The Dan David Prize is a major international award that recognises and supports outstanding contributions to the study of history and other disciplines that shed light on the human past.

It is considered to be the “largest history prize in the world.”

The 2023 winners were announced on February 28, with Aderinto, who is a professor of History and African Diaspora Studies, making the list.

Each of the winners — nine in total — will receive $300,000 to recognize their achievements and support their future work.
The selection committee praised Aderinto’s work “for situating African history at the cutting edge of diverse literatures in the history of sexuality, nonhumans, and violence, noting that it is exceptional to see a single person leading scholarship in all of these fields.”

Aderinto was born in Ibadan in 1979. In 2004, he received his Bachelor’s in History from the University of Ibadan and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Austin in 2010.

In the same year, he started his teaching career at Western Carolina University where he became a full Professor of History in 2021. He later moved to Florida International University in 2022.

The professor has published 8 books, 37 journal articles and book chapters, 41 encyclopedia articles, and 21 book reviews.

His recent book ‘Animality and Colonial Subjecthood in Africa’ examines the role of animals in Nigerian history. He is also presently writing a book and making a documentary on Fuji music.

Aderinto is also the founding president of the Lagos Studies Association and a senior research fellow of the French Institute for Research in Africa.

According to the Washington Post, the Dan David Prize is “the new MacArthur-style ‘genius grant’ for history.”

Selection is by nomination and the awards ceremony will hold in Israel in May.

To be eligible, recipients must exhibit strong potential for excellence, innovation, and leadership that will shape the study of the past for years to come.

“They must be engaged in outstanding and original work related to the study of the human past, employing any chronological, geographical, and methodological focus,” it added.

“Prize winners must have completed at least one major project, the prize is not given for that project, but rather in recognition of the winner’s overall achievements as well as their potential for future excellence.”

Obi won’t have even bothered switch to LP to run for presidency if Tinubu did not emerge. I was personally rooting for star boy. Until you guys brought Tinubu as a flag bearer for APC. Come March 11, every Igbo person in Lagos along with the Omoluabi's (the true owners of Lagos) will come out en masses and vote out Sanwo-Olu, we have taken over Lagos, it's now a Labor party state and we have implemented our machineries everywhere to resist attempts by outsiders from Ogbomosho and Osun state to come and do anyhow, this isn't business as usual..if you do anyhow on that guber election day, we will paint the roads of Lagos with your blood.

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, has been declared the winner of Saturday’s presidential election in Benue State.

Tinubu polled 310,468 to outpace Peter Obi of the Labour Party who scored 308,372 votes.

Also, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party polled 130,081 votes to come a distant third, while Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party scored 4,740.

The total number of registered voters was 2,772,977 and the accredited voters were put at 840,189.

The number of valid votes reached 770,075, while the rejected votes amounted to 27,687, with a total of 797,762 votes cast.

Wild jubilation greeted the announcement of the All Progressives Congress as the highest vote-scoring party at the Shettima Kukawa Polling Unit 023, Lawan Bukar Ward, Maiduguri metropolis, where the APC Vice Presidential Candidate, Kashim Shettima, voted hours earlier.

The APC Scored 126 votes to floor the PDP which garnered 22 votes.

The presiding officer of the PU, Suleiman Abdulhamid, also announced that the New Nigeria Peoples Party and the Labour Party scored 0 votes.

The voting exercise which lasted for about six hours began two hours behind the 08:30 am schedule as officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission arrived late.

The PUNCH reports that Shettima was at the polling unit earlier but left soon after discovering that INEC officials were yet to arrive.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has delivered his Ward I, Polling Unit 14, Egunrege, Ikenne, Ogun State for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Osinbajo voted in his Ikenne country home, Ikenne for the first time after his unit was transferred from Lagos State.

At the polling unit, APC polled 33 votes for the presidency, 39 votes for Senate and 32 votes for House of Representatives. Labour Party polled nine for the presidential election and nil for both Senate and House of Representatives.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled seven, 13 and 12 for president, Senate and House of Representatives, respectively.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has failed to deliver his polling unit for his anointed presidential candidate Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

Obasanjo, who cast his vote at unit 22, ward 11, Olusomi compound at Abeokuta North at 10: 33 am, endorsed Obi but didn’t drum support for his anointed candidate.

When the votes were counted, the Labour Party got only 9 votes to APC’s 56 and PDP’s 7 in the polling unit.

The total number of registered voters at the polling unit was 693. But only 91 voters turned out while 10 ballot papers were voided.

In the senatorial election at the same polling unit; PPD had 31 votes, APC 37, ADP 1, ADC 7, Labour 4 and APM 2 votes.

Obasanjo commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for the introduction of BVAS which he said had improved the electoral process.
