Politics › Gunmen Kill Former Aide To Nuhu Ribadu by rebranded(op): 8:11pm On Feb 22, 2010
A former senior investigator with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Danjuma Mohammed was yesterday shot dead in the Gwarimpa area of Abuja. He was ambushed by gunmen as he returned home from a trip from Minna, Niger State.

Mr Mohammed, a DeputySuperintendent of Police and top aide of the former EFCC boss, Nuhu Ribadu, was responsible for several high profile cases during Mr Ribadu’s leadership of the EFCC leading to landmark conviction of some corrupt government officials. He was until his assassination yesterday a deputy investigator at the Federal Inland Revenue Service. Mr. Mohammed was one of the first casualties of the power play in the EFCC when Farida Waziri took over the three years ago.

His assassination is the second against financial crimes investigators. In November 2009, Abubakar Umar, a lawyer and special assistant to Ahmeed Al-Mustapha, registrar of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), was killed and burned in his car in Abuja.

Police investigations are yet to yield any result.

Politics › Re: Fg Woos Ribadu, El-rufa’i by rebranded(m): 4:33pm On Feb 20, 2010

Fellows, thank you for exposing me to the functions of a special duties minister even though it appears Aondoaka was only left threre just be called a minister. i see this as a demotion. A highly placed and the only constitutionally recognised minister now made one without a defined function. Does this men that Jonathan is punishing him for all the utterances he made and for being on yaradua's side and not Jonathans? Aondoaka never supported Jonathan being acting president, at least from his utterances. Does this also mean that Jonathan really wanted to be acting president and saw Aondoaka as an obstacle? please somebody help, this is all confusing!
@Hillstate, where have you been? did you leave planet Earth and return huh

Aondoakaa has been interpreting the constitution to favor corrupt guys in government, he has shielded the most corrupt of corrupt people in Nigeria. Along with claiming there is no vacuum in the Presidency when everyone knows government cant run without a President. Amongst other things he brought shame to the law profession since the first day he was made AGF

hope that helps

Politics › Human Right Watch Urges Jonathan To Sack Maurice Iwu by rebranded(op): 8:48pm On Feb 12, 2010
An international human rights group, Human Rights Watch, has called on Nigeria’s Acting President, Goodluck Jonathan, to dismiss the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Maurice Iwu, in order to enhance the much needed electoral reform.

HRW, in a letter to Mr. Jonathan asked for the dismissal of Mr. Iwu and a comprehensive and impartial investigation into widespread election abuses committed during and since the 2007 elections.

The body urged the Acting President to take immediate and concrete steps to address large-scale violence, endemic corruption, a lack of accountability for abuses, and other pressing human rights problems in the country.

They called on Mr. Jonathan to address the problem of impunity, by ensuring that the police conduct a prompt and thorough criminal investigation, with prosecutions, into the outbreak of sectarian violence in Jos and massacre of at least 150 people in Kuru Karama, earlier in January.

It also called for a criminal investigation into the extrajudicial killings by the police of suspected Boko Haram members in July 2009 and the unlawful killings of more than 130 people by the police and military while responding to the November 2008 sectarian clashes in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

Politics › Day 2: Nigeria's Acting Leader Woos Oil Companies by rebranded(op): 10:04pm On Feb 11, 2010
Nigeria's new acting president, Goodluck Jonathan, is attempting to breathe life into the nation's ailing energy sector just two days after assuming the duties of President Umaru Yar'Adua, who has been out of the country since November with health problems.

Mr. Jonathan summoned several executives from foreign oil companies on Thursday to meet with top Nigerian officials. A focal point of the talks: militants who have sabotaged pipelines, disrupting production and oil prices.

Mr. Jonathan is Nigeria's first president from an ethnic minority or the Niger Delta—an area the size of England that is rich in oil but long plagued by poverty and violence against the energy industry. That ethnic background could help him work with militants in consolidating the peace process, say officials and analysts.

"There's concern that the militants are getting irritated and worried," said Emmanuel Egbogah, the president's oil adviser.

Under the peace program that began last summer, the Nigerian government has essentially paid militants to lay down their arms. However, the delta's main militant group recently called off its cease fire because of its unhappiness over how little money the government is putting into the region.

Wale Tinubu, chief executive of Oando PLC, Nigeria's biggest nonstate energy company by revenue and oil production, said he thinks Mr. Jonathan's ascent to power could spur the reconciliation process between the government and militants.

"Jonathan will make a renewed push towards peace in the Delta and I do believe that will reassure investors in the oil industry," said Mr. Tinubu who wasn't at Thursday's government meeting. Executives from Chevron Corp., ExxonMobil Corp. and Royal Dutch Shell PLC, among other companies, attended the meeting with government officials, according to Mr. Egbogah, the government oil adviser.
