Ahj Harem,
Talking and taking action about crimes committed against Nigerian people in every nook and cranny in that country is important for the administration of justice and development of an egalitarian society. But it borders very close to mischief if your intention is to juxtapose state sponsored progrom and genocide with criminality and recklessness. Nevertheless, victim of both deserves mention and survivors, and relative of victims deserves closure.

That is the only way to heal the divides in this country. To pretend like nothing has happened and sweep this issue under the carpet is to postpone the doomsday.

Those who prevent peaceful change inevitably invites violent ones. We should jaw jaw or eventually war war. Whichever way we choose change will happen!

@Dawgpound,
The issue of progrom against people of the old eastern region (igbo, ijaw, efik, ibibio, annangs, etc) and massacre of MidWestern Igbos is a well documented history.

However other victims of the 1967 pre-war progrom, war genocide, and post war humiliation and nationalization most often than not are not willing to talk about it let alone ask for apology or restitution. The Igbo over and over again has been on the vanguard of campaign for closure for victims of the progrom.

Perhaps voices from Ijaws, Efiks, Ibibios, Annangs and other ethnic groups who suffered injustice during those dark era will lend importance and urgency to the fact that the time can never be more perfect than now to discuss the war. The progrom was invariably directed at people from old eastern region, while Igbo bore the largest brunt of these injustices, the intertwined nature of the old eastern people and culture meant that no one was left unscathed.

Time to speak out is NOW!

The official pronouncement is still the necessary first step in building any university. Besides most universities don't start with mega structures, an administration office block and a few classroom is what is symbolically important in starting a university. This can be started on temporary site while work commences at a later date on the permanent site. Things don't always go smoothly in real live.

That said the population of Nigeria is growing, without building new universities, 10 years down the line we will inevitably experience the same problem we are having in the power sector. Hence, the decision to establish more universities can only be said to be with some elements of foresight.

Pukkah et all .
you are not getting the point are you? What exactly would you like the president to do on the Boko Haram issue that he hasn't done or is not doing? Should he raze down NE to prevent more people from dying? What  yardstick are you using to justify the relentless criticism of every hue and cry of the president? What  makes you think he is not doing his job and hence deserves the boot?

It is the inability of various critics to provide this compelling argument in their commentary  that lends credence to the assumption of bigotry and ethnicism in their campaign.

The constant hullabaloo about subsidy removal and the inability to tackle Boko Haram being used as yardstick to adjudge Mr. Preside is grossly unfair let alone the gutter language that graces those myopic criticism.

Mr. President for the avoidance of doubt is doing a very good job with the resources and system at his disposal even in view of the period he has been in power.

Nigeria is a badly messed up country, It is naive to expect a quick fix, at state level let alone federal level.

When Obasanjo was in power for 8 years we witnessed deaths of thousands of Nigerians in the North due to religious violence and also genocides in the Niger-delta but no one called for his impeachment because of that or even planned a vote of no confidence but now with 1 of own Easterner and SS man in particular in power these have grown highly impatient. Its not like he can't do better but I see a double standard.
Don't mind them tribalist; that is what they do here! Haters, and bigots, trying to mask their evil scheming with a 'veil of objectivity'. At least let them use thick veil, not this thin, transparent veil that every keen observer can see through. Who doesn't know how things work in Nigeria. No less 10,000 people died during Obj regime, and like you rightly noted, no one called for his head.

Do they want GEJ to raze down the NE like Obj did Odi, before they can give him credit for being tough on security? Otherwise, I think he is handling the crisis fairly well.

GEJ is not leaving until 2015, the sooner these goons get use to that fact, the better for them!

I wonder why some people waste so much energy hyper-ventilating on GEJ when the truth is that all things considered, he is doing the very best with resources at his disposal.

Those wishing to see the exit of GEJ from the scene are either naive or extremely ignorant. GEJ is not going anywhere until 2015 at the earliest. So look for other things to say. There are over 22 million of us who voted for him in the last election, and WE the people have not passed any no confidence vote on him. Rather we declare our unwavering support for him. We appreciate his gentle man approach to governance.

20 Die in NURTW Factional Clash in Sango Ota

16 Nov 2011

By  Sheriff Balogun

About 20 people were feared dead yesterday in Sango-Ota area of Ogun State when factional members of National Union of Road Transport Union (NURTW) engaged one another in a dawn clash over which of the factions will control the motor parks in the state.

According to an eyewitness report, the clash was bloody to say the least as the union members freely used broken bottles, guns, and knives amongst other dangerous weapons on themselves.

THISDAY gathered that the bone of contention was the nullification of an application by an Abeokuta State High Court, which was challenging the conduct of a proposed election by a faction of the union.

Another source blamed the failure to conduct a fresh election for new committee members at the expiration of the old one led by Chief Tajudeen Ibikunle also known as Baruwa as the cause of the crisis.

He noted that those who felt marginalised by the act had taken their case to court and at the nullification of the case, problem started.
The violence was said to have started around 4am and lasted for about nine hours. The police and other law enforcement agencies tried their best to bring the situation under control, for the greater part of the day.

Residents, market men and women as well as pedestrians were taken aback with the brazen manner at which members of the union freely used dangerous weapons on one another.

Speaking, a member of the election caretaker committee, Alhaji Yusuph Bamgbola, blamed the fight on some of the aggrieved members led by one Akeem Balogun otherwise known as Jango.

Bamgbola also noted that prior to the fight, they had petitioned the governor based on a tipoff that the factions were planning a showdown, but that nothing was done to prevent it.

The fight was brought to a halt following the presence of riot policemen at the scene of the incident but by then corpses had littered everywhere.

When THISDAY visited the scene of the clash, 12 mutilated corpses were counted between under the bridge and the main Sango motor park, as a result of the clash, which was said to be a counter attack by factions loyal to Baruwa who was the chairman of the Sango branch before he was sacked by the Jango boys.

The witness also told THISDAY that the remains of the dead had been deposited at some undisclosed hospitals, while the warring factions had evacuated those who sustained serious injuries.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the violent clash but described it as minor, stating that he could not give the accurate figure of the casualties until the report of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area was received.

According to him, “I don’t know the number of casualties. For now, I don’t have the exact number. Nobody can say somebody is dead, a medical doctor has to certify. The CP has not given us the exact figure. We have deployed armoured personnel carrier.
Everybody should go about his/her lawful business.”

Speaking further, Adejobi said: “We are even sending more men there; we are sending additional 40 men to that place. Our men in the place are in a show of force now, at least to show the people that we are fully on ground. We are trying to make some arrest. We must arrest some people for peace to reign in that place; that is what the command is trying to do now.”

Terrorism: FG orders reopening of 22 border posts
Written by Olalekan Adetayo and Adelani Adepegba

The Federal Government has ordered the reactivation of 22 border security posts in a bid to curb the growing wave of terrorism in the country.

The affected borders include those the country shares with Chad Republic, Niger Republic, Republic of Benin and Cameroon.

The decision to re-activate the border posts was said to have been taken at an extraordinary meeting between Nigeria’s security chiefs and representatives of the neighbouring countries in Abuja.

President Goodluck Jonathan has already ratified the decision, a Presidency source told one of our correspondents on Sunday.

The source said the reopening of the security posts would go a long way in curtailing violence in the country. The neglect of the border posts is believed to have encouraged smuggling of light arms and other trans-border crimes.

The reopening of the border security posts is also expected to check the influx of illegal alliens into the country.

It was gathered that Nigeria will supervise the border patrols across the 22 posts in partnership with security personnel in the listed countries, who will be mostly trained in Nigeria.

Already, security authorities in the three countries have met with their Nigerian counterparts and pledged their full co-operation in the fight against trans-border crimes and proliferation of light weapons.

The fresh approach to security issues in Nigeria is coming few days after Jonathan directed Ministries, Departments and Agencies to volunteer capable hands to be trained by security forces on counter terrorism and emergency response strategies.

The officials will manage related security issues in their respective MDAs to complement the efforts of key security agencies in the country.

It was also learnt that the National Security Adviser, Gen. Owoye Azazi, has ordered a 24-hour surveillance around all hotels that have over 50-rooms while all public infrastructure and private recreational centres are now to be manned by detectives.

Meanwhile, there are fears that riot policemen have deserted their duty posts in Maiduguri, Borno State, and other cities in the North-East.

A source in the Presidency told one of our correspondents in Abuja on Sunday that many policemen fled their posts in the wake of frequent attacks by members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

The source, who requested not to be named said, "Some of the policemen, especially MOPOL have left their posts service because they were not getting the kind of strong support they expected from the government. Some of them (riot policemen) were being detained for killing Boko Haram; the sect enjoys the support of top northern politicians with influence in government."

He explained that apart from the five senior policemen currently on trial in Abuja for their alleged involvement in the murder of Boko Haram founder, Mohammed Yusuf, in 2009, many other policemen were being detained for killing members of the sect.

According to the source, some of the policemen deserted their duty posts to avoid being a victim of Boko Haram attacks or to escape from possible detention for killing the sect members.

"When some of the sect members were arrested, their supporters used their connections to effect their release and this has weakened the resolve of the policemen to fight the Islamic militants because the government has not exhibited the necessary determination to show that it wants to end the activities of the group," he said.

However, the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Yemi Ajayi, denied that some policemen had resigned or deserted their duty posts.

"No policeman has left his duty post or resigned because of Boko Haram and no policeman is being detained for carrying out his duties, except the five officers facing trial over the killing of Yusuf," he said.

Boko Haram recruits more suicide bombers
From MURPHY GANAGANA, Abuja

Sunday, November 13, 2011

The dreaded Islamist sect, Boko Haram, has reportedly enlisted more volunteers willing to embark on suicide attacks across the North-Eastern flank of the country and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) even as security forces have intensified the heat on the group’s known locations in the bid to cripple its activities.

Intelligence goons, who uncovered the move, have returned to the drawing board on how to deal with the situation, Sunday Sun authoritatively learnt at the weekend in Abuja.

The number of Boko Haram volunteers for the planned suicide missions was put at between 20 and 31 by top security sources, who also hinted that intelligence reports revealed that those who offered their lives for the attacks earlier scheduled to take place in some key northern cities, including Bauchi, Kaduna and Abuja, had undertaken an oath as a mark of commitment.

The oath, according security sources, was administered to the volunteers at secret locations in two unnamed North-Eastern states, and preparations for spontaneous attacks by members of the sect were on top gear when it leaked to the police and other agencies in the intelligence community.

“We have intelligence reports that some members of Boko Haram have taken an oath and volunteered to go on suicide missions in some parts of the country. We already know all those who went on earlier missions, as well as some of the new volunteers. We have a list of these people, and we are working on how to checkmate them.

“But in doing so, we are also strategising on several approaches.

And these include a carrot and stick method. I can also tell you that at present, there are some members of the sect who are favourably disposed to dialogue, and all options would definitely be explored towards achieving set goals. But I can assure you that the Boko Haram saga would soon come to an end,” a top security chief who does not want his name in print confided yesterday.
