I see how naive you are, there was no PDP before August 1998 when it was formed and elections happened few months later. So I don't know where u intend to see political capital and as for Obasanjo getting the ticket, that was simply because his friends from the North worked for him to win the primaries against the likes of Alex Ekwueme and Co, as shown below
OLUSEGUN OBASANJO 1,658 67.98% ALEX EKWUEME 521 21.36% DON ETIEBET 106 4.35% GRAHAM DOUGLAS 71 2.91% JIM NWOBODO 59 2.42% PHILIP ASIODU 12 0.49% FRANCIS ELLAH 12 0.49%
Whatever Obasanjo did to make his "other Nigerian friends" trust him enough to get their delegates to deliver for him is his business, despite not being loved or wanted in the South West. The result from the primaries shows ck3arly that the east still contested against him and only supported him during the general elections when the race was mainly a two-horse raise with both candidates coming from the southwest You dared to accuse me of naivety but you are the one who is actually pathetically naive and innocent of history. Do you know the group called G-18? Do you know the ones called G-34? They are a group of 18 like minded Nigerians that came together in 1997 and decided to dare the military regime of Sani Abacha of then. From 18 they later became 34. That group was led Dr Alex Ekwueme. As of this time, Obasanjo was still in prison and was not part of them. This Group of 34 (G-34) later became the founding fathers of PDP. And when they scheduled their convention in 1998, they were going to ‘hand’ the party’s presidential ticket to their leader, Alex Ekwueme, until the military mafia threw up the Obasanjo joker and used money to buy the ticket for Obasanjo in Jos. Remember that Obasanjo was an outsider to the group that founded the party. It appears Mrs Oluyinka was a placeholder. It is said that the new running mate is the Yerima of Auchi Kingdom. A master stroke from Akpata? The combination of Olumide Akpata and Asamah Kadiri brings together two exceptional legal minds who have made significant contributions to the Nigerian legal landscape. Olumide Akpata, a senior seasoned lawyer and former senior partner at Templars law firm, has established himself as a prominent figure in the legal profession. His expertise lies in Corporate and Commercial Law, where he has successfully handled complex legal matters for numerous clients.
Akpata's achievements go beyond his legal practice. In a historic moment, he became the first non-Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) to be elected as the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). This accomplishment showcased his leadership skills and the trust placed in him by his peers.
On the other hand, Asamah Kadiri serves as a Partner and Head of the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Practice Group at Jackson, Etti & Edu. His extensive experience and expertise in civil and commercial litigation, arbitration, mediation, negotiation, and regulatory compliance make him a true asset to the legal community. He has successfully represented clients in a wide range of legal disputes and has earned a reputation for his meticulous approach and dedication to achieving favorable outcomes for his clients.
The combination of Akpata as the Governorship candidate of the Labour Party and Kadiri as his deputy Governorship candidate is a game-changer for Edolites. It presents an opportunity for the people of Edo State to have leaders who possess both legal acumen and a deep understanding of governance. With their combined expertise, they can navigate the complex legal and administrative challenges that come with governing a state.
Furthermore, their complementary skills and experiences make them a formidable team. Akpata's background in corporate law and leadership as the NBA President brings a strategic and visionary perspective to the table. Meanwhile, Kadiri's extensive litigation experience equips him with the ability to handle legal disputes efficiently and effectively.
The people of Edo State can look forward to a promising future with Akpata and Kadiri at the helm. Their dedication to upholding the rule of law, promoting good governance, and fostering economic development will undoubtedly benefit the state and its citizens. The combination of their expertise and commitment to service makes them the ideal choice for Edolites who have long prayed for competent and capable leadership.
In summary, the pairing of Olumide Akpata and Asamah Kadiri represents a powerful combination of legal prowess and governance acumen. Their collective experience, leadership, and dedication to public service make them the best choice for the people of Edo State. With their guidance, the state can expect a brighter and more prosperous future.

FreeStuffsNG: It's likely another history revisionism.
Wikipedia is not credible, it is not even accepted as a reference and with the previous failed attempt to revise the history of the Yoruba who produced the present day Benin royalty and Yoruba Awori's prime place as the original and authentic owners of Isale Eko, Lagos, many people will doubt any account of 'history' from same place
That a descendant of same Obaseki could even be a Governor today shows that the family has not lost its place of significance in Benin or suffered from any wrong proclamation against him and his descendants. If Wikipedia is a historical revisionist site, then point to the site with a more authentic history. I had to post from a Wikipedia source because that’s the only one I could produce its link so it doesn’t seem like fake news. Aside from Wikipedia, the story of Obaseki’s action and the exile of Oba Ovonramwen is many other history books. So, your claim to historical revisionism is fallacious. About Godwin Obaseki becoming governor…. An insider whom I was having a conversation with recently, said that when Oshiomole presented Obaseki to the Oba Ewuare as his anointed candidate to succeed him, the Oba raised some concerns about Obaseki because of the history of his family but Oshiomole allayed the Oba’s fears and assured him Obaseki was trustworthy. But I think events since Obaseki became governor has shown that Oshiomole was wrong. It is claimed that Oba Ovonramwen cursed the Obaseki family and Godwin seems to have lived up to that curse by being a serial betrayer. Oshiomole trusted him but he betrayed him.
Wike trusted him and helped give him the PDP ticket but he betrayed Wike.
Shuaibu trusted him and joined him to fight Obaseki but he ended up betraying Obaseki and impeaching him.
Even the Oba that gave his blessings for him to succeed Oshiomole, he betrayed him and has been dragging the returned Benin Artifacts with the Oba which has led to litigations. Are these series of betrayals not too many to be just mere coincidences? Why always Obaseki? |
Politics › Agho Obaseki: Gov. Obaseki’s Ancestor Who Betrayed The Oba Of Benin In 1897. by Penguin2(op): 7:45pm On Apr 14, 2024 |
One of the problems we have this in country is that a lot of us do not know history. But I blame the government that expunged history from school curriculum. I made a post of Oba of Benin commissioning Olumide Akpata’s project and speculated on how Akpata might be candidate of the palace due to Governor Obaseki’s running battle with the Oba which has led to litigations. I made a point of how Governor Obaseki was following in the footsteps of his ancestor who betrayed the 35th Oba of Benin, Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi, in 1897 but some people were here challenging my assertion and I couldn’t help but shake my head at the level of ignorance of history that pervades even amongst those who claim to be educated and enlightened. Well, here I bring you the story of Agho Obaseki, the ancestor of Governor Obaseki who betrayed the then Oba of Benin to the British. To reward his betrayal, the British appointed him Prime Minister of Benin Kingdom after Oba Ovonramwen was exiled to Calabar in 1897 until 1914 when the son of Oba Ovonramwen, Oba Eweka 11, succeeded his father to the throne.Chief Agho Obaseki (died September 9, 1920) was a paramount Chief in the Benin Empire from 1898 to 1914, and then Iyase of Benin from 1914 until his death in 1920.[1] Background edit
Chief Agho Ogbedeoyo Obaseki of Benin, acted as the Prime Minister (Iyase) of Benin during the interregnum (1897-1914) as Head of Administration when Oba Ovonramwen was exiled.[2] Agho was the last of his father, Ogbeide's children. Ogbeide held the Bini Ine title under Oba Adolo. His family are descendants of Oba Ehengbuda, the Oba of Benin from 1578 to 1604. They migrated from Benin to Nsukwa. The first Obi of Nsukwa was a son of Oba Ehengbuda. Agho Obaseki's great great grand father, Prince Emokhua N’Obo was a native doctor and had a power tussle with his brother over the accession to the throne of their father, the Obi of Nsukwa and son of then Oba of Benin, Oba Ehengbuda. The Ine was the head of the palace society of Ibiwe and was responsible for raising the heir apparent and princes.[3] When he was about 25 years old, he got into some trouble in the village of Iguovinyoba, when he was entangled with a married woman. He thereafter left for Benin City to start a new life and there he met Crown Prince Idugbowa, later Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi who took Agho under protection and a friendship between the two men ensued. A young Agho became a trader for Prince Idugbowa.
Ovonramwen's ascendancy, Agho's trading growth, and award of the Obaseki title
When Prince Idgubowa became Oba Ovonramwen, Agho enjoyed a monopoly in trading palm oil and kernels for European products such as rum, matches, salt, clothing, silks, and other imports. Consequently, Agho brought great wealth to Oba Ovonramwen and himself and was rewarded as the head servant of the Benin royal house charged with settling minor household disputes. Oba Ovonramwen also rewarded Agho with his first wife, Etuohun and granted him the Obaseki title which was then incorporated into the Iweguae title holding society. Obaseki means "the Oba's favour is more valuable than mere success in trade", in 1889.[1] Oba Ovonramwen further enhanced Obaseki's status by gifting him one hundred slaves who had been war captives.
Fall of Benin and change in relationship with Ovonramwen
Obaseki played a crucial role in the events leading to the Fall of Benin from the Punitive Expedition of 1897.[4] He had organized a defence of Benin and accompanied Oba Ovonramwen during his escape from British rocket fire. Ovonramwen instructed Obaseki in April 1897 to survey Benin in the aftermath of the British bombardment. Obaseki was discovered by the British and was prevented from returning to Ovonramwen because the British saw him as useful for the new political order they were to impose. Alfred Turner, the British Resident, appointed Obaseki to the Council of Chiefs in September 1897.
Paramount Chief of Benin
Oba Ovonramwen stood trial in August for actions leading up to the Punitive Expedition, was found guilty by the British, deposed, and exiled to Calabar leading to a leadership vacuum that the British filled by making Obaseki the de facto head of the newly constituted Benin Native Council because of Obaseki's administrative skills and political acumen.
Iyase of Benin
Ovonramwen died on January 13, 1914, paving the way for Prince Aiguobasimwin (later Oba Eweka II) to become Oba. The British authorities, however, broke with tradition by appointing Obaseki, the Iyase of Benin (Chief Adviser to the Oba) much to the dismay of the newly installed Oba Eweka II. Consequently, a power struggle ensued between Oba Eweka II and Obaseki, the new Iyase of Benin. The Iyase overshadowed the Oba under the new British political dispensation and even according to the British who backed him, was 'certainly most dictatorial and arrogant in his behaviour'.[6]
New Yam Festival palaver
Obaseki embraced Christianity in 1917 and consequently stopped participating in palace rituals such as the opening of the New Yam Festival. Since yams could not be harvested without the Iyase participating, hard times followed and the British had to intervene. The Oba retorted that the festivities could not commence without the Iyase's participation and the Iyase, in turn, countered that his new religion compelled his non participation. Oba Eweka II was thus forced to open the festivities without the Iyase, humiliated by publicly apologizing to Obaseki, and in an act of reconciliation, the Oba gave his daughter to Obaseki in marriage. Obaseki now had as wives, the daughters of two successive Obas (first Ovonramwen who married off Orinmwiame[7] while in exile, and now Eweka II)
Death and legacy
Obaseki suffered from Pneumonia and died on September 9, 1920. His sons are Chief Aiyamekhue Jackson Obaseki (Esama of Benin Kingdom) a title held by the richest man in the Benin Empire, Chief Downson Obaseki (The Obaruyiedo Of Benin Kinddom), London Igbinovia Obaseki, Wilson Aigbedo, Agboifo, Humphrey, and Gaius Ikuobasoyenmwen who later became an Action Group chieftain. Accounts of his life and political career are contained in two books 'Obaseki of Benin (African Historical Biographies Series)[8]' and 'The Nemesis of Power: Agho Obaseki and Benin Politics 1897-1956[9]' authored by Nigerian historian Philip Igbafe. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agho_Obaseki |

Does that make you culpable of slave trade? His name was Oba Ovonranmwen Nogbaisi. He was exiled in 1897 to Calabar. Details of what led to his being exiled shows that the ancestor of Obaseki was the one that betrayed the Oba and the kingdom then. The Ancestor of Obaseki that betrayed the Oba was Agho Obaseki and the British made him the Prime Minister of Benin Kingdom after Oba Ovonramwen was exiled. Ask questions if you are from Benin. Lance008: To be honest I see no reason why Pdp Dey fight this man If you know u have done well why afraid of LP Pdp don steal all their important people with position jus few months to go You know I didn’t know Obaseki was fighting the Oba of Benin until I met a man from Edo about a week ago. The man is from Edo North, I think Etsako, but he told me the Oba will not support whoever Obaseki presents because of the squabble between them; to the extent some Benin sons used to come from abroad to attend the court sitting of the case Obaseki has with the Oba in court. Now, it seems the Oba has tacitly chosen Akpata as his own candidate. And should the Benin people of Edo South give him bloc vote, Akpata would have one leg in the government house. I wonder why Obaseki would fight the Oba. And this man from Edo told me that Obaseki’s ancestor was behind the banishment of the Oba of Benin during the Colonial era I guess. He said the current Oba was against Obaseki’s candidacy when Oshiomole presented him to the Oba but Oshiomole assured the Oba that Obaseki would not be like his fathers but it seems Oshiomole was wrong. Things seem to be aligning for Akpata. |

garfield1: Tbh,the handwriting on the wall shows that even if it comes to rigging, they will rig out pdp Even if things come down to rigging, the only place APC has even the closest capacity of rigging is in Edo North. But even in that Edo North, it would be restricted to just Etsako axis because PDP is strong in Owan and now in Akoko Edo with the Deputy Governor now from there. How can you rig in the Deputy Governor’s LGA with all the men he would be controlling now? Now, even in the Etsako axis, remember APC is going up against a PDP with structure backed by a sitting governor. You really think you can rig against that structure? If there’s anyone that would rig Edo election, it would be Obaseki. Remember the FG was backing the SDP candidate in the last Kogi election but couldn’t deliver him. APC would be living in fool’s paradise to think they’d outrig Obaseki, an incumbent governor. |

Anyone who’s a keen political follower, watcher and analyst in Nigeria, would agree that the Oba accepting to attend this project inauguration in person in this election period simply echoes endorsement. The Edo governorship election is getting more and more interesting and unpredictable every day. The road to Osadabey Avenue might be as smooth for Asue Ighodalo as we previously thought. Yesterday, 13 April 2024 was a truly momentous occasion as HRM Omo N'Oba N'Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, CFR, the Grand Patron of the Benin Club 1931, inaugurated the Senator Olu Akpata Memorial Clinic at the prestigious Benin Club 1931 named after Senator (Chief) Emmanuel Idahosa Oluwafemi Akpata, more popularly known as Senator Olu Akpata, the first indigenous President of Benin Club 1931.
When my father, Dr. Henry Omorogieva Akpata lost his father, Chief Johnson Ogunleye Akpata in 1946, Senator Olu Akpata took it upon himself to step in and serve ‘in loco parentis’ as a father figure for the young Henry Omorogieva and his siblings. This role, he performed creditably while also playing a significant role in the emergence of my dad as a successful medical practitioner.
It is, therefore, an immense honour to bring this vision to life and create a lasting healthcare facility in tribute to my beloved uncle, Senator Olu Akpata. The new clinic bearing his name will provide essential healthcare for club members and residents and thereby ensure that Senator Olu Akpata's legacy of dedication to community upliftment lives on. The Benin Club 1931 holds such profound significance not just to my family but also to my family but also the people of Edo State, embodying our resilient history and fostering unity. With the Senator Olu Akpata Memorial Clinic, we can now extend its positive impact through compassionate care that will touch countless lives for years to come. Olumide Akpata
