Politics › Re: I’ll Step Down For A Northern Candidate - Ribadu by Pharoh: 3:35pm On Mar 15, 2011
We all knew these all along and that's why i have never supported any core northern candidate, they are all the same thing. The northerners are very good in political strategy and the south will always be fooled believing in democracy and modernism. The north are always prepared to the battlefield and see what he is saying that any northern candidate is better than any southern candidate. This is an insult and am ashamed that these people receive any form of support in southern Nigeria. There is no two ways about it, the presidency stays in the south or the country will go up in flames.

The Bold is my point exactly. They gave reasons for being hesitant, but why are they now saying they have no reasons to be hesitant. Did they forget the reasons they gave before or Are they denying they ever gave reasons to avoid the first debate at all or Could it be that they have seen the light like most of us and now realise that those were too lame to be reasons in the first place? I'm really getting tired of the PDP trend of changing stories daily.

So my fellow 9ja man, i'm not talking about their various reasons been consistent or not. The point is that they gave us some reasons. [s]And dont get me wrong, this is a good news in many ways.[/s]
I see your point but to me i think the other party were actually saying they did not want to participate in any debate but their position has been that they want to participate if their concerns will be addressed. So they have always wanted to participate in a debate but those excuses were actually concerns they want to be addressed before they would participate. There is difference between i don't want to participate and these are my reasons which even when addressed still i would not participate and i have always wanted to participate but these concerns must be met before i go ahead. One is changeable and the other is not changeable but i really do like your points and the debate is a good news to me as well.

See how they shoot themselves in the foot, now are you admitting that the reasons you initially gave(see quote below) are weak and quite frankly transparent thereby not good or solid enough to actually be reasons.
The reasons they gave for avoiding the earlier debates up to this moment has been consistent and no changes even to this present revelation.  I would say they are very much on point for those excuses judging from the situation on ground and in my opinion the BON is the right party to organize this debate for fairness and impartiality. So those people shouting that good luck has been avoiding debate are now proved wrong now. They should take up the challenge and join the president in whatever debate he decides to participate as from now on.

@aisha

Please i really don't understand your post or what is the aim of this thread but i have this to say to you. The protest by the save Nigerian group in itself did not give good luck the presidency and though i might not deny the contribution it made. It was just part of a total process and to give it a fair percentage, i would say less than five percent in my humble opinion.

The past is gone and now there is a new election, can you guys just support your candidates without being enemies with the others who do not support your own candidate?.

Point is even if someone did it on his behalf, the principle is that you can't take the benefit of something and then run from the burden!
Still confused? Let me come down to your level grin
Buhari never personally stoned anyone but he has to bear responsibility for his alleged "supporters'" stoning!!!
For the records, I have SEEN the biscuit physically!

BTWN, isnt it really worrisome that of all the issues I raised, it is only the five naira biscuit part that is capable of a rebuttal huh
Taking benefit for what or you have not considered the possibility that he might not even know about the existence of this so called biscuits?. Please for your sake, you don't go about pushing your intelligence or taking those cheap shots of coming down to other peoples level. It shows you are not even intelligent, supporters stoning goodluck campaign train is not in the same category as making a five naira biscuits.

pj5:
BTWN, isnt it really worrisome that of all the issues I raised, it is only the five naira biscuit part that is capable of a rebuttal huh
I am sure that you are intelligent enough to read the title of the thread and stick to the topic, if you want answers to your other questions then this is not the place to do that. You can simply create a thread for that or raise the issues in any other thread that has been created for that purpose. This thread is about the distribution of biscuits so use your little intelligence to stick to the topic like an adult okay?.

That's the simple truth, they just hate him and they have been paid to do this or incited to point it out exactly. It is fellow southerners that are going about that he is being petted with stones because of his performance which has not even happened in the whole south. People do not think anymore and read between the lines, if it was about his performance then he would have been rejected in the southern part of Nigeria as well.

Some of you are totally devoted to individuals rather than to the concept of competent leadership .
Everyone is devoted to competent leadership in which the definition is subjective so to each with his or her own choice hence the reason why the electorate is divided between the three present candidates. You can only support competent candidates that do have realistic chance of winning and utomi does not have that at the moment so he is out of the drawing board. We all have to pick among goodluck, buhari or ribadu, everyone has made their choice so let us respect that and hope for a better nigeria.

This is not an avenue to insult Niger-Deltan's, please watch your tongue and behave like a sensible man. No niger-deltan who supports buhari or ribadu would have agreed with that statement above. Please behave like a reasonable person and focus on goodluck/PDP alone thank you.

Yes, it is not mandatory, but it is a good gesture to the people that you wanna rule.
A leader that is compagning to rule the nation should always be ready and be prepared, and not to chicken out of a simple debate.
My brother the people that you want this gesture extended to are not a significant voting block, heck i can even count all the goodluck haters here on nairaland in three hours. There are many ways to reach your electorate in Nigeria which is different from the western world, debate or no debate trust me everyone already has a criteria that they used in choosing who to vote for. The educated ones do not need a debate to decide who to vote for neither does the market women or mechanics. You do not need debate to win election in Nigeria and not even in the next twenty years am sorry if the statuesque still remains like this.

Nice one Gbawe, but i don't think how a man can speak or answer questions can be used as a yardstick for judging a man or knowing if a man can deliver or not-- I beg to differ on that, oratory skills is different from leadership skills.
And even different from the intelligence you need to implement the whole gibberish that has been spilled on the debating platform. It is only those who do not have the Nigerian package needed to win an election that goes to every debate which they are called for. Those who are not campaigning are jumping from one debate to another and expect those doing the handwork to give them cheap publicity.

We dey laugh.

And what is a debate?
Is it not a form of telling people what they would do and tell us why they shd be voted instead of the other parties?
The people want debate and there is not reason why a leader should rub the people of that . . .  they spending the money of the people and people shd be respected at all times
You are right it is a form of communicating with the electorate but it is not obligatory for any candidate to toll that line of action.
There are real life campaigns, media campaigns ( print, television and radio ), there are word of mouth campaigns and even party meeting campaigns.
Even on election day, buying of votes, giving people provisions like rice, chicken and money, there are many ways to win votes in Nigeria ( africa ).
Debating to me with all honesty is good but not very effective in the Nigeria context so any candidate that opts out of it should not be castigated for that.
The educated populace wants a debate but sorry the last time i checked they did not constitute any strategic voting block in the Nigeria context.

We are not there yet where we should be hitting our head to the wall about debates so that's why i don't really care about it.
It is one thing to come and make a big show at the debate and be a failure when given the position to fulfill your manifesto.
Most of these candidates are just hitting on what the people want to hear but when they get there i know it will be a different story.

Excellent write up and good points above, time to lay this issue of debate to rest once and for all. The others can go ahead and participate in this debate but people should try and respect other people's choices.

The two madrid team should win, barca should win but who knows what sevilla has in store; Osasuna, valencia, villareal should win also.

Espanyol, bibao and mallorca should win or just make it a draw but i would have combined matches from different leagues instead of focusing on la liga alone.

Dis Guy:
the fuss is that he is in a stronger position as the current president, he is being challenged isnt this his opportunity to reinforce his popularity and show his leadership credential?

Are Nairalanders organising the debate or are you accusing the organisers of bias?
In life brother you pick the battles you can to win and which you know that you have the strongest advantage, it is called strategy. Winning an election involves many strategic moves and if going to a debate does not serve you well then avoid it and find better alternatives to win the election. The president is a person that is reasonable enough to make choices which he deems fit are beneficial to him and it is not by force to reinforce your popularity by going into a debate. There are countless ways to kill a rat and it is your choice to pick what kind of trap or tools you need to do that and so to you it is only in debate that you can show your leadership credentials?.

About bias well it might exist but i have not investigated it alot right now to make a conclusion but one thing i know is that. The opposition candidates has heated up the polity and shifted the advantage towards their division by shifting the direction of the questions towards their main arguments. In a very reasonable debate i don't think those questions are needed in a debate and that is one of the reason goodluck is not interested in participating in the debate.

Dis Guy:
I don't know why you are dragging yourself in the mud over this GEJ issue, you sound like a fairly reasonable dude but defending johnny with all your might is make that assessment void!

Erm the last PM debate in UK, only three candidate took part, and i dont remember seeing more than three or four candidate in the American presidential debate, so to your answer yes it is possible, it is the right of the organisers not to extend an invitation to everyone
My point is in those countries you do not normally have more than four parties that presents a candidate for the presidential election. What makes you  to think that the other candidate are not better than those invited?. Do you think that if you were in ACN and you want to  contest for the presidency that you would be given the chance?. Those other parties are the best way for you to contest and in the spirit of fair play why should the invitation not be extended to you?. How would the Nigerian people know that you have a better offer or in your conclusion the invited candidates are the best among the contestants.

Let me ask you, what do you think is the criteria they used in sidelining the other candidates? are we looking for those that has a chance of winning the election or those who has better programs to fix the country?.

About your comment concerning me sounding reasonable, trust me i have called names and abused a lot and it does not do anything to me one bit. I don't care what the other person thinks about me, i am here to give my own perspective to issues and everyone is entitled to their own opinion that should be respected. If having a divergent opinion means i am not reasonable then it is the problem of the person thinking so and not me because what i care is my own argument which has been well thought out by me.

Trust me if someone like pat utomi, donald duke or fashola is running, i will be not be here talking about goodluck so i have my own reason why i fall in line with him most times because of the other candidates.

There's nothing new in excluding candidates from a debate. Lagos just had one and only selected candidates were invited.
So what is the fuse if he decides to exclude himself from the debate or is the right to exclude someone from a debate vested only on the organizers?.

He is does not want to be a part of a debate that deselects candidates without any clear mechanism for doing that which is even not democratic.

I am with goodluck on this one and trust me i would love to see a debate but not with this bias and sentiments flying all around the place.

God bless you and hope goodluck haters will reason for the first time and leave sentiments aside, this is a valid objection to this debate and it should be enough reason not to participate.

GEJ will have my vote and many other Nigerians  if only he participates in the debate, period. I enjoyed presidential debate in other civilize countries (America,Britain etc). so why not enjoy same here? huh  cry
Please brother sorry to bother you but how many presidential candidates do they have in civilized countries?

Is it possible to sideline any presidential candidate in those civilized country no matter how small their party is?
Politics › Re: Jonathan May Shun Presidential Debate by Pharoh: 7:30pm On Mar 09, 2011
Yes it is good to insist on every presidential candidate participating in this debate else they should back out. This is a very valid reason and if it is not fulfilled then it means there are sinister reasons why they picked just four candidate.
