Following widespread concern over the integrity of the judiciary, and threat to democracy, a Coalition comprising of lawyers, civil society organisations (CSOs), political parties, and ethnic leaders has come together under the aegis of Joint Action for Democracy (JAD) to demand the immediate dismissal of Justice John Tsoho, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court and Justices Peter Lifu and James Omotosho.

This collective laudable action came on the heels of allegations that the Justices have transformed the Federal High Court into a playground for groups in support of FCT minister, Nyesom Wike through questionable exparte judgments and rulings.

The groups in a world press conference read on behalf of the coalition by their National Coordinator, High Chief Peter Ameh, expressed deep discontent regarding the apparent silence of relevant authorities.

Lamenting, he alleged that Justice Tsoho employs special judges to deliver these controversial judgments favouring pro-Wike factions.

This situation, Ameh said raises serious questions about judicial impartiality and adherence to legal standards.

He therefore said that Justice Tsoho and Lifu should be stopped from assigning, seating on any Rivers State matter until their questionable judgements/Exparte for pro-Wike groups are probed to save the image of the judiciary.

"In response to these alarming developments, ethnic youth leaders, lawyers, and former presidential candidates will march to the National Judicial Council (NJC) and foreign missions. The objective is to demand not only the removal of CJ Justice Tsoho, Lifu and Omotosho but also to advocate for a visa ban on them due to their involvement in issuing questionable judgments and exparte rulings that undermine public trust in the judiciary.

“Nigerians still remember with ignominy the decision of an enemy of democracy, Justice Bassey Ikpeme, who, on June 10, 1993, and in a similar fashion as we see today, delivered the order that truncated democracy in Nigeria and led to the nullifying of 1993 presidential election,” Ameh said.

The coalition firmly believes it is imperative to halt Justice Tsoho's, Justices Lifu's, and Omotosho's further assignments or hearings related to Rivers State matters until a thorough investigation is conducted into their questionable judgments. This step is crucial for preserving the judiciary's integrity and image as an institution dedicated to justice.

"Furthermore, lawyers across various sectors are urged to boycott courts presided over by Justice Tsoho and Justice Lifu. The continuous issuance of dubious exparte rulings that contravene established judicial precedents and constitutional provisions cannot be tolerated. The legal community must unite against practices threatening the rule of law and judicial independence.

This press statement serves as a clarion call for accountability within our judicial system. It urges all stakeholders in Nigeria’s democracy to join hands in this fight for justice and integrity within our courts.

Condemnation and shock have greeted the hoarse judgement delivered by judgment of Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The Judge, Lifu had ruled that the Electoral Act is the law for Local Government election, and not state electoral laws giving legal backing for State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs).

Expressing disappointment and disillusionment over the strange judgement, Constitutional Lawyers said, if not vacated, the ruling portend danger of undermining the already held local government elections in Kwara, Anambra, Imo, and other states which depended on their enabling SIECs laws respectively.

The Constitutional Lawyers led by Obe Agu, Esq in a statement reacting to today's verdict by Justice Lifu called on the National Judicial Council to stop him from sitting as a Federal High Court Judge if the judiciary cares about integrity and sustenance of the Nigeria's democracy.

They said the judgement, which imposes Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) laws over State Electoral Bodies in LGA elections without Constitution Amendment is strange to our laws.

The Constitutional Lawyers while lamenting further on the recent misdemeanours of Justice Lifu, said a few days, same judge delivered another Judgement for Pro Wike group that decampment is a pre election matter.

Agu on behalf of his colleagues reiterated the need for the Judge to be stopped from exhibiting his antics now by NJC before it is too late for Nigeria's judiciary which is already under public opprobrium.

"The judgement delivered today by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja that the Electoral Act is the law for Local Government election, and not state electoral laws of State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) comes to us as a rude shock and rape on the nation's judiciary as well as democracy.

"We condemn this criminal judgement of Lifu which is nothing but Constitutional aberration and cash and carry market for his benefactors who are bent on formenting trouble, especially in Rivers State where local government election are holding on Saturday.

"If not for mischief, the same Constitution that established INEC also gives legal backing to SIECs hence both bodies are saddled with responsibility of conducting elections at the appropriate tiers and no one can substitute the other except there is a constitutional alteration.

"Where was Justice Lifu because Nigerians can still recall that on July 25, the erudite Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu told the National Assembly that the commission can conduct elections into the third of government in the 36 states only if the apex legislature amend the Constitution, transferring the responsibility to it to conduct the exercise.

"Yakubu harped that; 'the same Constitution that creates INEC also creates the States Electoral Commissions. So it is up to the National Assembly to amend the law to transfer that responsibility to the INEC'.

"But while that has not been done, Justice Lifu who recently delivered another Judgement for Pro Wike group that decampment is a pre election matter, now turns around to rule that INEC should conduct elections into local government councils.

"This judgment undermines Supreme Court Judgement on LGA Election and is a threat to State that have held polls and those that are yet to hold their LGA elections. Also, already held LGA Elections in Kwara, Anambra, Imo, and other states at risk of been undermined if strange judgement is not vacated.

"We are calling on the National Judicial Council to stop him from sitting as a Federal High Court Judge if the judiciary cares about integrity and sustenance of the Nigeria's democracy."

The Federal High Court, Rivers State Judicial Division had declared that there's no going back on Rivers Local Government election scheduled for October 5.

Justice I.P.C Igwe stated this while ruling on the suit between: Action Peoples Party (APP)and Rivers state government, Defendant, Governor of Rivers

Igwe ruled that the Defendants are bound to make adequate provision for election into the Local Government Councils of Rivers State and to ensure that the affairs of the local Government Councils in Rivers State are conducted by democratically elected Local Government Councils.

Justice Igwe ordered as follows, "that upon the construction of Section 7 subsection 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFRN) 1999 as amended, the 2nd and 3rd Defendants are bound to make adequate provision for election into the Local Government Councils of Rivers State and to ensure that the affairs of the local Government Councils in Rivers State are conducted by democratically elected Local Government Councils.

That in view of Section 7 subsection 1, Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFRN) 1999 AS AMENDED, Section 5 (A) of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission. Law No 2 of 2018, the Decision of the Supreme Court of Nigeria Delivered on the 11th day of July, 2024 in Suit No SC/CV/343/2024: Attorney-General of Federation Vs Attorney General of Abia State and 35 Ors and expiration of the tenure of the former Democratically elected Local Government Councils in Rivers State on the 17th day of June, 2024, the Defendants are bound to conduct Election into the Local Government Councils in Rivers State within the shortest possible time in order to comply with aforesaid Judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

"That it is further declared that in view of Section 5 (a) of the Rivers State independent Electoral Commission Law No 2 of 2018, Section 9(1)(a), (4) to (6) of the Electoral Act, 2022 and the exigencies of the decision of the Supreme Court of Nigeria delivered on the 11th day of July, 2024 In Suit No SC/CV/343/2024: Attorney-General of the Federation VS Attorney-General of Abia State & 35 Ors, the 1st Defendant is entitled to utilize the National Register of Voters for the 2023 General Elections compiled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) pursuant to Section 9(1)(a}, (4) to (6) of the Electoral Act, 2022, already in custody of the 1st Defendant to conduct Election into the 23 Local Government Councils of Rivers State. THAT it is also declared that In view of the decision of the Federal Government of Nigeria following the said Judgment in Sult No SC/CV/343/2024 Delivered on the 11th day of July, 2024 to the effect that all states without Democratically elected Local Government Councils in place should conduct Elections into their respective Local Government Councils within three (3) months from the date of the aforesaid Judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, the defendants are bound to conduct elections into Local Government Councils in Rivers State on or before the expiration of the said three (3) months period, on the 5th day of October, 2024 and to take all neceSsary steps towards the conduct of the said Election, including sale of forms to candidates and their parties including the Claimant who Is interested in sponsoring candidates for offices in the Local Government Councils.

"THAT an order of mandatory Injunction be and is hereby issued compelling the 2nd and 3rd Defendant by themselves, or by their agents, privies, servants or representatives and proxies to make adequate provision for election into the Local Government Council in Rivers State and to ensure that the affairs of the Local Government Councils in Rivers State are Conducted by democratically Elected Local Government Councils. THAT it is further ordered that mandatory injunction be and is hereby issued compelling the 1" Defendant to conduct election into Local Government Councils of Rivers State on the 5th Day of October, 2024 or on any other date fixed by the 1st Defendant in accordance with its Electoral Guidelines in order to comply with the aforesaid Judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and to take all necessary steps towards the conduct of the said Elections including sale of forms to candidates and their parties, Including the Claimant who is interested in sponsoring candidates for offices in the Local Government Councils.

"THAT an order of mandatory Injunction be and is hereby further issued directing or commanding the 1st Defendant to utilize the National Register of Voters for the 2023 General Election compiled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) pursuant to Section 9 (1){a), (4) to (6) of the Electoral Act, 2022 to conduct Election into the twenty-three Local Government Councils of Rivers State. THAT the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, the Nigeria Army and all other Security Agencies and Paramilitary Organizations are hereby ordered to provide adequate security and ensure maintenance of peace, law and order during and after the Election."

Reacting to the court judgement, the spokesperson of Nigeria opposition lawmakers coalition in Nigeria Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, in a statement hailed the judgement saying that it is victory for democracy.

He stated that the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike efforts to stop the polls has been put to shame with this court judgement.

The statement reads, "This court judgement has saved democracy not just in Rivers State but the nation as a whole. The Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike has been put to shame with this court judgement. We thank the Judiciary for saving democracy and upholding the rule of law. The local government election in rivers state will hold as scheduled. The electoral laws are very simple, there’s no court order that can stop elections."

An Automobile Company, Ceedac Centre in Abakaliki, Ebonyi capital has begun the conversion of commercial and private vehicles to the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

Mr Nnanna Okoroafor, Head of the Company told newsmen in Abakaliki on Sunday, that the move was in line with the Presidential CNG initiative (P-CNGi).

Okoroafor explained that Ceedac Automobile Centre is a consulting auto firm, focused on training and general services.

He commended the CNG initiative by President Bola Tinubu, expressing optimism that it would provide cheaper vehicles fueling alternatives for the citizens.

"Our centre is ready to support the federal government efforts to enable transportation fares to be cheaper and affordable to the people.

"We have been able to convert vehicles from PMS-powered vehicles to CNG-powered vehicles. This is being carried out in the state by a team of trained technical engineers.

"The aim is to drive down the cost of transportation as the CNG is a cheaper, cleaner, and more sustainable than fuel.," Okoroafor stated.

He said, the Centre, located at 38B Ogoja road, opposite FCMB, Abakaliki has capacity to provide quality services to customers, especially in the area of maintenance, installation of kits and conversion of vehicles to CNG.

"Ceedac centre had trained group of certified auto gas engineers and technicians to enable them venturing into conversion of vehicles to CNG.

"Right now, we have a team of certified engineers, technicians, that have been trained in line with the Presidential CNG initiative.

"Ceedac have commenced operation in Ebonyi. We have all the required equipment, personnel and work space according to the Nigeria Automobile Designed and Development Councils (NADDC), which will be visiting our centre in no distance time for final accreditation.

"We also have the required space or land, 200 metres square and standard garage.

"We call on the federal government team to come to Abakaliki, Ebonyi capital that we are ready and conversion of vehicles has commenced in the state by our certified engineers.

"We want what is happening in Lagos, Oyo, Delta and other states to extend to Ebonyi, so, that we can enjoy cheaper transportation fare.

"You and I know that gas is cheaper, sustainable and safer and we have more gas than oil in Nigeria," he added.

Okoroafor further called on Ebonyi government, led Mr Francis Nwifuru administration, to include this project into the "people chatted of need" agenda of the present administration," Okoroafor pleaded.

Opposition Lawmakers Coalition rejects Court judgment on sacked 27 Rivers lawmakers



The Nigeria Opposition Lawmakers Coalition has rejected the federal high court judgement declaring the decampment of 27 sacked Rivers State lawmakers as a Pre-election issue

They insisted that the Judgement is an assault on constitutional democracy and Rt.Hon.Oko Jumbo Remains the valid Speaker Of Rivers State House of Assembly based on existing High Court Judgements and rulings recognising as such.

The Federal High Court in Abuja, had on Friday dismissed a defection suit instituted against the 27 former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Ezenwo Wike by APP Action People's Party .

The suit seeking to replace the 27 lawmakers on account of their defection from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was dismissed.

Justice Peter Lifu who delivered the judgment held that the suit instituted by the Action People’s Party APP was statute barred having not been filed within 14 days allowed by law because in his thinking decampment of lawmakers is a pre election issue.

A judgement which will alter the interpretation of what constitute pre election since decampment is not among the issues that constitute pre election.

But, the opposition coalition lawmakers, reacting at a world press conference by its spokesperson, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere stated that the pro-Wike lawmakers seats remain vacant because in line with the law they defected to APC and are no longer members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and there are many valid rulings of High Court that have restrained them from illegally parading as lawmakers and declaring Oko Jumbo as the Valid Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Ikenga noted that Oko Jumbo remains the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and they are going to appeal the ruling.

"The Opposition considered it very strange and unknown to law that issues of decampment which can happen any time within the four years mandate of a lawmaker is now been declared a pre election issue that must come within 14 days like primary election.

"The constitution recognises issues of pre election around primary election and not decampment which can only be established once the court first rules on it before the by election can be conducted and hence can't be termed pre election .

"They expressed optimism that the judgement won't survive in Appeal Court, the Lawmakers, made reference to the High Court Judgement months ago barring the 27 sacked lawmakers from parading, adding that it still remains valid and has not been voided by any higher court.

"The Local Government election in the state will go on the 5th of October as scheduled and nothing can stop it as the constitution and electoral act have said no court can stop the conduct of elections.

They said: "We totally reject the federal high court judgement today September 20, declaring the decampment of 27 sacked Rivers State lawmakers as a Pre-election issue.

"The pro-Wike lawmakers seats remain vacant because in line with the law they defected to APC and are no longer members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

"It’s widely known that these 27 Law makers publicly decamped to APC and have at various times deposed to Affidavits even in a suit at the Federal High Court in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/1681/CS/2023 that they’re now members of the APC owing to the alleged crisis in PDP.

"Oko Jumbo is still Rivers Assembly Speaker and this ruling will be appealed. We are optimistic and nothing will stop the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara from completing his tenure and even winning second term if he so pleases.

Stakeholder condemns Federal High Court ruling on 27 sacked Rivers Lawmakers

Anger and condemnation have trailed the federal high court judgement declaring the decampment of 27 sacked Rivers State lawmakers as a Pre-election issue.

The Federal High Court in Abuja, had on Friday dismissed a defection suit instituted against the 27 former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.

The suit seeking to replace the 27 lawmakers on account of their defection from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was dismissed. Justice Peter Lifu who delivered the judgment held that the suit instituted by the Action People’s Party (APP) was statute barred having not been filed within 14 days allowed by law.

The development has been frowned upon by well meaning Nigerians, who lamented that ruling like this is proof that some judicial officers will ruin democracy.

Barr. Tochukwu Oha Constitutional Lawyer, addressing newsmen lamented that the Federal high court in a bid to please some vested interests, introduced a new interpretation to the constitution.

According to him, what the court did today, going against the law is shameful, stating that if it's not overturned by the appellate or supreme court then the nation is in trouble.

He called on the National Judicial Council, NJC to purge the judiciary of any recklessness and rascality by some of its officers bent on continuously disparaging its integrity.

Oha said: "I am bewildered at this joke of a ruling by the federal high court. I'm in total disbelief that the court went against the law and introduced a new interpretation to the constitution.

"These sacked Lawmakers publicly decamped to APC and have at various times deposed to Affidavits even in a suit at the Federal High Court in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/1681/CS/2023 that they’re now members of the APC owing to the alleged crisis in PDP.

“The position of the law in this respect is very clear that once a member of a political party in the parliament defects to another political party when no crisis exists in the his political party, such a seat is declared vacant.

"Their acts of defection is a completed act and the leadership of the House of Assembly of Rivers State has done the needful and it’s no longer an issue that their seats have since been declared vacant. Let it also be known that presently there’s a subsisting court pronouncement in Suit No PHC/512/CS/2024 restraining the 27 Lawmakers from parading themselves.

"It's time that the NJC sits up and purge the judiciary of any recklessness and rascality by some of its officers bent on continuously disparaging the integrity of the Judiciary by delving into the muddy waters of Politics by judgments emanating from their courts."

The Action People's Party, APP has vowed to appeal the judgement of the federal high court declaring the decampment of 27 sacked Rivers State lawmakers as a Pre-election issue.

Our correspondent recalls that the Federal High Court in Abuja, had on Friday dismissed a defection suit instituted by APP against the 27 former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.

The party in a statement by its National Chairman, Barr. Uche Nnadi rejected the ruling, insisting that the former lawmakers remain sacked until a higher court rule otherwise.

He stated that the court ruling is against the constitution, noting however that if the court says that the matter is a Pre-election issue then that how can someone who's yet to win election a Lawmaker and as well defect, even when he has not been elected.

Nnadi added that the party is already filing an appeal, and that Oko Jumbo remains speaker of Rivers state house of assembly.

He said: "So decampment is now a Pre-election matter? That’s not what the constitution says. On the abuse of court process, The pending cases in that federal high court before justice omotosho was on trying to stop the National Assembly from taking over the functions of rivers state house of assembly.

"No court has declared that the illegal decampment of the sacked lawmakers is valid. They can’t come through the back door. The matter is being appealed. And going by subsisting judgements of the courts Oko Jumbo remains speaker of Rivers state house of assembly.

A former House of Representatives candidate in the Labour Party (LP) in Anambra State, Prince Hez Okonkwo has said that he remains a member of the party and staunch supporter of Mr. Peter Obi.

He made the declaration in Abuja on Thursday through a statement he personally signed.

Okonkwo was the LP candidate for Ihiala Federal Constituency in the 2023 general elections was reacting to rumours in the social media that he was part of a press conference called by the former national chairman of the LP, Mr. Julius Abure where the former Labour Party boss announced that the party’s automatic ticket for Peter Obi and Governor Alex Otti of Abia State had been withdrawn.

He noted that the rumour was a mere “falsehood” being propagated by “faceless individuals.”

According to Okonkwo, my attention has been drawn to a malicious propaganda and campaign of calumny targeted at my person by certain political interest in Anambra State.

“In their latest effort to paint me black and create a bogus image for my person, a screenshot of Channels Television news aired on Monday September 9, 2024 where the former Chairman of the Labour Party, Mr. Julius Abure addressed a press conference in Abuja, the said news report is being circulated mainly on WhatsApp platforms purporting that I was in the press conference.

“Ordinarily I would ignore the shenanigans of detractors, but for the records, it is important that I make it clear here and now that I, Prince Sir Hez Okonkwo, Ochiagha Lilu, has nothing to do with the said press conference. I was neither invited nor took part in such frivolity. I am sure that the organisers of the press conference has the record of those they invited.

“the person being circled in the screenshot is NOT Me! I have never worn that type of cloth neither am I as fat as the man in the screenshot picture. Everyone that knows me in person will already know that I am not the person in the said event.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I was in Kaduna State attending to my private business on Monday 9, 2024 when the said press conference held in Abuja.

Speaking on his relationship with Peter Obi, Okonkwo said that he had been friends with Peter Obi long before the 2023 elections. He noted that Peter Obi remains the face of the Labour Party in Nigeria.

He said, “I am not oblivious of the fact that some persons created this falsehood to create a doubt between me and my dear brother and friend, His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections.

“It is, However, important that these faceless individuals realise that my friendship with Peter Obi predates the Labour Party. It should be noted without any fear of contradiction that, aside being my brother and friend, Peter Obi is someone I totally align with politically, and that is why “I joined other patriotic Anambrarians to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the Labour Party in the buildup to the 2023 general elections.

A social rights organisation, Coalition of Worried Nigerian Citizens (WNC) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to make public its findings on the alleged N7.5 billion contract scam in the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Our correspondent recalls that the commission had confirmed that a whopping sum of N7,500,000,000 (Seven billion five hundred million naira) scam was uncovered in a contract award process in NSCDC.

In a statement issued by the Organisation in Abuja on Tuesday and signed by its convener, Mr Moses Idika urged EFCC not to let Nigerians down by sweeping the matter under the carpet.

According to the Organisation, “It is of utmost importance that the EFCC must carry the Nigerian public along in the discharge of its duties, especially now that Nigerians are looking up to the commission to curb the ravaging corruption in public institutions.

"It is also pertinent that Nigerians see EFCC as working for the people and not a mere political tool to witch-hunt estranged political foes.

"The while raising questions over the silence of the EFCC even when the commission in its preliminary report on the matter had vowed to Nigerians that “the commission will prosecute every persons found guilty before the court in respect of the case.

"It will be recalled that the EFCC had in may alerted Nigerians of a contract scam in the NSCDC which had led to the questioning of the Commandant-General of the Corps, AHMED ABUBAKAR AUDI and subsequent arrest of about 20 senior officers of the corps.

"The EFCC had also told Nigerians that it had recovered N1 billion of the stolen money. The anti-graft agency also alerted Nigerians that the Managing Director of three companies, ABSOLUTE SOLUTIONS, CERISE and MNT Limited which were indicted in the scam had refused to honour the invitation of the commission.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has demanded an immediate end to the alleged victimisation and sack of its members in some public institutions, including Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki.

The Calabar Zone of ASUU made the demand during a solidarity rally held at the EBSU permanent site in Abakiliki on Tuesday.

The Zonal Coordinator of the union, Mrs Happiness Uduk, said the rally was part of the events to mark the “Victimised Lecturer Day”.

Uduk said that putting an end to the victimisation and sacking of the union members would help to engender peace in the institutions.

She further said that the rally was targeted at achieving sustainable peace between staff, government and the university management in theASUU, various institutions.

She further said that some of the affected members work at the Lagos State University, Kogi State University, Abia State University, Uturu, among others.

Uduk decried the way the members of staff of the listed institutions had suffered victimisation in the form of suspension, promotion denial, unpaid salaries and sack.

“We are here to show solidarity with our EBSU branch and protest the unwarranted victimisation of our members.

“Pained by the intimidation and victimisation of our members, who are fighting for positive outcomes in the Nigerian universities, we are here to speak in the interest of peace.

“We, therefore, call for the reinstatement of the 120 academic staff of Kogi State University, dismissed illegally for over seven years from 2017 to date.

“They were sacked for participating in a legitimate action, demanding better welfare for members, especially payment of backlog of salaries and allowances, proper funding, university autonomy, and academic freedom.

“In EBSU, many infractions have been experienced by a handful of our members, which include victimisation.

“The EBSU branch Chairperson, Ikechuku Igwenyi, was suspended.

“He was denied his Professorial promotion due since 2017 and banned from the institution’s premises, though existential aspects of his life are tied to the campus.

“Some others were suspended and placed on half salary without due process and fair hearing as academic staff members and as stipulated in the Conditions of Service of EBSU and the Miscellaneous Act 2003 (As amended).

“Comrades Idenyi and Igwenyi have remained suspended without trial for 34 months.

“The union frowns at this severe victimisation and calls on the university administration to toe the path of peace and recall its members, while ensuring the immediate payment of their entitlements,” Uduk said.

In a speecb, the EBSU-ASUU Chairman, Igwenyi, also begged for his reinstatement and payment of his salaries.

“The EBSU should allow the union in the university to operate and function, like other universities across the country,” he said.

Fifty five years after the civil war, the lingering effects of the war is still visible among the Igbo. Ndigbo being the worst hit of the civil war, still bear scars from the war,with ongoing displacement, poverty, trauma, environmental degradation, security concerns, infrastructural deficit and marginalization.

At one time or the other, past Nigerian presidents made varying efforts to address the negative effects of the civil war on the Igbo people, but they all left limited impact.

The most striking was the 3R sophistry by General Yakubu Gown in January 1970. Gowon had assured the world that there would be Reconciliation, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (3R), of the Igbo land,as a result of the war ravages, but 54 years after, the South East has witnessed the direct opposite of the 3Rs, even in exponential proportion.

In a similar move, General Olusegun Obasanjo, established the South East Development Initiative(SEDI), to address regional development challenges, but the challenges still persisted.

Alhaji Shehu Shagari made a corresponding effort in his launching of the Presidential Task Force on Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, for the sole purpose of addressing the civil war's effects, but the impact was small scaled,due to his short tenure in office.

Other efforts by Gen Ibrahim Babangida,spanned across the introduction of the National Commission for Refugees,Displaced Persons and Rehabilitation to confront the plight of war-affected communities.

Gen Sabi Abacha, came up with the National Council on Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, while President Good luck Ebele Jonathan, launched the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peace in the Niger Delta, which included initiatives for the South East. He also established the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, to promote education in the region.

President Muhammadu Buhari in his own dimension to tackle the region's infrastructure deficit, began the construction of the second Niger bridge, the Enugu-Portharcourt Expressway and also, formed the Presidential Committee on South East Initiative (PCSEI), to handle the regional development challenges.

While these attempts were aimed to grapple with the negative effects of the civil war, they have been criticized for being inadequate,slow paced or politicized. The South East region still demands sustained attention and investment to fully handle the effects of the civil war. These were the pitfalls of past efforts to reposition the region.

None of the struggle by past national leaders could actualize the setting up of a South East Development Commission(SEDC), that will solely tackle head on the numerous challenges facing Ndigbo from education,healthcare, marginalization, security, infrastructure, and others.

Several Igbo leaders had equally attempted to bring the South East Development Commission Bill to Law, but Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu's efforts remained phenomenon.

Let me quickly give an overview of the actions of some of our Igbo representatives in actualizing this course,so you could appreciate better, the leadership excellence of the current Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Senator Ike Ekweremadu in 2015, sponsored a Bill similar to the SEDC, but it didn't pass the second reading. Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe in 2017, introduced a Bill,but it stalled,due to lack of support. Governor Dave Umahi in 2018, advocated for a South East Development Commission,but his efforts were met with limited success. In 2019, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the highest socio-cultural organization in Igbo land, went a step higher in pushing for the actualization of SEDC, but it did not gain traction.

Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu in 2020, rewrote history, by successfully sponsoring the SEDC Bill which passed the second reading and eventually passed into Law in 2024. This can only be likened to GRACE.

Interestingly, the passage of the South East Development Commission Bill to Law, marks a significant milestone in the quest for a regional development and growth. The ground breaking legislation sponsored by the indefatigable number 6 citizen of the country,is a testament to his unwavering commitment to the welfare ane progress of the region. The combination of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Deputy Speaker,Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu, broke the over 54 years jinx with the SEDC Law.

President Tinubu has shown a major departure from the Buhari's regime, by signing the SEDC Bill into Law. This further shows his intention about the development of the South East region and his believe in building the nation in the fulcrum of fairness, equity and unity, hence his commitment to ensuring equitable development, inclusive governance,and the provision of qualitative services to all Nigerians, no matter where they reside,while knitting more tightly together the national fabric.

Like the North East Development Commission (NEDC), which brought tremendous transformation in the North East, especially on the area of humanitarian support (where Internally Displaced Persons and victims of insurgency were aided), education/healthcare support(schools and healthcare facilities are being built and upgraded), economic empowerment; through skills training, entrepreneurship support and job creations and initiatives.

Environmental remediation of areas in the region suffering ecological issue, pollution,among other interventions, the South East Development Commission will facilitate the development of critical infrastructure such as roads,bridges and public buildings in the South East region.

The commission can implement policies and programs to boost economic growth, create jobs, and provide access to credit facilities for entrepreneurs and small businesses. Under education and healthcare, the SEDC can invest in education and healthcare infrastructure, improving access to quality education abd medical care.


SEDC will address environmental degradation by cleaning up pollution,rehabilitating damaged ecosystems, and promoting sustainable practices.The commission will ensure Ndigbo have a stronger voice in national politics and decision-making processes.

It can promote and preserve Igbo language and culture, collaborating with security agencies to address insecurity challenges in the region, manage special intervention funds to address specific regional challenges.

The South East Development Commission can foster economic integration and cooperation among southeastern states, addressing historical injustices and lingering issues from the civil war, such as, rehabilitation of war-affected areas and compensation for victims.


While past efforts to reintegrate the Igbo people met minimal result, the SEDC which covers the five eastern states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo, would go a long way to assuage the feelings of the Igbo with respect to the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses and other infrastructural damages suffered by the region, as well as,tackle ecological problems and other related environmental or development challenges in the region.

However, by addressing these issues, the SEDC would help to bridge the developmental gap, promote economic growth, and improve the overall well-being of Ndigbo.

The key point of discussion is that the South East Development Commission, stands out from previous initiatives, as it incorporates vital elements that guarantee its long-term viability and success,such as:

Legislative Backing:The commission is legislatively backed, giving it a strong legal foundation and authority to operate.

Structured approach: SEDC has a clear structure, mandate, and funding mechanism, ensuring a systematic approach to development.

Regional focus:The commission is specifically focused on the South East region, addressing its unique challenges and needs.

Inclusive representation: It has a board comprising representatives from each South East state, ensuring diverse perspectives and regional buy-in.

Comprehensive scope: The commission's mandate covers various aspects, including infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic development.

Sustained commitment:SEDC is designed to be a long-term initiative, ensuring consistent effort and progress.

Community engagement:It encourages community participation and ownership, fostering grassroots support and inclusivity.

Accountability mechanisms:It has built-in accountability mechanisms, ensuring transparency and effective use of resources.

Though past efforts, while well-intentioned, often lacked one or more of these elements, limiting their impact and sustainability. The SEDC law addresses these gaps, providing a robust framework for meaningful reintegration and development.


At this juncture, it won't be out of place if I say that Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu is not playing politics of rice and wrappers, but diving into the mainstream of governance, which goes beyond just touching the lives of an individual or group of people.

Myopic critics would seek for mere empowerment for a set of people, but a strategic thinker, seeks for lasting avenues that could create endless opportunities for the entire region.

He has created a platform for coordinated development, empowering the region to unlock its vast potential. "What no past Igbo leader could ever achieve, Ben Kalu broke the jinx".

He made a historic achievement that can positively impact the lives of millions, leaving a lasting legacy.

He prioritized the region's interest over his personal gain and has established a precedent for future leaders to follow, encouraging them to prioritize regional development.

BOK as he is fondly called by friends, has demonstrated foresight and understanding of the needs of his region with an unwavering commitment,which showed dedication and perseverance in pushing for the Bill's passage,despite potential obstacles.

This goes ahead to remind me of the words of Zig Ziglar that says,"With hardwork and determination,you can achieve anything you set your mind to".

His suave, assertive, sagacious, outspoken and visionary dispositions were highpoints in achieving the South East Development Commission and they remained a very inspiring and veritable source of hope for Ndigbo. "Indeed, Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu,is a beacon of hope and a pillar of transformation for the South East region".

The South East Development Commission, a long-awaited initiative decades in the making, was finally brought to fruition by Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu and his team.

Bomb Blast: Opposition coalition accuses pro Wike camp of being responsible of attack at APP Hqrs



The Opposition Coalition has accused the groups supporting the minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike of being the brain behind the alleged bloody gun attack at Action People's Party, APP headquarters yesterday, weeks after bomb blast.

Our correspondent recalls that gunmen reportedly shot a security guard at the Action People’s Party (APP) secretariat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The attack carried out at midnight comes less than a month after the party’s secretariat in the New GRA of Port Harcourt was bombed.

The state chairman of the party, Mr Sunny Wokekoro who addressed journalists at the party’s secretariat on Wednesday said details surrounding the shooting remain unclear.

Wokekoro said the injured security guard is currently receiving treatment at a hospital, while police officers deployed to the secretariat after the bombing incident are yet to brief the party on the latest attack.

Also in a statement, the Spokesman of the Opposition Coalition, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere condemned the attack said Nigeria is at a tipping moment and so much anger caused by economic challenges, hence those promoting political violence in Rivers State with the tacit support of some Federal institutions do not mean well for the President.

Ugochinyere therefore urged President Bola Tinubu and security Chiefs to stop worsening bloody attacks to avoid repeat of crisis that led to the collapse of democracy.

He said: "Late last night I received a distress call from the National Chairman of one of the rising opposition political parties Action People's Party (APP) that their Rivers State Party Secretariat was under attack with heavy gun shots raining from every corner with the head of security of the Party already shot.

"As it would turn out, the bullet fortunately pierced via his buttocks. He is graciously alive but critically lying at the hospital.

"This attack is coming few weeks after a bomb was detonated at this same party office that left the building partially damaged and just few days after it's renovation heavily armed gunmen opened fire with intent to kill everyone on sight.

"This is same method and approach used by pro-Wike group who during a protest carried bomb that later detonated among themselves injuring the carrier of the bomb and up till now the police have been unable to deal with these sponsors of these parading daylight killers who think that the only way to regain political power that they have lost is to kill and main innocent citizens.

"Let it be known that no power on earth or desperate empty humans can intimidate the opposition in their defence of democracy in Rivers State and there is nothing that can ever lead to removal of the Governor even if they detonate nuclear bomb and set fire on the state as they have publicly declared.

"I am calling on the president to remember the political crisis of the 60 and 80's that saw federal backed desperados descend on the states and regions with unimaginable crises that eventually led to the collapse of democracy.

"Nigeria is at a tipping moment and so much anger caused by economic challenges, those promoting political violence in Rivers State with the tacit support of some Federal institutions do not mean well for the president but rather want to use their action to bring so much crisis and disdain that can destabilise the federal government.

"Some of them are claiming that already they as officials of the FG have a commitment to destabilise the states led by the opposition a statement that is an act of treason that should have led to them being arrested and prosecuted but nothing has happened.

"This is the time for President Tinubu to act to save his administration, which is facing multiple challenges that need cohesion and working together and not throwing bombs by elements that parade as protecting his interest.

"Nobody knows what roof the bomb will land next or what those being bombed will do in reaction. Whichever way, it is not in our national interest to allow a culture of democracy by bomb. Stop these elements now before it's too late," he stated.

The chairman of the Abakaliki rice mill industry, comrade Obeji Linus, has applauded the Ebonyi state governor, R.t. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, on the implementation of the 70,000 naira national minimum wage.

Governor Nwifuru had announced that workers in the state would henceforth be paid salaries according to the approved national minimum wage by the federal government, which has brought excitement amongst them.

Speaking with journalists in Abakaliki, the state capital, Comrade Obeji, who commended the governor's gestures to workers in the state, said it would go along way to cushion the effects of hardship on the people.

"The impacts of the Governor's administration on the people of Ebonyi State are really becoming monumental to the extent that the worker's salary that he has increased has gone along way to ameliorating the sufferings of our people, who were hitherto abandoned.

"The steps that the Governor has taken towards the welfare of workers are monumental; the impacts are very obvious; he started from paying gratuity and pension, then increased salaries, and in December he gave each civil servant the sum of one hundred thousand naira," Obeji said.

It would be recalled that on the first of May 2024, during the worker's day celebration, the governor had pronounced that he was going to implement the national minimum wage, pending when the tripartite committee was able to come out with their resolution.

"It must be on record that he was the first among the southeast governors to say that he was going to pay; this governor is indeed anchoring his administration on people's charter of needs, which means touching the lives of people, the lives of average workers in the state is smiling, and he has given them value.

He equally commended him for employing fresh workers into the state civil service, noting that his people-oriented policies have rekindled the munds of citizens to consider working for the government.

Governor Siminalayii Fubara of Rivers State has commended Corps Members' iimmense contributions towards nation building especially in the areas of education, healthcare, agriculture and rural infrastructure."

Fubara gave the commendation today during the swearing in ceremony of 2024 Batch B Stream II Corps Members deployed to the state at the NYSC permanent orientation camp, Nonwa-Gbam Tai Local Government Area.

The governor represented by the Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Bureau, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Hamilton Amadi, eulogised Corps Members for their patriotism and commitment in improving the lives of rural dwellers.

"This commitment is demonstrated through the execution of Community Development projects among other life enhancing initiatives.

"I urge the management of the scheme to always think out of the box, to strategically position the scheme and corps members into self-sustenance.

"My administration will always support the scheme to improve its operations especially in the area of skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development (SAED) programme."

The NYSC Rivers State Coordinator, Mr. George Mfongang in his address, urged the corps members to use the opportunity of the service Year, to uplift the nation.

"Nigeria earnestly crave for peace and prosperity, as you are in advantaged position to drive this charge being agents of positive change.

"I encourage you to always make honest and patriotic sacrifices in re-engineering socio-economic growth and development of the country.

..Urges National Boundary Commission To Complement His Efforts To End Boundary Clashes...



The chairman of the Abakaliki rice mill industry, comrade Obeji Linus, has commended the Governor of Ebonyi State, R.t. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, on the creation of additional autonomous communities in the state, saying that it would engender peace and development for the people.

Recalled that the Ebonyi state House of Assembly, on Monday, approved the Governor's request for the creation of Mgbo Agbaja, Abofia Mgbo, Oferekpe Agbaja, Ndiechi Agbaja, Nduegu Agbaja, and Enyim autonomous communities from the old Agbaja autonomous community.

Also approved are four new autonomous communities that were carved out of the Igbeagu autonomous community: Ndubia, Nchoko, Ndiechi, and Iphuigwe autonomous communities.

Reacting to the development, Linus Obeji, an indigene of the Iphuigwe autonomous community, said the development would empower the people to govern themselves, which would further promote peace and development as well as give them a sense of value in the state.

"The benefit of this is so enormous; this would further end the crisis in these areas and bring peace to the people. peace has returned; from the first day His Excellency, RT Hon. Builder Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru came to the office, he has established peace in Ebonyi State.

"This will engender peace across the communities because the people will begin to manage themselves not by others outside the community, and it will improve security and restore normalcy, which will further bring development and job opportunities for our people.

He appealed to the National Boundary Commission to make a thorough assessment of areas of concern, demarcating various communities to end boundary clashes among neighboring states.

"For example, the Ukele/Igbeagu communal clash can be said to have been orchestrated by a lack of clear demarcation of these areas; we urge the National Boundary Commission to do the needful in order to maintain peace and quietness." He stated.

He commended members of the State House of Assembly, led by the speaker, Rt Hon Moses Ije Udunwa, for their quick response to the governor's request for the creation of these communities.

The Wikipedia describes “a police state as a state whose government institutions exercise an extreme level of control over civil society and liberties. There is typically little or no distinction between the law and the exercise of political power by the executive, and the deployment of internal security and police forces play a heightened role in governance”.

It further states the “a police state is a characteristic of authoritarian, totalitarian or illiberal regimes (contrary to a liberal democratic regime). Such governments are typically one-party states, but a police state may emerge in a democracy”

Another authority defined a police state as “a totalitarian state controlled by a political police force that secretly supervises the citizens' activities”.

During the recent national hunger protest, complaints of police brutality leading to alleged fatalities were rampant. It was so much so that Amnesty International issued a state statement indicating that 13 persons were killed in the first day of the nationwide protests, and calling for a probe. 

Other notable individuals and organizations had also raised concerns about the same allegations indicting the Nigeria police of extreme force against unarmed protesters. One of such organizations was the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) led by Comrade Joe Ajaero. This also included the Presidential Candidates of the PDP and LP in the 2023 Presidential elections; Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi respectively.

It is noteworthy that the NLC had since July 2024 been facing pressures over the nationwide protest that eventually took place in the month in August. In statement signed by the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero on Wednesday, the Congress advised the federal government and the sub-national governments “to listen to the cries of the hungry Nigerian people, and address the economic crisis.”

Prior to this time, and arising from bourgeoning leadership crisis in the Labour Party (LP), which the NLC is the legally recognized institutional promoter; the Congress had convened an expansive stakeholders meeting in April 2024 to midwife a National Transition Committee (NTC) to manage the affairs of the LP in a post-Abure era, given that the tenure of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) was set to expire on July 9, 2024.

Beginning from that date, and given the intransigence of the Abure team on sitting tight, events suggestive of coordinated blackmail and assaults on the NLC and its leadership crept in from several seen and unseen sources. They were, obviously, all targeted at frustrating the noble efforts of the LP-NTC to birth a formidable LP; as the viable alternative political platform for the majority of yearning Nigerians.

First, the police was innocuously used to frustrate the LP-NTC’s effort to takeover the National Secretariat of the LP, as its rightful operational hub on July 13, 2024. This was later explained away as a sincere effort to ensure peace and avert a breakdown of law and order; even though the police team bias against the LP-NTC was all too clear during the event.

Then on July 7, 2024, security agents conducted a night raid on the NLC national secretariat in Abuja.

According to the NLC spokesperson, Benson Upah, the operatives burst into the building at about 8.30 pm and arrested the security guards, forcing them to hand over keys to the offices on the second floor.

The police which later took responsibility for the operation, said it was aimed at uncovering incriminating documents that could help build a case against an international “subversive” figure considered a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

This explanation was promptly rejected by the NLC and the Congress went ahead to demand the prompt release of its arrested members and seized documents.

Curiously on August 13, 2024; Abayomi Arabambi, the National Publicity Secretary of the defunct Abure NWC; which tenure expired on July 9, 2024 released a rancorous press statement that amongst other things accused the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, and the LP-NTC of PLANNING TO USE LABOUR PARTY FOR INSURRECTION AND DESTABILIZATION OF NIGERIAN DEMOCRACY, LABELING THEM SECURITY THREATS. They provided no evidence to back up the wild allegations.

Following quickly from the unexplained raid of the NLC secretariat, the allegation by Arabambi was seen as a kite being flown by the unseen conspirators clearly intent on blackmailing and intimidating the NLC and its leadership into abandoning the charted course to a new and vibrant LP. But no one could fathom that the police would fall for the naked bait.

This is why the sudden and unexplained police letter dated August 19, 2024 to Joe Ajaero inviting him “for questioning over alleged criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion and cybercrime in which he was mentioned” is not only curious; but suspect. Who wants Joe Ajaero silenced is the question now?

It is also on record that Joe Ajaero was in November 2023, during a protest in Owerri, allegedly singled out for “brutish and degrading” by the police accompanied by thugs. In a joint press release then, the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) said that "police accompanied by thugs inflicted heavy injuries and blows to his [Mr Ajaero's] head and body, kicking him in the process while dragging him on the ground". NLC spokesman Benson Upah also alleged that police continued to assault Mr Ajaero after taking him away, causing injuries that shut his right eye.

He was later released and immediately went to receive medical treatment for facial injuries.

For a man whose public profile is so well known and who cannot suddenly disappear from circulation, even if he wanted to; the abruptness with which the police wants him to appear within 24 hours to answer to such high crimes without prior accusations, rankles the brain.

This also calls to question if citizens rights to fair hearing guaranteed under section 36 of the 1999 constitution (as amended) still means anything to our securty agencies; especially the Police.

It is, therefore, heartwarming that Femi Falana, SAN has offered his revered self and services in defense of citizen Joe Ajaero. He has rightfully requested a shift in date and more importantly particulars-“nature and detail of the criminal allegations of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion and cybercrime leveled against him”.

It is hoped that the police authorities will allow this due process to operate, and abide by it, in accordance with the laws of the land.

But the more important concern is what happens to the millions of ordinary Nigerians who do not have access to and capacity for the representation of a Femi Falana, as Joe Ajaero now has?

How many have suffered indignities and other negative consequences for “fly by the night” allegations wrapped around their necks for reasons that may never be explained? How many more shall suffer same?

Above all, this calls for great concern and raises the question: Who Wants Joe Ajaero Silenced or Is This The Return of Police State?

A chieftain of the People's Democratic Party(PDP) from Ebonyi state, Engr. Chinedum Elekwachi has described the Reconciliation and Disciplinary committee of the party inaugurated last week as incomplete without the youths membership in both committees.

The erstwhile State chairman of the Action People's Party in Ebonyi state lamented that the obvious omission of the young people in the committee raises a question mark on the sensitivity of the National working committee on the importance of the youths to political movement

"It came as a strange to me that in this struggling moment of our party that the National working committee is not sensitive enough to accommodate youths to important committees such as the reconciliation and disciplinary committee inaugurated last week "

"Political struggles all over the world are driven by the young people and I know that Nigerian youths has not failed in this regards or maybe they are only important to do hatchet jobs for politicians during elections "

"This wrong narratives must change and as far as I am concerned those committees as inaugurated remains incomplete. I will take this protest to the National Youth Leader because who will represent the interest of young people in the committees? So we need to address it.

"If they are thinking that there's no aggrieved youth in the party they will be dwelling on self denials. We have friends and comrades that left the party buildup to the 2023 general election because of different levels of provocations. Does these comrades don't need to be pacified to return?

The Nwanza story is an Igbo adage about Nwanza, the little bird, which after a heavy meal, decided to challenge his chi (god) to a wrestling match!

That immortal saying in Igbo cultural cosmogony has been the standard advice against pride and all forms of its intoxication that always lead to the unraveling of anyone who fails to heed.

The recent ego trip and infantile vituperations against the Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti, by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu; who become loquaciously boastful of his rank as the 6th citizen, hence the 6th most important person in Nigeria’s political firmament is very shameful and smacks of the Nwanza story.

Hon. Kalu is the lackey greenhorn that arrived the National Assembly six years ago, and six years later became the 6th “most important” politician in Nigeria. What a feat!

Indeed, he is a lucky youngman, but then how lucky can one become to the point of discarding history and the rich lessons of HISTORY?

For starters, our younger brother must be awakened to the reality of his situation and the larger realities of his people, the Igbo people of Nigeria. He must be reminded that Ndigbo have never been strangers to the leadership of the Nigerian National Assembly.

In fact, at the dawn of Independence, the iconic Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe became the first Nigerian indigenous President of the Senate. After him was Prince Nwafor Orizu who was the President of the Senate up until 1966.

At the return of Democracy in 1979, Rt. Hon. Edwin Umezoke emerged SPEAKER of the House of Representatives until the military coup of 1983.

Again after the then recurrent military interregnums, at the dawn of the current democratic experience in 1999; NdiIgbo once again rose to the occasion as Sen. Evan Enwerem, Dr. Chuba Okadigbo, Sen Adolphus Wabara, Sen. Ken Nnamani and Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim all at different times served as the President of the Senate and Chairmen of the National Assembly.

In the same breath, Hon. Chibudom Nwuche and Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha both served as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives; with Ihedioha ending the 2011-2015 tenure as Speaker of the House.

These great men all conducted themselves with decorum, respect for elders and regard to process; in the full knowledge of the solemnity of their positions as people holding forte for the Ndigbo and Nigeria. More so, as democrats who derive their powers and position from the collectivism of the peoples’ will.

It is, therefore, shocking that with this rich history at his disposal, Hon. Benjamin Kalu has been prancing around, trampling on the collective intelligence of Ndigbo just because he is today the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Hon. Kalu’s attacks on the Labour Party (LP), my party, the party that Nigerians especially his own people have come to embrace as the viable alternative is not just unfortunate, but a pathway to perdition and political hara-kiri.

Hon. Kalu needs not be reminded that Dr. Alex Otti, a distinguished Nigerian, banker, economic expert and development strategist towers well above his boastful and exuberant despondency.

Dr. Alex Otti has over time learnt the ropes of the Nigerian leadership trajectory and remains an unrepentant believer in both the power of the people and the power in the people.

Today he has become a shining example of the Peter Obi philosophy of A New Nigeria through his breakthrough governance in Abia State; a shining example of the difference good governance can make in a society.

For over two decades, Abia State had tottered on the brink; cascading towards the abyss of nothingness in governance and public service.

However, in barely one year and half, the difference is clear as hopes have been reawakened in Abia State and the people are already self-mobilising for the progress ahead with Dr. Alex Otti.

Dr. Otti has come to work in Abia, the evidence is clear to even the blind; even as it is morning yet on creation day!

More so, Deputy Speaker Kalu should already know that Nigerians are wiser now and can no longer be railroaded to the Golgotha by political threats or deceitful cajoling. Accordingly, Abia, the God’s Own State, cannot be a reward for brigandage and political tokenism.

Like has been pointed out in other fora, President Bola Tinubu, as he promised during the runup to the 2023 general elections, has continued from where former President Mohammadu Buhari stopped-nay the marginalization and oppression of the Igbo people; the only difference is that the Ndigbo are now being openly given quit notices in parts of Nigeria. Thankfully, the resilient spirit of Ndigbo subsists and will continue to subsist.

Deputy Speaker Kalu should use the instrumentality of his “6th most important personality” to get his peers at the top echelon of Nigeria’s ruling class to instead of glossing over the issuing threats to Ndigbo, rather declare an emergency on hunger, darkness, insecurity and starvation that are devastating all Nigerians.

As already noted, Ndigbo are unapologetic in their political choices or the political party to support, especially with their past and present experiences with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Neither the eight years of Buhari, nor the current Tinubu presidency can change that. The take-it-by-force and run-with-it concept of 2023, and now being championed by Ben Kalu, will no longer work in Igboland.

For the avoidance of doubt, Deputy Speaker Kalu has the undeniable right to aspire to the highest office in Abia State in 2027, but he has to campaign and convince the people to elect him to that exalted office.

Attacking Governor Alex Otti, or threatening Igbo people with a forceful reward for President Tinubu is definitely not be the way to go.

My dear younger brother, Hon. Benjamin Kalu should enjoy his sudden political windfall and unforeseen economic largesse in peace and tranquility. He should, at best, represent his people of Bende Federal Constituency; and if he chooses, the larger legitimate interests of Ndigbo.

One thing he must not do is to imagine that he can threaten Ndigbo into political submission. It won’t work, it has never worked; not on Ndigbo.
Finally, Benjamin Kalu is encouraged to remain abreast of the Nwanza fable.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers in the House of Representatives have accused some party leaders of a covert plot to sabotage the PDP’s interests in the ongoing legal battle involving defected lawmakers.

The accused are the party’s acting National Chairman, Mr Umar Iliya Damagun, and National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

The Lawmakers made their feeling know on Saturday during a press conference.

They accused two party leaders of a covert plot to sabotage the PDP's interests in an ongoing legal battle involving defected former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The Lawmakers said the move was part of efforts to betray their own party, destroy all legal efforts and aid the pro-Wike APC elements to have the legal backing to attempt their impossible plot of removing the PDP government led by Gov Siminalayi Fubara out of Office.

The Leader of the group, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, member of the House of Representatives, representing Ideato Federal Constituency, described the move as a calculated attempt by Damagum and Anyanwu to weaken the PDP.

"This is also to undermine its legal standing in a high-profile court case that will see pro-Wike sacked APC lawmakers gaining legal ground to attempt to force PDP government out of office," he added.

According to him, some of the leaders were opposing the National Legal Adviser move to ensure that the pro-Wike-sacked APC lawmakers who decamped from the PDP are neutralised.

Ugochinyere urged them to stopped from doing any harm to PDP interests, adding that some leaders of the party were working in favour of the lawmakers to help them regain legitimacy.

The case, marked PHC/2177/CS/2024, centres on a dispute over the defection of 27 PDP members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on December 11, 2023.

Ugochinyere explained that the Rivers State High Court had previously issued an ex parte order on July 8, 2024, restraining key state officials from interacting with the defected lawmakers.

He further alleged that former Governor Nyesom Wike, in what he described as an "anti-party" manoeuvre, retained Dr. J.Y. Musa, SAN, to file an unauthorized appeal against this order, despite opposition from the PDP's National Legal Adviser, Mr. Ajibade, SAN.

"The National Legal Adviser, constitutionally empowered to protect the interests of the PDP, had already moved to withdraw the appeal on July 24, 2024, recognizing its potential harm to the party," Ugochinyere stated.

"However, in a shocking turn of events, on August 15, 2024, Damagum and Anyanwu sent a letter to the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, dissociating themselves from the withdrawal, effectively undermining the Legal Adviser’s authority.

"PDP has come to stand united in the face of this betrayal. .

"We call on all members of the PDP and well-meaning Nigerians to join us in defending the integrity of our party and ensuring that justice prevails," he said

Primary Healthcare: CSOs urge for creation of private sector engagement unit in Ebonyi

A cluster of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Health System Strengthening Cluster (HSSC) has advocated for creation of Private Sector Engagement Unit in the Primary Healthcare Department (PHC) of 13 Ebonyi councils.

The CSOs noted that such move could help to achieve more efficient and effective service delivery system and improve quality healthcare for the citizens.

Our correspondent reports that the cluster comprises of six CSOs on the Scale project, a USAID-funded 5-year project from Oct. 2020 to Oct. 2025.

The project is being implemented by Palladium in collaboration with Nigeria Resource Partners (RPs).

Mr Chiemezie Ezeani, Program Manager of an NGO, Life Transformation for Africa initiative (LIFT4AFRICA), gave the advice on Friday during a media roundtable with reporters in Abakaliki.

Ezeani explained that the roundtable meeting was aimed at harnessing issues with stakeholders towards achieving quality healthcare delivery through creation of a budget line for Integrated Supportive Supervision (ISS) in collaboration with private sector in Ebonyi.

"Our advocacies include: the creation of ISS in with the 2025 Budget of Ebonyi state and releases.

"Establishment of an Integrated Supportive Supervision Technical Working Group (ISS-TWG) and establishment of A Private Sector Engagement Unit in the PHC Department of LGAs.

"The private sector will work and assist in mobilizing resources for ISS activities as well as integration of all Health Facilities supervision activities to save cost," Ezeani added.

On ISS, the Manager said, it is an intervention that facilitates quality improvement by ensuring adequate oversight as well as skills and knowledge transfer to health care service providers.

"ISS helps in strengthening of health care system. Enhances quality service delivery. Improves performances. Encourages open, two-way communications. Enhancing team building spirit. Problem solving," he stated.

It recalls that state Commissioner for Health, Dr Moses Ekuma had said that the government of Ebonyi was ready to partner with the Life Transformation for Africa Initiative to increase supervision of healthcare facilities for the people.

Confusion in Court as three Lawyers claim to represent PDP, National Officers

The crack in the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) National Working Committee has widened as the party and some of its national officers appointed legal representatives in favour of pro Nyesom Wike faction of the party.

This played out at the hearing of Suit, No: FHC/ABJ/CS/1016/2024 BETWEEN HON. AARON CHUKWUEMEKA DSSRS & 5ORS V. PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP) & 9ORS before his Lordship Honourable Justice P.O Lifu of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

Justin Lifu was sitting as a vacation judge on Thursday when the drama ensued with three Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) laying claim being the party's legal counsel.

The three SANs all claimed to be the legitimate counsel to represent the PDP, Amb. Umar Iliya Damagum ( Acting National Chairman, PDP), Sen. Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu (National Secretary, PDP) and Umar M. Bature (National Organizing Secretary, PDP) sued as the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Defendants respectively.

It was gathered that the Plaintiffs in this suit are part of the pro-Wike group of the Party in Rivers State and current members of the Caretaker -Committees of the party at the state level and various local government areas and wards in Rivers State.

Immediately the case was called, K.C. Njanze announced his appearance for the Plaintiffs, while A.K. Ajibade, (SAN), announced his appearance for the 1st to 4th Defendants, the party and its National Officers sued in their official capacity as the National Chairman, National Secretary and the National Organizing Secretary of the party respectively.

Mr Ajibade, who is the National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) noted that his appearance was in line with the powers conferred on him by Article 42 (1) of the Constitution of the peoples Democratic party as amended, 2017.

Shockingly, after A K. Ajibade, (SAN), the National Legal Adviser of the party announced appearance for the party and its National Officers, Ferdinand Oshoke Orbih (SAN) also announced appearance for the Peoples Democratic Party on the basis that he was instructed by one Kingsley Chuku.

The said Mr Chuku is a member of the current Caretaker-Committee in Rivers State and a known ardent supporter of Mr Nyesome Wike, the current FCT Minister.

Before the court could recover from the confusion created by double representation announced by two Learned Senior Counsel for the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), another senior counsel S.I. Ameh (SAN) announced appearance for Damagun, Anyanwu and Bature claiming that he was instructed by the trio to represent them.

The court, embarrassed by the attitude of the Learned Senior Counsel described as shameful a situation where senior three senior counsels will be jostling and shoving for brief in open court.

He advised the wo external counsel to go back and have a meeting with the National Legal Advisers of the party so as to resolve the issue of representation before the next adjourned date.

He thereafter adjourned the matter to August 30 2024.

Obeji, while felicitating with Mrs Nwifuru in a statement forwarded to Eye Witness Correspondent in Abakaliki, commended her various interventions in uplifting the lives of children, women, and the most vulnerable people, especially those in the rural areas, through her pet project, Better Health for Rural Women, Children, and Internally Displaced Foundation, code name BERWO.

The Chairman of the Ebonyi state Scholarship Board, Chief Chaka Nweze has said that Governor Francis Nwifuru's leadership ingenuity is the reason why the ongoing hunger protest across the country did not take place in Ebonyi.

Nweze, the Chairman of Nwifuru's Campaign Council in Ohaozara Local Government Area (LGA) during the 2023 general elections said in an interview that the governor's good governance and general acceptance by the people, dissuaded the people from participating in the protest.

The Former Chairman of Ohaozara LGA of Ebonyi said that protest can only thrive in an environment where the leaders are not responsive to the yearnings of the people as Ebonyi's case is different.

"Ebonyi people are lucky to have a governor who mixes proctiveness with passion to serve the people and when such attributes are lacking in leadership, the people will have cause to complain.

"The governor convened a stakeholders/ youth summit where all segments of the state were inaundated with his policies and actions so far in office which should not be derailed by any breakdown of law and order.

"Having realised that the peace model set by the governor has greatly benefited the state, the people at the summit, acknowledged the negative tendencies that any form of protest can bring to the state.

"They are aware that protests in this clime are easily hijacked by hoodlums whose stock in trade is wanton looting and destruction of both public and private facilities.

"Ebonyi cannot afford such occurrences at a period it has become the pride and envy of other states due to its infrastructural strides that cannot be seen in any part of the country.

"Unscrupulous elements might capitalise on such opportunities to.perpetuate mayhem and destroy facilities that took the state painstaking financial prudence to establish."

The Former Vice Chairman of the Association of Local Government Areas of Nigeria (ALGON) Ebonyi state chapter, noted that the.clairvoyance of the government and people of Ebonyi has been greatly vindicated with reports of killings, looting and destruction of properties in some parts the country.

"We have witnessed mayhem in the name of protests despite the fact that President Bola Tinubu has duly addressed Nigerians over the protest.

"Ebonyi has been peaceful, no protest, no killing, looting or destruction of properties as the people have been going about their lawful businesses, united under the endearing leadership of a pragmatic leader.".

He noted that the pearless foresight of the governor in uniting alll.political and social leaders of Ebonyi has proven to be a master-stroke as all shades of opinion are now merged progressively and developmentally under one roof.

"We now have leaders ably supporting the governor and moving in directions that consolidate on past achievements and desire to move the state forward.

"Mischief makers can leverage on dissenting inclinations to disrupt an efficient system, in the guise of political affiliations or opposition.

"The people have seen the wondrous works of the governor from employment of civil servants, offset of arrears of pension and gratuities owed workers, employment of health personnel in the general hospitals across the state, empowerment of youths and the vulnerable, massive infrastructural strides among others,"

Nweze also praised the governor for sustaining the father and son relationship which exists between him and his mentor---- the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi as such endearing relationship has benefitted the state tremendously.

"As leaders of the south east geo-political zone of the country, both the governor and the minister were unwavering in urging Ebonyi and south east people to shun the protest.

"Such harmonious relationship between people at the top, brings peace, unity, conviviality, progress and development to a society and the people would always wish for such leaders and synchronisation in leadership.

"It is said that when two elephants fight, the grass suffer and it can also be said that when two elephants are at peace, the grass will revel and blossom in peace,"

He noted that to show his sterling leadership qualities, the governor duly thanked the people especially youths for following wise counsel and shunning the protest.

"To show his appreciation, the governor has pledged to empower 1,300 youths across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state with one million Naira each to grow their businesses.

"Each LGA will produce 100 youths
as the governor extolled their high sense of responsibility and interest in the progress and development of the state.

"This is the kind of leadership the people will see and they will not listen to anyone who tells them to protest or cause disharmony."

The National Coordinator, Women Arise for Tinubu, Princess Obiageli Onu has pleaded with protesters across the country to immediately stop the protest due to its present destructive dimension.

Onu who is also the State Woman Leader, Ndigbo in All Progressives Congress (APC) Lagos, said on Monday that the loss of lives and destruction of properties across the country was unnecessary.

The woman leader said it was unfortunate that despite efforts made by stakeholders to disuade the protesters from embarking on the protest, it still went on.

"I specifically spoke with women, urging them not to join the protest and ensure that their children and relatives refrain from it.

"We realise that protest is a constitutional right of citizens but equally know the nature of our society and the dangerous dimension such events can take.

"We have been vindicated presently with reports of loss of lives and destruction of properties across the country,"

Onu then appealed to the protesters to immediately stop the protest as President Bola Tinubu has heard and addressed Nigerians.

"The president reeled efforts made by his administration to revamp the economy and appealed for time to ensure their implementation and manifestation.

"The protesters might not be too satisfied with contents of the address but destruction is not the best approach for their demands to be met.

"The protesters should find constructive ways of ensuring their demands are met as the president is a father who listens to his children."

She noted that the situation was however, not irredeemable because such protest was not restricted to Nigeria.

"We are presently seeing waves of protest across the the world and this shows that Nigerians are not the only people experiencing economic hardship.

"It is presently clear that peaceful protests can be hijacked by hoodlums for destructive purposes and that it why the present one across the country should stop immediately."

The Nigeria 10th National Assembly, the Senate, and the House of Representatives have revealed that its members have introduced about 522 bills, while 27 were passed into law in just one year.

The leaders of the national assembly include the Senate President, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudden Abbas.

It was revealed that over 50 public petitions have been successfully resolved in the period under review.

"In the pursuit of a stronger Nigeria, 27 bills have been enacted into law, while others are at various stages of the legislative process.

"The Senate has read 275 bills, with 135 awaiting. Among these, only 40 originated from the executive, while about 464 bills are being driven by the private members, the citizens.

"The youths should always think while checking facts and be fair to the government.

"It's high time we remember the Access to Higher Education Act. The interest-free student loan initiative by the federal government. The recent minimum wage bill, lifting the minimum wage to from N30,000 to N70,000.

"Also consider the CBN amendment bill, rising credit facility obtainable by the federal government. Ensuring our nation's financial engine continues to run smoothly. 

"Let us always know that the National Assembly is shaping the future of the nation. The National Assembly is committed to positioning Nigeria to its original standard," it stated.

A University Don, Prof Ikechuku Igwenyi, Ebonyi State University (EBSU), has reacted to the Sunday National broadcast by President Bola Tinubu on the ongoing nationwide hunger protest in some states of the federation.

It recalls that Tinubu's broadcast centred majorly on his policies on fuel subsidy removal, revamping the nation’s battered economy, education, the labour force and infrastructural development of the country.

Igwenyi in his write up, entitled: "I pity Mr President and the presidency" was released on Sunday in Abakaliki.

According him, I pity Mr President because it is not easy to be the President of Nigeria due to its diverse cultures, clannish and ethnic interests, primordial sentiments, religious affiliations, the Federal Character, agents of foreign interests and the effects of the civil war that have not been properly addressed till present.

"In my place, it is said that when someone else is wrestling, it is easier for spectators to say, "carry his leg" as if it's that easy and not knowing that the wrestler is actually suffocating and getting exhausted.

"Successive governments have come up with sound economic policies but we had challenged them, organised similar protests, campaigned against them even in churches, criticized government economic policies and yet, have not helped matters in our small corners.

"Hopes have been dashed in the past, promises made and not fulfilled, agreements reached without implementation and almost all those who proposed the Renewed Hope were the same persons who came with the Change concept we wished for and embraced with open arms.

"It becomes difficult to believe that something good can come from Nazareth," he added.

Igwenyi, however commended Mr. President for coming out to address the nation.

He said the the President address became necessary and noted that one positive point scored in the broadcast is that he has spoken to Nigerians and expressed himself to the best of his capacity.

"We now know he is pained by the loss of lives, destruction of properties, and the precarious conditions we have found ourselves.

"I am personally glad he appreciates that there are people with clear political agenda and bigots, who want to tear this nation apart.

"Some taking undue advantage of situations to threaten a section of this country. Part of our problem as a nation is the abrogation of History in our schools.

"We have had protests in the past and have never taken time to study the dynamics to elucidate the remote and immediate causes as well as the reasons we failed to protect lives and properties in otherwise perceived peaceful protests.

"Our leaders should have known the consequences of removing fuel subsidy and how to balance or cushion the effect. Meanwhile, removal of subsidy was a bold step in national economic recovery but the big question is how much subsidy was removed and how much was recovered.

"How was the money spent or invested because it is an economic fortune. Was it not supposed to be ploughed back to make our refineries work and put an end to the export of our crude oil and importation of refined products? These are reasons people believe it is a scam.

"In point of fact, most government policies are fantastic on paper and in the televisions but the real beauty lies in their practical implementation and impact on the people and the society at large.

"Revenue may have doubled, productivity increased in the non-oil sectors, debts serviced and probably incurred but Nigerians are more concerned on how the big grammer spoken are transformed into concrete goods and services for the common good and benefit of Nigerian in the streets.

"It is worthy of note to state that the END BAD GOVERNANCE PROTEST was caused by economic harship and bad leadership. The intended goals are to reverse bad and harsh economic reforms, both inherited and of the present government that plunged us into this hunger, insecurity and economic quagmire.

"Bad governance has led to economic retrogression, social instability, injustice and deprivations, intimidation, corruption, loss of public trust in government, high cost of living due to uncontrolled inflation, abuse of power, lack of access to affordable healthcare services as people drop dead every other day and general insecurity (of food, kidnapping, herdsmen attack, communal wars, insurgencies, etc).

There is no rule of law and people are so frustrated that they commit suicide while others have come to the conclusion that the safest place in Nigeria today is the correctional centres (prisons) where food and security are guaranteed for inmates.

"These conditions have made it difficult for government to fulfil their responsibilities and obligations to the people and it has accasioned this public outcry and protest against suppression of public opinions," the Don added.

Igwenyi said that it's worth to recall that the present economic hardship was caused by a few actions and inactions of government that are difficult to address either by lack of political will or because those gain from the prevailing system do not want a positive change in the status quo that would make Nigeria work for everyone.

He noted that one of the major triggers of this protest was the fuel subsidy removal, which came with a multiplier effect emanating from increased pump price of petroleum products and its direct effect on transportation, inflation, communication and health.

"The story is not clear to Nigerians as there is no transparency in the implementation.

"The second issue is high cost of living and food scarcity occasioned by herdsmen attacks and insurgencies in the North-East and Southern Nigeria. Farmers have been kidnapped, killed or expelled from their farmlands leading to food shortage and scarcity, which is a predisposing factor to imminent malnutrition in the country, if not mitigated now.

"The third is wage disparity that has eroded the middle class in Nigeria, creating a wide gap between rich and the poor.

"Democracy taught us that we have the People first before the government. Therefore, government is for the people but a situation where the three arms of government isolate and insulate themselves from the people does not speak well of democracy.

"The wages of the Executives, the Legislature and Judiciary are outrageous while the labourers who work the system with their sweat and blood live in abject poverty and penury. The three arms protect themselves with security personnel (Army, Police, etc) while the people are allowed to their fate, at best given the approval to raise their own security in the form of the so-called Vigilante groups, whose sphere of influence ends at the doorstep of the least government agent.

"The civil servants, teachers and university lecturers, who generate and drive the economy are enslaved and paid slavish salaries, which are taken back with high tariff, taxes, levies and market forces. The next is high cost of governance and lack of transparency in administration.

"Elective positions and government appointments should be reduced to public service and paid as such. Elected and appointed public servants do not have any reason to feel threatened by those who loved them so much to elect them into executive and leadership positions, to the extent of surrounding themselves with security personnel and depriving the people of the security agents employed to secure lives and properties.

"These are some of the issues and Nigerians expect that all attached Police and Military personnel should be withdrawn and made professionals in the dispensation of justice and protection of our territorial integrity.

"The will make elected and appointed public servants accountable to their people. This will help to reduce high cost of governance as well as abolishment of purchasing expensive cars for these political office holders, who are supposed to be accomplished men and women before getting into such offices.

"This will bring sanity and the much desired public/Civil service reform beginning from Local to Federal government. Unfortunately, these issues have not been abated and they constitute roadblocks to democratic dividends and economic growth and development of Nigeria, and I deed Africa.

"They are triggered by lack of self-confidence and defections, political competition, greed, rivalries and lack of social justice. There is lack of proper oversight, accountability and self-cleansing mechanisms for checks and balances, and implementation of unfair policies and deceptions leading to a failed State, poor economic growth, abuse of human rights and corruption. These have led to misrule, mismanagement and maladministration.

"It is at this point I will say that the address of the President fell short of expectations as the triggers were not properly addressed to the satisfaction of Nigerians and in a way to restore hope or renew our hope, otherwise the protesters would have dispersed and wait for the reversal or implementation of such workable palliative policies.

"There is need to accept that the world is facing depression and we can trace it to a beginning and think out of the box as an independent and sovereign nation. Our problems are multidimensional and I had expected Mr President to disaggregate them, place them on a scale of preference and come up with a workable priority, based on available resources, that are implementable as a way to assuad the people's grief and pains.

"There is multidimensional hunger and social instability. #endsars# issues have not been satisfactorily addressed and there is unemployment in the land, general insecurity, food scarcity, high tariff on Power that is even epileptic, VAT and taxation issues. Yes, it's good that the President has signed the Minimum wage of ₦70,000:00k to law but it's also good to know that the wage cannot buy a bag of rice today in Nigeria and there is no measure to check inflation. How can a family survive in an economy where there is unprecedented unemployment and job insecurity?

"If the minimum wage cannot buy a bag of rice, how far can it go in taking care of health and social bills, school fees, house rent, mobility, communication, care of parents and dependents, not to talk of community development. It makes no meaning when other basic needs are not affordable due to harsh and coarse economic policies.

"Due to overdependence on oil, which has aggravated this problems, one palliative solution would have been to revitalize our refineries and give Dangote the ease of doing business so as to crash down the pump price of petroleum products.

"The turnaround maintenance of our refineries would have given our local economy a boost rather than a fresh interest and massive investment in Compressed Natural Gas to power our transportation economy, considering the economies of production, storage and delivery, associated hazards, conversion cost and overall cost of implementation. This is a good policy but the timing and other considerations may not give us the desired effect.

"On the broadcast, it was obvious that the request made by Mr. President was enjoining protesters to suspend the protest and create room for dialogue.

"My worry is in the immortal words of Martin Luther King, who said that "peaceful protest for civil rights would lead to sympathetic media coverage and public opinion". Government is always adamant to public opinion. Government is not always proactive because organisations and Nigerians have been crying out since subsidy removal.

"NLC and TUC have their issues with it. ASUU is threatening industrial actions over an agreement reached since 2009 with several Memoranda of Understanding and Memoranda of Action that have not been implemented. Secondary and Primary aschool Teachers have their issues.

"Market women and Farmers are complaining. People are expelled in their communities and live IDP camps in their own country where we have the Armed Forces under oath to protect them and the properties. Government will never engage them effectively until when they take to the streets or embark on industrial action.

"ASUU has been crying out on the level of dilapidation and decadence in public tertiary institutions and instead of looking at he merit just as past government did in setting up NEED ASSESSMENT PROGRAMME and funding education for revitalization, the Government is comitting a huge amount of money to Student Education Loan, which will not add any value to infrastructural development, provision of teaching aids, laboratory consumables, hostels, library and recreational facilities, staff development and secure the welfare of staff and students.

"The dangers inherent in this Student Education Loan outweighs the benefits and the worse is that those who are directly affected by such policies (lecturers and students) were not carried along in the decision making.

"The Student Loan has been described as strangulating and capable of subjecting beneficiaries to life of slavery to loan repayment with consequences for suicidal ends but despite the public outcry, Government has not reneged but gone ahead to implement it and process funds for disbursement, not minding the consequences and the difficulty in loan recovery in Nigerian economy.

"In fact, the Consumer credit Corporation is a good idea, Digital and Creative Enterprise is a wonderful plan, Skilled-up Artisans Programme sounds good, Nigerian Youth Academy and National Youth Talent Export Programme are laudable as well as MSME hubs.

"The big question is how to monitor and integrate them into a workable solution. These are long term projects. Giving incentives to farmers like fertilisers does not guarantee availability of seeds, safety on the roads, security in the farms, excruciating taxes and levies, peace in communities and inflationary trends in the markets. The roads are not safe and not all Nigerians can afford flight tickets.

"This is the time to go back to the drawing table, get our political economists to work, engage with our lawyers, University lecturers, youth organisations, farmers, students organisations, religious leaders and traditional rulers, all stakeholders and all concerned so that we can come out with a workable political solution and economic master plan with a local content for Nigeria. Unfortunately, we assign less that 10% of our national budget to Education as well as

"Research,.innovation and development. Two party system is the best for us and a review of our Constitution is necessary to provide the legal framework for a new Nigeria. Public service and judicial reforms are necessary. Ease of doing business and patronage of local goods such as Innoson Vehicles, local rice and food products will encourage and promote local production. Special Advisers, Technical Advisers and other government Aids should leave the offices and go to the field. We can start afresh because it's better Kate than never. Let us have a renewed hope and consciousness that everyone is born equal and that no animal is more equal than the other.
