SSpeter: Soludo was more than a banker, he was a Consultant to both the world bank and the IMF. Please LET US AVOID unnecessary argument. When did being a consultant to WB and IMF equate to being a banker? So an accountant that consults for a stock broking firm is now a stockbroker? Una no go kill person for this Nairaland. Next moment you will start arguing semantics. SOLUDO WAS NEVER A BANKER. You can take your argument and logic to a palm wine bar. |

BreconHills: The stock market fell for several reasons
1. There was too much money in the market fuelled by easy margin loans. Pure speculation resulted- It got to a stage Evans Pharmaceuticals was doubling every x days without any improvement in its fundamentals. 2. As with any bubble...rumour overtook legitimate market news. Who can forget Oceanics phantom financials that led to frenzied buying of its shares. Pure lies. 3. Poor regulation. The NSE was simply chasing records on a booming All share Index. Financial reporting was lax and listed companies did what they liked 4. When Dubai and the US subprime mortgage market was tanking, funds began exiting Nigeria for real estate overseas. I can say that Nigeria almost single handedly saved those markets from collapse. I still remember those girls being prostitutes to sell Dubai properties even in Malls. 5. Foreign portfolio investors did a "concert party" on the Nigerian Market suckering players by pushing up prices and exiting in well timed exits. MMM style.
What a time that was - suicides, home foreclosures, tears and anguish. I saw shege from one bank like this on margin loan. Those guys expoited ignorance of margin loan fine print ehn! Sold themselves houses like gala.
A time and a half. Kudos to anyone who survived it. 👏 KUDOS! I will start watching out for you from now on concerning stock market threads. |

This article is to say the least alarmist.
What was the share price of FB Holdings before the fighr started? What is the realistic value price of FBN Holdings shares?
Was it not their roforofo fight that shot up the price in the first instance?
The loss being talked about is therefore subjective. |

It is thru the market and no where else that you can acquire the shares. That was why Tony Elumelu sweated like she goat the last time this same Otedola acquired the shares of Transcorp on the floor with a view to toppling him. |

relagze: This is a sucker punch by the CBN. Lets see how the currency respond. There is no sucker punch here. The big banks have already declared their dividends and did not factor in the astronomical profit as a result of the FX gain. If this had come before they did then, shareholders that are "hungry" for too much dividend would have felt let down. Not paying dividend from the FX is "elementary, common=sensesical" accounting. Meanwhile, the "response" of the currency has nothing to do about this. |

If the FCDA cannot provide a functional microphone during an event then, one will wonder how they have been running the affairs of that office You are absolutely correct. Ciivel servants are used to the laxity. Just shake them.a little and they start calling the fellow names. Ordinary microphone that will work seamlessly for a church pastor cannot work for minister. Good policy from the CBN but the fact remains that the banks are not even thinking of utilising the FX gains to pay dividends.
Most of the banks that have so far declared HY dividends have the intention of paying what they paid same time last year.
Zenith and GT paid..50k as half year dividends and are paying the same this year. So also is Fidelity Bank. If they were to pay from the FX gains, the first two banks I mentioned will pay nothing less than N2 per share.
Good thinking by the apex bank because I as a shareholder will not want such to happen.
To the idiot that argued with me concerning shares the last time, I am looking forward to your comments.

Zxcvbnmghtr: I travel very frequently to these countries. So, I know very well. Infact, if my siblings living in Canada had not purchased their current home few years ago which they are meant to pay for a term of 20 years it would have been very difficult for them presently because the interest rate has been increased.
Our dad too was privilege to tour many countries due to his kind of job. In his own days though, Naira was stronger but his story is that, life is better today than it was then because despite the strong value of the Naira it was very challenging to get and to see people buying cars, building houses unlike today. He said, if you get to buy a bicycle then, you will be celebrated. Unfortunately, may that will argue with you are young, un-exposed and extremely ignorant who have not even been to one third of the states in Nigeria talk less of being to any of the International airports for that matter. |
