Volkswagen T-6

• The Concept: This Volkswagen Concept is something that takes technology of the future and puts it in a design of the future.

• The Designer: Alexander Zhukovsky

• The Machine: What would you say about a car that can be a mobile office that combines the functions of a working place with comfort of a business-class car? Sheer awesomeness right, well I think so too! The wheels are removed onto the periphery of the car body and revolve around the two cylinders. Thus the assembling in “T-6” helps to save enough space.

Daedalus Concept by Jonathan Punter

https://www.carbodydesign.com/archive/2006/08/08-daedalus-concept-by-jonathan-punter/Daedalus-Concept-2-lg.jpg

His creation, the Daedalus Concept, has won the Royal College of Art’s Best Overall Concept Car 2006 award and the ‘Best Design Interpretation Award’ at The Pilkington Vehicle Design Awards.

The Daedalus Concept is a futuristic vehicle with a design inspired by natural systems. It has received the Royal College of Art’s Best Overall Concept Car 2006 award.

Jonathn Punter is a 24-years old student at the Royal College of Art’s Masters Vehicle Design course. For his final year project he designed a concept vehicle focusing on a futuristic family car with an interior optimised for social interaction between family members.

Jonathan, who is a Bentley Motors-sponsored student, took four months to perfect the design of his concept car entry which was modelled using Maya from Autodesk and rendered using ARTVPS’ leading edge technology, RenderDrive.

Commenting on the ideas behind his design, Jonathan Punter said: "The aesthetics of my design were based around the idea of natural systems."

"The resulting vehicle is meant to represent the way a flower reacts to environmental conditions. I included seats in the vehicle which rotate to facilitate a family environment and which also maximise an individual’s personal space. Child mobility was also considered with the incorporation of seats that can be removed and used independently of the car."

Audi RSQ

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d7/Audi_study.JPG

Audi RSQ
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Audi RSQ is a mid-engined concept car developed by Audi AG for use as a product placement in the 2004 sci-fi film I, Robot. It is meant to depict a technologically advanced automobile in the Chicago cityscape from the year 2035.

This sports coupé is a visionary interpretation of Audi's typical automobile design. An important challenge presented to the designers was that despite its extreme character, the car still had to be recognised by the audience as an Audi. To accommodate this demand, the engineers implemented a current Audi front-end design which includes the trapezoidal "Audi Single-Frame Grille", the company's trademark overlapping four rings, and the Multi Media Interface (MMI) driver-to-car control system.[1]

The RSQ also includes special features suggested by film director Alex Proyas.[2] The car uses spheres instead of conventional wheels.[3] Its two reverse butterfly doors are hinged to the C-posts of the body.[1]

Although this kind of collaboration was a first for Audi, a similar project was developed by Lexus for use in the 2002 film Minority Report. [4]

Bridgestone Falcon Concept Car

Automotive Design, Industrial Design, Product Design

Falcon is an innovative concept both "unprecedented'' and dynamic suggesting an elegant synthesis between two worlds - that a car by its front aspect and double rotatable jet propelled engines by its rear aspect. These engines are giving a lot of extra power when you do race, and they push up the rear of vehicle to reach the vertical position for the city mode then they turn off and the vehicle works like a big SEGWAY for using less space on ground to enlarge the parking place for people.

The Gamma Concept is focused on modern materials and the new possibilities given by these, and the car features an extensive use of modern materials such as Polycarbonate and composites. Not only is the emphasis on designing a lighter and more fuel-efficient car, but also to draw an example of how new materials can be applied and make basis for the development of a new visual language. The visual language features large transparent areas to show the underlying structure and engine parts; to remind how the car works and present a more honest (transparent) design, than contemporary car design. All body panels are made from polycarbonate, to keep manufacturing costs at a minimum the panels are shaped using thermoforming, and then glued onto the Carbon-Kevlar reinforced Aluminium chassis.

Linear Motor EV Super Highway concept

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9isV-rX4YMo&feature=player_embedded

Here's an interesting idea. German designer Christian Förg has fleshed out his concept for extended range electric vehicles, without carrying an on-board generator. Put the motor itself in the road. While the vehicle concept may not be to everyone taste, this concept could in fact work with any electric vehicle.

Förg calls it a Speedway Transport System concept. The idea is, around town a car has it's own EV powertrain including motor, inverter and battery, a standard EV. When on the highway the power source is a linear induction motor embedded into the road surface. When the EV is on the linear motor road system the entire powertrain in the EV can either shut down or remain on stand by.

Förg says the linear motor can also charge an electric car’s battery so it’s ready for urban travel. “Only highways for long range distances will need to be upgraded,” he says “But even with this upgrade, the streets still can be used by conventional cars.”

We've seen linear motor systems before, the most successful being the German Maglev train running at 420 km/h in China and also as high powered launch systems for roller coasters. The main factor holding back the widespread adoption of super fast and efficient Maglev trains has been the construction costs of building the track.

A Maglev linear motor track is the world largest electric motor as the stator and motor windings cover the entire length of track. If the Maglev track is 100 km long, then the linear motors stator is 100 km long. With the levitation magnets on the train flying at 400+ km/h (250 mph) just 10 cm away from the motor windings in the track a major expense in constructing Maglevs is the extra engineering required to build and maintain track precision to extremely small tolerances to avoid high speed train to track contact.

In a roadway based propulsion only system with no levitation component this precision requirement in not needed and entirely new structures do not need to be built as the motor is burried in existing roads.

In combination with automated braking, steering and parking technologies already making their way into production cars, this concept could also form the back bone of an automated highway system. With current genertion Maglevs in routine service at 431 km/h (268 mph), able to cruise at up to 580 km/h (362 mph) in testing and with proposed enclosed systems where air resistance is removed being capable of up to 3,500 km/h the future potential is for this type of propulsion system is enormous.

Instead of an internal combustion engine, his vehicle is driven by an electric engine that generates a magnetic field capable of propelling the vehicle down the road!

Caveat first: the MAG car would require that all automotive infrastructure be magnetized in order for it to work, a task well-neigh impossible for any large-scale implementation. However such a system would tremendously reduce the energy required to propel the car, as it’s electromagnetic motor would be calibrated to reduce the car’s weight by 50%. The seats are created by two fabric nets which are adjustable to suit the occupant, and consume a minimum of materials.

The winner of the Unseen Technology Award at the Interior Motives Design Award 2007, the MAG is an extremely futuristic vehicle that requires technologies that are far away from being developed and deployed. Still, it presents a striking concept for future-foward transport that was too intriguing for us to resist."

Nebeuwa: What about Nikola Tesla and Aristotle?
Aristotle got too many things wrong when it came to physics. He came up with ingenious ideas without experimentation/verification to explain phenomena but his explanations turned out to be completely wrong and to have actually hindered progress somewhat. His only really significant scientific contribution was actually just classification in biology. Yet there have been several much greater biologists than Aristotle.

Tesla was very brilliant yes, but we're talking about of all time. He was probably the greatest inventor of the modern era though.

Read my post again. I was replying to the notion that Islamic nations have failed and those who suppressed Islam has done better. But that doesn’t example why Iran an Islamic nation is on the heels of Turkey and ahead of countries like Lebanon, Malaysia or Indonesia.

Also why only use Yemen as an example. Firstly, it better than a lot of African states than speaks volume.

Also why not use Syria, Egypt, Oman, Tunisia, Morocco or Algeria. All these nations for example, they are not Oil rich but are rather developed and modern relatively.
I'm aware of what your post was responding to, but I doubt that Iran is an appropriate counterexample, since there are significant differences between them and several other countries of the Muslim world that could be relevant. There are possible explanations for why Iran has done better in spite of or regardless of being Muslim. In other words, being Muslim could still be holding them back from reaching their full economic/developmental potential but other cultural and political factors could be making up for that and thus the general slant/argument of the opening article would still be valid. I'm not saying that this is necessarily the case, but we have no way of knowing whether this is or is not true.

Also, I was not really agreeing with the article (although the article is about the member countries of the Arab League, it includes some Muslim countries in its analysis that I would not really consider Arab and it also goes on to attack Islam in general). My comments were not really about Islam, but about Arabs. And what is Oman's economy centered around, if not oil and gas? The other countries you listed are not really Arab or are only partially Arab.

PoliticsRe: Kogi Claims Ownership Of Anambra's Oil Wells by PhysicsQED(m):
ndu_chucks: Time to educate folks.

I'm of the opinion that if Anambra state is declared "an oil producing state" because of the oil blocks which gave rise to Orient Petroleum's refinery, then Kogi and a few other states should be declared "oil producing states" as well with all the accompanying benefits.'

The first map below shows Orient Petroleums's oil blocks 915 and 916. Now OPL916 is where their refinery is located. The second map shows an old map of Nigeria which shows the location of the refinery (i.e. OPL916)

As we can see from the maps, OPL915 extends to Kogi state.

we can conclusively state that oil block OPL915 covers the following states:Anambra, Kogi, and Enugu while OPL916 covers Anambra, Edo, Delta, Enugu, and Kogi. Declaring Anambra state "Oil Producing" without according the same rights to the aforementioned states is outright cheating by Mr. President and should be vigorously challenged in court.

My Anambra brothers, Nwanne m, see ya in court. cheesy
Edo and Delta are already oil producing. That's probably why there has been no uproar from the governments of those two states yet - they already have significant oil elsewhere.

Enugu and Anambra have already had some disputes about the oil though:

https://www.nairaland.com/874190/orient-petroleum-oil-blocks-also
https://www.nairaland.com/896185/enugu-community-igga-owns-oil
https://www.nairaland.com/896522/enugu-anambra-war-over-oil

The Kogi state government has a legitimate concern, but they should go about resolving it without creating too much controversy or animosity.

Iran is not Arab and has never been Arab. They are a totally different people culturally and politically. The issue is probably not as simple as just religion.

@ the opening post

I have said several times in real life and on the internet that without oil, most of the Arab world would look like Yemen. And nobody wants their country to look like Yemen.

Just for the record, I don't have any dislike of Newton. The man was one of the greatest geniuses that ever lived. Even two thousand years from now, whenever anyone is compiling a list of the greatest thinkers who ever lived, he would still make the top 5 in the lists of most people that are scientifically literate. Also, quantum mechanics is not really the basis (certainly not mine, anyway) for rejecting the old Newtonian view of time. Perhaps you meant to say relativity. Even Leibniz, Newton's contemporary and a man almost as brilliant as Newton, rejected the Newtonian view of time, as did Ernst Mach in his own time, but it would take Einstein to really replace it.
PoliticsRe: Kogi Claims Ownership Of Anambra's Oil Wells by PhysicsQED(m): 8:56am On Sep 01, 2012
ADint: Hmmm... This could be quite more complex than it looks. Agreed the 2 oil blocks, OPL 915 & 916, straddle a few states but with majority in Anambra. Now the next question is, where exactly within these oil blocks do these oil reservoirs lie? You may drill an oil well in the Anambra side of the oil blocks but the reservoir(s) you are tapping from may actually be predominately in Kogi, Enugu or Edo State and vice versa!!

A good example is lake Chad which is within the territories of Nigeria, Cameroun, Chad and Niger. Approximately 20-25% of lake Chad is in Nigerian territory, but I can sit in the Nigerian section and put a pump into the lake and drain out all the water and claim I got it from my own side! This is obviously because being a liquid virtually all the water in the lake, including those in other countries, would flow towards the Nigerian side as am pumping water out through the Nigerian side and thus give me access to the whole water in Lake Chad! The same scenario plays out with underground oil reservoirs and by their nature being deep underground the exact and precise geographical layout could be difficult to determine within the oil block itself except for where the oil rig or well head is situated.

Another factor could be that the licensee, explorer and producer of these oil blocks, Orient, is owned by Anambra state and its indigenes who are also big stakeholders in the crude oil itself. Its similar to the River state govt owning Shell who are the major oil producing company in the Niger Delta. The only logical solution would be proper, diligent and independent seismic, geographical and other scientific evaluation examination to determine which states/communities these oil/gas reservoirs lie within these 2 blocks and to what extent.

I do highly commend Orient and Anambra state for the bold initiatives and steps they took that led to this discovery and ultimately as the licensee/operator/producer of these oil blocks would still benefit very lucratively same way shell, Chevron are reaping rewards from such actions. Additionally Anambra state would still also benefit from 13% derivation from whatever production is determined to have come from its land.
Interesting post.

Hopefully Kogi and Anambra will resolve the dispute amicably in the near future.

I genuinely think this is a bad idea. Whoever was heading the airline when this decision was made doesn't have much going on upstairs. If the country is majority black, the pilots will be majority black eventually with enough time. Why they think it has to be that way immediately, only 2 decades after apartheid ended, and why they're using racially based policies to achieve that goal in a country with a history of past racial exclusion policies is really puzzling (unless they don't care about embarrassing themselves).
CultureRe: Is Pidgin English From Portuguese? by PhysicsQED(m): 3:06am On Sep 01, 2012
killayut: The name WARRI KINGDOM was not even used at that time. The name WARRI itself was never used then. WARRI became a controversial name when the English came and settled at the NEW WARRI city GRA.. GRA then was European quaters and they chose to live far from the natives. The Itshekiris claim Warri is an adulterated version of Iwere while the Ijaws claim it was from the word Wari meaning family or home. The English came in the 17th century meaning the word WARRI was introduced then and not the Portuguese era. Matter of fact There was no established kingdom of Itshekiri at that time and the OLU was the OLU ITSHEKIRI . So there would not be any history about a man visiting WARRI kingdom at a time when there was no WARRI kingdom. That history is made up or new names used to replace historical names. Who was the Olu Itshekiri during the Portuguese era ?
What would it cost you to do some actual reading on the place and people you want to make so many claims about?

I don't object in principle to the claiming of this or that about history, but don't you think it's a bad approach to put forward claims before reading about and trying to learn about a group or a place rather than after doing so?

To those who have actually done some reading, this approach doesn't look good. Anyway, carry on with your beliefs. I don't think it's really worth it to get dragged into this particular argument.
PoliticsRe: Omotoba And Controversy Over Enugu Airport by PhysicsQED(m): 2:28am On Aug 31, 2012
FSU: Correct. But how do you make the foreign airlines to patronize an international airport other than

(1) persuading them to use the airport, employing some govt fiat/regulation
(2) Sharing the routes among the airlines, so some can use the new airport while others continue with other airports. So creating hubs for certain routes
(3) informing fliers from the area, for whom the airport was built, to patronize the airport thereby indirectly forcing the planes to fly there

The aviation minister, who just happens to be Igbo, took the first two measures and people are complaining and accusing her of tribalism. Can the third measure work?
I don't know if option 3 alone would work for an airport that is just now getting international status. If only that approach was used, it might take a while before foreign airlines do start using it. As for the minister's actions I don't think it's really tribalism. If there is an existing imbalance which has an ethnic/regional pattern, taking measures to balance things out is not really the same as engaging in tribalism. I think there's an important distinction there and I think that if people took more time to think about it, they would see that. Anyway, I hope the issue doesn't become too unnecessarily polarizing.
