@Hisp99 If they cannot even do a 3-month forecast, then why do you believe all the financial projections in the prospectus? I am sure it takes less than 3 months or so from the date the offer closes to know how much was raised. So in the space of 3-months, things have suddenly changed dramatically? This statement is at the root of an issue that drew my attention to nairaland. Which is how much information coming from the NSE and its companies is credible (Forums / Business / Re: Be Careful About Buying These Banks Stocks!). You cant help the feeling you get sometimes that you are living in a fool's paradise. A determined CEO will present to regulators what they want to hear so he can have his way. It is hard to blame them because going to the market for yearly PO takes something away from corporate image and credibility. @Invisible
Has everyone gone on vacation here? Maybe to enjoy their NSE loot Please remember to post your secrets of the trade (tricks of the trade) for us to digest, I know you people have developed new tricks for 2008
Your knowledgeable posts have made you very visible on this thread. Perhaps you want to consider a name change. It may be disappointing that nobody is talking about specific stocks. Unfortunately all the gurus appear to have gone on leave. Many are even complaining of losing advantage upon disclosure which makes things very different for seekers like us. But there are other ways you can benefit from discourse like this. I give you example this statement by Hispy99 from far away US There is actually a law that prevents companies from absorbing more than 25% oversubscription, the SEC was just not enforcing it in the past.. I have on account of this chosen or at least considerd to backpedal on what I planned to be a large PO purchase (its ended but I understand brokers have 2 weeks to cross the ts). Respect. |
It is a pergogative of the SEC and it is designed to protect investors. If a company comes to the market claiming to need only N100billion and raises N1 trillion should the company be allowed to keep the excess funds? Remember that the company's plans and projections as stated in the prospectus only accounted for N100 billion. Furthermore, if the company really did a great job forecasting, then it should only ask for how much it needs (in this case N100 billion), any amount above this was not budgted for.Absolutely. I agree with you. But the company (banks in this case) can tell SEC that despite these projections we have, on account of recent growth and other favorable market indices etc etc we will be able to accommodate all or part of this over subscription as Intercontinental and more recently Oceanic bank did. So it comes down to whether the bank is willing and has sufficient capacity and therefore able to persuade SEC or is not willing. |
Sometimes you think you've figured it out. You know how the system works. But our system is proper abracadabra. The more you look the less you see. But I am loving it. |
So they are now putting a cap on shareholder's funds. Isnt that a prerogative of the Bank. |
I want to be educated. Apart from the recent embarrassment from First bank how many banks lately returned money (for shares legitimately purchased) on account of over subscription? I dont think generally banks would like to return money so they can come to the market every other year for PO. |
@Naijadr A million naira is pea nut to Zenith. They will accommodate it easily. I think they will take by far more. They need the money. If you have Jim Ovia kind of appetite you will find a way. |
@arsenal4va Visit this website. You will get it there. http://www.nigeriansecurities.com/ Thereafter you can go to church. |
@Princesege What happened to all our investments in your defunct MLM scheme? I hope you have paid back all your depositors. Hey I am only joking. In truth didnt know a company like that existed or that name had been so smeared. Looked at differently the name serves as a useful reminder of what could happen in this thing we do when you let guards down. So you see am a different person. My full name is Pennywise pound foolish, contemporary of William Shakespeare (that bookish fellow). The point I was trying to make is this-If you opt for PO and you get 100% in one year that is a hell of a good deal because you can easily accommodate the 31% par annum cost of fund. But short term trades like 3-6 months will bring the net cost of funds down to 13%-18% and you can make a good profit provided the volume is good. It is this same volume that will kill the person (not my friend Princesege) if things go wrong. Now you are beginning to make me sound like a 'guru'. Talking about taking loans generally to buy shares. This is a worldwide practice that is gradually catching on in Niger-no slacking Although I must say I felt slighted and infact offended when on asking for my share certificate a customer service officer asked me did you use loan to buy it, as if it mattered! It is true people's goals, circumstance and risk profile do differ as has been elaborated previously but taking loans from Nigerian banks should be a no no. Must be damn cold in London at the moment. I love the cold. But just cant accept or get used to dusk beginning at 4pm. |
@Princesege Are you considering taking loan in Nigeria for the purpose of stock trading?Am not a financial expert (not by a long shot) but I do know how to make money .If you have plans for a 3-6 month activity on the floor that means you will be reducing interest payable by half to a quarter ie 11.5-6% which translates to 18% or 13% in cost of funds as the case may be. This appears absolutely achievable judging by recent events (1-3yrs). Many POs turn up 100% in 1 yr if you chose to go that way. For the margin to be worth while, you need to have very good volume and a strong heart. If things don't turn out well, volume could prove lethal. |
I recieved in my office this afternoon a very welcome cheque of 110k for a dividend that was declared in June 2007. It was in fact dated 29/06/07 and the dispatch envelope dated 10/12/07- a good 6 months before it was sent. Same company just declared another dividend and who knows when or if I will ever get a cheque. Some of these operators just dont realize that things are changing and this errant behaviour is neither tolerable nor acceptable. Regulator should sit up. You dont collect all that commission and go to sleep. |
@ckenneth I do not think the observation I am going to make now will have any effect on the share price of oceanic bank, but I must state here that their service delivery is very poor. They have sent their workers out to source for deposit. Current customers dont matter to them. |
@aktopgun Congratulations to you Bro. Combining newborn parenting with the usually rigorous demand of a UK job. Never easy.abi you get househelp? But no doubt will be the most memorable. |
@Seun Greater forum, great people |
@all This thread has no doubt become the single most important resource on the NSE. My brother called me today asking precisely the same questions about the NSE that have been addressed on this forum. Of course all I did was send him the link.Great forum greater people. Perhaps the single most important contribution I have seen yet is from fatherof2. It is the concept of picking specific stocks on monday and selling on thursday or friday to make 25%. This concept that I will call the Fatherof2 factor of the NSE, immediately obnoxious, detestable and entirely against the idea of a stock exchange was not devised but revealed to all by our contributor. There is no doubt that a lot of people have made billions from the system using this ingenious tactic. We hope regulators are observing this trend (if they are not part of this awoof strategy). Right now all I can see is a beautiful NSE screaming at investors to line-up behind with her rear exposed. Wanajo alluded to inherent weaknesses in the system and a potentially reduced yield with improved regulation. I dont believe so. Ours is an emerging market. If you combine this with proper regulation this will inspire confidence, growth and enhanced returns. @ Seun Stock market in Nigeria today is a hot topic. And this is a red hot thread on the issue.Surprisingly it doesn't get a mention on the homepage of nairaland. Most people dont even know there is so much action going on in the back yard |
@ ALL U NOT ON BOARD INTERCONTINENTAL TRAIN IS ON THE MOVE. WHEN ITS GONE, ITS GONE. AND YOU WILL FEEL PAIN. |
@Pumping, For sharing this your all important tool, you are appreciated. |
@Geees Summarily, I say have the following sectors in your portfolio. Well said. PHB is a good stock but you eye it for the wrong reason. That Yar Adua is holding lots of its shares is well known but I would say that is more of a negative trait. This bank has been doing well long before he became president. The Prof who taught Erastus how to get Intercontinental right at the LBS should be able to do something for his bank. I can say this calculation cost me 150k sometime in 2003 when everybody knew SGBN was going down but I didn't because I knew the backers had no problem winning the election. Eventually the night mauraders became king but that only hastened the demise of this bank. Political (read Government) connection of any kind is bad news in Nigeria. Ask Transcorp share holders. |
@mee25
Please is there any body in the house that has any experience with Meristem as a broker? I am about opening an account with them. Please lets share.

The last time I looked(which was this morning) this company was not listed on the current list of registered stock brokers with the SEC. Meristem registrars however is listed. http://www.sec.gov.ng/brokerdealers.htm |
@ Allcorrect You know the guy owns cellcom and i sense he might just be putting it up for sale to Zenith or the bank might just buy someting real good. Hmmn. Something to think about |
@Fatherof2 I hope you let us know when you become father of 3 so forum members can arrange a cyber get together. [Sorry people,my internet link has been down.So i've been out for a while.I'm trying to get a new VSAT link in my residence so i can be on full blast.quote] I am linked to an ISP in my office via wifi. I intend to take this home and then hook up with VSAT. Please let me know what it takes when you get hooked up. Having huge plans for Bank PHB. I understand Zenith is coming at 38.90. Too expensive. Jim Ovia can shove it up his rear end. |
@BEULAH I can imagine your frustration. While considering assurances from Wanajo pick up the phone and try to talk. If they bulshit you lay your options on the table take immediate steps for reddress. Customer service of this kind usually signal an unhealthy company. Even if the company is thriving and it cannot handle customer relations effectively, why should I trust it with my money. I had a very high opinion of this company until now. |
We will all be deluding ourselves, folks if we think sharp practices dont go on in the NSE. Asking for proof is like asking why is the sky blue.I believe loophole exploitation and gross illegalities are going on on a monumental scale and it is only a matter of time before we have our first stock market crash. And it will take a couple of crashes before the regulators can get it right. Now most EFCC guys and guys from the special fraud unit of the NPF cant even identify stock market market fraud when they see one. But this is not going to stop me from buying. Someone drowned in the village stream is not a reason you stop drinking water. I think the best attitude is to diversify as much as possible and be very ready. Ultimately the stock market has come to stay. Even our dumb leaders recognize that you cant grow a modern economy on guguru and ekpa. $40B came into the country within the first 8 mths of this year compared to $10B last year and only a fraction of this is oil money. Confidence in the Nigerian stock market is growing daily as people are reaping exponential gains. We need to have a dedicated anti fraud unit that will work in tandem with special courts of the exchange. These courts will have a fixed maximum lenght of time within which to adjudicate. The NSE is too important to the economy for the Government not to. |
Hello Deji99, Seeing Ivvie spew out all those stats on Jeep Cherokee must have been very troubling for you especially if you are a Jeep lover. A few months ago I got myself a 2003 Ford explorer. My heart sank when I saw all that was written about this model on the net. 6 months down the road I thank God everyday I bought this SUV for its comfort, drive smoothness etc etc. The sound system is from a different world. Makes you feel like moving into the car. Usually this kind of romance doesn’t go beyond one week when I get a car. The point is if you feel good about a particular brand buy it (better brand new otherwise next to new for your peace of mind) rather than buying a not so new popular brand you dont quite like. An average car user gets to keep a car for how long before he starts wanting another? Is it 3-4yrs. |
Hello Oluwaseun I was also frustrated by the non-receipt of certificate one year after purchase of Intercontinental PO shares . Fortunately it arrived via mail about two weeks ago. You can call Wema registrars on 012666778, 017732181 and have a chat with them. They are courteous and very professional. Hopefully when everyone adopts SEC's new guidelines in 2008 making share certificates obsolete, we will all have cause to smile. Pennywise. |
, but I go charge o!) and cross-deal when he/she gets the Cert. Then pray the cut-off is 10k units.
Please remember to post your secrets of the trade (tricks of the trade) for us to digest, I know you people have developed new tricks for 2008
