The Naira is actually higher than the Cedi, a lot of Nigerians have this misconception that it is the other way round, something a simple google search easily rebuff. The Cedis is actually heavily redenominated, with four zeros being removed. The current exchange rate is about 1 cedi = 66 Naira, in reality it is 10,000 cedis = 66 Naira.

If you want to know the real value of the Ghanaian Cedis, add four zeros to the amount of the currency figure being displayed. On paper the Cedis might seem strong but that is the essence of re-domination, it is mostly for ease of transaction and aesthetic. With the new Ghanaian Cedis issued in 2007, four zeros were removed while the value of the currency remains the same. In actuality, 1 cedi = 10,000 Ghanaian Cedis.

50 cedis is actually 500,000 cedis and so on . Nigeria dabbled with the idea of redominating our currency ( Charles Soludo as CBN governor ) but decided against it, if we had done so, 1000 naira would’ve been say N10 , which doesn’t change what N1000 would’ve gotten you before.

Nigeria is still better than Ghana tho, that's why a foolish fool like you from that useless Ghana is here on Nairaland.

BTW Your currency is rubbish removing two Zeros from your rubbish cedis doesn't mean your currency have any value tho. Stupid.
POINT OF CORRECTION : They removed four zero "0000", that was redomination of the Ghanaian Cedis in the year 2007

In the real sense if you want to get the true value of their cosmetic currency "Cedis" add four zeros.

1 Cedis = 10,000 Cedis
10,000 Cedis = 67 NGN

And not the cosmetic 1 Cedis = 67 NGN you see on paper.
Sports › Bundesliga Restart Blow As Dresden Squad Placed In 14-day Quarantine by Quelme(op): 9:57pm On May 09, 2020
Dynamo Dresden, who play in the second tier of German Football, have put their entire squad and coaching staff into two-week isolation after two players tested positive for coronavirus.

The Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 are due to restart on Saturday, 16 May.

It is set to be the first European league to restart following the coronavirus shutdown.

"The fact is that we can neither train nor participate in a game in the next 14 days," said Dynamo.

On Thursday, the German Football Association (DFB) said the season would resume under strict health protocols that ban fans from the stadium and require players to have Covid-19 testing.

About 300 people, including players, staff and officials, will be in or around the stadiums during match days.

The league has been suspended since 13 March. Clubs returned to training in mid-April, with players working in groups.

But on Saturday Dresden, who are bottom of Bundesliga 2, said they would be unable to fulfil the initial fixtures.

"In the past few weeks, we have made enormous efforts in terms of personnel and logistics in order to strictly implement all the prescribed medical and hygienic measures, "said Dynamo sports manager Ralf Minge .

"We are in contact with the responsible health authority and the DFL (German Football League) to coordinate all further steps."

Dresden were due to resume the season on 17 May at Hannover 96.

Analysis

John Bennett, BBC World Service

The Dynamo Dresden situation proves that any league will be balanced on a knife edge when football resumes, even with all the planning and all the expertise that has gone into the Bundesliga restart.

DFL boss Christian Seifert admitted as much on Friday when he said that they are "playing under probation".

The truth for football authorities everywhere is that there are no certainties at the moment and there will be setbacks.

The only good news is that although there are a lot of fixtures to pack in, time is relatively on German football's side compared to the other big European leagues, who are still wondering if and when they'll be able to return.

Now the DFL will be hoping that this will be the only fixture they'll have to postpone on their high profile re-opening weekend.

Crime › Re: I Don't Want To Die, Please Help Me- Nigerian Lady Trafficked To Oman by Quelme: 9:05am On May 03, 2020
RiyadhGoddess:
Uhmmm
Greed is all I see here.
Greed on the lady's part and greed on the agent's part.

1) How much did you pay for your supposed USA visa? I bet nothing because most times, this greedy agents collects no dime or a token from these girls.

2) How on earth would you believe that someone will help you to the USA for free or for a token to go and workhuh Is he Donald Trump or one of the Consulatehuh When you get such mouth watering offers, watch it!

3) Now from supposed USA visa to Oman Visa, you saw it very well that it is different from the initial greedy arrangement yet you still embarked on the journey even when you had enough time to back off.

4) I am sorry to say this but 98% of the ladies who travels are fully aware of the country visa they are processing. As a fact, if you check most of these agents adverts on the road or anywhere, it is boldly written "work in Oman" "work in Saudi Arabia" "work in Kuwait" " work in Lebanon " "work in Bahrain" as a nanny, cleaner and maid. I have never seen "work in USA" "work in UK" as a maid or nanny. Even to see "work in UAE" as a maid or nanny dey hard because e no dey.

5) Only few agents, I mean very few one or two don't mention what these girls are going to do there but with my experience and encounter with some of these girls in Riyadh, most agents tells them before hand the type of job they are going to do there. They spell it out that it is "Ise Omodo" ki ema nu ile ke de ma toju awon omo won (To clean the house and take care of your employers children). Agents use to say it from the beginning to these girls seeking greener pastures in the middle east. Infact some agents use to mention it that na Ashawo work you wan go do. Atleast an agent at agege once told me categorically. He said I should pick the one I want; Ashawo work e dey, House maid work e dey, Cleaner work e dey, Cook ooo e dey lols. Even the ones taking girls to europe dey loud am to the girls say na Ashawo work.
The ONLY thing these agents don't say is how TEDIOUS, Tiring these job are.
Ahhhh it is very very very stressful, OLE O LE SISE NI SAUDI TABI AWON ILU TI O JINA SI SAUDI (A lazy person can't work in Saudi or countries surrounding them- middle east) the same thing is applicable to the men. The same way we have Nigerian ladies working there, that's the same way we have Nigerian men hustling there. My former boss had a Nigerian driver and 2 Philippine driver. He also had 6 maids- 2 Nigerians, 3 philipino and 1 Ethiopian. None of the jobs were easy...Though I experienced both sweet and bad but the sweeter ones were more than the bad ones. Bad ones in the sense that when I forget to do what I am supposed to do---job description, madam go change am for me but I adjusted quickly and it grew better especially with my driver colleague Egbon Dele. Hahahahaha very funny man. My boss spent all his years in Canada so he wasn't really like the typical Arab. One is wives is even an Indian so I will say he's liberal...

6) Now these girls who most likely haven't worked as a maid before, when they get there and their strength can't carry the job, they start to grumble and complain to their boss (kai kai kai Arab man hates it ooo). At first they will try to pet you to do the job, they will even give you a welcome party and that is usually the early stage when you see the girls posting upandan on Facebook the food they are eating and how well they are enjoying, intimidating the boyfriends they left behind or the female bestie who refused to embark on the journey with them. They usually enjoy their first month or so that's a strategy for them to feel at home and adjust to the new environment because some times some of the girls experience home sickness so the employers understands this very much. After the welcome period is over, their employers moves them to the next phase which is WORK. Yes you are there to Work so you must WORK. That's when the non stop Work starts. If you are not the smart type, work go kill you there. When these girls start getting tired because of the non stop work, they begin to show it in their actions, they start frowning and sometimes refuse completely not to work or say they are sick. Sickness is something the employers won't take serious because they think it's just an excuse not to work. Not until they see the real sickness, like vomit, high fever and all, OYO is your case ooo na panadol and sorry you go get and you will still work on top it.
When madam begins to suspect that this maid is changing, she is lazy or the maid is not just working as expected, they report to their husband's because most of them can't speak English but their husbands can speak English. Now oga will call the maid to find out what her problem is. If she says she won't to go back home that she can't do the job anymore, Oga will try to calm and pet her and even promise her heaven and earth. I doesn't change anything because the maid do not have the power for the Job and madam is expecting more from the made which ends up causing issues. That is when Oga use to change it for the maid. They get seriously mad because of the money already paid to the office to hire a maid. They will take the maid back to the office. When the maid gets to the office, the MD of that agency will question her and ask if she wants to be deployed to another home. If she says yes, she gets it but if she says No she wants to go back to her country they will say OK but be ready to take care of your flight ticket yourself because the maid didn't work till the agreed period signed which is 2 years. If you don't have the money to return hime , they will call the police to come get you out of their office and the police will keep you among those awaiting deportation and you can be there for months till it gets to your turn. There the maid will meet her new colleagues waiting to be deported. Anything you see na im you go chop that is if you see it sef.
It is at these point that these girls cries out and forming victims or acting like they didn't know that they were traveling to the middle east to work as maids. When they can no longer bear the stressful job, they change the music and start saying I didn't know I didn't know bla bla bla.

7) Some of these girls knew where they were going, they left the country with their game plans, some achieved it while some failed.
At least there are those who endured till the last and they returned back home. While there are those who went with the aim of snatching madams husband and they successful did it for the monetary game. There were those who went there to steal Gold jewelries and money. I know of a girl in our neighborhood who did and how she escaped to Nigeria till today I no know but it must have been a well arranged game from home sha. While some who tried it got arrested. Some of those who got caught even changed the music saying they were set up or something to gain sympathy..

9) let me loud it again, a Lazy person cannot not work in the middle east. Domestic Work there is crazy. You must be a JAKI (Donkey) to survive there. Don't let any friends photos on the social media deceive you, they will not tell you the stressful part of the job. If you must go, just pray to be posted in Fadeyi Oloro's house.
Also know that when you go, you are not only serving one person. You will be serving madam, Oga, the overgrown pampered children, spoilt toddlers and both extended families hehehehehehe.
Me I cannot say you should not go and hutsle ooo because the last time I did, some of my friends thought I didn't want them to be great but I will advise that if you must go hutsle as a lady, don't ever consider middle east for domestic jobs except you are sponsoring yourself for other jobs( health, malls, companies) NOT domestic jobs I REPEAT! Go elsewhere.

10) As for the girl crying out, I see no reason why shouldn't be returned home. Though the contract is 2 years but there is a minimum which is sometimes 6 months to 12 months . A maid who stayed till 1 year is an honor sef so the girl can go back home... The necessary authorities handling it should look into it and help her return.

Please excuse my gbagaun...Okay let me prepare for Church...
I can't believe I read through word for word. Damn, this was so so insightful. You seem knowledgeable when it comes to working in the middle east. There are certain information I will like to get from you. Can I connect with you?
Health › Russian Prime Minister Tests Positive For Coronavirus by Quelme(op): 7:10pm On Apr 30, 2020
Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has been diagnosed with Covid-19. The news was announced on Thursday evening, live on national television, during a video link with President Vladimir Putin.

First Deputy Prime Minister Andrey Belousov will step in as interim head of government during Mishustin’s recovery.

It appears Mishustin - who replaced Dmitry Medvedev as PM in January - received the result of his test while at work. Earlier in the day, he headed a governmental session, conducted remotely. His diagnosis makes him the second major world leader - after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson - who is known to have contracted the infection.

"It just became known that the tests that I've passed for coronavirus gave a positive result," Mishustin told the president "In this regard, and in accordance with the requirements of Rospotrebnadzor [the national health watchdog], I must self-isolate and comply with the instructions of doctors: I have to do this to protect my colleagues."

"What's happening to you now could happen to anyone," Putin replied. The President assured Mishustin that no major decisions would be taken without his input while he battles the infection. Putin also noted that members of the government are at particular risk during the Covid-19 crisis as direct contact with colleagues cannot be avoided.

Mishustin told Putin that his cabinet will continue working uninterrupted, and that he’ll keep in touch with the president. “I’m planning to remain in active contact with my colleagues via phone and video conferences,” he said. The 54-year-old has played a major role - alongside Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin - in Russia's response to the pandemic.

He also appealed to Russians "to take most seriously" the threat of coronavirus. He encouraged everyone to stay home over the May holidays. Russia normally has two major celebrations at this time of year - Labor Day on May 1 and the annual May 9 celebration of Soviet Russia's World War Two victory over Germany. It also informally marks the start of 'dacha season' in many parts of the country, with the roads packed as city dwellers head to their country boltholes.

Putin subsequently signed a decree making Belousov interim head of government. Belousov is a Moscow-native, like Mishustin, and has served in various positions, under both Putin and Medevedev, over the past two decades. Since 2013, he has been an economic advisor at the Kremlin.

There have been 106,498 confirmed Covid-19 cases registered in Russia so far, with 1,073 fatalities. The country has introduced strict lockdown measures to stem the spread of the highly contagious disease. Earlier this week, President Putin said that the restrictions will be prolonged at least until May 11.

UNDERSTANDING WHY NIGERIANS REACTED TO THE DEATH OF ABBA KYARI THE WAY THEY DID.
On the surface, it will appear rather odd to see the average Nigerians jubilating on the death of a top government official, especially given the cause of his death. But on a deeper reflection, you see in what is going on the contradictions that make up Nigeria.

The people see the government officials as oppressors. They hold them responsible for the injustice, hardship and suffering they endure in their daily lives. The people do not see the government as something that exists for their wellbeing, but rather for their oppression, exploitation and enslavement.

Perceiving government officials as the enemies of the people, the death of any of the officials is logically perceived as the death of an enemy. It is natural to celebrate the death of one's enemy.
But all this occur in a symbolic framework. Abba Kyari symbolized government, which symbolized oppression. Most people did not met Abba Kyari in person. In fact, he might have been a good man to his family and friends. But that's not the issue. He represented the evil known as Nigerian Government.

I was taken aback by the fact that the nature of death would have made people feel somber, given that the entire world has fallen victim to the rampaging virus. But why should the people pay any special attention to the virus as cause of Abba Kyari's death? The government officials never felt humbled by Coronavirus. They used the pandemic as excuse to steal money meant for relief to the suffering masses affected by the containment measure against the virus. Also, there was a touch of irony to the fate of Abba Kyari. If only the government he was part of had invested in improving Nigeria's healthcare, he might have lived. He died a victim of the negligence he meant for others.
It is sad, but totally understandable that Nigerians would rejoice at the death of a top government official.
On the other side of the coin, you see the Nigerian society for what it really is - a people bitter and malicious out of years of injustice and oppression. The average Nigerian person is angry, vicious and vindictive. Regardless of what turned him or her into such a bundle of malice, and no matter the justification, it is a difficult experience to manage a Nigerian society. Indeed, both the officials and the people are now equally balanced in malice and it no longer makes any difference which side caused the other or which side is the effect of the other.
The big question is whether the proper lessons have been learned from Abba Kyari's death and the reactions thereto.
Foreign Affairs › California Gov Announces $125 Million Relief For Illegal Immigrants Over Covid-1 by Quelme(op): 7:18am On Apr 16, 2020
California will be the first state in the US to provide financial relief to illegal immigrants amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a series of new measures by his state to provide financial relief to citizens suffering because of Covid-19 lockdown measures. Among the measures is an eye-catching $125 million fund for illegal immigrants living within the state.

“California is the most diverse state in the nation. Our diversity makes us stronger and more resilient. Every Californian, including our undocumented neighbors and friends, should know that California is here to support them during this crisis,” Newsom said.

The $125 million will be a mix of public and private funds, with $75 million coming from the state and another $50 million from Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees (GCIR), a network of foundations focused on immigration issues, which has promised to raise the funds through private means.

According to a press release detailing the fund, around 150,000 undocumented workers will receive a one-time cash payment of $500 per adult, with a $1,000 cap on each household. People can apply for payments starting next month.

The move is a response to illegal immigrants not being eligible for financial relief from the CARES Act, due to their citizenship status.

Newsom noted that 10 percent of his state’s workforce are undocumented workers who have paid billions in state and local taxes.

Despite President Trump’s hard stance on the southern border with Mexico and his ramping up of deportations of illegal immigrants, California has remained the most aggressive state in the US when it comes to giving benefits to non-citizens. The state became the first in the nation last year to give health benefits to adults below the age of 26 living within the country illegally, and he has proposed expanding those benefits to seniors 65 years and older this year.

The new relief fund is sure to be used as ammo in the ongoing illegal immigration debate against Democrats by conservatives, who have consistently argued against non-citizens receiving government benefits puts an unneeded strain on the country.

Crime › INTERPOL Uncovers COVID-19 Face Masks Fraud Fund Destined For Nigerian Account by Quelme(op): 2:22pm On Apr 15, 2020
The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) has announced it uncovered a sophisticated COVID-19 face masks fraud scheme with the proceed destined for a Nigerian account.

INTERPOL in a press statement on Tuesday elucidating the scheme said in mid-March, German health authorities contracted two sales companies in Zurich and Hamburg to procure EUR 15 million (about N6.3billion) worth of face masks.

This was part of Germany’s effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The nation, as of April 15th, 2020 recorded 132,210 confirmed cases of the virus with 3,495 deaths.

The whole scheme started with an email address and website linked to a legitimate company in Spain selling face masks, according to the INTERPOL narration.

“Through email correspondence, the company initially claimed to have 10 million masks, only for the delivery to fall through. As consolation, they then referred the buyers to a ‘trusted’ dealer in Ireland. The Irish middleman promised to put them in touch with a different supplier, this time in the Netherlands.”

The new supplier in Netherland according to the scammer was capable of supplying the needed 10 million face masks but will need an upfront payment of EUR 1.5 million (about N631,210,863) for an initial delivery of 1.5 million.

“The buyers initiated a bank transfer to Ireland and prepared for delivery, which involved 52 lorries and a police escort to transport the masks from a warehouse in the Netherlands to the final destination in Germany.

“Just before the delivery date, the buyers were informed that the funds had not been received and that an emergency transfer of EUR 880,000 [about N370.4 million] straight to the Dutch supplier was required to secure the merchandise,” INTERPOL recalled.

Sensing something fishy, the buyers immediately contacted their bank in Germany which relayed the development to the INTERPOL’s Financial Crimes Unit.

INTERPOL in the chase for the money engaged “banks, financial intelligence units, and judicial authorities, as well as partner organizations Europol and EUROJUST”.

“INTERPOL contacted its National Central Bureau in Dublin as well as the Irish bank. Prompt intervention by the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau allowed them to freeze the 1.5 million in the account and identify the Irish company involved.”

“They adapted their sales pitches to take advantage of strained supply chains and generate huge profits. I can only salute the quick work of both the private and public authorities involved. INTERPOL will continue its work on the case – and the many others like it – in close cooperation with all of our partners,” INTERPOL Chief stated.

Two suspects according to INTERPOL has been arrested in the Netherland while more arrests are likely as the investigation proceeds.
