One less idiotic banker to worry about. When you hear guys say most Nigerian girls are useless it sounds like an insult but it's the truth. They have this inbuilt foolishness.

Whether educated or not they reason same way. That question of "how did you get my number" is just so annoying. They won't even ask politely.

I was listening to a programme on radio sometime ago and the OAP called a girl to wish her happy birthday. The way she was talking was annoying so to avoid further embarrassment the guy had to open up that she was live on radio that someone asked him to call her to wish her happy birthday.....On realizing the damaged caused she changed like a chameleon immediately and started faking being nice. The OAP didn't even bother to waste his time by listening to her he just said " I am very sure your friend is listening, I have delivered his message. Do have a nice day"

If na me be that babe boyfriend I for break up with her dat day, she just showed the whole world that she isn't a wife material.....She disgraced herself that day on radio because of pride/foolishness.

This is the problem with most employers. They see every job seeker as a slave who deserves zero respect. What stopped the untrained HR 'god' from making an immediate proper introduction? Why would you call someone and start asking them their name when you haven't introduced yourself? It is pure security daftness to answer a personal question asked by a total stranger on the phone. That was how I was innocently picking and dropping one lady in my department in the office with my car, the very day I bought my car and start driving it to work, we actually stay one estate apart and I thought it wise since she ain't mobile, let me be helping her, of which my fiance knew and was was cool with, fast forward to after 3 months of constant picking her in the morning and dropping her after work at her gate,

I was so pissed and disgusted by her foolish comment, angry but i did not answer her though, I just smile at her, dropped her at her gate as usual and drove home, immediately I got home, aunty has called me like 4 miss call, I eventually retuned her call and she started apologizing for speaking out of tone, I told her not to worry that everywhere good, but that was the last I drove her in my car, up till date she still apologizing, but I no longer give a fvck, most Nigeria ladies thinks every guy always want to toast them. well I shocked her, because my girlfriend is 100 times more endowed and beautiful than her, what could I be wanting from her biko cheesy

The HR is at fault. Company do have their own standards operating procedure (s.o.p) now with what i know if am calling you i need to act professional which is

1) introduce myself
2) why am calling
3) am i speaking to mr xyz?
If the answer is yes then i will try to verify if is true or not

That could be any of the following
You full name, address next of kin

If HR cant do all of that then they have failed whole of hr professional.

Go and check youtube check cipd website or people management website. I am active cipd member

N.B: I want to let you know that professionally asking first if one can speak to XYZ before introduction is not a wrong move because a lot of job seekers have children, relative etc that might be in possession of the job seeker's phones at that moment...professionals in advanced countries know that..It's like an unwritten rules... You can research it if you like..
Besides, Introducing yourself one million times when you are speaking with the wrong individual could be tiring and exhausting.
By the way, I was not doubting your membership of cipd... Being a member of CIPD stops no professional from knowing phone manners/ professional conversation ethics..

She picked the call and blurted 'who's this?'

That is not the way to answer a call, especially from an unknown number.

Though it might be fictional, a number of ladies are actually that rude in reality. Yes, ladies especially.

Hopefully such people learn from the story.

Especially our ladies!

God!

I can say this happens to almost 80% of ladies! Very few of them have a descent approach to numbers they are not familiar with. Even if you are going to end up rejecting the call, do it with class and culture.

Many times, female clients do not store the given numbers of our service providers and as you are trying to identify yourself, you need to hear how they will be so brash--- as though you are some desperate toaster!

Meanwhile, I HAVE HARDLY HAD ISSUES OF THIS ISSUE WITH MALES. Some that are even uneducated.

Some Nigerians need to adopt the culture of being cultured while talking to strangers on phone. There are courteous ways of getting a wind of the person talking from the other end and assuming the call is an unwelcomed one, there are a thousand ways of ending the calls without hurting a fly. For instance instead of saying who's this, use "May I know who this is?"

I didn't bother to read through your analogy because I think your understanding is flawed. So you think I would just pick up a call and straight up ask "may I know who this is?" Don't you have an idea of how a phone conversation should progress...as in pleasantries before probing? Jeez!

God bless you! How some people think with all the stress we face with living in Nigeria, that we can accommodate drills of " sitting on the hot seat" like someone on "Who wants to be a Millionaire" show beats me.

You call someone without introducing yourself, and possibly goes ahead to ask the person to confirm his identity or location in these times of criminal/unlawful tracking; hypnotic calls etc and think you're justified to continue some senseless drills because you bear good tidings? Not a lot of people would be patient to see the end of such conversations.

Nonetheless, I am not sure I like it when asked "who's this?" as opposed to "may I know who's speaking?"

A lady I referred for a bank job in the first week of June got a call this morning to resume work at an Uyo branch of the said commercial bank. She was fortunate to be among the few applicants that were shortlisted from among a large pool of graduates who got interviewed for the jobs.
No, but she won't be resuming!

She finally lost the opportunity because of a phone call.
She had received the call in the early hours of today, 10:00am precise. It was from the HR department of the bank.

But she didn't say "hello".

Her first remark when she picked was "who's this?"

Before she got any other reply she added "how did you get my number?"

The HR person goes "Am I speaking to Miss xxxxxxx?"

She felt the question is unnecessary! And she gave her final response.

"Please if you don't want to introduce yourself get out of my phone" that was her final word!

I got a feedback from the HR by 12noon today and I listened to that conversation. Those kinds of phone calls are always recorded for reference purposes.

Aunty lost the job because she lacks Phone Conversations Etiquette! I listened to the recorded version of that conversation.

She lost the job because she believes every unknown male caller is a "chyker".

You see? After all it's not always because HR people are "despicable" as they have been labeled by Nigerians!

No, you are not completely right. The HR wanted to know if he was actually talking to the right person before introducing himself I guess. He asked if he was speaking to Ms so so so, she could have simply said yes and who am I speaking with please? That wouldn't hurt her at all.

If you call me for example and I don't know your number, What will it take me to say Hello richy4 speaking.. it's just like a default setting for me.... Then U will say hi to me by calling my name, then introduce yourself to me.... If due to certain reasons you forget to introduce yourself, thinking I know you and might recognize your voice... I will say may I know who is speaking please.... It's just common etiquette and manners.. she is mannerless.
That isn't your default setting. It is either you are a marketer, grew up with one or have been trained to answer stranger's call that way. Regular people don't introduce themselves to stranger's first. It is even a bad idea with the scale of insecurity and fraud going on in the country.

I'm glad that the experienced HR dictated it early.. there were lot of mannerless people in the bank those days especially in First Bank.. Imagine adding this one to their statistics... though I don't know if they were still like that.. .
Your "experienced" HR didn't detect anything but his bruised ego just like many people with authority in this country, he decided to "deal" with her as they normally do. If your model HR was a banker and was to secure a new account with a customer, the call will be very much different. He will certainly introduce himself first before confirming the identity of the call recipient. That HR needs retraining!

I don't care who you are, if you call and can't introduce yourself and I give you a chance to correct yourself and you still refuse, we have nothing to talk about.

Bro, I understand why you're pissed by her comment, but I don't think you should blame her much. Her behaviour was most likely influenced by experience. A lot of guys suddenly become nice to ladies they like to have a thing with without outrightly stating their intention. And when they finally do and get turned down, our dear nairaland people would blame the lady for being greedy by enjoying the goodies while pretending not to know the man's intent. Weird, I know, but this happens a lot. And I don't think this lady knew about your fiancee and had probably started developing feelings for you so she decided to know your mind, though maybe her presentation was f..u.cked up. In your shoes, I'd seat her down and explain to her that I have no ulterior motive and against what society says, some men can still be good to ladies for no other reason aside from being good people. She'd respect you a lot and appreciate your help a whole lot more after such a discussion. I have this issue with ladies myself, and just recently I had to help a lady understand this difference after I noticed she'd started to read meanings to the little assistances I offer her. She felt very embarrassed and kept apologising. We're cool now though.

Most HRs get this wrong.


For security reasons, you don’t have to call someone and start asking their names and whereabouts.

She lost the job because she believes every unknown male caller is a "chyker".

You see? After all it's not always because HR people are "despicable" as they have been labeled by Nigerians!

Why would a Homosapien answer a phone call like this in the year 2020AD?

Even assuming (for argument) the veracity of the story, she has the right to know who’s calling...
And even if she was rude (which admittedly is NOT good), the HR caller is OBLIGATED to identify himself.

Which HR you guys dey do for Nigeria? When HR call the 1st thing tney do is introduced themselves and reasons for calling befor proceedings to am speaking to mr xyz if you day yes you are my xyz next question is to confirm your name, address etc if it matches what's on your cv.

Either the HR person that called is not trained HR assistant or your story is not true.

You clearly know nothing about HR. No HR personnel tells an unidentified applicant his mission. He/she would strive to know who is on the phone before stating his/her mission.

When you take a call, you are supposed to at least, say hello, then the caller will introduce his/herself first, then ask if you are so so and so, before giving out his/her mission.

This is done to ensure that no personal information is released to a wrong person

The HR person is at fault I am in HR and because of these kinds of reactions, I usually start my calls by introducing myself first so the other person knows who is calling and is at ease. He could have simply said "I am John D calling from bank. That wouldnt hurt. That said, the lady should have been cautious as a job seeker that was just interviewed and expecting phone calls. Lets call a spade a spade please.
Best response so. Nigerian HR's cannot, I repeat, cannot pass for telephone responders out of Nigeria. By the way, HR's are not HIRING MANAGERS, hence do not have capacity to disapprove of job offer signed by executive management. My conclusion, this is mere FICTION.
