BusinessRe: Consumer Prices In Nigeria Rise By 92% In 2016 by qleap2all(m): 9:02am On Dec 28, 2016
Truth234:
The cost of goods in Nigeria rose to a record high in 2016, following the persistent increase in prices of goods across the nation.

The consumer price index, which measures inflation rate surged from 9.62 percent in January to about 92 percent in November.

While the CPI figures for December would be released in January 2017, it is projected by experts to remain within 18 percent.

However, the federal government during its National Economic Recovery Growth Plan (NERGP) said it was targeting a growth rate of about 7 percent between 2017 and 2020. This, experts believed will moderate inflation rate accordingly and boost consumer spending.

Speaking on the matter, prof. Akpan Ekpo, the Director General of the West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management said the government need to embark on structural economic reform to negate some of the challenges facing the nation.

“Our economy only consumes, we do not produce anything that brings foreign exchange. So, what you do is that you direct policies that would encourage people to encourage and manufacture, no matter how little, something that would add value, before you export. What we need now are structural policies. What we have seen is that the central bank has been doing a lot of what it ought not to be doing. The central bank is pushing out a lot of intervention funds. A lot of times, their intervention funds have fiscal coloration. And that is not supposed to be their business.

“So for me, recessions are recurrent in the market system. It comes and goes, but it gives you an opportunity to make sure that you manage the economy properly. No two recessions are alike. Also, they need experts to help them manage the economy. It is not a tea party.

“They need technocrats to advise them. And in our system, no government has a long-run luxury. Every government has four years, so they have to move fast. My worry for Nigeria is more than the economic recession. Let me ask you as question. If for example, the next quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth becomes positive marginally, that means the economy may be out of recession. But has the problem of unemployment been solved? Has that solved the problem of inflation? Has that solved the poverty problem? It has not! So, we need to carry out long-term structural reforms and be serious about what we are doing,” Ekpo stressed.

Nigeria Consumers are docile and ineffective, in other climes prices would have fall with people's apathy to high price

The Government should not short change these ladies please.

The Government should learn to honor it's heroes, and those that give their time for service to the Country. Just earlier today,we read about Soldiers shooting somewhere in the North because, according to some News outlets have been shortchanged by the Government too.

For those saying they should collect the ones they are presented with now, then the rest later. I tell them, that is absolutely wrong. Is the NFF Chairman collecting half of his pay?is Solomon Dalung getting paid by bits?no.

This has to stop.

Pay the girls their wages/bonuses.

SportsRe: Gambler Incurs N145,000 Debt While Celebrating N36,000 Win by qleap2all(m): 11:57am On Dec 12, 2016
Obi88:
The police in Lagos have arrested a gambler,
Yakubu Bashir, for alleged fraud at the
Bendel Inn on Ipodo Road, Ikeja, Lagos.
Bashir was picked up for his inability to pay
for drinks and food worth N145,000.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Bashir had gone to
the hotel on Wednesday with his friends to
celebrate winning a sports bet. He was said to have won N36,000.
He reportedly ordered assorted drinks and food
for himself, his friends and other people in the
bar, with a promise to pay the bills.
It was gathered that after the drinking and
merriment, the manager, Alaba, approached
Bashir, telling him that his bill was
N145,000.
Trouble, however, started when the suspect
said he had only N36,000 and begged that he
should be allowed to pay the balance in
installment.
Our correspondent learnt that in the ensuing
altercation, Bashir was detained, while the
manager reported the case at the Ikeja Police
Division, leading to his arrest.
“I am an NCE holder and work as a security
guard in a hotel. On December 6, I placed a
sports bet and won N36,000. Out of
happiness, I went to the bar with my friends
to celebrate my breakthrough. The money
was in my bank account. I wanted to
withdraw it the following morning because
we wanted to pass the night at the bar. I
explained to a waiter that I would give him
N36,000 and pay him up by January, but he
refused,” the 26-year-old suspect reportedly
told the police.
A police prosecutor, Inspector Benedict
Aigbokhan, brought Bashir before an Ikeja
Magistrate’s Court on two counts of conduct
likely to cause breach of the peace and fraud.
The charges read, “That you, Yakubu Bashir,
on December 7, 2016, at about 1.10am at
Bendel Inn on Ipodo Road, Ikeja, Lagos, in
the Ikeja Magisterial District, did conduct
yourself in a manner likely to cause a breach
of the peace by ordering for assorted drinks
and food for your friends worth N145,000 and
refusing to pay, thereby committing an
offence punishable under Section 166 of the
Criminal Law, No. 11, Vol.44, Law of Lagos
State of Nigeria, 2011.
“That you, on the same date, time and
place, in the aforesaid magisterial district, did
fraudulently collect assorted drinks and food
valued at N145,000 promising to pay,
knowing same to be false, thereby committing
an offence punishable under Section 312 of
the Criminal Law, No 11, Vol.44, Law of
Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.”
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty
before the presiding magistrate, Mrs. O.A.
Akokhia, and was granted bail in the sum of
N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The case was adjourned till January 25, 2017.

Are you minding those dumb folks? By critical industries, we should be referring to machineries and equipments that aren't produced locally. Raw materials and finished products like rice and sugar are in no way part of critical industries.
Only if you are aware of the volume of this two items were being consumed in Nigeria both domestic and industrially, then you will know they are critical.

If you can ask your father/mother about their 1983-1985 hunger experiences you won't dare come online to celebrate nonsensical nonsense. And, believe me when this jungle you are clamouring for or celebrating in advance matures, hunger will reset your brain without your consent.

Do us a favour & ask your parents how they queued up then to buy salt, sugar etc or how people lose their goods if you sell above the fixed price of Buhari/Idiagbon.

All these indomie generation peeps sef
Yea you're right, the situation then was that some marketers are exploiting the masses due to scarce imported essential goods. The government then set up the boards to control price, a basic economic practice. At this point in time, I believe it should be to bring down inflation and should be for limited time. You will agree with me Nigeria profess to be a capitalist nation with little or no local production. Do you you traders do buy 14 bunches of plantain from farmers at N1000 - 1500, then offers to sell to consumers @N2000-2500/bunch!!
