I'm a Niger-Deltan but I don't support that FG should give them money,instead the federal govt should start cleaning up the mess the region has becoming since the discovery of oil;clean it up and develop the place. That is where they make the money they used to make Lagos and abuja what they are today,but Niger-Delta has nothing to show for it;its like using and dumping someone after getting what you wanted from that person.

Amina mohammed has made giant strides in the clean up of tge Niger delta and clean up is to beging june2...where was tge NDA when GEJ was in power? Or the did the environmental degredation just start? Did the oil wells just got awarded? I smell Nepotism when i look at the case of the NDA
Oil is a curse and Buhari should take the issues of pipeline bombing in good faith, its time we rest Nigeria. Japan dosnt have oil but is more developed than Saudi arabia and russia. Singapore cant be compared..
We all need to take this in good faith.

Can you compare the population of this countries to the population of the SE? We are talking about 55-60million Igbos trapped between Nigeria and Niger delta. Lots of money would be wasted to import and export duties charged by Nigeria snd ND. There is nothing like having an acces to the sea and having countrol over your own airspace

Its not a welcomed developement, If Niger delta succed they would effectively landlock Biafra. Biafra would depend on Niger delta and Nigeria for importation and exportation . We would just start a war that we would keep on fighting after ending one.

Militants say they want true and fiscal federalism restored to Nigeria., or at least, greater increase in the percentage for derivation.

Some of the militants even want Niger delta republic.

Some want release of President Buhari's political prisoners, Nnamdi Kanu and Ibrahim Dasuki.

So it's palliative giving mere contract to protect oil facilities.

With this short term solution, new militants must surely spring up tomorrow to ask for their own deal

There is no permanent solution, We just need a temporary one to enable the Govt diversify its sources of income. Common tomoatoe shortage and we are all crying, thats shows the potential of agriculture which is just one negleted sector. Solid minerals, Taxation, ICT, Agriculture would lead the way and we can once and for all look at the past when oil held us to ransom and smile.
We need a President, We have not had a president since inception. Why should 170million people rely on just 2.4million barrels of oil daily. Its stupid and short sighted and oil is slowly loosing relevance with the emergence of new renewable energy.
Oil has brought nothing but distruction and death.
Today the militants might be the problem but in the near future the oil itself would be come the problem.
This is a blessing in Disguise to Nigeria and PMB should accept it in good faith.

Two issues are playing on my mind:

1.) Weather: If those things were made of the White Foam used in Electronics packaging (but l doubt, maybe a more stabilized grade that is thicker, heavier and more stable) .... then it means over a few years, it could actually degrade and pulverise?
How easily replaceable are they, in your build/placement techniques?


2.) Flammability: Chemical properties of this product makes it fall into the category of highly combustible materials (its a petro-chemical by-product).
Now, assume there is a small fire at the base of a building or even the next building ........ do you think my Parapet would not just melt-away from the HEAT, even before the offending house gets burnt?
It wont be funny if they put out the fire from the next house, before any appreciable damage has been done, ...... only to find that the neighbours Polysterene Parapet has melted completely!

When i spoke on phone with my client during the design of this building you are constructing, he made a comment i hold on to. In his words "WE CAN ONLY REBUILD NIGERIA BY TRUSTING EACH OTHER" I didn't meet him in person till date. Its all via nairaland. I believe so many have done designs without meeting the client for once. Currently am doing a turnkey project of a family house(a kind of two semi-detached duplex) in Abia State for a nairalander abroad. Materials and labour are all mine but there are still layers of supervisors/monitoring spirits placed openly and secretly whom i carry along even when all the money is "breathing" in my account l. I understand why it is so. First i havent met this guy before and its an online thing so trust is an issue. If i come down to Owerri for weekend i receive call from abroad saying "i learnt you are not in the site" but i give reasons that will justify my absence and also assure him am not running away with his money. What am i saying, my brother its an honour and previllege plus favour from God to have someone who doesnt know you, who probably has a closer friend that does what you do give you a job whether it is labour or purchase of materials and labour. Whatever be the friction in the relationship which should be serviced by trust should not reflect in your tone of reporting the progress of the project. Try as much as possible to manage the relationship as it may not end with this project. Thanks

The trust issue should be thrown around betwen the client and his supervisors incharge of material procurement. We are only incharg of supervision and workmanship which was pre-agreed from foundation to roof before commencement.We are 100% sure of the Quality of Job we can do based on our Educational background in Civil Engineering(second class ipper division and 1st class honours Bsc,Futminna) and prior experince.The client supervisors on ground can attest to the quanlity job being delivered.
Since their is a Project manager/procurement officer with responsibilities of material procurement and general Project manageing, i am compelled to point out gray areas and advice on how to make the process more effective because any lapses on his part affect my abilities to carry out my contractual responsibilities.
You can classify it has friction in the relationship but without friction your pile foundation would never hold.

Back to the project. We resumed work yesterday morning after the brief delay we are on course to finish the lintel today.The weather is not on our side but hopefully we finish up today.

@podosci.....it's like a norm in Nigeria for most clients to make a few alterations to their plans when the construction is going on BUT it now depends on the builder to know if the foundation in place can accommodate such alterations. I have made alterations to my own build several times but I always seek the consent of the builder because in this case, he is the one that is meant to be the professional.
Hardly anyone can claim to be innocent of this regard.

Some client make silly alterations like removing a colunm or removing a beam.. Some go further to add 2 more floors to the existing one. Its the engineers that go along with it that should be blamed.

@brabus...when you take on a build and you advice a client to do something and he refuse. You should always allow the client to sign a document clearly stating that you are excluded from the ramifications of his decision. This will save you from a lot of problems in future.

BRABUS, FOR THE FACT THAT YOU DIDN'T ENSURE THAT THE CLIENT SIGN'S SUCH AN AGREEMENT TO EXONERATE YOU, ALL BLAME POINTS TO YOU. LEGALLY, AS IN THIS CASE...YOU ARE THE BUILDER AND YOU ARE TO BLAME

Many client and Builders are guilty of this, There must be a signed agreement between the client and the builder. Any changes to the drawing should also involke a singed aggrement. This to avoid future disputes.
We are all learning and in the future no builder/client should start a project without a legallt binding aggrement detailing all the terms of both the client and builder.

A simple geothecnic test would have revealed the soil bearing capacity, settlement rate, soil profile and water level, The geothecnic Engineer would have specified a foundation type after considering economy and durability. The test wouldnt have cost upto N150,000 - N200,0000 and saved both the client and the builder the stress.
I recommend in the future, Builders and clients should put it in writing that a soil test was not performed and the builders/structural engineers are not responsible from any eventual settlement of the soil leading to eventual failure of the house. According to barry in his book (construction of buildings Volume 1) he states that engineers usually overdesign foundations to avoild being sued by the clients for settlement of their houses.
Foundation is a wide subject that encompasses both the soil that withstands the load of the strucutre and the Reinforced concrete /Plain concrete layed on the soil. There are different types of foundation and every foundation was created to cater for different soil conditions. Apart from the common strip, raft, pile and pad, there are other specialized foundations done for special purposes like i read about an adjustable foundation in australia where you can use hydraulic pumps to raise the level of your house once its has settled considerably.
RAFT Foundation is a spread foundation that involves escavating the soil down to a part of the soil profile a soil with suitable beraing capacity can be met. And its with that bearing capacity that the RAfT foundation is designed uppon. Most properly done Raft have a basement due to the dept of the excation.
Any raft built without a soil test means the raft was not designed. Not designing your raft foundation is like walking on glass without shoes. There are different types of raft (not 1 board, 2 board). Each type depends on the load of the srructure and the bearing capacity for design.
PIle foundation from your soil test if you discover the dept of your firm strata is far down into ground and excavating that debt to lay your raft foundation would be uneconomical or unsafe then you opt for a pile foundation.
A Pile foundation works on two priciples, first principle is fiction between the pile and the soil. Second is drilling your pile into the ground until you meet a firm strata.

Ecocomy and structural intergrity is considered before any foundation type is selected. All foundation are designed to carry an estimated amount of load based on a specific bearing capacity. Even the strip foundation is designed to determine the width and thickness of the strip.

I have also read a research thesis which a conclusion that the strength of concrete increases considerably with the size of the couarse aggregrate and reaches a peack strength at course aggregrate size of 20mm but the strength starts to decsend with further increase in the size of the agregrate beyond 20mm.
They gave a reason which stated that the larger the course aggregrate, the more void spaces are fromed in between the course aggregate and leads to further weakening of the concrete.
Apart from a large water cement ratio reducing the srtength of the concrete, The permeability of concrete increases with an increase in water cement-ratio.
Alot of factors affect the strength of concrete.

Work has come to halt this morning because the supervisors on ground have been unable to get clarrification and authorization from the supervisor in lagos for the purchase of materials ( Wood, nails, blocks).
Hopefully the clarrification and authorization would come intime for work to continue today.

Bayelsa states has been unable to meet up its salaries obligation for some time now for reasons only the state government can explain because it ought not to owe salaries, now immagine the money coming into the federal govt becomes smaller, meaning the money going to Bayelsa state too reduces.
How in the world do you now expect Bayelsa to pay salaries? Children from Bayelsa would go hungry, elderly men would go hungry, poverty leads to a rise in petty crime.
Look at the bigger picture, The north is not the problem
From inception of Nigeria, they have been living in perpetual poverty even thou most of our leaders are from there. How do you explain this?
Simple.
Leeaders feom North, South, west and east are the problem. The remain friends no matter the false ethnic or religious stupidity that divides the common man. They loot with careless abandunment and dont even ask questions of tribe or religion when the money is shared.

Bonding quality of granite dust has always been questionable. Even in block production, it's advised to mix good sharpsand and dust to achieve maximum strength.
The Ratio is what needs more research.

@miscellanous I'm sure all other factors remained constant while varying sharpsand and dust.?
