Davo93: I have an issue with Premium News with the way they report their news. They show their political interest in a group and in Amaechi. Why would they report Amaechi as the chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum when we are all aware there is an issue going on there, betterstill why not Amaechi led faction of the Governors forum??
I have no problem with Amaechi or Jang rather with the way Journalism is been portrayed by Premium News. This is the second time i am noticing this with them. You'll cease to have this ur "mumu" problem the very day you know that 18 is greater than 16. And democracy is a "majority" thing. |

ujoinme: Why must you always bring the issue of the military take over! it is either you are too young to remember how bad it was in those days or you are one of those who benefited from the military largesse.
In democracy everywhere, there is always power tussle and leaders use whatever means to secure power, there is one ongoing between Amaechi and the present admin. Thats usual in a democracy time will tell who will prevail. Before you guys start casting stones i will advice that you wait till the real story comes out. do you guys know what circumstances surrounded the police blockade? did they know it was the gov? did they think it was someone else trying to access the govt. house? did the police know the gov. itinerary? until more information is out on the issue, we all will be making baseless assumptions.
for you who is advocating military take over remember as much as i do not like the way GEJ and amaechi are going about their disagreement, that in military days Amaechi will not be acting the way he been acting towards the govt. at the centre. He is accorded this rights because we have democracy hence ability to dissent. No matter how bad our democracy is we should all be rooting for it because the worst democracy is better than the best military rule. and as nigerians we know this by experience. Pls in what way has Amaechi been acting against the govt at the centre? The constitution that made the president is still the same one that made the governor. So what is your problem? |
Politics › Re: ASUU Demands Will Cripple Govt – Maku by phildon: 5:47am On Sep 06, 2013 |
georgecso: The Federal Government has said that the nation will shut down if all the demands by striking university lecturers were to be met. Information Minister Labaran Maku stated this in Abuja yesterday while addressing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting. He was specifically reacting to why the government was yet to reach a compromise with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) amidst its claim of spending huge resources on the development of tertiary education in the country. Maku appealed to the ASUU to have a rethink on its demands and understand that there were many competing demands from other sectors. He said the huge funds spent to restore normalcy in some hitherto crisis-torn parts of the North could have been used to develop the educational sector. “If we say we will not work until every particular problem we face in this country is resolved, then, I am sure there is no sector that will work. If we all insist that every sector’s problem must be completely solved, that we will down tools and that we will not work, then, the country will stop working,” he said. “We are partners of the ASUU. We are friends. They are our patriots, and we understand the critical role that the universities teachers are playing in creating a new society that we are hoping to have. But at the same time, this is a reality question that we need to look at and we have to put the nation first. “I know that all of us desire more from the system, but the truth is that there are limitations and from the limitations we have, we believe that the ASUU really needs to do rethink and ensure that we reopen our universities because really, we are feeling the pain of our children being at home and this, indeed, is completely avoidable,” Maku said. http://dailytrust.info/index.php/top-stories/4808-ASUU-demands-will-cripple-govt-fg I'm not a freak of this govt but I can sense some senses in what this minister is saying. We honestly can't solve every problem at once. Is ASUU not carried away by some greed? |

emorse: thanks for pointing that out. Makes alot of sense. But what can you say about this? http://omojuwa.com/2013/07/untying-the-knot-sec-294a-and-b-of-the-99-constitution-frn-and-child-marriage-in-nigeria/
@phildon, please go through it too and tell me what you think. NB: I'm not avoiding your question o, I believe the answer is embedded in the link. The writer asked 3 questions and provided their answers all by himself. 1. Question 1 was wrong in the first place because S29(4) has (a) and (b) parts. (a) ”full age” means the age of eighteen years and above; (b) any woman who is married shall be deemed to be of full age. As you can see the entire subsection 4 is dedicated to defining 'full age' for the purpose of subsection 1, and not for the entire 1999 Conatitution. Subsection 4(b) is merely empowering a woman who is married to enjoy that priviledge any person aged 18 and above is enjoying. It never says any married woman is automatically 18 and above. No! She is "deemed" for ease of application. 2.For question 2, I sincerely do not see the nexus between Sec. 29(4)(a)&(b) and Item 61 of the Second Schedule of the ’99 Constitution. 3. Question 3 is mischievous because if what he called child marriage is legalised, it was not the Senate that legalised it. The Senate simply left the Constitution untempered! Let me make it clear that the Constitution does not have a general definition of "full age". And S29(4) only defined what it meant by "full age" for its use in subsection 1. And the Child Right Act has to be domesticated in your state before it can be applicable to you. |

emorse: This is from a lawyer's poimt of view. if you believe she's wrong, please give me reasons other than the fact that she's not Nigerian. www.lawschool.cornell.edu/womenandjustice/Featured-Comments/Nigeria-Constitution-29-4-b.cfm 1. to imagine that a Federal Constitution for Nigeria will busy itself with such mundane issues as marriage comes as laughable as pedantic as it is. The applicable relevant laws on the rights of all children vis-à-vis marital causes include Child Rights Act 2003, Matrimonial Causes Act 1990, Marriage Act 1990, Marriage (Validation) Act 1990, Criminal Code (Southern Sates) Act 1990, and Penal Code (Northern States) Federal Provisions Act 1990. 2. While this your lawyer could easily point out that " the clause is an implicit endorsement of child marriage", she could not do same to "for the purpose of renunciation of Citizenship" implies "for the purpose of marriage". 3. I'll put it to you again. If you delete Section 29(4)(b) from the Constitution, which part would I be violating if I marry an under 18? |
Politics › Re: Child Marriage - Children Threaten Hunger Strike Over Senate’s Resolution by phildon: 7:31pm On Aug 07, 2013 |
rabzy01: It is a shame how people who claim to be educated, learned and civilized cant even have the time to read and understand the provisions of the constitution. When one looks at the so called controversial provision,it is clear that it has nothing to do with marriage at all. The provision is on the right of Nigerians to renounce his or her citizenship which the constitution denied those who are under 18 but gives it to married women even if they are under 18. This provision has been there since 1979. I wonder how this promotes or forces under age marriage. Those saying it promotes under-age marriage should come out and tell us how many under-age marriages were contracted since 1979 as a result of this provision. My candid advice to those shouting and forcing innocent children to commit suicide is, force your senators, if you can, to enact laws that prohibits those under 18 from having SSEXXX before enacting laws prohibiting marriage. Thank u o jare. And this is the main reason we are still ruled by some clueless fellows. |

emorse: What explanations ma'am? That its only about the denouncement of citizenship ba? Can you then tell us how a girl under the age of 18 can be deemed to be of "full age"? She has to be MARRIED right? Doesn't that say to you that the constitution supports underage marriage? Ok, let's assume Section 29(4)(b) is deleted from the Constitution as you claim to prefer. Can you then quote any section in the Constitution that would prevent me from marrying an under 18? |

What do u expect? When Pastors Bakare and Oritsejafor are thretening to stage a protest to ensure that the law legalizing the marriage of minors is removed from our constitution. A law which they have been made to believe by the hype of our social media, had been forced into the 1999 Constitution by the Yerimas. An educated pastor and a lawyer in the calibre of Tunde Bakare would have studied Section 29 then find out if deletion or retention of subsection 4(b) necessarily have anything to do with legalizing the marriage of minors. They rather jumped into the bandwagon of our educated but mentally lazy youths who, if it were a story about Tonto Dikeh would have captured everything accurately. Where were these "activists" when the same Senate refused to support the granting of our Local Govt Councils autonomy? We should be ashamed of ourselves! |

Sincere 9gerian: It is the JOINT responsibility of the states, federal and local govt to create jobs and eradicate poverty.
The national purse is shared 50-50 by the federal govt on one hand and the states and local govt on the other (via state-local govt joint account).
So, while we ask how many jobs the federal govt has created in the last few years and what percentage of Nigerians have been lifted out of poverty through policies and programmes at the federal level, we should NOT forget the states.
How are the states and local govts creating jobs and eradicating poverty with their share of the national purse? How many jobs has Fashola or Sullivan Chime created in the last few years? These are critical questions that demand answers.
The problem of lack of jobs and increasing poverty cannot be solved without looking at the issue of exponential increase in population. But how can we tackle the problem of population if Buhari and other northern leaders see population as a tool for winning elections, wrecking havoc and earning more funds from the national purse?
In the long run, if we TRUELY want to drastically cut down unemployment rate and poverty, we MUST re-structure this country. Power must be de-centralised down to the states. The present arrangement where Abuja tries to feed 160million people can only breed more poverty and unemployment. It should be the other way round. It is the 160million people that should feed Abuja. In other words, the states must be allowed to harness their human and material resources for development and pay taxes to the centre. This is the only way forward.
But unfortunately, the northern politicians, with eyes fixated on oil money, will resist any attempt to re-structure this country. Currently, even passage of PIB is witnessing major resistance from the north.
Until the much needed re-structuring happens, we have to make do with what can be achieved under the present arrangement. Also the Boko Haram madness must have impacted negatively in the poverty and unemployment rates in the northern states in the last 2yrs (usually the bulk of these negative data emanates from the north and weighs down on the rest of the country) |
