If you ask this on the GRE thread, many people can offer useful suggestions to you. tactmayor: |
Don't ask for funding.Don't jump the gun. I'm very certain he knows that working on projects as a PhD student requires financial assistance. Focus on been an ideal match for his research projects. I'm thinking if he doesn't have research grants, he won't do projects at that level. In your response, simply say you want to be a research assistant for one of his projects (Name it). -Also talk about how your research interests and academic qualifications will make you an asset his research group. Then mention how your experiences in the past will make you excel in his projects. This my opinion. If you're not convinced about funding, you can still ask. I know how it feels to be uncertain about something as vital as funding. jelmusboy: |
Multiple funded Research Assistantship positions (for PhD students) are available at the Environmental Fluid Mechanics Lab at the Center for Natural Resources at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (http://nrdp.njit.edu), located 20 minutes from downtown New York City. Students could be enrolled in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related field. The researchers in the CNR have been conducting research on fundamental and applied aspects of fluid dynamics, especially in relation to multiphase flow. The research is 70/30 modeling/experimental, and the latter would be conducted using the latest techniques for detection and visualization. Candidates with Master degree are preferred, and they should have good communication skills, willing-to-learn attitude, and solid knowledge of fluid mechanics and mathematics. The candidates should be able to meet the NJIT graduate school admission requirements: (GPA/GRE/TOEFL, https://www.njit.edu/graduatestudies/index.php)Prior experience in CFD modeling and coding is an asset but not required. This is a fully funded position to be started as soon as possible (2018 Fall). Please send your resume to wenji619@gmail.com OR newlinzhao@gmail.com. All resumes will be carefully reviewed but only competitive candidates will be contacted. |
It depends on the terms of the scholarship. Ordinarily, you won't be offered two funding opportunities at once. You may be asked to jettison one. arTiculaTe01: |
Personally, I don't see much correlation between the GRE and succeeding in graduate school. Yes, the GRE could measure certain abilities but it isn't an overall indicator of success. In my two GRE attempts, the difference in both test outcomes was simply practice and my approach to the examinations. I don't think anything extraordinary happened in between. Nevertheless, I don't think the GRE should be scrapped as it could be a disadvantage to international students. Schools in the USA don't trust our degrees as such and the GRE is just a way of showing them that despite what they think, we can still measure up. Even though most schools claim they look at applications holistically, sometimes they screen applicants based on their minimum requirement which is usually test scores and GPA. If the GRE is scrapped, it might be difficult to get into some universities especially the top ones. Some professors have certain biases towards applicant's former university or the reputation of his former thesis supervisor. This is my opinion though. |
Usually they will ask you to register for free then they will send the link to you. You just have to keep an eye on the admissions page. tescoman90: |
Oregon State - $85 ; George Washington - Free last year as I attended the webinar; Stevens- $60 though most times, they waive applications fees. You can also check the schools website if there is a new development. MrCuteking: |
The fact that this is news is a problem. |
I don't usually believe these people but I have to say AMEN to this! Nigerians have suffered enough. |
There are schools that require just GRE. All the schools I applied to waived TOEFL for me either because I was a Nigerian or because I did my masters in the UK. So, yes you can apply with your GRE only. Schols like Stevens, Oregon state, George Washington university, Michigan Tech etc don't require TOEFL from Nigerians. MrCuteking: |
It all depends on the school 's admission policy. Some schools requires that you apply first without securing a supervisor. Many of them actually do this. Very few will ask you to get a supervisor before applying. If your interests tallies with a faculty members research interest, he will either contact you for further details or outrightly offered you admission. Many won't want to commit to a candidate who has not taken out time and resources to apply. petlaz: |
Some do but I want to think they are in the minority. jelmusboy: |
Contact the graduate school Coordinator and ask for funding opportunities. You can also mail your potential supervisor and tell him you're interested in working with him or her. He will most likely tell you about funding. jelmusboy: |
There's no guarantee that you will survive in Nigeria with your 100 million. As Ayo Sogunro once said, everything in Nigeria is designed to kill you. |

A good PhD is funded and universities/Professors recruit the very best to do research for them.It is like a job. Positions are offered to the most qualified. Masters degrees as you rightly pointed out has become cash cows for universities.Sometimes, people are admitted to Masters degree programs to make up the numbers. That's doesn't happen for a PhD. It is easier to get admitted for a masters degree than a PhD. If the wrong applicant is given a PhD positon, it affects the Professor's research work., EZEIGBO1OFIMO: |
PhD in Electrical engineering should be easier to get than MS in the same course ? Interesting. Chidinho10: |
I'm sure Chimamanda Adiche will like this ! Lol |
Admission with funding is always competitive in top schools. It isn't always about GRE scores but your whole application. However, for you to get into those schools, everything needs to be in order. I know someone who had a first class In chemical Engineering and 166 Quant score (GRE )but he couldn't get into University of Texas , Austin. Purdue, University of California,Irvine and University of Texas Austin are top schools that attract the very best. With a good GPA and your test scores , You get into a couple of schools especially medium ranked schools. Wiseoldman: |
Good choice of schools. Number 1,2 and 4 are top schools. In choosing schools , your profile and area of research matters. Make sure that before you apply, you get all the required information you need. Ask the graduate school Coordinator the right questions e.g Funding opportunities, required test scores, whether you need to upload or send in your transcripts etc. Send me an e-mail then I can forward the GRE materials I have. Also go through the GRE thread. There are lots of valuable information there. Cheers. gudnews212: |
Personal Opinion: I think it will be worth it. USA has alot of top schools and because some of the schools don't make it to the top doesn't mean they are not good. Energy engineering will be a great course as you will get be exposed to a variety of aspects as it pertains to renewable energy systems. Whether you decide to go the academia or industry, that course will be useful. https://www.uml.edu/Catalog/Graduate/Engineering/Energy-Engineering/Masters-Program.aspx After checking the link above, I was impressed with the course content. If you have the means to fund your education, please do. It will be worth it. Renewable energy research is well funded and it is also multidisciplinary. StevDesmond: |
Congrats man. I remember you from the GRE thread. Jumybecks: |
This didn't start today. |
Tell your 'friend' to do a Google search. It is that easy. No matter what is suggested here, your 'friend' will still make the final decision. When you do the bulk of the research yourself, it is then productive to get useful suggestions here. By the way, why didn't your friend attend American University of Nigeria since you own the school? Lol PresidentAtiku: |
Check with the school to know if they require you to send in official transcripts when you apply. Most schools require that you simply upload your official transcripts for the purpose of admission processing. When you're offered a place, you then send in your official transcripts directly from the school. Do your research well before you apply to any school. It will save you some expenses. MrCuteking: |
Okay no worries. Have you taken the GRE? Apply early so that you will have a variety of options. graciousify: |
This fall ? It is late; Two months away. Or have you started the admission process already? It is still late except you want to fund yourself and the school is willing to accept you. graciousify: |
You can apply. I guess you mean fall 2019? Just submit your transcripts so far. Are you interested in a PhD related to your first degree or a DBA ? graciousify: |
I'm just curious. How do you guys get these stuff at subsidized rate? lincoffm: |
The guy never had a girl friend. She just showed her true colour when the opportunity presented itself. |
Wow! |
This man must be really confused politically. |
