GDP is nothing really, Nigeria has GDP of 450b SA has of 360b

Yet Nigeria national budget is $29b and SA is $130b

Even talking of wealth south africahas wealthiest people in africa with $700b in its population, while nigeria is $250b and egypt at $370b

When you cook the books, you end up with these inbalances. Like many african countries do on the continent, the stats are always cooked. Some times the stats are not there to look good on the international eyes, but are there to focus and channel development in the areas where development is mostly needed. But in Africa, stats are there to paint the country better whereas things are falling apart and people are dying of hunger.

What truth? grin
I want to learn from you so I don't understand your anger here.

I would appreciate it if you told about South Africa's companies that are founded and owned by blacks. And not BEE or PIC stuff.
Because like you said, the best way to learn about a country is through its people.

For Nigeria, I can give you Globacom, Innoson Vehicles, Gtbank, Access Bank( Africa's largest bank), Helios and more.

When they say SA economy is sofisticated. Maybe you dont understand what they mean. SA economy is very different from nigeria economy. SA economy is not dominated by individuals like you have the dangote and the likes. South african economy is run by pension money. I told you SA has $500bn pension fund assets, compare to nigeria's only $26bn pension money. That money is not owned by individual. Its owned by the people, the workers. I for one, my pension money has been invested in many big malls in SA and those funds are managed by Alexander forbes pension fund.

PIC manages 1.3m government employees pension fund, i realised you had no clue what you were talking about. The shares they owned are not considered BEE shares. They owned controlling shares at Telkom, MTN, Shoprite, Exxaro, Edcon, Standard Bank, Capitec. Their shares on Naspers are worth $16bn. Remember there are many pension fund management companies, its not only PIC, Alexander forbes, Eskom pension fund, Transnet, there is many. SA has more than 2000 malls, and majority of those malls are owned by workers through their pension funds. This is the reason you will never find a dangote in SA. All those billionares from SA, all of them dont own more than 50% in companies they are involved in, many of them have small shares in different companies.

Remember, when we say PIC manages 1.3m government workers pension money, we are not including the parastetal company workers.

SA government owns 700 different companies, e.g Eskom, Transnet, Denel, Armscor, NECSA, SANRAL, PRASA, CSIR, SABC, SAA, all these companies manage their own pension fund or have private companies who manage it for them. So you see SA economy is like an Engine. Dangote owns everything in Nigeria and you are proud of that, if nigerians owned 70% of dangote's wealth, nigeria would be far, that would mean more middle class for nigerians.

What do you want me to know? You started it all by saying Nigerians don't own companies in other countries except drug and kidnapping rings. And I told you the South African companies we know are all white- founded. At least Nigeria has big companies founded by Nigerians. One of those companies is an employer of labor in south Africa. PIC is like BEE, a way to help blacks own parts of white founded South African companies.
The only thing I want you to teach me now is major South African companies founded by blacks and not PIC investing in MTn, Shoprite, etc.

Check the Bolded, and tell me what do you interpret that? Just wanna see if you are an honest person or you are here to drive an Agenda, as i have seen it before on this platform.

That statement says, you concede defeat against white south africans, but you wanna paint a picture of Nigeria being better than black south africa. And you try to exclude white south africans as not south africans. White south africans have been in SA yrs before America was formed, almost 400yrs. If you can call white australian, australian, who has only been in austrilia for 120yrs and you cptry to exclude white south africans who have been in SA for 400yrs as None south africans, then you need serious help.

Pic is over 90% black,

And it has $200bn worth of assets. Owns majority shares of mtn. Owns 16% of Naspers. Owns 9% of sasol. Owns shares at Shoprite as well. The list is endless.

South africa pension fund is worth $500bn, $200bn of that belongs to PIC.

This giant of Africa ant called Nigeria is one big lie. How come biggest economy in Africa is such a mess?
GDP USD: 448.12 bn
BUDGET USD: 29 bn
Population: 200 mill
SA:

GDP: 351.34 bn
BUDGET: 130 bn
Population: 55+ mill

Nigeria is an informal/ rural economy.

They have multiple currency exchanges, so the one they use to convert their GDP to dollar, is lower compare to the others like black market exchange etc. In reality, nigerian economy is not bigger than SA. Hence their revanue collection is 4 times less than South africa. It shows the economy is not what it is on paper.

Yet another Naira devaluation of 5.5% - year to date - 21% - the overcooked GDP will end less than 300B dollars.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-07-04/nigerian-central-bank-devalues-naira-by-5-3-at-currency-auction

Thats the results of pegging a currency. Let markets determine your currency rather than manipulating it. Why do you think $1=¥103 and japan still one of the richest country. If you try to manipulate your currency you will end up with multiple exchange rates in the black market, and that is due to struggling fo support your pegged currency. Nigeria looses $5bn a year just to support the pegged currency, that money could be used to develop infrastructure.

Look at Zim, same story. You will run out of money while trying to peg the currency.

Investors need to get their money out. It’s a business. They invest in foreign currency and need foreign currency out in terms of dividend, royalties and share of profit. Imagine investing $100,000 in Nigeria 4 years ago and that same money is now worth $70,000, it’s a huge loss.

And even that $70k you cant take it out. Its a nightmare. Companies cant survive, you cant even import materials.

Femiolunloyo:

You are right. They will most likely be stricter with those who don't have real or convincing reasons to go to South Africa. Applicants with good reasons must be conversant with the rules of the game. I understand this might not be practical always but bank account statements usually determines a lot too.

I also perfectly understand your views Geenosko and they are very much valid too.
But let us look at two issues you have highlighted above:
1. visa application processing time
2. xenophobia

When it comes to the visa application, South Africa regards Nigeria as a high volume visa demanding country. This is due to the fact that South Africa receives on average, about 450 visa applications EVERY DAY across the three VFS centers for SA in Naija!! Truth be told, they are overwhelmed with visa applications and of course, under-staffed too. As Nigerians applying for visas to South Africa, we can safely say the visa application volume is responsible for the delays we experience.

As per xenophobia, it is a complex beast that is difficult to define in South Africa because there are several factors responsible for these attacks on African migrants. It will be unfair to say that only one thing leads to xenophobia in SA. Some of the causes are extremely high levels of joblessness and poverty in South Africa. Crimes committed by African immigrants in South Africa are also responsible. Corruption and abuse of power among law enforcement officers is a driver too. Meanwhile, the Oga patapata and chief activator of the beast itself is careless comments made by their local leaders. These things weave together to get things out of control.

What we need to do is to warn our people who think there are massive economic opportunities in South Africa for the average Nigerian. There is absolutely NONE! Nobody should be deceived. You must be exceptionally skilled to enjoy living in SA. Otherwise, South Africa is superbly nice for holidays. Southee is not for hustling ooo. As an unskilled person, you cannot find a job except the person wants to waste years on the street doing things never bargained for. There are Nigerians who out of frustration end up selling drugs, running prostitution rings, and printing counterfeit money for survival. All of these are extremely grave crimes anywhere. Our people must not see SA as that paradise that can suddenly turn their lizard-self into a crocodile! Most South Africans are hungry, angry, and suffering bitterly, and when they see you, they assume you have come to take their opportunities and will bite you. poverty is real there.

To be fair, I think xenophobic attacks is a very difficult event for the Nigerian government to deal with it. Not that they cannot do anything but their actions may actually make things worse. I personally think our government has been very patient and have acted matured and should be commended. But the area where they must do more is to help victims of xenophobia to get closure. People have lost a lot and many have died too. They must pressure SA for justice in that regard. For now, the best we can all do is to 'hope' the attacks never happen again.

Nigerians must know that Nigerians are not the only africans going to South africa. there is over 5m zimbabweans, 1.5m somalians, 1m Ethiopians, 1.5m mozambiquans, 1m congolese, 800 000 basothos. 800 000 to 1m Nigerians. South africa is generally overwelhm with this influx. There is approximately 10m to 12m mostly illegal foreigners in SA. As it it, it becomes a scramble for resources with the locals. Thats where the problem starts. Some restuarants hire 100% foreigner workers, this does not sit well with the locals. Even nigeria could never allow that to happen, byt its happening in SA.

https://www.businesslive.co.za/bd/national/2020-03-24-over-60-ethiopian-migrants-found-dead-in-container-bound-for-sa/

Many poor migrants travel via Mozambique on their way into SA, the continent’s most industrialised economy, where they usually hope to find better work.

SA is home to industrial concerns and premier service sector firms that are owned by locals. Well they've been connected to the globalized economy for longer and have developed actual companies that make things. Actual companies that dont need govt patronage to survive in the long term.... look around Lag Abj and PH there's a lot around as well.

You have raw materials, midstream processing firms and large scale down stream operations of all sorts. Retail is strong. Tourism is strong. Agric is advanced.Tech (including defense industry) is strong and the financial services sector there is home to every kind of institution from I-Banks to retail to PE to VCs etc. They get to benefit from every ones wealth as well thru finance.JSE is Africa's largest exchange.

Take for e.g Naspers, Africa's biggest firm by market cap. They have diverse interests and actually derive their wealth chiefly from their China based investments in tencent and the rest. Again the point of being more globalized.

Then again, it's most the European populations that hold this wealth.

You were almost correct until you said its the mostly european population that hold this wealth. Many people dont understand how sophisticated South african economic is. The reason you dont find the dangote in south africa is because south african economy is owned by pension money. Even the naspers you are refering too, majority shares are owned by PIC, which is a government workers pension money. Check who works at the government, 95% of government workers are blacks. Even MTN that most nigerians think its owned by whites, PIC is majority shareholders.

I am worried that African countries are divided while the whites continue to exploit Africa in every corner. The problem with africnas, when the going gets tougher, you will see the scrumbling for 3 months VISA for a certain country, just to run away from the problems rather than fight. Hence you end up with these dictators running amok all over the continent.

Not like many africans who choose to run away from poverty instead of fighting their government for better service. Africa is full of cowards. How often do you get to read a foreign citizen do incredible things here as they reside? When Nigerians travel out, they take the host like home and work hard to add value. But how many foreigners do this?

Now you have answered yourself, this is why nigeria finds itself today. Just imagine the benefits it could have been, if those achievements happened in Nigeria.
