These articles on gamji are pretty fascinating. The paranoia and fear the Northern elite seem to have about the south and Christianity. . . like, they blame the death of Kano's industry on Lagos, southern Christians, blablah

@Pharoh: I am starting to question how much employment farming can truly offer. Like, if you want to do it in an modern, internationally competitive way. Mechanized farming doesn't really offer a lot of jobs. Low-tech farming does, but isn't very efficient and competitive. . . so you'd need to prop it up with subsidies.

Honestly, manufacturing is what I think is the way to go to move the economy forward.

Farming these days requires some money to do well.
Farming when done properly can create jobs within the industry and other external industries like the service sector. We basically do not have much processing industry that is linked to the farming sector, a lot of what they produce is wasted because they cannot be stored or processed into other forms that can be preserved for a long time. Let them fix the infrastructure problem then the education and the farming methods, they need help and support in the fertilizer department and techniques in getting high crop yield.

Brother this people can feed nigeria and still export their products to africa and the other part of the world. Israel even begged for some portion of those land so that they can use it to feed the world. Farming alone is not the potential there because the processing industry and service sector also will get more employment if the farming industry is booming. Most of the processed food you see in nigeria are imported or are done by the few big companies in the hands of foreigners. We need to process the tomatoes, onions into paste, groundnuts into different kinds of products. We can get a lot from this industry when there is are opportunities for complementary industries. When all these are working then we will definitely see some kinds of employment because not everyone has to work in the farm but other small scale companies or service sectors linked to the farming sector will also provide jobs.

NN24, is a Nigerian news channel hosted by DSTV a South African media concern, and is affiliated with CNN, plus has a news content deal with Reuters (see-http://www.nn24.tv/about_us.php). Would the American public and media support a Presidential debate held by a media organisation hosted and under the control of foreign powers?

BON (Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria-http://www.broadcastnigeria.org/) is a statutory corporation comprising of WHOLLY owned public and private NIGERIAN broadcasters that have a long history of holding Nigerian Presidential debates and the President has acquiesced to debate his opponents at their televised debate on March 29th, 2011.

Are we saying that Nigeria at 50 years plus and with a population of over 150 million people should have The Most Vital Debate of the next four years held under the banner of a concern under the control of a foreign power and whose broadcast can only be accessed as a Pay Per View service or online which are both media available only to the elite?

Then we do this and expect the world not to view us as a Banana Republic so ready to give up control over vital issues crucial to national destiny.

Any sitting President who agrees to attend such a debate is not worth the respect of his people who voted him into office not just as President but as head of state. A Head of State like the Queen of England is a ceremonial representation of a people and their culture not the culture of a foreign power except such a President is a puppet or the nation is independent.

For those who may not know, NN24 is completely and totally hosted by DSTV. DSTV's content is under the control of the South African Broadcasting Commission (SABC). Having our Presidential debate under the NN24 banner means subjecting Nigeria to the control of a foreign power. There MUST be a debate, but such a debate must be hosted and controlled by stations that are subject to no other control than a statutory Nigerian body.

While we are at it we may also host foreign powers at our military infrastructure and institutions.

Now sticking to only facts, and logic (no insults or immaturity) who can fault this logic?

And whose fault is it that those you think can be the difference, do not know how to appeal to those that can vote them into power? let me guess Gej's. Nigeria is maturing, we've got to learn at our own pace. There is bound to be a violent and very bloody clash if the country doesnt grow at its own pace, Gej may not be the best candidate out there but he's an extremely critical part of that "Maturity" process.
Which is why he needs all the support when the alternative strategy fails but i don't know why the progressives are not seeing this.

Sagamite:
Which progressives does he represent?

By sending a member of his cabinet and wife to go and join the fanfare of those welcoming a convicted corruption official?

Did you say PROGRESSIVES? DID YOU?
Ribadu and fashola are romancing with tinubu a know criminal, abacha's son is in buharis party. There is no way you can change Nigeria without dinning with the devil first. He is part of the progressives because he wants the progress of the nation but there are hawks outside preventing that.

Yeah we will offcourse because the progressives are not doing their homework and thinking that we are on par with the western nations where debates is all you need to win an election. They better put their house in order if they want to see change and by the way goodluck represents the progressive so why is he not receiving the needed support?.
Politics › Re: Reuters: Nigerian President Snubs Tv Election Debate by Pharoh: 10:40am On Mar 19, 2011
His office said in an official statement earlier this week that he would feature only in a debate organised by the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON), which he said had been the "traditional platform" for such debates.

BON, a coalition of broadcasting stations in Nigeria, is planning to stage its presidential debate at the end of this month, and Jonathan has said he was ready to participate.

What other matters can be more important? Please explain.
Do i look like the president or does a president not have daily schedules anymore?. He is the president and he will surely allocate his time towards events that he deems are worth his attention. He is the one that surely knows what is important to him and not NN24 or any other person or body.

Kobojunkie:
I am sorry but people have a right to do so as his excuse does not seem to make sense to all -- so far, it is baseless, and just shoddy by a lot of standards (sounded more like a GBAJUE/419 excuse). I mean how dare a whole president suggest that a licensed legitimate and independent organization is not recognized enough to hold a presidential debate . . . that is unacceptable as an excuse.  I can imagine all sorts of lawsuits if that had been here in the United States.

I get that you think it is ironclad even though it is clear at this point you are not even able to able to explain the why or how of your conclusion to anyone else but yourself but come on . . . . for you to then decide there is no point for anyone else to crucify him for this is a leap. People do not think or reason the way you do in this. Some  people expect more from their leaders . . . Jonathan included.
I do understand your point and expect more from my leaders, i am not in support or happy that he was not at  the debate but at the same time it is not a crime for me to accept his excuse for not doing that. He simply was not there, we are sad and pissed about that but in my own case i see reasons with his excuse simple. Even as the president he has choices to make and we also do have our own choices to make as well. He was not at the debate based on his choice and if we are so pissed off then exercise your right and make your own choices as well like not voting for him. Please he has not said that NN24 is not a legitimate media house to conduct a presidential debate but the date doesn't fall into his schedules and moreover it is not a crime to evaluate a debate invitation and refuse to attend based on the outcome of your assessment.

We know he was able to grant an interview yesterday to D'Banj(again might as well had been Lady Gaga), but gave no indications that he would not have time for a debate the next day.
Debates are different from interviews and there is not point crucifying him for not coming as there are other debates available which he his surely going to make.

Please use your intellect to think through answers for each of your questions.

Use your knowledge of why talented people do not emerge in Nigerian politics as a guidance tool in your thinking.

You will find the answers very easy and wonder how come you can ask questions at such a level.
So fashola and donald duke are not talented enough to negate the response which you gave me above?

There is a revolution across africa and the middle east challenging the old establishments so what are the so called talented Nigerian people doing? . They are coming to facebook and nairaland to abuse the less intelligents that has relegated them to the side corner?. The talented people are making waves there in the west where you are so what is the use of these so called talented Nigerians?.

Please what is the use of these so called intelligent Nigerians to the nation and if they have no concrete usefulness then why all the noise abusing the less intelligent that is whooping their ass?.

Sorry, mate. But with my intellect, my capability to perform is well beyond the realms of GEJ's intellect.
Then why are you not in the debates or or in the race to become the president that can fix the nation.?

Why not use your intelligence and intellect to win a common local government election in Nigeria to prove your statement.?

He has used his little intelligence to be the president of a nation but can we say that of you as well?

Please all what we are asking if for people to just give him the respect as the president and there not wrong if you hate him but these abuses are really uncalled for.
Politics › Re: Assessment Of Judgement Of The President: Goodluck Jonathan by Pharoh: 1:35am On Mar 19, 2011
This is the part of the reason why the quality of this forum is going down, people throwing abuse here and there which is uncalled for. It is fashionable these days to abuse the president by those who could not have even done better than him.

Politics › Re: Reason Why Jonathan Did Not Attend The Presidential Debate by Pharoh(op): 1:26am On Mar 19, 2011
Kobojunkie:
I understand that you have explained YOURSELF, but you are suggesting here that Jonathan’s reasons are LEGITIMATE and posturing that it is right for the president to forego a debate simply because it is not organized by BON.
• There is NO SUCH thing as a MAJOR debate ---  no one group has sole rights or major rights to debates, even in Nigeria

• NN24 is a credible media house and has the license to show for this – you positing that a debate by NN24 is not credible simply because BON( a private organization) is not involved is simply you trying to disparage NN24 simply because you can

• You have NO PROOF that the debate was biased in anyway --- If you do, please show it or stop, again, trying to damage the image of NN24

• Again, NO one Group, or groups in Nigeria have SOLE rights to debates – let alone Credible debates in Nigeria

Also, the people crucifying him are doing so mainly because HE DID NOT SHOW UP for the debate and gave a flimsy BASELESS reason for his absence. NN24 is a legitimate and registered media house in Nigeria and the president simply pretending it suddenly has the say when it comes to what organization can or cannot organize a debate speaks volumes of what this administration thinks of Nigerians. Worse, he had no problems with granting someone like D'Banj( might as well had been Lady Gaga) an interview yesterday.
The president wanted to attend this debate but it clashed with his schedules and they have not said other media houses cannot conduct debates. I am not saying that the debates is biased and i have given it a passmark already. People just don't want to see reasons why a debate can be skipped because they are biased towards NN24 and forget that there are other debates coming up. My point is if people say that the one organized by BON and company is tilted in favor to the president then what can we say about NN24?.

Kobojunkie:
WOW . . . you even missed that one  . . . lol

Facebook is Not a major Channel, BUT Jonathan has had no problems using it to his advantage. So the excuse that NN24 is not a major channel and hence the reason for his absence is horrible as an excuse. Do you get it now??
The reason they gave was not about being a major channel but that the date was clashing with their unchangeable schedules hence NN24 should have teamed up with the traditional platform instead.
Politics › Re: Presidential Debate on NN24 by Pharoh: 1:12am On Mar 19, 2011
Kobojunkie:
No it is NOT an organization IN CHARGE . . . NO one group has SOLE RIGHTS to PRESIDENTIAL Debates . . . that is UNHEARD OF.
It is part of the organization and i agree with you about the monopoly stuff but there is no monopoly in this case.

It is funny that even absentee goodluck is beating ribadu at the polls for today's debate.

Kobojunkie:
Facebook is seen only ONLINE in Nigeria--- that has not stopped the president from using that as his MAJOR channel for reaching the Nigerian people.

I don't get the many excuses  . . . really!
I don't think facebook is the major channel for reaching out to Nigerians as there has been campaigns, posters, party meetings, adverts on television, newspapers and radio stations. There has been interviews, meetings and endorsements from important groups and associations in the country as well.

Only the main 4 were called on . .  . If you watched the debate, you would note that was said too.
What criteria are we going to use to judge the main candidates? . . .so only main candidates has the right to a debate?.

By your reason above can we extend it and create a criteria to choose a media house that is the main entity to conduct a debate?. This is what i have always asked for, fairness and justice to all candidates and media houses.
Politics › Re: Reason Why Jonathan Did Not Attend The Presidential Debate by Pharoh(op): 1:01am On Mar 19, 2011
Kobojunkie:
No, we do not have a traditional platform . . . BON has simply been involved in organizing some past debates. that does not now make them the one and only group that can. I can't believe you are even swallowing this up. NO one Organization out there HAS THE SOLE RIGHTS on presidential debates. That is against what these debates really represent.
I have explained myself on the other thread and i do support other stations organizing a debate and neither am i swallowing this up just like that without thinking. I don't believe in sole rights but if he does not attend this then there are others to attend without people crucifying him like this is the major and only credible debates that we can have. I am open to about three or five debates before the election but i am really not cool with the bias against the president. I am not saying this because he is my candidate and even if i have the chance to vote this debates will not be the sole yard stick for doing that.

Wait  . . . . I am confused. BON is merely an organization out there that tries to act to get media houses together on occasion. Now you pretend it is an organization IN CHARGE OF PRESIDENTIAL DEBATES?
Sorry it is one of the organizations in charge and there are others like

Nigerian Election Debate Group (NEDG), an amalgamation of the Nigeria’s mass media, the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON), the Nigeria Bar Association, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), market women and other civil society groups, which has been organising the presidential debate series since 1999.

This was after accepting the NN24.
Which was their final position so i wonder why NN24 was then waiting for the president after this declaration.

Kobojunkie:
But there is NO SUCH THING as a traditional Platform for staging presidential debates in Nigeria. That statement is just as silly as claiming there is a PARTICULAR WAY Presidential interviews ought to be conducted. So, I particular thought this a farce
There actually has been a traditional platform and the new stations are just trying to steal the show, the link below explains the traditional platform and goodluck also came out with an official reply for skipping this debate as well.
