As fo the rest of the epistle, it contains some hard facts, conspiracy theories, fallacies and is a bit divisive but stll interesting! But I need cash not controversy! Read and bone!

The herdsmen in Nigeria appear to have gained a new spur. They have be­come much more defiant and deadly, now completely acting above the law. What is more, the Federal Government has been, at best, lukewarm about it. The pa­tronizing silence of Government, States and Federal, about this treacherous development has only served as reinforcement to their new level of dangerousness.

There is a gathering of social forces forging their fresh impunity. In political life, the power of the front seat confers a special feeling on those who one of their own has come to occupy a high position of authority. The Fulani herdsmen in Nigeria should be feeling a new high on power, giving the fact that the President of Nigeria is of the same stock. The President doesn’t need to be more directly con­nected to the herdsmen or be their patron for this feeling to exist, and that is what is called Proximity to Power in Political Psychology.

If the cited political behaviour is a universal phenomenon, it then logically follows that those who are in positions of power have special roles to play in leashing and mitigating the excesses of their kinsmen. Under Dr. Good­luck Jonathan, the Ijaw, especially former militants, hopped around like kings, drove choice cars, lived in mansions in Abuja and ma­jor cities, and junketed the globe. The ex-militant commanders got outrageous contracts, some in ar­eas they knew next to nothing and made those areas of national con­cern contracted to them to grow worse. Such contracts ranged from sundry matters to national secu­rity. While wildly celebrating their proximity to power through their son, Jonathan did very little to cur­tail the excesses of his kinsmen and it counted gravely against him in the last election.


President Buhari cannot afford to fall into the same trap. The Presi­dent, who promptly condemned the Brussels bombing and asked for peace in Burundi, owes it a duty to Nigerians to speak up and hold the herdsmen accountable. Even the security agencies appear scared to face the herdsmen apparently for not being sure of the stand of Mr. President. This explains why it took the soldiers weeks to mobilize to Agatu where over 300 citizens were said to have been massacred by herdsmen and dozens of houses razed; while it took them perhaps only hours to rise to the arrest of the Ugwuleshi 76 in Enugu. Not­withstanding the United Nation’s agency report that Agatu is in total ruins, there is still no official Fed­eral Government reaction to the callous incident.

With this growing impunity, the herdsmen pushed east and have been engaged in bloody battles with many communities in Enugu and Abia States. The height of it was the said arrest of 76 farmers in Ugwuleshi in Awgu, Enugu State, for protesting the abduction of two underage girls from their commu­nity and herdsmen trampling on their farm crops. The farmers’ ac­tion, as a classic case of self-help, is a rash response to the refusal of State and the Federal Government to act like governments.

Governments exist for the pro­tection of lives and properties. Here, inactions of Government are only promoting anarchy. In Nigeria, primary functions of gov­ernment have been so poorly per­formed, leading to widespread civil disobediences and even terrorism. Governance being at the lowest ebb, most Public Utilities have all collapsed, thus forcing the citizens to provide virtually everything for themselves. Rather than fix the bad education sector, Government offi­cials, past and present, use dubious means to send their children over­seas for proper education, leaving the poor citizens to their fate in Nigeria. Such children return to choice appointments, reminiscent of the recent secret recruitments of only the children of top Nigerians at the Central Bank of Nigeria by the Governor, Godwin Emefiele, as part of his ploy to retain his job.

President Buhari promised to do things differently and, for that reason, cannot afford to continue in the old ways that have brought the country only underdevelop­ment, disunity and disrepute. Years ago, it was Plateau State, a place once prided as the safest and most clement State in Nigeria but now, the activities of the herdsmen have succeeded in turning it into a nightmare. Even the indigenes of Plateau State are now scared of travelling home. Days ago, it was Agatu. A little before Agatu, Ga­briel Suswam as Governor and his convoy were nearly wiped out by herdsmen in Benue State. And now, it is Ugwuleshi, Enugu State and the arrest of the 76 farmers. Nobody knows where next and the dimension it would take with the abduction of a catholic priest, fresh attacks on Agatu and more communities in Enugu State only days ago.

The arrest and detention of the Ugwuleshi 76 at the Umuahia Prisons raises many posers. They were said to have been arrested by soldiers and taken to Zone 9 Police Command in Umuahia. The army denied involvement, insisting that those involved could be fake sol­diers. If indeed the soldiers were fake, how come the Police inci­dented the case? First Information Reports (FIR) supplied by a com­plainant is so vital that without it, the authenticity of a case is dead on arrival, in criminal matters. Yet, fake soldiers handed over as many as 76 arson suspects to the Police and the Police accepted them and permitted the fake soldiers to go away. It brings up also the kind of policing going on in the country.


Let us even for a moment ac­cept they were arrested by genuine soldiers. Their offence was protest­ing the alleged abduction of two of their women and destruction of their crops by herdsmen and Government response was to only charge them in two Magistrate Courts on a five-count charge bor­dering on arson and illegal posses­sion of dangerous weapons while allowing their attackers to operate freely.

The Land Use Act vests the ownership of lands in Nigeria in the State Governments. That ex­plains why State Governments and the FCT constantly demolish illegal structures on lands not of­ficially allocated and without ap­proved building plans. Why then should the shanty settlements of the herdsmen be treated as though they are officially allocated and their building plans approved by the State Governments?

What is more, why would Gov­ernments wait for the conflicts between herdsmen and farmers to escalate to the point where farmers would have to attack and destroy such settlements and herdsmen forced to fight back in reprisal? What are State Governments re­ally there for? Why can’t they cre­ate ranches and make money off them and ban roaming of animals in their domains? They have the constitutional powers to do so. But can they?

Nigerians are aware that these wimpy Governors are scared stiff, especially now that the President is himself, a Fulani. But they do not need to live in trepidation or act belligerently. Governors do not need to ban herdsmen in their States. They lack the constitutional right to do so but certainly have the powers to regulate their activities. Governors can, therefore, engage Mr. President constructively and together they can arrive at the route to peace. In other words, these in­cessant murders and arsons as a re­sult of herdsmen-farmers’ clashes are a failure of governance. The families who lost loved ones and properties due to the inactions of Governments in this regard should seek legal redress in Nigerian and international courts for the crimi­nal negligence and dereliction of duty.

Equally important, the oppor­tunities being discounted in settled animal husbandry are enormous. The system of ruminants (cattle, sheep and goats) husbandry in Nigeria draws herdsmen from up to a dozen countries in West Af­rica who cross the borders through the bushes without visas and fight together from country to country. For very strange reasons, Govern­ment after Government have all been afraid to replace the time-worn method of nomadism and roaming of animals with ranching system of keeping animals in re­stricted environments.

The ongoing carnage and de­struction being perpetrated against local communities across the country by the herdsmen just have to stop. The tepidity and indiffer­ence of the Government have to stop also. Though long before the Buhari administration, the herds­men have been murdering inno­cent Nigerians with impunity and there have been hardly any pros­ecutions.

The overarching reason the President has to speak up and act decisively now is this: Boko Haram, presently regarded as the world number one most danger­ous terror organization and the Fulani herdsmen, considered the fourth, have a good chance of forming a deadly symbiotic rela­tionship to yield up a more danger­ous terrorist force to the fulfillment of Governor Kashim Shetima’s prophesy that a group worse than Boko Haram is coming. Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has also raised the alarm days ago that another dan­gerous group - “Gausiyya” - has already emerged in Kaduna.

Bukola Saraki was receiving monthly salaries from the Kwara state government even after he became a senator, Michael Wetkas, an EFCC detective has said.

While giving his testimony at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) on Wednesday, Wetkas claimed that Saraki was receiving monthly salaries from June 2011, when he left office as governor of Kwara state, to August 2015 while he was a senator.

“In the course of our investigation, we wrote to Access Bank for them to give us details of the salary account of the defendant. The salary that was coming into the account was N254, 212 as of 1 August 2007.

“As of June 3, 2011, the salary was N291, 124. On July 4, there was another payment with the narration Kwara State Government (KSG) June 2011 salary. The amount was N572, 286.

“On August 29, 2011, there was another payment in the sum of N744, 002 from the Kwara state government.

“On September 29, 2011 there was another payment of N743, 942 with the narration salary payment from KSG.

“On October 27, 2011, there was another payment of N1, 165, 468 for salary.

“In November 2011, there was payment of the same amount. The narration was December pension.

“On February 1, 2012, there was payment of the same amount with the narration for pension.

“The salary payments stopped in this account on August 31, 2015. The defendant left office on May 29, 2011, he became senator in the same.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Wetkas had detailed how Saraki allegedly used fictitious names to launder billions of naira.


Testifying against the senate president at the CCT, the EFCC detective said, among many other revelations, that Abdul Adama, one of Saraki’s personal assistants, made transaction 50 times into the former governor’s account in a single day, broken down to N600,000 and N900,000 on each occasion.

He added that “after that, one Ubi made a lodgment on the same day about 20 times in the same range of N600,000 and N900,000.”

On Wednesday, Wetkas also alleged that the senate president made corruptly obtained cash deposits of $10,000 18 times in one day, into his account with Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB).

For example the Methodist Bishop of Onitsha, Bishop B.L. Onuagha, in his address to mark the 14th annual Diocesan Synod of the Church, which was reported in the Sun Newspaper yesterday, lamented the plight of his Igbo kinsmen at the hands of the Fulani militants and herdsmen of Nigeria.
He concluded his address by advocating the break up of the country. Bishop Onuagha is a highly respected and much loved cleric. He does not speak lightly and neither does he suffer fools gladly.
He is a man that must be taken very seriously.
If people like him are advocating the break-up of our country and calling for the establishment of Biafra then there really must be a problem and those that are in power had better sit up.
The Bishop spoke his mind on the state of the Nigerian nation and noted that the amalgamation of 1914 "has not favoured the Igbo" appealing to world leaders to listen to the south-east and break up “this monster called amalgamation.”
He said that since the amalgamation was not working in the interest of the components of the federation that the best option should be to dissolve it based on the fact that "a section of the country is suffering enslavement".
The Bishop cited the activities of the Fulani cattle herdsmen who he said "had displaced communities, killed, maimed and burgled the people with impunity whilst our government remains complacent".
He said, "amalgamation has brought about the erosion of human dignity, the enslavement of a section of the people in the name of one Nigeria. This deadly monster has led to the loss of millions of lives of Igbo and no one is talking about the genocide. Yes, our culture and that of those in question are not the same. Our language is not the same, our customs, our tradition, our faith and our education are not the same. Our values are at variance. Then, why must we be forced to be in a marriage that we do not want and we see that it is not favorable?”
He concluded by saying that he was not surprised that a group was crying for separation from the ''unholy marriage forced on Nigeria by the British government in 1914''. Bishop Onuagha has said it all and spoken the hearts and minds of many throughout the country.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has slammed the security agencies for the arrest of 76 Igbo villagers from Ugwuneshi
Autonomous community, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State following a clash between the natives
and Fulani herdsmen.

Miffed by the action, Fayose said: “It has gotten to a level that lovers of
peace in Nigeria must speak out against this keg of gunpowder which is the threat that the Fulani herdsmen have become.”

About 76 men from the Ugwuneshi Autonomous community were last
Thursday arrested and whisked away by “men in military uniform” after
they protested the continued destruction of their crops and farmlands
by Fulani herdsmen and their cattle who settled in the area without
permission.

In his official reaction to the alleged arrest, Governor Fayose, who
spoke through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said President Muhammadu Buhari should address the killing
of Nigerians and destruction of farmlands by the Fulani herdsmen.

The governor, who called for the immediate and unconditional release
of the 76 Igbo villagers, said the President Buhari’s All
Progressives Congress (APC) federal government must not give
impression that the Fulani herdsmen were lords in other people’s
lands.

Fayose said the Fulani herdsmen were giving impression that
they now own Nigeria and could perpetrate any crime and get away with
it.

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday dismissed an application by leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra and founder of Radio Biaf‎ra, Nnamdi Kanu, for the release of certain items, including his British and Nigeria passports, which are in the custody of the Department of State Service.

Justice James Tsoho dismissed the application made orally by Kanu’s lawyer, Mr. Chuks Muouma (SAN), who had sought the release of the items because they would not be needed by the prosecution since they were not listed as part of exhibits to be tendered.

Apart from the passports, other items which Muouma sought to be released to the IPOB leader who is currently in detention at Kuje prison along with his two co-accuse, are cash sums of $2,200 and N87,000.

Justice Tsoho, in dismissing the application for lacking in merit, insisted that the fact that the items were not listed as possible exhibits did not foreclose the possibility of their being later used by the prosecution as exhibits.

‎He then adjourned the case till February 19 for the hearing of an application by the prosecution for protection of its witnesses.

The judge, before adjourning the case, granted the request by the defence lawyer to the effect that relations of the accused persons be allowed in the court room subject to security screening and the capacity of the court room.

Kanu, David Nwawusi and Benjamin Madubugwu are being prosecuted on six counts of treasonable felony, unlawful possession of firearms and other offences bordering on their agitation for secession ‎of the Republic of Biafra from Nigeria.

‎Justice Tsoho had on January 29 denied bail to Kanu and the two other defendants and ordered that they remained on remand pending the period of their trial.

The judge in rejecting the accused persons’ bail application, held that they were not entitled to bail as they failed to challenge the allegation by the prosecution that they would continue to commit the alleged crime for which they were being prosecuted if granted bail.

Kanu was in the custody of the Department of State Service from the time of his arrest in a Lagos hotel on October 14, 2015 till January 20, 2016, when he was transferred to prison by an order of Justice Tsoho , shortly after he was arraigned along with two others.
