This is one of the most pleasant threads on NL. No insults, no yabs, no derogatory words just advice and good words. Really nice and unusual.

Op, if you can read this, you messed up big time. Only a fresh and myopic job seeking youth will not see the opportunities available in teaching environment. Apology tendered if this sounds insultive.

See, if I be you, I will take up the job because of the following additional opportunities that abound in teaching environment:

1. Extra-Moral lessons in the school can fetch you more income

2. If you're good in what you teach to the extent of being noticed by the School, the school, for the fear of losing you, may bargain for your salary increase.

3. In addition to (2) above, parents can hire you for the wards' private home lesson where your lesson fee will be determined by you.

4. In furtherance of (3) above, you night be lucky to meet parents that will not only like you but pick interest in lending you a helping hand in fulfilling your career outside the teaching job by getting you your dream job. I have friends who have good testimonies to share in this vein.

By ad large, teaching is basically for those who has the passion to impact knowledge and not for those who see it as a way of survival.

I had similar experience some months ago.

I was called to show up for an interview. I dressed up in one of my finest shirt and pants and matched it up with a correct leather shoe (UK standard).

I got to the venue, scanned through the environment and was wowed with the landmass and structures.

The interview began with an oral test which I aced, then a micro teaching session which I aced too (the feedbacks from the students were satisfactory) and a written test too.

The time for negotiations came and I was asked to name an asking price. I said some beautiful things to lay the foundation (as a creative writer na) and proceeded further to demand for 40k (negotiable).

The principal responded with a smile and said he doesn't even earn that much (I quaked! Little wonder I noticed none of them expressed any iota of Joy).

He said I do not have a formal teaching experience (upon say I indicate say I be public speaker and a leader figure o).

So, he said I'll be paid 20k and that I will be taking chemistry, biology, and basic science.

I glanced through their timetable and I knew instantly that it's a suicide mission. Hence, I aborted the mission instantly.

Feeding and transport (subsidized) will cost me around 12k per month.

I reject nonsense. I just concluded that "sometimes it is better to be static than to run in a circle/cycle"

That's not a good deal.
I was a teacher for roughly ¹²yrs of my teenage years.
I earned 15k teaching a lone subject ( Computer Sci).
I had a private office which also houses the computer lab fully equipped with AC.
This was 8years ago .

So I can't imagine teaching 3 subjects at 30k in this current administration.

A private school called me for an interview last week Monday. As a job hunter I'm always prepared for any interviews. So when I got there, It's was a 3 segments interview (written test, oral and micro teaching)

As a Bsc graduate in Accounting Education, I was given financial accounting, English language and current affairs for the written test interview. The account and English was WAEC standard questions. After the written test interview, the principal said he will call me for further interviews if i pass the test.

On Thursday morning, I received a call from the school inviting me for further interviews which is oral and micro teaching. When I got there, the principal was asking me loads of questions like why should I hire you? How many years experience do you have? How do you discipline a child? how can you make this school grow? Can we trust you with our female students? bla bla bla... After that we went to the classroom for the final segment which was micro teaching.

After everything, he employed me and we started discussing about the subject I will teach and the salary. The principal said I will be teaching Accounting, Economics and Marketing (ss1 - ss3), I said no problem.

What really got me angry was about the salary, he said he's willing to pay me 30k without negotiation.

As if that wasn't enough, he later said he can also call me anytime to teach any subject if the particular subject teacher isn't around. I was just laughing in my mind.

The principal was expecting me to resume today, he has been calling me since morning, I haven't picked his calls. I'm not a slave.

Mind you, this is a standard private school and my "least" expectation was 45k, Assuming he was willing to pay 45k, I would have resumed today.

Why are private schools so wicked? Is teaching job now a modern day slavery? I'm tired of this country.
Too bad

Honestly brother, I'm also angry here too.

Assuming he even said 40-45k, seriously I would have resumed. That 30k peanut is just too small.

Difference of 10k and you are ranting, why not ask for it. Though, he said no negotiation but you could have still negotiated on phone. Tell him or her, you went home and calculated again, that 30k wouldnt worth it in this harsh economy that 50k will do. Na una follow dey spoil this country. Simple thing you could have asked for and move on.

From my experience, when going to all these private schools for Job interview, always ask of the salary before they start their so called "Chain Of Interviews"...Written, Oral and Micro Teaching. Take it from someone who used to be a Teacher.

You are even lucky, wait till you have the principal that will tell you he only pays per period. And his so called pay-per-period is N300 per period. And there are 18 teaching periods per week (standard).

Stinginess is a curse.

Go online and look for remote opportunities. You'll definitely make more than that for even a basic part-time clerical job. Once you get enough experience, you can get an American salary.

So you ghosted an employer the way some usually do to candidates. grin

Not all private schools operate that way, if you reside in Lagos and you really want to teach, go for the big private schools like Atlantic Hall, American International School, Olashore International School etc.

Don't think it is impossible to get into such schools without connection. Sometimes an unsolicited application will land you the job, but your cover letter and CV need to be really tight. A lady I know landed a job in one of such schools through an unsolicited application.

How much are they paying
