Governors from 24 States on Friday met with Vice President Goodluck Jonathan to convey the decision of the Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF) endorsing him as Acting President. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the Chairman of the Forum and the governor of Kwara state, Bukola Saraki, led the delegation to the meeting, which was held at the State House, Presidential Villa, Abuja. The unscheduled meeting, which was held behind closed-doors, lasted for more than 30 minutes and the forums chairman, Mr. Saraki, spoke with the State House Correspondents after the meeting, saying that the forum decided that the vice president should become acting president in order to move the nation forward. ``We associate ourselves with the court rulings that have been given recently on the constitutional issue regarding the President and the Vice President. ``We also resolve that the Vice President has been acting admirably going by some of the actions that have so far been taken. ``Also, we have now agreed to meet with the leadership of the National Assembly to urge them to pass a resolution, recognising the Vice President as the acting president in the interest of moving the nation forward,'' he said. Asked whether the National Assembly could pass such a resolution without the President transmitting a letter as required by Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution, Mr. Saraki said that the decision was taken in the interest of the country. Nigeria's ailing President Umaru Yar'Adua will write a letter handing power over to his vice-president, his adviser has told the BBC. The letter, formally informing the Senate that Mr Yar'Adua is on "medical vacation", automatically means his deputy becomes acting president. The president's allies have previously resisted calls for him to step aside. He has been in a hospital in Saudi Arabia since November, prompting fears of a power vacuum and street protests. The president is suffering from an inflammation of the lining around the heart and has long suffered from kidney problems. Nigeria's powerful state governors have said they believe Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan should be acting president. Cabinet split The BBC's Caroline Duffield in Lagos says Nigeria's political struggle over the president's fitness to rule may be nearing an endgame. The president's special adviser on legislative affairs, Abba Aji, did not say when Mr Yar'Adua would write the letter but he said there would be no "undue delay". http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/8501301.stm |
Depilot:Do you people even know what you want, when there is military regime you will say you want civilian, now theres civilian you say military should come and clean up, rubbish! Thats why Nigeria is not moving from the same position people like you take a step forward and 2back a military coup is NOT what Nigeria needs! |
this guy you don come again, go and fight andoakaa with your energy abeg |
@OP If Fashola is full of deception and criminality Pls what would you say about Ibori, Akala, Aondoakaa and others if you are blind to realise that Lagos is becoming more known internationally than ever during fashola's tenure |
Justcash:I wonder too oh Well said Justcase and kaecy OP and his people should use their energy to fight the Governors that are busy stealing public funds instead of coming here and putting down a man doing his best to make his state better. |
What you dont understand about leadership and governance is, it is not always the person that comes up with an initiative that always gets the credit, indeed Fashola is completing projects Tinubu started on the other hand Fashola is starting projects which will be concluded by another Governor. Take example the light rail will most likely not be concluded during Fashola, he wanted to build a new airport which was not approved, if it was approved will take years to complete. I dont have the figures but like you said lagos generates N20billion per month personally Fashola cannot monitor everything and i believe he is doing his best. Pls tell me a governor in Nigeria that you feel is more proactive |
@Forpeace you nor get sense, for you to think Fashola does not deserve the best governor award, how many state governors have you seen completing and even improving what their predecessors have done Your myopic view of things is what makes you think Fashola is not doing anything, and i'm not saying he is perfect but for one man to try and manage all those projects going on in Lagos im sure there can be some lapses where some people inflat contracts You are one of the people that are against progress in Nigeria, infact im sure you are against Ribadu, El-rufai and soludo and praise Ibori, Alamesegha & Akala |
Can you believe stories like Tribune - OBJ betrayed me –Yar’Adua • Turai consults with spiritualists in Mecca - 01/02/2010 Vanguard - Yar’Adua begs Saudi Monarch for ambulance - 01/02/2010 Does it even make sense to the Editor Publishing it? |
Why do Nigerian Newspapers Publish all sorts of fabricated stories just to sell From Yar'adua to Fasola, nowadays its hard to believe newspapers cos of the conflicting news they carry From Thisday to Guardian, Vanguard, Next, Punch, Sunnews, tribune God Help the Federal Republic of Nigeria! |
You'd have to be desperate to want a takeover by the Nigerian army. Nigeria's generals plundered the oil-rich country and executed opponents in a series of dictatorships from 1966 to 1999. And yet, in the taxi ranks, sports bars and five-star hotels in Lagos and Abuja, there are more and more whispers wishing the generals were back. Not that people see a military regime as a good thing. But, say some, it might just be better than the dreadful present: a President, Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, confined to his sick bed in Saudi Arabia for two months but refusing to hand over to his deputy; the government of Africa's most populous country adrift; a civil war likely to re-start in the southern oil fields; hundreds killed in religious clashes in the north; and fresh national shame after a young Nigerian tried to blow up an airplane over Detroit on Christmas Day. (See pictures of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.) The damaging potential of this paralysis began to be realized this week when fractious rebels from the southern Niger Delta first re-united, then on Saturday ended their four-month ceasefire and promised an "all out onslaught" on foreign oil companies in which "nothing will be spared." A second giant worry is that the political impasse will exacerbate tension between northern, mostly Muslim Nigerians — who dominate the army and government and from whose ranks Yar'Adua hails — and southern Christians, whose most senior leader is the vice president, Goodluck Jonathan. As always, the split is the key issue in Nigerian politics, as northern politicians line up behind Yar'Adua and southerners call for his replacement with Jonathan. And while the riots and killings in the northern city of Jos — at least 200 people died after a group of Muslims attacked Christians leaving church on Jan. 17 — are not thought to be directly connected to the political crisis, they underline how explosive the religious divide can be. The only solution is for Yar'adua to be impeached it is obvious that Turai and Yar'adua will not send in a letter to the National Assembly I see this happening b4 the middle of March ![]() |
mikeansy:You mean to be more corrupt and destroy anyone doing good |
I believe anyone elected to an office and his immediate family must make use of public amenities such public schools, public hospitals etc How to get such a law passed is the problem, we need to make these offices unattractive to people that are not ready to make a CHANGE and also force them to make public amenities work effectively |
Are you aware that there is a high chance the Northern Vice President they give Jonathan will most likely be the PDP candidate for 2011 ![]() |
Jaylon:True its really not about the North but about our so called leaders that will sell their souls to the highest bidder we need leaders that put the Country first How to get rid of the ones we have and the ones that will put the masses first we need ideas ![]() |
Slaughter 50 prominent politicians in a day and others will take off while we reorganize this country.
thats not feasible you want to be jailed? |
safeact:ok lets come up with feasible suggestions on how to stop this madness, like you said we dont want the masses suffering but these Senators or lawmakers need the heat to be tuned up b4 they act |
uwani:lol Uwani Atiku no give me anything but we need to understand that the cabal that rules Nigeria as far as they are not destroyed the type of people they put up for President dont make sense look at the choices we have i will go with Atiku for 2011 than any of those other morons |
who are your choices Aliyu Gusau, Adamu Aliero, Sule Lamido, Murtala Nyako or Jubril Aminu ?Sorry dude but i will pick Atiku over all these guys |
uwani:u avnt realised that we dont have much choices and these politicians will not allow a reasonable person there well Atiku is still better than the other choices they have been bringing |
blacksta:pls tell me a Northerner that you think is better, Aliya Gusau? or is it Sule Lamido |
? I want to know,
