The helpless servant of Chief Mrs. Albert’s household cried. She lay on the tiled floor the L-shaped kitchen, her forehead resting against an orange gas cylinder positioned right of the white four-burner cooker that was still hot from hours of usage. Her legs were sprawled on the floor while her wrapper hung loosely about her waist and her hands were tied together over her head with a cord that was hooked to the handle one of the lower cupboards.

“Don’t beg me o, don’t beg me at all. I am not moved by your tears. What were you doing in my room? Ehnnn Hafusat, answer me. What were you doing there? You are not ready to talk right? Okay, just wait.” Cindy walked across the kitchen to the sink area and opened one of the drawers to search for a pair of scissors. She rummaged through the drawer and when she did not find the scissors, she impatiently reached for the knife holder on the counter top and dragged out a boning knife instead.

“Don’t kill me Aunty Cindy please.” Hafusat begged when she caught sight of the knife. “Don’t kill me. I wasn’t doing anything in your room; I only went to drop the clothes you asked me to wash for you two days ago. Aunty Cindy please, I am begging you with the name of Allah.”

“Who is killing you? Ooooh, so you are indirectly calling me a murderer right?” She asked brandishing the gleaming weapon before Hafusat’s eyes. “You are calling me a murderer abi? You will see today.” She flung the door of the cabinet underneath the sink open and brought out a blender that had been spoiled for more years than she could remember. “Finally, this could be put to use.” She murmured. Angrily, she yanked at the cord of the blender as if to pull it out from its source but when it didn’t budge, she reached for the boning knife and cut the cord off the blender.

Hafusat who was watching her with great trepidation kept pleading. “Aunty Cindy, I am not lying. I did not want to steal from you; I have never stolen from you before, Aunty Cindy please don’t beat me, please.” In response to her plea, Cindy wrapped half of the long cord she’d cut around right palm while she let the other half- the half she’d use in executing the beating- hang loose.

Voooooooooop- the sound of the cord in air as it landed on Hafusat’s legs. “Maybe you are the one who has been stealing everything I have been looking for,” Cindy shouted. “My black Armani bag that got missing last week, I am sure you were the one who took it. You would confess today oo.” Craaaaaaack- another lash of the whip landed on Hafusat’s back. “You are only sixteen years and you want to start wearing Armani bags, you want to reap where you did not sow right?”

Hafusat was sobbing. “I don’t have anything to confess to, Aunty Cindy.” She was gasping for breath, slimy saliva dripping off the corner of her mouth. “I cannot say I took something I did not take. Please Aunty Cindy, I wasn’t the one who took your Armani bag. Yeeee!” She screamed when a kick landed on her stomach.

“You this thief, simple things you cannot do. That was how the other day in October, I asked you to stay with Nathaniel in my room when I had to leave to use the bathroom. Before I came back, he had gone with my diary and your silly self didn’t notice. He is dead now right? I know how much you cried when you heard the news of his death, don’t worry, you’d be with him in heaven by the time I am done with you.”

“Aunty Cindy, I didn’t know it was your diary. It was on your nightstand when he saw it and before I could say anything, he had left with it. I tried stopping Uncle Nat but he wouldn’t listen to me. Please Aunty, please, plea.. ple.. pl..” Hafusat fainted.

PrettyCindy: I was quite unlucky that i ended up with a cruel human as husband (now ex). 3 months after marriage when i didn't take in, he threatened to impregnate another woman soon. I told him the only reason i was sick was because i was pregnant meaning that the sin i committed was sleeping with him as my husband. A day later he told me i was the most unimportant person in his life! Anyway long story short we seperated when i was about two months pregnant. He told me to get rid of the pregnancy since we were seperating and he proved his point by refusing to give me money for ante natal and by trying to kill the baby in my womb when he battered me but he didn't succeed. With the help of God i was able to carry my baby perfectly fine and put to bed safely. He is about 5months old now and indeed a blessing to my life and i love him with my with my life. If i had stayed with that man, i would have either lost the pregnancy or committee suicide cos of frustration or would have been pushed to the wall to do the unthinkable.
