ROME — The suit had to go. Michael Phelps made the decision Wednesday night after warming up for the final of the 200-meter butterfly at the swimming world championships.

All summer Phelps has been defending his decision to wear the suit of his sponsor, Speedo, over other manufacturers’ models made of less permeable, more buoyant material.

His loss Tuesday in the 200 freestyle to Paul Biedermann of Germany, who finished four seconds behind him in the Olympic final last year, was so untenable it prompted Phelps’s coach, Bob Bowman, to float the idea of Phelps’s boycotting future international events until racing suits are returned to a state of being relatively equal.

Against that backdrop, Phelps slipped out of his Speedo full-body LZR Racer because it felt too tight and into a waist-to-ankle version of the same model. Then he went out and reached the one goal that eluded him last year in his run of eight gold medals in Beijing. Phelps became the first man to swim the 200 butterfly in under 1 minute 52 seconds with a clocking of 1:51.51.

“That’s about what I wanted to go a year ago,” said Phelps, who won the gold in Beijing in 1:52.03. “To be able to do it with about six months of training shows me that there’s possibly still more in the tank.”

Phelps’s loyalty to a swimsuit that many people now consider inferior should not be too surprising. He has had the same coach, Bowman, since he was 12, the same prerace routine since he was 13, and has stuck with the 200 butterfly, a backbreaking event, since making his first Olympic team in the event in 2000, at age 15.

Earlier this summer, after it became apparent that the new wave of swimsuits was building to a tsunami that would wipe out the record books, Bowman considered asking Phelps, 24, to try out one of the new suits.

“Honestly, I had a temptation to put it on him in practice,” Bowman said, “just so I would know for sure in my mind what the difference was. But then I thought no, because once he finds out it might just create a conflict.”

Phelps, a 14-time Olympic champion, may be the Michael Schumacher of swimming. But his sport was never intended to be like Formula One racing, in which competitors hop from sponsor to sponsor in search of the fastest equipment.

Until recently, all suits were, more or less, created equal, and so success in swimming was driven largely by that which could not be bought or bartered: talent, training and tenacity.

The fabric of competition changed last year with the introduction of performance-enhancing suits containing polyurethane. Phelps’s record was one of six global marks to fall on the fourth day of competition at the Foro Italico outdoor pool. In 32 events, 21 world records have fallen.

Mary DeScenza became the first athlete to set a world record in the preliminaries when she recorded a 2:04.14 in the 200 butterfly.

DeScenza wore one of the polyurethane suits, the Jaked 01, with the logo covered because she is sponsored by a rival swimwear company. She qualified second in the semifinals at night with a 2:04.33.

Federica Pellegrini of Italy lowered her day-old record in the 200 freestyle to win her second individual gold.

Phelps’s loss Tuesday set off a chain reaction that called to mind a multicar pileup. There was the threat issued by Bowman, of course. And on Wednesday morning, a member of the United States women’s team — no doubt wondering how she was supposed to succeed in last year’s suits when the seemingly invincible Phelps could not — hunted down Mark Schubert, the general manager of United States Swimming, and pleaded for one of this year’s models.

“It’s chaos,” Schubert said. “I have swimmers running around in the hallway asking if they have different suits to try on between heats and finals.”

The whiff of desperation was particularly strong in the seventh heat of the men’s 100-meter freestyle preliminaries, where two swimmers were disqualified for wearing a second suit underneath their racing suit to trap air and increase their buoyancy.

The morning swims in the event were exceedingly fast. The 16th time — the cutoff to advance to the semifinals, was a 48.43 — which would have tied for the gold medal at these championships in 2007.

Drastic time improvements like that were the catalyst for Bowman’s threat, which got back to Cornel Marculescu, the executive director of FINA, the sport’s international governing body. He met with Schubert, at Schubert’s request, Wednesday morning. “He said he hoped I would talk to Michael and assure Michael that this issue would be settled,” Schubert said.

Phelps said that he left the pool Tuesday night feeling frustrated but that he did not let his feelings fester. “I’ve got a bunch of friends that texted me last night and were like, ‘If you want to call me and just yell into the phone and get some frustration out, I have no problems listening,’ ” Phelps said, adding: “It was cool just being able to let some emotion out. I think that definitely helped.”

He slept well and felt well rested for Wednesday’s challenge. The pool deck was charged with electricity as Phelps walked to the blocks with the other 200 butterfly finalists, curiosity pulling people out of their seats. They wanted to see if his loss Tuesday night was an anomaly or the start of a superstar’s decline.

Phelps went out fast — he was under his world-record pace from the first 50 — and though his arms grew heavy the last 25 meters, nobody was within a length at the finish. Pawel Korzeniowski of Poland was second with a 1:53.23.

Michael Phelps is a hardworking athlete, a dedicated swimmer and a model sportsman. Forget the pot issue leading up to his bad, h's accomplishments makes us forget how young he is. Even in the light of technological doping, he's still the best. If you still think he's a phony, then you really have some sould searching to do.

Michael Phelps may quit over swimsuit row

Michael Phelps should stay out of international competition until swimming's governing body FINA sorts out the chaos over swimsuits, according to his coach.

FINA has agreed to ban performance-enhancing polyurethane suits next year after a glut of world records but said the new rules may not come into effect until April or May.

Phelp's' coach Bob Bowman said: "He might do some local meets, but as far as trying to do anything during this (time) frame on this level, I think he'll be waiting. Enough is enough. I mean, come on."

He added: "This move to do it in April is unacceptable. It needs to happen January 1 if not next Monday."

Bowman said Phelps, who won a record eight Olympic gold medals last year and has sparked an upsurge of interest in the sport, had agreed "things should happen sooner rather than later".

Phelps was beaten in the 200metre freestyle final by Germany's Peter Biedermann, who broke Phelps's world record wearing an all-polyurethane suit.

Asked about staying out of future competitions, Phelps said he would abide by FINA's rules but Bowman made the decisions about where he would compete.

The new suits "have changed the sport completely. Now, it's not swimming. Now, the headlines are about who's wearing what suit," he said.

"FINA are going to make the decision, I can't make it for them. I'm going to finish the meet here and get ready for next year and for the London Olympic Games in 2012."
