princdebola201: You keep parroting this false statement. At this point I will just leave you to your beliefs. How can the houses be redundant when they are fully occupied? In fact more houses need to be built. There is shortage of housing everywhere in the East and in Nigeria overall. 1 Like |

Believe Nigerian statistics at your peril! I don't understand the younger yoruba generation. Nigeria cannot count even the number of people in Nigeria nor even count the number of votes in a ward election. Yet, you think it's the complex algorithm and calculation of poverty index that they can do? Keep deluding yourself 4 Likes |

cjrane: Honestly, NBS just showed how far they are willing to go just to prove a point. Nothing in that statistics add up to reality. The only problem is that when foreign investors are looking at where to invest and get a good return, they will just ignore the south east and go to the west and south south. I know their game plan. 3 Likes |

princdebola201: Have you ever wondered how the renters are able to afford their rents if no economic activities gong on? Do you think people living in these houses are living for free/? Do you think more houses will be built for residence if there was no profit to be made? Honestly, you are not making sense. 5 Likes |

Regardless of the statistics, there is artificially created hunger in the land that are turning young men into begers. Good arable land are now sold to big business which is not bad really but once sold to foreign business we are in trouble. The original owners are turned to daily laborers and their children leave for big cities. What do they do with the money? Use it to buy plastics that only last for 3 years and imported food that last for a couple of days. The farmland that sustained families for years and many more years in advance are turned into fine unoccupied buildings that cannot command the same amount of rent as in the cities. The reason people stay in cities like Lagos is to make money, not to develop. Once they go back home, their source of income dries up. If you do not stay in your villages, who is going to stay there and rent your beautiful buildings? Farming remains money maker at the villages. Stop fooling yourselves, Nigerians pay little taxes and do not generate enough Internal Generated Revenue. 1 Like |

horsepower102: As a person who has seen the completion of about 8 buildings in the last 1 year in the south east, An average of N7,000,000.00 was spent on labor and workmanship costs for these buildings. The whole of the money went to poor artisans in a manner of N3000 average daily for about 200 or more workers who work in each of the houses. This is the best poverty alleviation technique in the world. Work and get rich. There are plazas going up in Onitsha, there are malls and flyover projects in Ebonyi and Abia, there are roads in many states here, men do these jobs, it has a ripple effect on the economy of the region and people are not as poor as they were to be if not for all these ongoing jobs. Shops will sell more, transportation of goods and services has been lubricating the south east economy. Construction is the biggest factory in the world. 6 Likes |

horsepower102: Bros, Forget about meaningful foreign investment coming to Nigeria. Nigeria is going down the drain and foreigners are looking for ways to divest from Nigeria and move to prosperous safe places such as Ghana, Kenya or South Africa. The only people who have not really caught up with the reality of what is happening in Nigeria are still some recalcitrant Igbo businessmen who are risking their entire wealth and still massively investing in the Southwest or North. But when alarm finally blows, they will pay for their folly. So, na dem sabi! 6 Likes |

nijabazaar: There's no way a property boom cannot benefit poor people in the cities it is happening. The people who look for, and connect the property deals as land agents are mostly poor people. The people who put on the physical labour to construct these houses are poor artisans who take home good pay for doing those manual jobs. The people who sell the goods they use in building the houses are mostly poor traders selling wood, local sand, local gravel, etc. The people who drive the trucks, loading and offloading many building materials are poor people who earns their living from those activities. The shops they sell all these building materials, restaurants and fast food joints to serve hungry workers and drivers are rented from locals. The lawyers and estate agents who rent all these properties take home some money. If you say lands in Awka are very expensive, well, if I am the agent that connected the deal, I will be smiling to the bank with my 10% which will be over a million. That's the type of things that happen when theres a property boom. The whole economy is being lubricated effortlessly and the multiplier effect is what will make for a rapidly increasing middle class. 9 Likes |

I have said severely that the NBS stats is fraudulent. How can NBS stats differ so much from that of the World Bank and the UNDP who Dr. Yemi Kale said get their facts from NBS? How can you release stats that are so out of line with every day observation? Enugu has about 60% poverty rate then Kogi that I am quite familiar with is 25%? Lagos is 4%? Nothing we no go see 6 Likes |

horsepower102: Erecting building is not a significant contributing index factor for poverty rating. There is no village or region in Nigeria today that is not erecting building or other structure. It is only noticeable in the east because of tiny land mass. People prefer to build storey buildings in the east because of scarcity or cost of land. Land is expensive because of scarcity and small land mass. Imagine total land mass of entire 5-states in the south east is just slightly above Oyo state. How won't you notice development in such tiny land? Please, stop chest beating, accept reality, you will never see elders and wise people in biafra land arguing this out. When you over rate yourself and reality later hit on you in term of statistics from NBS, world bank and Oxford University, you begin to shout "afonja" up and down. Humble yourself, accept realities on ground and you will be good for it. Is only God that lifts up and cast down. Humility is important, we will not all be cast down! 7 Likes 2 Shares |
