naptu2: @ Pharoh: you could buy into the BRT system. With that you are sure that the government would protect you against agbero and NURTW.

The reason why there are so many transport operators is because they provide different levels of service in terms of quality.

For example, in Lekki you have the state government owned BRT (Lagbus). It is comfortable, but they waste time with unnecessary bureaucracy (ticket verification, etc) and their route selection is not very sensible. Some people use Lagbus because of the comfort they get. Others have no time to waste and would prefer to use NURTW services, no matter how uncomfortable they are. The Trade Union Congress started it's own BRT service which is more efficient than Lagsbus and more comfortable than NURTW.

So, you can conduct research, get a lucrative route, figure out your comparative advantage and buy into BRT.

Thank you very much, will definitely look into that and see what i can do in the nearest future and i think more competitors will lead to appropriate pricing and quality services.

Concerning the research you talked about, i think most valuable information concerning issues like this should rest with NURTW,LASTMA, LAMATA or existing commercial operators. Will look at how to get those information and work on it but i think LAMATA and LASTMA should step up to regulate pricing, route management and proper scheduling to incorporate time tables and journey planning systems.

Symphony007: What happened to the light rail project? Is'nt this what modern cities need? Not buses to contribute to the existing traffic gridlock.

The light rail project is still on course but that is not enough to service the whole state. Lagos state can accommodate different forms of transportation like bus, rail, metro, tram and waterways.

1) The government tried what you are talking about in 2001 (I.e, the "City Bus project). They granted licenses to City Bus and other companies to run monopoly services in Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki. It didn't work. Area boys and agberos destroyed the buses. The franchisees could not provide enough buses. Basically, it brought chaos.

That is the problem if you do not fuse these guys into the new system as no one wants to loose their source of livelihood.

2) In planning the BRT system, the government took into account the lessons it learnt from the failed City Bus project.

A) Other commercial buses are not barred from plying these routes.

Will not barring them cause problems for the BRT system in the future if they get their acts together and compete effectively. Both systems are not normally suppose to run side by side if the environment is sensitive to price and also if there are no holdups on the routes anymore. I meant private contracts and franchise are not suppose to run side by side with commercial drivers which is why the government banned them in 2001.

B) Molue and danfo bus drivers are part of a union called the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). The NURTW are franchisees in the BRT project. Basically, molue and danfo drivers are retrained to meet standards set by government. They are then given BRT buses to drive. The project is financed by some banks. The government guarantees the NURTW loan. It's a win-win situation for everybody.

This is good then but i thought of a system that these nurtw guys would have implemented if they got their acts together and would not need to transform into the BRT system. It all depends on the returns at the end of the day, will they make more money from the brt system or their own system. what are the incentives the government laid for them to tranfer to the BRt system and sorry for all these questions o.

CohenJane: There are four to five LAGBUS from Ikorodu to Unilag, and Unilag to Ikorodu on a daily bases. I don't know about Yabatech

Thank you very much but i was not really looking into that, i am thinking of something between the distance covered by lagbus/BRT and keke Napep. I believe the student going to unilag should live in other parts of the state apart from ikorodu and they will need a shuttle service to beat holdups, incessant stopping at every bus stops and meetup with lectures on time.

naptu2: The University of Lagos Students Union (ULSU) runs shuttle services from within campus to Yaba and Bariga (they are the only ones allowed to run services within campus). Members of NURTW provide service up to the campus gate. There are also BRT services.

Yeah this is exactly what am talking about and i experienced it when i was there early this year. I noticed that the students were having problems with the commercial drivers in terms of price and appropriate stops which should be a working distance to their schools.

So i was thinking if there is possibility of extending that service to other destinations like oyingbo, costain, surulere, bode thomas and ojuelegba or areas close to those schools. I don't know what percentage of students stay in campus but the service is needed by those staying outside campus. you know in some other parts of the world, there are student hostels located at different places and you can create a special bus service that passes through these hostels and some other places to service the students and people living in that area.

earthgreeners: U CAN TRY (Ijesha -Ojuelegba- Yaba- Unilag) route, its not yet serviced by private and wld neva av a BRT lane cos of the nature of the route...
That would be a good business that wld kick out the Old coaster buses on that route.....u can train and employ those drivers and conductors in order to save their asses.....

Thank you very much for your reply, never wanted to look into it because of the problems of touts, nurtw and existing commercial drivers as stated by naptu. I don't know how the route looks like but if a private bus company is not given monopoly over that route then it might not be lucrative. Competing with those guys will not be nice under the conditions you stated above but will they want to be employed by you instead of them running the statusquo as it is now?.

It seems the commercial viable routes will be the first to be gulped as lagos state moves to a planned and well managed transport system. So i ask what happens to less lucrative routes?, will they be run under public service obligations and given a monopoly for this. What will be the implications of granting monopoly to lucrative routes and also if it is left to open competition then how do they prevent the operators from forming a cartel?.

Please who knows the lucrative routes in lagos state where there are no private bus contracts yet and will not be serviced by BRT in the nearest future. What are the possibilities of providing a shuttle bus service around unilag and yabatech that transports students from their place of residence to the campus. I know that for Lasu, it will be possible to do that if most of the students live in Iba town, okokomaiko and environs.


So lets discuss about the implications of this new initiative by the government and how it affects the existing commercial drivers now ( danfo, costal and molue ).

All these danfo, costal and molue drivers better smell the coffee and wake up from their slumber. Lagos is heading towards the route of a planned city and it will surely go the direction of using bus contracts and franchise service for its public transport system.

They better organize themselves into small companies that can service some certain routes or areas by negotiating with the state or local government. They will soon be thrown out of the market if they don't act fast and before you know, there will be protest everywhere. I think Lagos state government should engage these existing commercial operators but i can see that it is headache for them to incorporate them due to their lack of education.

Anybody who has intention of investing in the transport system should better start engaging the state government now. I hope they don't give these contracts to their friends and close associates ooo. I have been thinking of running special bus services that doesn't exist yet in lagos state. Maybe its time self to look into these if someone can form a company and win some lucrative routes or areas in lagos state.

No picture of the bus? and how does it affect existing private ownership in the long run?. This franchise of a thing is more of a government granted monopoly over some certain routes or areas as stated in the article. So those statement of there will be existing commercial service providers to serve as competitors does not really work well in practice. They should have asked these private companies taking up this franchise service to employ those commercial drivers and conductors to avert problems in the future.

I think everyone should look at this article written below concerning the incident and see where the blame lies. It is surely in the hands of the government as attributed by the traders who own shops in that ojo giwa street. The nigerian police as usual is complacent in this case and it is high time the government is up and doing with their duties.

P.S I am not discounting the sharp and unlawful practices of Nigerian business men but the fault lies with the government for not putting things in check. DaLover: Yes, they can, many residential building are converted to commercial buildings outside of the master plans in VI, lagos and elsewhere in nigeria, and we see this everyday ...agencies of government fail, hence the government fails...but decides to blame others

That is why i was throwing the question to the poster who said we should exempt the agencies from this incident when they are rightly the ones to be blamed for failing to perform their duties. We are on the same boat and your observation is right on point because u will surely see shops littered all over the place without proper regulation from the government. They are only concerned about collecting taxes mainly without proper regulation and we also have to throw some blames to our greedy landlords too.

Though i am asking that question in light of someone saying u don't need an agency or authority to tell you not to do in some certain things.

Now to answer your question, there are housing management authority, agencies that have housing estates and government environmental agencies that should be responsible for this. If someone is using a residential area for commercial storage of goods then there should be appropriate authority that they can be reported to who can come in to fix this illegality.

Due to our peculiar system of individuals owning residential properties then the landlord of the place should be contacted or they can take the case to the local government to report the illegality. Do you want to tell me now that someone can just convert his house into a commercial storage facility in a well regulated estate like Victoria garden city or the likes without the appropriate authority or the housing agency in charge taking care of this?.

I mean most people in Nigeria stores petrol which is highly inflammable in residential areas for their generators for heavens sake.

It seems our tribalism has made us to look our tribal leaders as infallible entities as there is nothing in this world that would make us to condemn them because of tribalism.Fashola is a governor and at the same time a Nigerian even though he is Yoruba, so please lets treat this case as a Nigerian affair and call a spade what it is.

1. I think you need to put the numbers in propoer perspective. The 900 still fufils the optimum of standard students/teacher ratio of 1:25-30.
2. I transfered my studentship from Federal Government College Ogbomoso to Lagos State Model College Meiran in 1989 and I both schools the class number was then 30 or less.
3. I think in terms of cost/benefit pov, lettting more students have access and share the standard (world class facilities), It is most likely wise for Osun State to consolidate her resources in a central, well stocked, standard facilities schools like these as against the nonsesen mushroom SPEB schools that look like poultry challets.
4. Recall that even the Senate committee on education led by Senator Uche Chukwumerije ("Fujimerenge" has commended the education strategy and implementation in Osun state and also recommended it as model for all other states.....

Nice analysis from you and i even think it should accommodate more as the student population in the vicinity grows. Normally with adequate data, the government should know where to site these facilities and how big it should be to accommodate the intended demand or supply.

Since it should be from primary to junior secondary school then if we go by 30 students per class. We will have 30 classrooms and dividing this by 9 covered in this tier of education then we will end up with three to four classrooms for each class. That is from primary one to junior secondary school three which is not bad as they can all share the facilities to reduce operating cost instead of spreading the facility into two or more schools .

I don't like this same style of design u see everywhere in Nigeria with balcony that also serves as the pathway for walking. They should come up with new ideas like some of this private schools and hope it is not only one they are building.

Hmm well i just think you and Jarus as moderators in this section can create a thread to ask everyone for contributions how to move the section forward. The issue of additional mods should be discussed and other things like curbing tribalism, fighting and cursing also can be discussed. I believe every member has one or more ideas to drop, so let everyone drop his or her idea there. This is the end of the year and its a good time to iron issues out so that we don't take all these rubbish to the new year.

Thanks friend for your comments and suggestion, but on a second thought i think am shelving the idea so that the moderators can take care of that. I will contribute to this thread and what ever initiative the moderators embark upon to move this section forward from my initial write up.
