Eziachi: In the 80s when Monday Osunbor, Iyamu, Lawrence Anini and their gang were terrorising Easterners going home and making the Old Bendel state a no go area, So Babangida, then as the leader should have been using proxy northern leaders to call on Oba of Benin and others from that area to sort it out because they are making governance difficult for Babangida? When was Lawrence Anini or those other people "terrorizing easterners"? Did he mark out easterners specifically for attack? He was terrorizing all those that were in his area of operation. Just by even trying to frame it like that you're thinking in a heavily sectional manner. It would be like claiming Shina Rambo was specifically terrorizing all Midwesterners that were trying to get to Lagos. Utterly ridiculous. |

Well, they're actually right (Chinese state media, that is). The Chinese relationship with Africa, although far from perfect, is definitely less exploitative than the West's. |
Those people making jokes about skin color are deranged. Are there are no dark skinned people in Nigeria? ![]() Anyway, dumb and pointless beef. |
He made the right choice actually, considering that it was his dream to play for team USA. Osaze Odemwingie made the opposite choice in basically the same situation, but he was in a racist country, so I doubt that he ever seriously considered representing Russia. In Iguodala's case, the idea of who is really an American or representative of America is not limited by skin color or what one's last name sounds like (president Obama being a good example). |
Diigbo affirmed that self-government within Nigeria will secure for the Ogoni people, their indigenous rights, enable them to meet their needs and interests and finally end internal colonialism.Hmmm. . . |
wtf |
EzeUche: It was pathetic to see Nigeria lose that badly.lol, those guys would play for the US. In fact, Iguodala played for the US team against Nigeria. And Iguodala is from Illinois, but his father is from Edo state. |
shymmex: Stupid Charles Barkley elbowed an Angolan player at 1992 olympics despite his team leading by 49 - 1 smh..Barkley is a goon. He's pretty funny off the court though and I do enjoy watching his antics. |
I posted this in another thread in this section, but I might as well re-post it: Beating a team by a huge number of points and not just quitting when you're far ahead of the other team is pretty much standard in the NBA when a blowout does happen. It's just that usually, complete blowouts don't happen. Also, see here: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_largest_points_victory_in_NBA_history Answer:This is nothing unheard of. There have been blowout games before. |
Beating a team by a huge number of points and not just quitting when you're far ahead of the other team is pretty much standard in the NBA when a blowout does happen. It's just that usually, complete blowouts don't happen. If there's a clear winner and no chance for the other team to come back, the winning team and the losing team don't stop playing seriously until about 1 minute or 30 seconds before the 4th quarter buzzer goes off. I think part of the motivation for it is to increase/improve their individual player and team statistics with easy scoring. |
ekt_bear: @Physics: Whether she knows Wade or not personally is irrelevant. This is not a board meeting. This is not an office setting, or any sort of professional setting.I have a totally different opinion so we'll have to just agree not to agree then. |
ekt_bear: Physics: It obviously has nothing to do with whether anyone expected Nigeria to win or not. It's not the same thing because, to the best of my knowledge, she doesn't have the kind of relationship with Wade that you have with your friends. And the offensiveness of a joke does not always depend on whether the trash talker was trying to be factual. Look at this joke (I've seen it elsewhere before, but don't remember where exactly it's from) from antitpiah's/fstranger's signature on this forum: "I am undecided about abortion: On one hand I support it because it is killing children. On the other, it gives women a choice" Obviously he is not being serious, but should he ever address this joke to a person whose child has been murdered or who has a relative whose child has been murdered? It's just basic human decency not to make those kind of jokes. |
I'm all for freedom of speech, but some people are so immature on the internet that I sometimes wonder whether there shouldn't be an exam one has to pass to prove that they're not a dumbass before they're allowed to use any bandwidth. |
ekt_bear: the funny thing is i say (jokingly) anti-semitic things to my Jewish friend all the timeThis is clearly not the same kind of thing though. ![]() This was just dumb. Nigeria didn't have a chance here to begin with so I don't know why anyone is acting up over this bad loss. It's just strange. |
Did he really say something as offensive as "drop the slave mentality" anywhere in his actual speech? ![]() Or was it just lousy Nigerian journalists at work again? |
wiegraf: ^^^^Well, for a not heavily mathematical explanation of general relativity, you can actually go straight to a book written by the originator of general relativity himself: Albert Einstein - Relativity: The Special and General Theory http://www.bartleby.com/173/ The theory as he worked it out originally in his papers is quite mathematics heavy but he presented a much less mathematically involved explanation in that book. This book is in the public domain and is available in many other places online. A great cosmology book (with basically no equations or math, but lots of helpful drawings to visualize things) is Black Holes and Time Warps by Kip Thorne. He also provides a lot of history and context for all of the ideas that were developed and why certain ones were rejected or accepted. It's a really great read although the focus is on black holes in particular. There are also two books (also non-mathematical) by two science writers that discuss current ideas in astronomy and cosmology that I read some years back that I would recommend: Marcia Bartusiak - Thursday's Universe (1986) Timothy Ferris - The Whole Shebang: A State-of-the-Universe Report (1997) Both were really good reads. On the ask a physicist thing, probably you could start a general thread where input from those with knowledge in chemistry, pure math, astronomy, biology, and/or physics etc. could answer questions. I might answer some. Oh yeah, and why do you loathe math? |
Another video that's a bit informative about current ideas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPuhJ98VjoA&feature=fvwrel |
Yeah, the cyclical universe theory is popular with some physicists (for example, Roger Penrose, one of the most important theoretical physicists of his generation). Once again, I'm not a cosmology guy, but just looking at the theory on the surface, I don't accept it. I'd need a stronger rationale to accept it than what's currently around. Here's Penrose talking about his view of the cyclic universe idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEIj9zcLzp0 |
