Definitely better than nothing and btw IBM is a good brand, similar to Accenture in my opinion. I assume you are referring to the I.T. Consulting arm. Any experience will make a difference
Yes, said it right. To me it was short and I wish it was up to 6 months or 1 yr. I worked with GTS, IBM's IT Consulting and Outsourcing division.

I second this post. Good list above and as poster said it's very important to start applying now as most companies who sponsor for work visa start their graduate recruitment from about now most close before end of year and offers out by feb.

For those going for undergrad degrees, I cannot stress enough the importance of an internship. I thank God I had this information and was able to secure an internship with an investment bank. As they say the rest is history as I got a grad role with another bank after my second year so my final year was spent relaxing in the knowledge I had a job and work permit sorted. After the graduate programmes, I moved across to consulting where I currently work.

I will also advice people who are interested I'm business and finance roles to look at seo London. They help people from ethnic minorities to get roles in the city. I was able to get a second internship via seo so they are very good.

For those interested in areas like audit or consulting. The big 4 is a good area to look at because they recruit a lot of grads so easily sponsor for work permit. Depending on the school you are attending, you may find it a bit easier applying to regional offices e.g. reading etc as competition for London is high and you are competing with the lse's, imperial etc.

Anyway good luck all and always happy to help with any queries.
Thank you Boss. Unfortunately, I was only able to do a summer internship with IBM. I hope that helps me in my hustle.

ENgineering companies I know that sponsor:

2. Woodgroup
3. Foster Wheeler
4. Petrofac
5. BT
6. Rolls-Royce

And many more
Other companies are:

Even if it is stated that they require UK/EU citizens, there is no harm in applying as I have heard of a few people who have done that and were sponsored.
I will have a look at the later because I am a businesss student.

For those of you that intend to stay back, please start applying for jobs now. The earlier the better. By december/January, most big companies that sponsor candidates would have filled their graduate intake positions for Septemeber start next year.
I was lucky I got this advise from a recruitment fair early enough. You may want to check these sites as the graduate programs have openned for most companies:
targetjobs.co.uk/
and gradcracker.com - for science and engineering courses.

it may be worthwhile to have your CV reviewed (free) through your career services and rewritten if necessary by professional writers. You can search online for "CV writing services" or "professional cv writers" or use this link ( I used this recently and was the cheapest I could find):

http://secure.cvcentre.co.uk/ref/81460

there are others like www.bradleycvs.co.uk/ -

Your major problem, as you will findout, is filling the forms and writing good cover letters. I will advice you utilise your schools' "career services" as they will review your CV, and cover letters and also organise workshops on how to apply for jobs. Also, don't be discouraged because you are going to get many rejections but just keep applying and you may be lucky. (I personally applied to many companies before getting an offer).

I will alos advice that you know what you want - this will help you narrow down the companies to apply to and will also keep you focused.

Wish you all the best.
Please, any pointers to some companies that my be willing to sponsor. I am a frequent user of Targrt jobs, been getting emails with graduate opportunities but most of these companies still write iy boldĺy that they dont sponsor. I going to one job gairs at the University of London hosted by Target jobs. I hope I get on the useful info I am searching for...

The appreciation of the sunlight is the best part of it. Same happened to me when I landed and kept praying for little sunlight everytime; could even stand for 4 hrs outside just for that warmth...

But this year cold is not that much yet, more yet yo come..

Firstly, I dont know when you are arriving. Secondly, I cant guarantee you it is not going to be hectic but its sort of work especially when the uni is resuming on monday.
Agents could be your best shot at the end of it all. I suggest you use rightmove, umoove & gumtree for early approach.
Dont forget some deposit & reliable UK referee for the accommodation.
Good luck

spikesC: Seems people despise Lloyds.

Which account do you have with barclays?
Normal current account or student current account?
STUDENT CURRENT ACCOUNT
Llyods and their banking policies is so confusing. They sometimes do things that are annoying like questioning the source of your funds, even when they know you are an international student. They may also go ahead and close your account if no proper explanation is given as they did to a mate... Barclays all the way.

Been a while
Hope you dey kampe wink wink

@ thread, it beats me hollow why incoming Nigerian students think they can just waltz into UK and pick up accommodation without wanting to shell out on hotels prior to picking up the accommodation embarassed embarassed
If you have 'reliable' people in the UK, it helps out yet the UK is a different kettle of fish to Naija
But if not, book a hotel or bed and breakfast to bed and then go view all those accommodation you have been viewing using the Internet
The UK is quite organized and you might even get something better than your 'online' accommodation viewed portfolios undecided
Don't be stingy, spend a little money on hotels/bed and breakfast outlets for the first few days
So you don't regret whatever accommodation you choose afterwards as tenancy contracts/agreements are quite binding here cool cool
Chief Sir, bosy is fine, soul & mind is also fine. Thank you. Hope you are alright too? Been a while cos I am always on the sideline in this forum & listening.I have also been trying hard to make so much dent on my CV with every opportunity wey I see for the sake of greaduate roles.

MrsBreezy: Hahah I swear I like you cool. But Ehm the ceremony and the dress too must be top notch too.
Hahahaaaaa... Look at you two. Well for my to-be-wifey, I am not sure the ring must be restricted to just 3 jewellers, I am pretty confident that I will perform well in wowing her with the ring I will propose with. I dont want to spend all my bucks on ring, then there will be no food and drinks at the ceremony.
But for our wedding ceremony, God save the invited from too much admiration. Na prayer I dey pray make oluwa bless me and give me a good source of income. That day should be unforgattable.
RomanceRe: Marriage Proposal: Does The Quality Of The Engagement Ring Matter? by peteafrik88(m): 12:47pm On Sep 01, 2014
Adaeze003: Hmm... I think I'm logical in my dealings so it depends. So you gave me a cheap ring coz its love that matters? I hope you won't mind if I don't use it after that night? It's the love that matters rii? If you won't mind then I guess I'll consider... But then again, to get married, one must be financially stable ie, have a steady source of income(doesn't matter how much) so, if you do have a source of income, what's your excuse 4 getting me something that'll wash out in a month?

If you don't believe you must give me a ring to prove anything then don't! Carry on with marriage rights without it after all its not our culture.

So yes, I care 4 the type of ring. It must be worth something or none at all...
I am a man and I totally agree. Just because its all about Love, you mustnt get the cheapest rock out there. Marriage or engagement are meant to be a one in a lifetime thing for both and I will always suggest, even to be kids to come to put a lil extra bucks in for that. Something not too extravagant if you dont have much, but if you do have the bucks, spend some more extra extra for that shit...
You no want make you own fiancee snap the rock and upload to IG too.
Dont dull, mate...

Bambamzzzz: WOW.because i wanted to get a studio apartment before when i get to Birmingham because my wife will be coming next month to join me and after checking online then i get to know that one bedroom flat price mostly are the same price with studio.
I just need good advice about all these things because i dont wanna do something that will regret at the end
Most 1-bedroom are almost same prize as studio, the difference I have noticed is that you may end up sharing a kitchen or bathroom with other tenants. But a studio gives you all in 1 package with no sharing at all, little or cramped space; but a 1-bedroom is more spacious. If you dont mind any of these things, you can choose which ever 1 that suits you.
As @ worry359 said in his last post, I did prefer a B&B which is more cheaper than a hotel. You can now stay there long enough to look for accomodation. I suggest when you arrive Birms, just ask a taxi driver to take you to a cheap B&B in town; which they will gladly do. Just to also mention, I always suggest you try and arrive early in the day preferably in the morning, as this can give you some extra time to sort a lot of things out, thats if you get very proactive and hardworking. Some ppl are lucky just like in my case, you may even find a suitable accomodation before the end of the day and start making arrangement asap. All I may suggest, gather info on agents, landlords etc; on your arrival you can start calling for viewing asap. If you are lucky, you may end up staying in a hotel or B&B for just 1 or 2 nights. Lots of savings, mate.
When I arrived Portsmouth for the first time, I was able to secure accomodation same day, paid and moved into it in 3 days time. I didnt have to stay in a hotel as I had someone in London.
Good luck to you....

Bambamzzzz: Happy Sunday my oga's in the house, kindly advise me if its okay to stay where its 45mins by bus to my school? please because i have no experience
Not at all. I will always stay in a hotel or B&B for couple days when I arrive, and proactively hunt for nearby accomodations. Some landlords with accomodations nearby Unis mostly use local estate agents to advertise their property. At most, I may stay about 15 mins walk away from where you take lectures. Some Unis have good Uni bus system for such student about 15 mins away...

What you mean is I walk into Barclays with my GTBank debit card, tell them I will like to deposit some funds into my Barclays acc through POS. Then use the POS as usual and the funds grt into my Barclays without charges from any of the parties involved. And above all I can receive cashback from GTB.

Please, kindly confirm my understanding of this fund transfer process?

Emmagency: Hello...anyone with an idea on this?
From the little knowledge I have, these london branches of our banks operate independent from their parent company back home. FBN, GTB & some other also have branches, which from my enquiry one cant access their nigerian bank account from these branches.
You have to open an account with the london branch and do your normal bank transfers as usual, I guess those fees we are trying to escape from will still suffice, but maybe a little less...

royalsweetness: Never thought of this cash back method, meaning you could use the self checkout in shops as a kinda ATM cheesy
Most retailers dont give cashbacks to credit/debit cards with bank accounts not domiciled in UK. The self serve machines are also programmed not nowadays.
It used to work when I arrived UK but most major retailers that support cashback (Sainsburys, Tesco, Co-op & ASDA) suddenly stopped it. It seems they might have discovered the difficulty of obtaining such funds from foreign banks & this might be a easy way of preventing bank card frauds that most tourists face when they travel to other countries with there bank cards...
My advice is bring some cash along, try & see if any method works for you but you will be prepared in the case of disappointment.

These supermarkets have online exams and telephone interviews, so I reckon you try and build your communication skills.
