As an educationist, I am seriously displeased with the way students are admitted into uni.
Education is suppose to prepare u for the world of work in ur chosen field of study but in Nigeria this is not the case.
The nigerian edu system is wasting lives instead of building one.
There is a certain feeling of fulfilment wen u practise wat u studied after uni.

Hi, I want to advise you because I am a into Oil and Gas and I own a few trucks. By the way, I was a banker too who quit banking and went into business, hustling from the scratch, hiring trucks from others to deliver products until I started buying my own trucks one after the other.

Bros

Thank God for the day He gave you this wisdom. Thank Him once again. Contrary to what people said that you should do it for a while bla bla....dont do it for a while. Keep your chemistry certificate far far away and concentrate on this. I can confirm to you that Nigeria has lots of mechanics but lack truck mechanics that are really really good. Most are illiterates who are unreliable and unstable. I will advise you to pick specific areas of truck engines and specialise on it. Maybe Injectors and Turbos, then ask around for truck brands that have few mechanics. Then learn about recent trucks. from 2005 model upward

You can also learn about electricals of trucks, then get diagnostic machines with time. These are things we lack. i can authoritatively tell you that I have had to call mechanic all the way from kaduna to go to Warri road to fix my truck, from Suleja to Port harcourt and some other crazy distances because we couldnt find reliable people. I can also tell you that I have a friend in Abuja who went into diesel engine repairs as a graduate. Because he is a graduate, he does his things differently. You will always see him browsing, learning new techniques online, embracing new engines that all those old and illiterate mechanics run away from, because theyre "complicated". This my friend, a "bloody mechanic" has houses inside Abuja and he drives the choicest of cars. He is richer than most of his clients, and he is a young guy. In his thirties

I can give you more instances. dont hesitate bro. go for it.

It really isnt a bad idea to think outside the box but have you considered the time required to graduate from this type of apprenticeship? I know mechanics train for many years before their freedom. I suggest you consider other hand works you can learn in a relatively short period of time e. g Tailoring, making shoes, e. T. C which u can pick up in one year. With commitment and a creative eye, u will surely blow cos your crafts alone will advertise themselves.

Depends on the person teaching him, you don't need to spend up to 2years or even 1year before you can know how to repair this things.

It's just Nigeria thing where oga will tell you to sign for 2years or so just because most of this oga's don't teach theory most of them do trial and error and when they get the cause, then if such fault arise they head straight to that place to repair.

It shouldn't be so, take for instance, as a laptop chip level engineer, some engineer believe when this problem arises then this is the problem, they head straight to the place to fix it and some times it might not be the problem. You need to trace from birth place, with a schematic diagram to help you trace fault well.

I see a lot of nigerian oga's them do trial and error especially in engineering stuff.

My advice to op is, he should learn from someone that have more customers, the more customers you have the more problem you solve and the more you learn.

And try to upgrade yourself, don't always depend on your boss for information.
You don't need to spend 2years to know this stuff.

Do it o. Don't even think twice. Try and specialise yourself in a part e.g brakes, engine or a particular model of truck etc. Then constantly upgrade yourself, the difference with you and the other mechanics will be your education. Package your skills, don't settle, be trust worthy and be good at your job. I know a big boy mechanic in Animashaun, Surulere. He deals only Mercedes Benz. Yiu have to see how sometimes he has to turn jobs down. Since he started he has travelled to Germany for more training. He is not just a mechanic he is a specialist. Baba don't dull yourself o. Forget office work nothing they there aside the suit n plenty English. You are well on the part to be your own boss in 10 years or less depending on how far you are willing to go for further training.
I wish they taught us all these in school I would have learnt a skill during holidays. But it's never too late as well. Good luck and I hope you take this part less travelled and you will see there are always different roads to riches.

[quote author=ewa20buredi100 post=66716263]Hi,
I need your advice or counsel on this issue that has been giving me sleepless night.
I am sharing this on nairaland because i feel there are men and women of mature minds and who have lots of experiences on here from diverse walks of life who can be of help.

I have been unemployed for almost 10months now, though before now i worked as a Chemistry teacher for some years until tragedy struck early last year(lost a very vital person in my life). I had to quit the teaching job (because the incident happened at the time where the senior students were preparing for their WASSCE) and as the first born i had funeral rites to perform.
After the burial things weren't too pleasant with me, so i had to re-locate from Lagos to Benin (to stay with an Uncle). My plan was that after everything i would go for any professional course or do one of these HSE courses to boost my chances of getting a job, but due to re-location and financial constraint i had to think of something else.

It happens that where i am currently staying in Benin; along Benin-Agbor road, close to NNPC depot before Benin-Agbor by-pass; has this influx of trailers and heavy duty trucks transporting goods and PMS/diesel/coaltar to and from other states.
Hence the availability of lots of truck's spare-parts markets in the area as well truck mechanics with shops everywhere dealing in repairs of different types of truck (Scania, MACK, M.A.N diesel, etc).

Being that i have been idle for a while now, a thought just came to me that instead of staying idle why not apply to be a Diesel Injector engine mechanic apprentice.

Please do both. You will not regret it.

Experience is the best teacher. My friend I was in your shoe just 2years ago after my nysc no job after a year what next to do I can't waste another year without any positive result to cut the long story short I ended up in nbuka (local name for motor spare part market) somewhere around ladipo via ojekunle if you know Lagos very well now as a graduate of environmental biology I can tell you a lot about diesel engine and other motor spare part of the model Volkswagen it's a plus for me an I'm happy but if you can withstand the challenges of what people will say or their reaction to it you will be successful even your own boss or master will criticise you it's normal cause you are new an he really wants you to learn. Go ahead and make the choice you won't regret it forget about money money money learn the skills it will bring you money. All the best my friend

absolutely agree with this. However, the reality is its very unlikely to see a mechanic that trained for less than 2 years. Many will even say 2 years is too short to learn the skills. Many will tell the aspiring apprentice its 2 years but will eventually extend it for longer claiming he has not leant enough just to exploit him. There are good masters but they are very few when compared with the majority.

It's times like this that makes me proud. If we could encourage ourselves like this, Nigeria would have been far better and life more meaningful. My future children will not make the same mistake my parents and I made. Not all graduates are made for office and posh suits.

Being a mechanic isn’t bad. Howver, I feel you might want to rethink your options.

Mechanical apprentice will take about 4 years to graduate, if less then 3 years.

28+3 = 31 years of age

At 31, what do you intend to do with the skills ? Don’t tell me you want to remain at the garage and be waiting for broken trucks. Do you have a plan to think big ? A strategy to own your workshop

At 31, you don’t have a lot of time if you know what I mean.

Alternatively, you can learn how to cut hair and try getting loan from family and friend. Start a barber shop, get more loan and keep expanding. Don’t relent and continue applying for jobs in chemistry or start an MSc, you are a star and stars don’t give up. When you get a job you can still maintain your barber shop with your own employees.

One of my greatest mentors holds degrees in Law, Medicine, and Engineering. He did stop practising law, then medicine and now just runs an engineering firm.

He makes a great living as a forensic expert in court cases on subjects that encompasses those fields.

I say this to encourage you to not think that your degree in Chemical is the end of the road.

Who knows, maybe the automobile field is waiting for you to make a fruitful connection between chemical engineering and automotive engineering as you discover something benefitial.

Industrial Chemistry
For you to have read industrial chemistry and looking for job is a shame. This is a handy course for chemical innovations. Must you earn a salary. Look at the Chemical business Industry, look at products that can be made from safe chemicals. That's an handwork.

Science and Engineering graduates shouldn't be looking for jobs up and down. If you can't get one, create one

Becoming a mechanic apprentice doesn't mean you dumping ur BSc, a time will come when you might be needing it but before then, man must survive. No knowledge is ever a waste no matter how small. Nothing beats getting a practical entrepreneurship skill in the present era we find ourselves today. I am a diesel injector Mechanic and speaking experience, you won't regret it. No bragging or exaggeration bro, I have my B. eng cert but have turned down over 10 job opportunities within this year alone because the shop is Bae when compared with what is being offered out there.
You a graduate, so learning the mechanical skills ll be easier and faster. Go for it

Young man...if I had the knowledge I had today trust me I would have learnt a hand work or gone to a more technical school and leave all this BSc issue. I advice you take up the opportunity and learn the hand work it doesn't stop you from being who you are, you can actually be applying for jobs while learning the mechanic, which ever comes first, if u finish and no work well you have a hand work and can stand onenyour own. If a very good job comes and its good enuf to go for then you go. But start doing something. Also being a graduate I believe you would be able to apply your self better and package better than your master, trust me these mechanic guys are quite rich. As long as you don't begin to cheat people and drink and womanise because that's what finishes thier money. Go ahead man, don't ever be scared of failure. NOTHING BEATS HAVING A SKILL OR HAND WORK.

I fail to see how your Bsc certificate requires being dumped before you learn another skill. Are you sure that you are truly a graduate? What stops you from learning a skill while still sending CVs to apply for jobs bro? Look at the time frame it takes to learn a skill, chose one that doesn't exceed a year to graduate, apply yourself to it and the sky will be your limit

I want to know if that thought is worth giving a try and what are the things that may likely happen being that i did not read an engineering course from the University and what may become of my life. I am 28years of age.

Please help a brother by pushing it to front page mod.

Re: Should I Dump My Bsc Degree To Be A Mechanic Apprentice? by samsono30: 8:52am On Apr 15, 2018
Am a graduate, finish school in 2007, but while in school o learnt about this mechanical work of fixing injection pumps for big lorries and diesel cars and trucks, after school I worked in an insurance company for a year, then got this publishing job where I worked for 3 years an left, before I left how much was I paid as a graduate? 30k. I left and stayed for an other 3 years with no job but kept myself busy writing my own book waiting to publish them soon. one day I thought of my hand work and I decided to have my work shop. Could you believe within 2 weeks I make more than 150k even more than a graduate get in a month and am still I can publish at anytime am ready. All am saying is that you will never regret it, In future you can package your workshop well not like road side mechanic where everything you do is in door with AC fitted. My brother everything is all about packaging.
