Funding story part 1, I hope it helps i'll post using schools I applied to, I posted my visa transcript on the Visa thread.

Getting funding is an individual race and one that you can't compare your case with that of another applicant. I made some mistakes during my application such as applying to some sets of schools based on 'follow-follow' and how they funded people on here during the Fall 16 cycle, I also was obstinate for a while I didn't want to write TOEFL because then there were bants that naija was a english speaking country, mail they'll waive it and other stuffs ' see me, see app fees and others dey burn' and I also applied to some schools that didn't require identifying a potential professor.

I applied to 5 schools Louisiana State University, University of South Florida, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, University of Rhode Island, Univeristy of Southern Mississippi.

Louisiana State Univeristy : I applied to this school basically because of the funding some of the egbons here got and it was soft, it was the second school I applied to and I got an early admission (october). I was told to fill a departmental pre-application before application and I was so foolish to put the 'trending' area of research as the area I was least interested in. I shoot myself for leg. I started mailing profs, see cool story everywhere!. I didn't feel bad until February when I aw a prof advertising position for MS in a department that admitted me. June two other professors advertised! I felt really bad, although I applied for a GA position for a Data analyst role I was among the 3 people shortlisted but I didn't get the position after the MTN data consuming skype interview. (them still dey send me graduate newsletter with GA positions I just say he be like dem no like naija)

University of South florida: The first school i applied to, I was asked to contact prospective advisors before applying and there was also a department pre-application form where you are to choose at least 3 people as advisors that you have communicated with. Naso I choose one based on say we get better rapport. It was the LSU interview that confirmed that though they are nice they can still sly you ooooh, better sly. I waited for over two months after the USF decision date, no word, no word, just got a generic mail. REJECT!

Long story later:, funding gist, funding interviews, funding hunting techniques 101, mailing, shout out and general tips.. 

Now it's about my interview, 6:30am lagos consulate. No sleep from 2am. Everything you need on the interview is here but it's not stated that you should not over prepare like me and be ready to give simple straight answers and not trying to define super complex experiment.

Me: I'll be going to nicholls state University 
V. O: where is this school? 
Me: Thibodaux, Louisiana 
V. O: how did you know about this school? 
Me: I applied to schools close to the coast, used online resources and the American fisheries society informed me about their research 
Vo: why schools close to the coast? 
Me: Because of the nature of the my program and research , so I applied to school at Louisiana and Mississippi
Vo: what area of research is that
Me: wetland restoration 
Vo: tell me about it 
Me: it's part of the Louisiana master plan 2017 ( war start here, she focus on me big time, that look strong, I reset!!), it's a project between Louisiana state University and nicholls state University. 
Vo: no tell me about the project 
Me: (still on hard reset), it's divided into 3 phases : one field study and two green house experiments, it involves artifical sedimentation... 
Vo: which school did you graduate from 
Me: University of Lagos, akoka
Vo: which course 
Me: marine sciences 
Vo: which other school did you apply to
Me: Louisiana state University, University of Southern Mississippi, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
Vo: are you single 
Me: yes 
Vo: I see you have an assistantship tell me about it
Me: asides the project with my major professor, I'll be assisting with freshmen lab after which I have taken 18 hours, in my final 2 semesters I'll handling 2 courses 
Vo: do you know the age of students you'll be teaching
Me: naija mentality, 16
Vo: 16..(she laugh)
Me: my major professor told me freshmen
Vo: who would be paying the remaining balance
Me: my mum
Vo:what does she do
Me: deputy director of education at lagos State 
Vo: You'll be needed this at the point of entry, I'll be approving your visa, 'white paper' 
Me: thank you 
Vo: happy birthday in advance

Hardest part is when the vo takes the conversation from you and begins investigation, the eye thing is the removal of battery to the mind. I no try. I didn't mention pertinent areas of the project, my funding paved the way most likely , I was used to Skype interview were the prof gives you the floor, baba blue my today no be small..... All in all na baba God

Lasuth still doesn't have but if you're on the Island Axis, you can try Doren Hospital (08023062100) in Ajah or Louismed Hospital (08130101759) in Lekki Phase one and the cost in both places is N6000. I did mine in Louismed sha. Note that the vaccine is taken in 2 doses (30 day interval), so have that in mind while making your preparations

School said we can do lab proof that we have been vaccinated before. The rubella vaccine must be taken 28 days after the M&M vaccine. Pls do you know how much it cost?

I have the ETS. infact i bought it twice because the first mule wasn't going to arrive on time. so i have 2 sets

I bought the Barrons because i have read on MANY GRE sites that if you want to have a 99th percentile score, you get the official ETS guide plus 1 more. Barrons was poorly recommended but i know someone who used it only and got 312 (started in Johns Hopkins last month).

I actually haven't thought of printing Manhattan books...might try that. Great idea!

can I get one sir, also note that performance on the test is a function of practice, use magoosh, Manhattan and if you have money you can purchase the Manhattan 6 tests and take other free test... Princeton 2018 and the rest

Good you have something, instead of buying Barron on konga, you should have bought ets official guide and they are both 3.5k at yaba. To get Manhattan materials although it's against copyright rules, you can print the pdf copies in any campus, printing rates are low on campus. It won't cost up to 7k for the 8 books and 5lb

get a good book that has a lot of gre words, finish the book or a graduate level book, there is one I just came across and it's really great. 'the Military writings of Mao Tse Tsung. Or read economist and nytimes everyday, take note of the words and learn how to apply them.

I don't think there is any format expect the big bosses here have one. But I could share some tips. 1) Take the standardized tests GRE & TOEFL get good scores. 2) check school ranking and program ranking 3) check admission policy e.g No advisor with funding No admission 4) Check test scores and GPA requirements 5) Check priority deadline 6) Mail to ask for preferred test scores or average test scores from the previously admitted class 7) write a standard Sop, Cv and make your REFEREES normal human being.

At some point you'll know when things are going your, maybe if the program has a departmental pre application form and they give you the nod to apply or you apply for a research position, conduct a video or phone interview with the prof and he gives you a nod, or at some point during application you get an interview.

Safe school no safe again, as the process dey go. Men dey learn... Stay sharp, stay safe... Follow who know road

@Time2Smile, after exhaustively digesting your post on how to get high gre scores. I can't help but pay obeisance for a well crafted work and great strides acheived. I am opinionated of the great resourcefulness of the post, nevertheless I am quite nonplussed and vacillated about how long it took to secure admission with funding, considering your excellence gre scores. I do have the profound and recondite belief that superb scores in the gre and toefl tests coupled with good gpa score should suffice enough for admission and funding, now my precept wavers since it seems likely that arduous stress is reqiured for admission and funding even with excellent scores. I would be most gracious if you can pedantically extirpate why this is so, as you have always munificently do. Once, again congratulations on your admission to one of the most prestigious university. I have been accepted to the Molecular and Cell Biology PhD program of The University of Texas at Dallas with a Graduate Tuition Scholarship that covers all tuition and fees. In addition, I will receive a very generous stipend through Graduate Teaching Assistantship.

I only contacted the Graduate coordinator on April 14 and submitted my application on May 1st when the schools were trying to play cello with my future.

I appreciate everyone that has been asking after my application status. It has been arduous, but the difficulty pales in comparison to the sweet taste of success. For those still expecting a decision, don't lose hope. #TeamFall2017 Yes we can.

Kaplan e no good for GRE health, maybe them online platform better but them books from 2012 edition to 2017 na the same thing with first set of questions difficulty level.

Referee's or references trims student's application. that's why most people apply to 5 max, when they could shoot to like 8-12 schools

Hello house, I have a question and I will appreciate each contribution.

I have been applying for a few years now (not in US Unis), the most difficult part of each application has always been the referees/getting references. I will have to call, send SMS and even send airtime. The rude and ascerbic remarks I have been subjected are teeming.

In fact, there was a particular situation that my application package was not complete and the window subsequently shut. Change referee ? He kept telling me he will do it. And also, these Profs only write a few lines and because of their massive ego they usually do not take kindly to one sending them pre-written literature to just copy/paste in the referee page. My question is - What are the consequence(s) of setting up a (or two) bogus email address and inputting such in the application page as the referee contact ( ofcourse work/institution email) . And since one has unfettered access to such email address, I can reply to my reference request at my convenience and in a sterling manner too ?

The collabo squad that bought the premium magoosh should try to buy a Manhattan 4th edition book to get access to the 6 tests which according to bants are one of the best predictors of study level and possible test scores.

study for GRE, get above 300, use Petersons and hotcourses abroad to search for schools. Build contacts with schools and poi. Then you're few months away from getting funding + admission.

Those are links to magoosh full premium videos. They are same with the ones you'll pay for and you'll use almost same data to watch or even more. You can practice all magoosh questions in GRE.kmf.com

But if you can afford the magoosh, pay for one month. Download these videos and watch well and use the one month subscription to do all question sets on their site.

Or just go for the 6 months subscription.

All in All, you can prep with or without magoosh. Manhattan books are everywhere, ets og and workbooks, cracking the GRE by Princeton, Nova GRE course prep are good materials. At least there is a popular YouTube guy that got perfect score and said he used only barron.

Start prep while you can and with what you have. *standard*... I'm actually thinking this belief of using magoosh adds to confidence which is good for the exam
