US: Atiku Abubakar In $40 Million Money-Laundering

Feb 3, 2010 · A United States Senate report has accused Atiku Abubakar, Nigeria’s former Vice-President, of laundering over $40 million in suspicious funds into the United States between 2000 and 2008. And his partner in the lucrative effort was Jennifer Douglas, his fourth wife.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP)
A formerLouisiana congressman who famously hid $90,000 cash in his freezer was sentenced Friday to 13 years in prison for taking bribes, the longest term ever imposed on a congressman for bribery charges.

William Jefferson, a Democrat who represented parts of New Orleans for nearly 20 years, was convicted in August of taking roughly $500,000 in bribes and seeking millions more in exchange for using his influence to broker business deals in Africa.

The sentence was still far less than the nearly 30 years prosecutors had sought.

Agents investigating the case found $90,000 wrapped in foil and hidden in boxes of frozen pie crusts in his freezer.

"Public corruption is a cancer on the body politic," said Ellis, who lamented that so many other congressmen have been convicted on similar charges. "There must be some sort of greed virus that attacks those in power."

The investigation started in March 2005. In August of that year, FBI agents searched Jefferson's Washington home and found the cash. Prosecutors said he had planned to use the money to pay a bribe to the then vice- president of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, to secure a multimillion-dollar telecommunication deal
there.

The money ended up in the freezer after a disgruntled businesswoman, Lori Mody, agreed to wear a wire after telling the FBI she had been cheated out of $3.5 million in deals brokered by Jefferson. The jury saw videotape of Mody handing over a suitcase filled with $100,000 cash outside an Arlington hotel. Most of that money was recovered from the freezer.

The defense argued that Jefferson was acting as a private business consultant in brokering the deals and his actions did not constitute bribery.

Jurisdiction issue I believe.
But the Chief Justice of the federal high court has transferred Dino's case to the high court in Abuja so there should be any jurisdiction issue, this what makes the whole thing suspicious n questionable.

Dino was invited twice but refused to honour the invitations. The police wrote the senate President to produce him for interrogation but Saraki would not agree.
The police then secured valid arrest warrant and he resisted arrest. He even escaped before being recaptured.

What else do we want the police to do?
so why did they wanted to take him to kogi by force when he can be arraign n prosecuted in Abuja?.

Era of impunity is over. At least not with this government.

What on earth should make an indicted senator walk free while common citizens who are not even indicted get treated like criminals?

It's disgusting to see youths whose life has been wrecked by the useless politicians coming to the defense of their oppressors, all in the name of hateful politics.

For crying out loud, Melaye has been indicted in a murder case. He should clear his name. Attempting to escape from lawful arrest is another big offence for which he must be treated worse. In many countries, he will be shot dead for that stunt.

Youths should stop being intellectually lazy for once.
The Chief Justice of the federal high court has transferred Dino's case to Abuja, dino is willing n ready to be tried in Abuja why does the police want to forcefully take Dino to lokoja?,the police could easily have written to the NASS leadership informing them of the allegations against Dino n the need for him to come forward to defend himself, the process may be slow but more effective n acceptable rather than this disgraceful drama by the government that calls to question the sincerity of the whole matter.

My candid view concerning this issue is that ,even if the goverment wants to deal with persons with alleged corrupt or criminal cases please let lay down rules be adhered to so that the process can remain credible, now if its really true that Dino's case has been transferred to Abuja why forcefully trying to take him to lokoja considering the frosty relationship between him n the state governor? this now raises the question of the pursue of a hidden predetermined agenda,we Nigerians are so quick to condemn with out considering facts,we are also use to acting non chalantly when we are not directly affected without considering who may be a victim next, one may hate dino, you may even laugh n make jest of him but can we confidently trust this buhari/Apc government?, I will not blame or castigate Dino but wait for more facts.

Jennifer Elizabeth Douglas, who has also gone by the names Jennifer Iwenjiora, Jamila Abubakar, and Jennifer Douglas-Abubakar, is the fourth wife of Atiku Abubakar. According to the Atiku Biography,Ms. Douglas was born in Nigeria as Jennifer Iwenjiora, worked as a television journalist at the Nigerian Television Authority, and dated Mr. Abubakar in the early 1980s, before leaving for the United States.

She lost touch with Mr. Abubakar while attending Howard University. She subsequently married in the United States, took the married name of Jennifer Douglas, and later divorced, becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen during this time period. Ms. Douglas eventually renewed her relationship with Mr. Abubakar who came to visit her in the United States. According to the Atiku Biography, from late 1995 to early 1998, while Sani Abacha was in power in Nigeria, Mr. Abubakar “spent most of his time in Maryland” with Ms. Douglas, making occasional visits to Nigeria.

Skipped a lot of paragraphs to the important bit on Page 190.

In December 2008, the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed criminal and civil pleadings alleging that Siemens AG, a major German company traded on the New York Stock Exchange, violated the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) by making bribery payments to obtain business in multiple countries, including Nigeria.

Siemens pleaded guilty to violating the books and record keeping provisions of the FCPA, and agreed to pay combined criminal and civil fines totaling more than $1.6 billion.
What are you calling unproven?:

One of the allegations in the SEC civil complaint against Siemens was that “approximately $2.8 million of the bribe payments was routed through a bank account in Potomac, Maryland, in the name of the wife of a former Nigerian Vice President.”

The Subcommittee has obtained wire transfer documentation substantiating this allegation, as explained below. Through her legal
counsel, however, Ms. Douglas denies any wrongdoing

https://www.hsgac.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/FOREIGNCORRUPTIONREPORTFINAL710.pdf
From your own write up,the purported money was paid through Jenifer Atiku's account, the said Jenifer however denied any wrong doing n you did not show where she was tried n found guilty, the said Siemens money was also supportedly paid to many persons so who are the other person's n has any of them been declared wanted, arrested or prosecuted?,some months back if my memory is right punch Newspaper made enquiries through the U S embassy in Nigeria whether Atiku had a pending legal issue in any U S court, the response was negative, besides if obasanjo knew Atiku was corrupt why did he choosed him as running mate in 1999 n also retained him in 2003?,the best you people can do is to get the U S to declare Atiku wanted for this your narrative to stick n be of any meaning at all, like I said n still insist yes Atiku may not be perfect but he has proven to be better by far in so many ramifications sentiments apart,to be the right man Nigeria needs now to pilot her affairs. It is now crystal clear that buhari was n is still just a product of propaganda n sentiments nothing else.Atiku may not eventually get the presidency but that wouldn't be anything new, Awo was certainly ahead of his contemporaries but never got the presidency only for Nigerians to cry later.

I don't agree with this submission, was it during this same makarfi that the Shari'a killings occur in kaduna in 2001?,was it not this same makarfi that said "if the Shari'a bill is presented before me I will sign it on the spot" in 2001?,by the way is it only persons from NW that are good enough from the north to rule this country?,despite all the fabricated but shamefully unproven accusations of corruption against Atiku orchestrated by obasanjo out of his ego n selfish reasons,to me Atiku still remains the best man for the job from the north right now, fairness n equity demands that somebody capable from the NE should also be given a chance to pilot the affairs of the country, capability n experience wise Atiku is not lacking,he may not be perfect just as there is none perfectly clean Nigerian politician available, the self deceiving false righteous buhari inclusive,Atiku has proven without doubt that managerial n social interactive wise he is more than equipped to handle the country, having lived schooled studied worked in the north n follow the northern politics closely,I'm convinced without a doubt that Atiku's popularity is not massive in the north as buhari simply because he is not considered to be a northern conservative die hard enough n therefore not believe to be willing to defend the "agenda" hard enough,if not for these I don't see a makarfi or any other politician from the north today standing up to Atiku.

Wealthandjobs:

I don't think so sir. No Senator has the right to suspend another Senator. The only authority to suspend a Senator is the constituents. This suspension is an aberration in democracy and it is the hangover of military mentality. It's illegal and immoral. Why on earth should Ilorin be represented and Delta central denied of representation? Is it the constituent that erred even if an error is committed? This nonsense has to stop and the courts should sanction any defaulting legislator and should be prosecuted after the expiration of his/her tenure. Their suspension is useless now because they can't physically bundle the Senator out of the Parliament.
Buhari doesn't have their time and he is not ready to share money so it's in their court now. The case of Jibrin is clear,he was part of those who padded the budget illegally,he doesn't have clean hands so he lost the moral authority.
if the suspended senator feels the suspension was illegal was it not better to approach the courts instead of this shameful act?, why can't those senators who feel suspension is undemocratic move a motion for amendment of Senate rules,i suppose the legal advice omo agege got was from sagay n malami n perhaps you.

I would have agreed with you but for points,i do not know of the nurses angle but even with that personally I feel the Bsc general nursing programme was a mistake instead it should have been that you get your RN general nursing then you go for BSC dental, orthopedic, psychiatric, optometric etc nursing, having said that I don't the issue is been paid equally with doctors but rather the guaranteed opportunity to rise to the pinacle of one's job,why must doctors want to head the medical lab, pharmacy etc departments in the hospitals when one can study up to professorial level in those fields?,the medical lab scientist or pharmacist can go and do one abridged related course n be allowed to head any of various medical departments so why are doctors doing same when there are so many branches of medicine for them to head?, on the issue of pay, almost all workers In US are paid higher than their Nigerian counterparts so on that basis everyone is right to complain but in practical terms this issue of foreign pay has to do with currency exchange rates, the pound sterling is stronger than the dollar so should the American doctors complain that they are paid lower than their British counterparts?,this mentality of doctors heading everything and excessive dominance is what is breeding all the unnecessary friction in the health sector at least I know that medical lab scientists and pharmacists and others now or in future will continue to resist it if the doctors are not call to order. Its the same case with ASUU blocking the granting of right to award at least just first degrees independently by colleges and other high institutions all for selfish reasons.

So all talk of herdsmen this, herdsmen that are all political but until we all decided as Nigerians to embrace the truth and stop backbitting on any administration then we can get to the promise land. what is going on in benue state now is never about herdsmen /farmers clash, the herdsmen /farmers clash title was simply smartly coined by those with the hidden agenda to justify their heinous agenda, now is dry season no farmiyis going on so which farmers are clashing with herdsmen?if it's grazing land Kano, Niger state, kogi has provided lands for grazing why are the herdsmen not moving there, the ongoing killings are5 just planned use of brutal force to forcefully subdue "stubborn Christian minorities "of the north into submission towards a total control of the north by Muslims and nothing more, when public hearings were organized towards the formation of the anti open grazing law in benue state instead of the so called herdsmen to go there and present their case they failed while openly threatening violence if eventually the law is made with nothing done by those who controls the security apparatus despite the state governor's cries, Nigerians are more interested in mocking the securities especially the police without attempting to find out their problems and calling for a change, the way the police is structured now will never encourage effectiveness, all police officers are supposed to be in the barracks for safety assurance, there are many cases of police officers families been attacked in their absence due to their duties n operations, the police are prohibited from using simple weapons as GPMG, RPG BLAST grenades etc because they are classified by archaic ordinance as military grade weapons ,couple with the absence of such essential devices such as drones, night vision goggles etc yet Nigerians expect the police to perform miracles while been faced by criminals with all sort of unrestricted armaments, the Nigerian military itself out of ego doesn't want the empowering of other security agencies just to make it look that they are the only ones capable, thanks to senator shehu sani for drawing attention to poor police finding, only those who don't care to find out the bitter will continue to blame the police but it's clear that there is the determined pursuit of a dangerous agenda going on in the country under this administration but political interests has cause many to care less until it becomes too late.
