Detergent here in uk can be very annoying, expensive and also a waste of money.
I had the same experience when we got here, I had to convince my wife that we should stop buying detergent and use dish washing liquid instead. It works perfectly well, cleans clothes with nice fragrance, cheaper and last longer than detergent.
There is a particular one she prefers which is "fairy" (I believe I got the name right) because it foams better.
Give it a try and let's know your thoughts.

Be careful about using dish washing liquid in your washing machine, it could foam up and get into places it’s not meant to, thereby damaging your machine. Have you tried using the tablet detergents with conditioner? I find they work very well. Also increase the temperature a bit and do a pre wash.

You my friend understands how the tax works, the problem with the newbies is the like to jump into conclusion without properly analysing the whole fact. Another fact is this two people might work in same place earn same 24k per year but mr A might take home more than Mr B cos of tax codes. Back in the early and late 200os you get a cheque back cos you have been overtaxed cos your tax code was based on BR 20% but these days HMRC have upgraded instead of returning your overtaxed money the simply adjust your tax code to reflect the money they owe you.

Did you bother to read the question I responded to? It’s not about tax code or rate, but whether tax and NIC are deducted from the first salary or if there is a ‘grace period’ before the taxman wields the big stick.

It depends on your tax code, if you started work after the tax year has begun and you have got M1 after your code e.g 1200L M1 you will be taxed on a monthly basis but if your tax code is simply 1200L it will be accumulated until you have earned more than your personal allowance.

You never signed for your parcel, so it wasn’t delivered to you instead it was placed in front of your door where other people apart from you have got access to. Contact the supplier and tell them you haven’t received your parcel. This is the reason people have cctv at their front.
I remember a time that I was expecting a parcel, all of a sudden I received an email that they tried to deliver it but no one was home. I phoned the company (ups). I didn’t argue with them, I just told them that I’ve been home, my place is so quiet that you can hear a pin drop, my door bell didn’t ring and it’s not faulty. Then I dropped the stinker “ just to let you know that I have got ring doorbell cctv” immediately the lady told me that the driver will be with me within the next 30mins. Within the next 20mins the door bell went the driver dropped the parcel and ran off before I could question him.

Our old house (about 90 years old) has an EPC of B. Mainly because we gutted and renovated it. It's reasonably easy enough to check those things before one buys. Agents have to provide an EPC certificate anyway. My FIL's house is over 200 years old and very warm - it's too hot in the summer although to be fair, it's cold in February but we love it! It's been completely renovated and well insulated.

Be that as it may, I'd actually take a large old house with proper garden space with a lower EPC over a newer smaller house in an estate with a higher EPC.

Other people may prefer a newer home, warmer home, close to transport links home. It's all choice really at the end of the day.

PS - I didn't quite answer your question. We have underfloor heating throughout the ground floor (wooden flooring), have an open fire with heat transfer upstairs as well, we lined the walls when it was being renovated, changed to double glazed windows (the original windows were single glazed), all rooms have radiators and we insulated the loft (lined and completed battened down).

However, I do absolutely hate new builds. Like from the very bottom of my heart full on hate them . So that bias will always seep through.

Maybe one of these days you will tell us the story of your fallout with New builds.

I think when it comes to new builds in terms of the size of the rooms and gardens, it depends on the developers. They are like super markets. You get the low value no frills and the high end. The low value developers like Barrats or Whimpey and the high value ones like Tilia, Bloor and David Daniels etc.

Apart from the energy saving, the thought of moving in without having to do much to the property. For the garden, you have got a blank canvas to work with. You can buy and plant your own trees and design your garden however you wish. I am happy to pay a small premium for this.

That’s what this forum is all about. You get the pros and cons of a question. If you don’t want people’s advice, then don’t ask a question on the forum. You will be amazed on how people have changed, their decisions based on advice from this forum. No advice is useless. Generally most people give advice based on their on experience or situation and I believe in good faith. You have got the choice to take it or leave it. Telling people to mind their business is very rude especially when you brought your business here. You can’t eat your cake and still have it.

I used to live in Radstock about 12 years ago and taught in the local secondary school. I got no end of weird and bizarre questions. I was the only black person in that town of about 5k people. There was an Indian family too and that was it. People would ask how I can speak such fluent English - if I was in a bad mood, I'd usually tell them to go study British history and they'll know why, could they sniff my hair, touch my skin, do we have lions, sleep in huts, did I like having a bed at home etc. Sometimes, I patiently answer all the questions - no be me carry myself go live for bush?

During my very first OFTSED inspection, I was teaching the Access to Health Dip discussing about people migration and how it affects health outcomes - ie language barriers, new illnesses etc. One of the girls (she was 18/19 ish) said, 'We don't want dirty immigrants bringing new illnesses. They take our jobs and they want to infect us too?'

I responded, 'Dirty immigrants? Am I dirty?' She was shocked and said, 'But Miss, you're not an immigrant. You speak English, you work, you're our tutor!' She could not comprehend how I was possibly an immigrant.

The lesson took a side step into different forms of immigration, how it affects places negatively and positively and I had to pull up stats etc about immigrant Drs, nurses, teachers, engineers (basically to show that we're not bottom feeders) and then linked back to health outcomes. The lesson over ran by almost 45 minutes. The inspector stayed through out the lesson. We talked about Windrush, Irish and Italian migration (they were shocked about that as well). I scored an outstanding grade and till date, it's my only outstanding grade in all my teaching years
These were children from reasonably middle class families and they had zero clue. Many of them were actually very racist in that lesson but it was a teaching moment so I used it as one. They at least all walked away with a better knowledge and awareness of what not to say and do!

Now imagine that session was run by someone who 1. had no experience of immigration, immigrants and racism and 2. didn't want to derail their lesson because frankly if it was another inspector, I may well have failed that observation and affected the over score of the school.

As far as I'm concerned, people are inherently good. Doesn't make them not racist

I can't even begin to recount my conversations with my in laws. The only person who has not goofed in that family is my youngest sister in law and she is very, very well travelled which explains it. They do love me very much but mehn...

Most of the kids repeat in class what is said in their homes but I think the younger ones and the well traveled are more enlightened and some of them may even enlighten their parents. Good on you. Takes a lot of patience to teach in this country.

This is like saying let's commit more crimes so the police will have work to do! Good people are also very racist. My mother in law is a prime example. All research shows that children know, see and acknowledge differences in others. They just have not imbibed the social norms and indoctrination of acting on or using those differences to either accept or exclude people. They learn that from the families and communities.

Racism is going nowhere - not in our lifetime and likely not in that of our children either and we better prepare our children to deal with it otherwise it will stymie them.

My white friend once told me she was at a family party and her niece was playing with a black kid, she then licked her finger and rubbed it on the black girl’s skin to see if her colour would rub off. This was just two innocent kids playing together. Her niece has not been exposed to black kids apart from on the telly, so she was curious like most young kids.

The bitter truth is there are not many people who will leave their family hungry to fight some other person’s cause. They would use social media these days but not go out of their way to the detriment of their own family. A lot of people will say they will do it but when it comes down to it they won’t.
