@ Davidylan,

What kind of advice is that? Is that how to talk to people? There are many people with 3rd class that are more intelligent than u, bunkum!

@ Poster
It's ok, just try and do a PGDE or get a professional exam, meanwhile work on urself, develop yourself. Look out for an opportunity to prove yourself. I  bet u, u'll kiss the sky. It is well.

Hi,
People with third class still have a lot to contribute to our society. I understand that the almighty legal luminary-Chief Gani Fewehinmi SAN, graduated with 3rd class, today his books are being used by every lawyer and law students who want to be successful.
The taste of the pudding is actually in the eating. So, be of good cheers, the best is yet to come! cool

@iykrion,
solid word.i agree absolutely.

@poster
success is never as result of academic qualifications alone.

some first class grads are even failures.

so do not lose hope.

have u got any innate talents?

then develop it.

these days pple make more cash from selling their talents dn they do using wat they learnt in school.

also ,if u have d means,take a professional course and be the guru at it.

companies would rush to u .

just finished reading an advert on this site where a company was looking for somebody who is good at the forex market to conduct a training.

u need not be a grad to be a master at dt.

there are so many opportunities in the IT industry.avail yourself of them.

lastly,as long as God lives there is always hope.never lose hope.

that would be an insult to God.u can be whatever u want to be.

there is a drop of greatness in everyone of us(remember d guiness advert)

Cheers

Since when did it become a sin to tell people to work harder? grin Sure there are people with 3rd class who are more intelligent than me, i have an uncle to prove it! But wait, the fellow didnt sit on a forum despondently asking if there was any hope for 3rd class holders; he worked VERY VERY hard to put himself through a tasking MBA program and today he is reaping the fruits of his labor.

Work hard!!

poeticsoul:

Stuff and nonsense!!! cheesy I am insensitive for telling you to work hard? And for that reason i shld be booted out of the forum? Sorry dear, i know many like you who partied and played all their college lives only to start moaning everywhere after getting a 3rd class and expecting everyone else to be sympathetic to their laziness-induced plight!

charming4:

lol i am where i am by the grace of God. I dont need a hypocrite to remind me. The funny thing is God's grace does not work for the lazy and unserious. You need to put in an effort before His grace can CROWN your efforts with success.

Nobody just walked to the heights they attain today simply by sleeping and waiting for God!

u need to understand that not every graduate with a 3rd class got it out of laziness, a lot of things happen, even the first classers have some imposters amongst them, besides if u know what the essence of nairaland is,you would not be talking like that, its supposed to be a forum man, wake up, a place where ppl come to air their views and ideas and get positive, intelligent and informed answers, well thats hopin u fell into that category, i av little else to say to you.

@poster
develop and package yourself, work on your strong points, forget about the past as it is actually the past. get certifications, go for seminars and programs, get a masters in your major, and stay informed, u av done well, a problem shared is a problem half solved, God is your strength

there are so many big shots out there with 3rd class who employ the 1st class and 2.1s in the society and refuse to emply ppl with their grade type, so obviously its not all about d class of degree u graduate with, that is to say the least, its all about taking opportunities, being informed and the Grace of God.

It is already well established that some 3rd class holders where simply unfortunate however the vast majority have only themselves to blame.

Passworded:

even the first classers have some imposters amongst them,

We know that already, its the Nigerian system. That some so-called first class degree holders did not obtain their degree legitimately is not an excuse for others to take hard work for granted.

lol you must have been in a deep sleep when you typed this. So you know that the essence of a forum is to air views and you are hyperventilating because i choose to express my own ideas which just seem to be opposing to urs?
What do you classify as "intelligent and informed answers"? Just about anything that agrees with your mindset?

dazzj4:

David, you are realy behaving like a kid,anyway i think that is what you are. A matured person will never say such ! Wish you the best though.

What would have been the "matured" response to the thread author's question? So it is childish to admonish others to work hard if they desire success?

To be honest with you guys i am awfully disappointed with the level of thinking of the average Nigerian. I am no longer surprised that we as a nation are not progressing, we have become too comfortable with mediocrity, we condone laziness by hiding under the banner of the "Nigerian factor".

I am bambozzled that in a competitive world, we still have people who blow a gasket for simply being told to work hard?
If 3rd class holders expect to get jobs (i.e. rewarded for laziness) then what is the incentive for the coming generation to aspire to the top? I see blind people keep holding desperately to the "Gani Fawehinmi had a 3rd class" excuse and i just fear for the future of our country.

The man has a point,

Sometimes us naijas can be a bit too patronizing of ourselves blaming all of our troubles on the government, economy etc .

Yes, some of you are right having a 3rd class is not the end of the world, however in the present climate the 3rd classer is going to have a tough time finding anything and that not only applies to Naija, it is a universal thing. We live in a very very competitive world and eventhough we can cite some examples of some 3rd classers or drop outs being at the top (I believe Branson and Bill Gates are in this category as well) they still had to work extremely hard to get where they are today!

My opinion is that a university degree opens your mind to possibilities, it is just a pity that our education system is not as good as the western world because it is more than just sitting in a class and listen to some old foggie yab on about God knows what all day long, there is a lot of hands on learning and other methods as well.

3rd classer, now is the time to really roll up your sleeves and find out who you are and why you are here. Take some time out to discover you - would you consider yourself to be the academic type or are you more the 'trade' type? is there anything you are really good at ie creative, artistic, organising, good with numbers, teaching ie something that comes naturally to you. Once you find this out, then start to look for opportunites to develop this God given ability or talent through something like an apprenticeship - it does not have to be everyday. Or maybe if you believe you can still give the academics a go, by all means try again, but you are going to have to really knuckle down this time!!!

No they are not drop-outs. We like to call Bill Gates a "drop-out" simply because it gives us an excuse to explain away our useriousness.
Bill LEFT school voluntarily to pursue an idea that grew to become the Microsoft we all know today. He did not fail out, did not leave out of frustration, was not dismissed nor expelled.

Another favorite "drop-out" are the Google founders. They simply left Harvard where they were pursuing a PHD degree to work on a project that has morphed into google that we know today.

There is no excuse for failure anywhere. Even Gani is no longer a tenable excuse.

I got a third, and I have a perfectly good reason for it.

I detested the strictures of the university especially when it came to formulating an argument
or presenting a paper.

Because of the lecturesrs mental laziness, they demand that your argument follows a logical pattern
i.e A-B.

But I like to defy logic. I prefer to start from n-z then finally to a.

It is more creative, less boring, and quite cryptic.

But the Pataks couldn't be bothered .
They would rather fail me. angry cry

Logical reasoning is not something the average Nigerian learns. Our educational system is one that actively encourages mumuism, i.e. just cram and pour your ancient textbooks.

It is very unfortunate for you to refer to those who cited the Gani issue as a case study, to encourage some one who is in dire need of it as 'blind Nigerians'.
Well, I leave you to your conscience. For those who believe that Gani was able make success as a result of dearth of lawyers must have a rethink, because examination is meant to test one's level of preparedness. One cannot tell the state of the poster's mind when he wrote his degree exam. ARROGANCE IS A PRODUCT OF STUPIDITY.
Finally, some things are better left unsaid, because there is a lot of wisdom in silence.

@david

Rather it is unfortunate that some people would rather cling to Gani's alleged 3rd class degree as a spurious excuse for their own failure. Gani is one out of thousands who made a 3rd class degree, pray where are the rest?

iykrion:

Well, I leave you to your conscience. For those who believe that Gani was able make success as a result of dearth of lawyers must have a rethink, because examination is meant to test one's level of preparedness. One cannot tell the state of the poster's mind when he wrote his degree exam.

This is a very silly surmise borne out of a lazy attitude that is ever ready to defend mediocrity. Gani made a third class in the days when virtually almost every graduate was guaranteed a decent job well before they finished their degree exams. Infact several of our senior civil servants today did not need a university degree to get good jobs. Is this the same today?

Agreed that exams are not a true test of intelligence but the poster had multiple chances to rectify his errors with several exams! Did the poster have issues with his state of mind for the 5yrs he was in school?

iykrion:

ARROGANCE IS A PRODUCT OF STUPIDITY.

This is a farce and is sadly a reminder that we now live in a generation that thrives on meaningless "catchy phrases". Arrogant people are not necesarily stupid, infact many of them are much smarter than you think.

iykrion:

Finally, some things are better left unsaid, because there is a lot of wisdom in silence.

You're right because there was very little wisdom in your above misplaced diatribe
Re: Any Hope 4 3rd Classers by iykrion(m): 10:11pm On Sep 22, 2007
@David,
I hope stupidity still stands for "slow in learning" I wonder why you categorise my response as fulmination or better still in your on words diatribe. Let me state here for the purpose of records, that my qoute 'ARROGANCE IS A PRODUCT OF STUPIDITY' was actually meant to drive home my point why we should encourage the poster not to relent in his quest for a brighter future.
Well, David, only you know how you understood my response, because from your latest response, you are really angry. Let me equally, state here that my words were never meant to denigrate anyone. I equally believe that you have a right to say whatever you can defend. I still think it is really unfortunate refering to people with geniune intentions as 'blind Nigerians'. David, I once again, leave you to your conscience.
Cheers cool

Is "work harder next time" any different from encouraging the poster not to relent in his quest for a better future rather than bemoaning a self-inflicted fate?

I laugh when you talk about leaving me to my conscience, that sentence makes no sense at all. Ah well maybe you've got another catchy phrase up your sleeves.
